Spoilers for previously aired episodes of The Walking Dead follow, along with comic spoilers
On the December 10th midseason finale of The Walking Dead, Carl Grimes, the son of leader Rick Grimes and the heir apparent to leadership of the Alexandria group in the comics, revealed that he had sustained a zombie bite to his torso. While previous characters have survived bites through amputating limbs, there’s no treatment for Carl’s injury and it’s thought that he’s a goner. Indeed Chandler Riggs, the actor who plays Carl, has confirmed that his character is going to die as has showrunner Scott Gimple. Carl’s fate is much different than in the comics, his character is still alive there, and this seems to have been a unilateral decision by Gimple. Riggs has stated that he was surprised by his character’s fate, and the actor’s father wrote a scathing Facebook post about Gimple, claiming Gimple had just told his son that he would be on the show for the next three years.
In case you needed another piece of evidence that Carl has been written off the show, Riggs, 18, has had his character’s trademark mullet cut off. He now has a cute short cut. A salon in Woodstock, GA, Salon Gloss and Spa, cut Riggs’s hair and posted before and after photos to their Instagram. He looks so different and handsome!
The salon posted a bunch more photos too and Riggs was game to pose for them.
Now he looks like a much more versatile actor. Riggs was one of the names on the short list to play young Hans Solo in a Star Wars prequel and while I doubt he’ll get that particular role I hope there are more coming around the bend for him. However he is going to college after taking a gap year so hopefully he will make education a priority. One bright spot in this firing is that Riggs has his whole life and career ahead of him and more of a chance to avoid being typecast as “that kid from Walking Dead.” He shed that look so easily and is not as recognizable with short hair. It seems like Riggs is having a hard time getting used to his new hair too. He joked on Twitter that it makes him feel exposed.

While Riggs may be making changes and moving on, fans aren’t ready to let Carl go. There’s a petition with over 50,000 signatures calling for showrunner Gimple to be fired in light of his decision to kill Carl Grimes, a character who is pivotal to the story in the comics.

I stopped watching this show several years ago but mr. Crowhood and I were forever annoyed by Carl. In fact, If one of us is doing something annoying the other now says “ok, Carl”.
Yes, Carl is the most annoying character ever (after Laurie). Who are these people protesting haha
He stopped being annoying after the first few seasons.
He grew out of that angsty childhood stage over a season ago. He was super annoying early on, but had the chance to evolve. Unlike, imo, Lori. She was unlikable and died before that changed.
I get they need to keep the show changing from the comics. I can’t hate this decision.

He looks good! I gave up on this show years ago and every time I read something about it – I’m glad of it.
I haven’t watched the show in years, since Andrea died maybe, but this still sucks for Carl fans! I’m hoping his character became more appealing and less idiotic over the years😄 That’s terrible if they told him he was on for 3 more years then changed their minds, wondering if something happened.

Carl has gotten better- he did start off annoying! I can’t believe I still watch this show (sometimes). It’s so terrible. I didn’t watch the episode where Carl was bitten but that just seems nuts- he’s become so important in the show.

He’s adorable!! I went into the ugly cry when he showed he was bit. I would love for there to be a way for carl to survive. Like maybe it’s not a zombie bite?? I really hope chandlers career takes off in a new and wonderful direction.
Why do I have the sudden urge to get my hair cut?! He’s looks adorbs. Carl is probably dead, but the theorists are keeping him alive. If in actuality he is gone, there is no, or very little connection to the comic book left, as Carl plays a huge part in the storyline. Whichever way it goes, I’m in for the long haul…………..unless Daryl, who btw isn’t even in the cb, goes, I might consider missing an episode or two, no, not really.

Carl was a terrible character and I thought Riggs acting was pretty weak at first. Then again the acting in general in TWD is usually nothing special which is why the cast generally doesn’t get awards attention.
The show has gotten so terrible I stopped watching. Carl has always been an annoying character, I’m stunned people care.
Still love me some Daryl though, lol.
This show runner is killing TWD. Ratings have sunk to low after low every time Newgan shows up. Neegan killed TWD. Jeffrey is such a bad actor. He overacts and is like a bad comic villain.
Scott Gimple the showrunenr is what ruined the show. He is an idiot for killing off Carl & turning the Negan stories into several seasons. Ratings will continue to sink. They need to end the show.
I’ve been wanting to take scissors to this kid’s hair for years! But, I’m bummed Carl had to be killed off to get a haircut. He was important to the show.
Part of me is sad because the haircut does reaffirm that Carl really is gone now (wipes tear) and the other part of me is like HE. DID. THAT. He looks so handsome! Not that he wasn’t before the haircut but, you know, now we can see his pretty face 🙂 he’s so funny, too!!
Kid looks much better. Not much of a Coral fan but I do think they made a mistake killing him off. If my tv boyfriend Andrew Lincoln gets bit or killed, I’m out.
Um, considering that the Han Solo movie has already been made, it is indeed pretty doubtful he’ll get that role.
