Lupita Nyong’o wore an amazing Balmain to the National Board of Review Awards

The National Board of Review Awards Gala

Here are some of the fashion photos from the National Board of Review Awards, held last night in New York. This event used to be so low-key – there used to be no red carpet, and people would pose for photos briefly as they headed into a restaurant. People would show up in simple trousers and coats, because it’s January in New York. But like everything else, the NBR Awards have gotten more glamorous. So glam, in fact, that everyone is YAS QUEEN-ing Lupita Nyong’o today. Lupita came out to the NBRs in this Balmain ensemble, which is killer.

I don’t know why there are so few photos of Saoirse Ronan at this event, because she looked awesome and I want to see this jumpsuit from different angles. Ronan wore Emilia Wickstead and this is fantastic. She was there to support her director, Greta Gerwig – Saoirse wasn’t actually named the Best Actress.

Gal Gadot in Elie Saab Spring 2018. It’s pretty, but I find the color to be… not the best. It’s just a few shades “off” for me.

What’s up, Jordan Peele and Daniel Kaluuya? Jordan won an award for debut director, and the Get Out cast won Best Ensemble.

Allison Williams in Cushnie Et Ochs. You guys, this is a JUMPSUIT and it is fabulous. I usually don’t like what Allison wears but this is fantastic.

Laurie Metcalf in Christian Siriano. She’s adorable. I love that Metcalf is really campaigning too – Allison Janney doesn’t have Best Supporting Actress locked up, by any means, and if Allison loses, it will be because Laurie Metcalf has a lot of support.

I can’t even make out what Meryl Streep is wearing. A sparkly coat, a shiny tunic, slacks and boots? It’s all sort of a jumble. But it’s fine – not everyone has to wear cocktail-formal. She won Best Actress at the NBR Awards, but I don’t think she’s a big contender for the Oscars, honestly.

    Wow Lupita,!
I was a little dissapointed with some of her fashion choices lately but this one is amazing with capital letters. the best black outfit ever, she should have save it for the Oscars!

    • Char says:

Totally agree! This is amazing on Lupita, best Balmain out there in a long time! And she has the style, the face/body and everything else to work it!

  2. V4Real says:

These are not bad looks. I love Lupita’s outfit.

  3. Lucy says:

I love how everyone looks here.

  4. minx says:

Was Allison Williams always that skinny? For a minute I thought it was Keira Knightley.

    • Morning Coffee says:

I thought the same thing. Her head is suddenly way too big for her body.

    • ichsi says:

Yes, girl was always on the VERY skinny side. She and Andrea Riseborough I find distractingly skinny. I love them both as actresses, super talented ladies, but I every time I see them on screen I keep noticing their bones sticking out and it makes me sad.

  5. anika says:

They all look great. Lupita Nyong’o looks so pretty – love her look without the colorful eyeshadow she often wear.

  6. Lizzie says:

Emilia Wickstead is one of my least favorite designers and Saoirse Ronan is STILL working the hell out of it. I think she is like Kristen Stewart in that she has a great lithe but not skeletal body to make these looks really work and a great face that can take a lot of makeup that complete the styling needed for more futuristic fashion.

Lupita nyong’o is perfection – end stop.

    • Hazel says:

Duchess Kate wears Emilia Wickstead a lot—it would be interesting to see her in something like this. High-waisted, of course.😉

  7. WakaDoo says:

    Lupita is beautiful, just wow!

  8. PiMo says:

I do not like what Lupita is wearing and I usually like her fashion choices. Gal Gadot looks good. I want Allison Williams’ jumpsuit!

  9. monette says:

This is the first time I see a celebrity wearing something that I wished I had in my closet.
    Lupita’s outfit is amazeballs.
    I love the jumpsuit also.

  10. Kiki says:

    Lupita N’yongo SLAYED…. That’s my girl.

  11. Mar says:

Lupita looks super hot and Gal is a breath of fresh air. She’s so naturally gorgeous and effortless. I don’t usually like her fashion choices but I can live with this. Allison is looking very slim, it makes her jaw much stronger…

  12. Wen says:

Everyone looks amazing. Lupita is stunning! Love her dress, and her face is gorgeous.

  13. K says:

Lupita continues to be the ultimate in red carpet looks! I just love seeing what she wears, she is so stunning. I loved all the looks except Gadot.

I hate to do this but I’m a bit concerned with how thin Allison looks.

  14. Savasana Lotus says:

She is always one of the most beautiful women in the room, and I really love the fabric effect, but I am not a fan of Balmain at all. Too closely related to Kardashians and the look Kim has worn to DEATH. Sorry.

  15. MellyMel says:

I really like what everyone is wearing and I want Saoirse’s jumpsuit in my closet asap! It’s so pretty and cool!

  16. Lucy2 says:

I really like all of these looks. I don’t know that I would call Lupita’s dress gorgeous, but I like it, and SHE is gorgeous. She really elevates the whole thing.
I love Gal’s, the style and the color.

  17. Lulu says:

I love lupitas look. She’s really been knocking it out of the park lately fashion wise. I loved her look at the last Jedi premiere as well.

I don’t like gals look. It’s very 2000 to me. The cut of the dress, the color, her hair and makeup all scream early 2000s

  18. tracking says:

Lupita, Gal Gadot, Allison Williams look gorgeous, though the latter has gotten a bit too thin imo. Ronan also looks fantastic, but the too-long pants are distracting.

  19. What's Inside says:

Lupita looks like a million bucks. Girl has got style.

  20. Lori says:

Love Lupitas look, but hate the white buttons on her shoulder. I’d remove the buttons and wear that all year if I had that figure.

  21. Pppx says:

Allison needs to take some magnesium and hit up a massage therapist. Her shoulder/neck muscles look so tight it’s making ME anxious.

  22. themumy says:

I guess I’m in the minority, but I dislike the two-piece-ness of Lupita’s outfit. That said, her skin is the MOST gorgeous color and the color of that dress looks amazing against her skin.

    • themumy says:

Although now that I am looking at the color again, it looks black. At first it looked like midnight blue to me. Hmm.

  23. Jayna says:

    Lupita looks ah-mazing.

  24. Nikki says:

Grouchy minority opinion here: I really dislike Lupita’s outfit; I think the shoulder pads, high neck, and buttons on one side make it look like something bad from the 1980’s, a Michael Jackson cast-off. I love Laurie Metcalf, but that dress was so bad, as I was scrolling down, I honestly thought the top half was a picture of her in SCRUBS. Really. Meryl Streep doesn’t even have to try? What a waste to have all Meryl Streep’s visibility and money and yet she doesn’t even try to have a glam outfit; she really should up her fashion game. Just such a frumpy layering there. I loved Allison Williams’ jumpsuit though: stunning!!!

  25. Suki says:

Minority opinion too but not a fan of Lupita’s outfit. It washes her out and she doesn’t ‘pop’ in it. IMO, she suits vibrant colours that contrast with her skin. She almost glows in colours like that. This dress is just too fussy and morbid. Gal’s dress colour is pretty but she doesn’t really jump out as anything special. Totally basic.
