Robert De Niro: ‘the jerkoff-in-chief I call him – has put the press under siege’ (update: video)

Robert De Niro has not minced words when it comes to his thoughts on Bigly Buttons. In August, 2016, well before many of us realized that Trump had a chance to win the election, De Niro laid out the facts. He said, in part, that what Trump “has been saying is totally crazy, ridiculous, stuff… he is totally nuts” During the election De Niro supported Hillary Clinton. He recorded a video for a get out the vote campaign in which he just eviscerated Trump. He called him “stupid,” “a con,” a “bullshit artist who doesn’t know what he’s talking about,” “an idiot,” and more. He also said he’d like to punch Trump in the face. I mean he went off a little, but he wasn’t wrong.

Then, after the election, De Niro said he felt after Trump’s victory like he felt after 9/11, as if the whole world was different I guess. I can definitely relate. De Niro has given more interviews with his candid thoughts on Trump but you get the point.

So he’s still got the same opinion, (most people I know took a little longer to get there than De Niro), and he’ll tell us about it. In a speech at the National Board of Review Awards last night introducing Meryl Streep for her performance in The Post, De Niro went off on Trump again. De Niro also came up with some new nicknames for 45, which I really appreciated. Here’s part of De Niro’s speech. (Incidentally this is from a transcript posted on Twitter by a journalist for The NY Times, which The Daily Mail transcribed.)

It was fascinating to watch The Post.

That story took place nearly 50 years ago, but there are many parallels with today obviously.

At the time of the story Donald Trump was suffering with “bone spurs”. Today the world is suffering from the real Donald Trump. Come on. You know. What are we talking about?

This f***ing idiot is the President. It’s The Emperor’s New Clothes – the guy is a f***ing fool.

The publication of the Pentagon Papers was a proud moment for American journalism. The Times and the Post challenged the government over critical First Amendment issues. And the press prevailed.

Our government today, with the propping [up] of our baby-in-chief – the jerkoff-in-chief I call him – has put the press under siege, trying to discredit it through outrageous attacks and lies.’

And again just like 1971 the press is distinguishing itself with brave, exacting journalism.

The movie gave us glimpses of President Nixon as delusional, narcissistic, petty, vindictive, nasty and bats*** f***ing crazy. Ah the good old days…

The good news is that I think we’re at a watershed moment and it’s about time. There are many to thank for that, but tonight is for Meryl Streep.

He’s not wrong at all. I don’t need to recount for you all the awful things that Bigly/Jerkoff-in-chief has done, but praising violent white terrorists, murderers and nazis while demanding that peacefully protesting athletes stand for the National Anthem or get fired is near the top of the list. It’s hard to weigh what’s worse when the jackoff is concerned – getting us all killed by threatening nuclear war to compensate for his inadequacy or targeting certain groups of people to be demeaned and killed first? It’s all terrible. De Niro is just telling it like it is. His nicknames for Trump are decent too. Kaiser has come up with so many good ones, and it’s nice to see that kind of creativity from De Niro too. Those Hollywood folks are some very fine people. So are the press.

Yeah, I have no problem with this. There’s no way Trump gets to insult people day in and day out and then his supporters get to cry “You should not disrespect the president/presidency.” NOPE. NOPE. NOPE. If you didn’t respect the office of the presidency enough to know/care that he was unfit, then you’ve got no room to complain.

Yup it works both ways. Now we have that troll, Joe Arpaio vowing to have a Congressional investigation over Obama’s birth certificate if he is elected to Congress. Seriously that’s what you want to do?

These people should be shamed for all their natural lives.

  2. SandyC says:

I love his honesty, and he’s absolutely right about Trump!

It must be the Italian blood in him… as I would punch Trump in the face too (though I would need a ladder because I am short). I am not very politically correct, am I? 😇

I like the new labels too, great De Niro is not mincing words.

And the whole setup would be delicious. Walking onto the stage. Exiting left behind a curtain to locate the open ladder used by the lighting crew. Slowly but deliberately dragging the wooden artifact across the stage, its motion creating a deafening, screeching echo emanating throughout the hushed auditorium (think Tyrion Lannister). A bit of clumsy positioning in front of the cretin. Retrieve the tightly-rolled printed program schedule from your pocket and methodically ascend the ladder with purpose. Your swift and forceful facial swat sends satisfying soundwaves throughout the theater at which point the crowd erupts with raucous ovation. You descend and take a bow and all is well.

        @Mabs

HAHAHAHAHAHA OMG now my tea is all over the place! Thanks for the much-needed laughs!

This is so inspiring as a journalist – at least the people who don’t wear shirts about hanging us seem to appreciate us! We’ve never been so “under siege” but we’ve also never been more recognized for the work many of us do. So many of us believe in this profession so strongly, it’s been really hard to watch someone bash it every day, and cultivate hatrid of us in others. How do you stay neutral about someone who sh*ts on your profession and its professionals every day? You do your best. But man it’s hard to separate the job from how you feel when someone is going out of their way to hate you and brag about it. I’ve been so impressed with these White House correspondents who do it every day.

Bigly baby hands is funny to me. He’s so much a big baby.

It’s more than the press Bigly McBigburgers is attacking. It’s the very notion of truth itself, which is even worse. Example: There’s a recent fake tweet from Nancy Pelosi going around. Obviously fake. It says created @ tweeterino. This fake tweet has Pelosi saying that Trump shouldn’t let people keep more of their money. It’s an over the top parody of what the right thinks the left believes.

This fake tweet has shown up twice on my FB feed. First time, I said, “fake” and posted a link to snopes explaining why. Response? “snopes is liberal and biased and not to be trusted”. I calmly explained that yweeterino isn’t liberal bias. Friend deleted the post, with no response.

Yesterday, stupid Judge Jeanine Pirro posted it, and another FB friend shared. I explained the fakeness. No response yet.

Then, I went on the Jeanine Pirro post and explained the fakery. Response? “it doesn’t matter Pelosi’s still stupid anyway” I deleted my comment in frustration. There were so many just going off about this tweet, not caring if it’s real or not. There were a few explaining the hoax, but one comment was “check out all the libtards jumping at fake news and fact checking”. WTF????

These people literally don’t care about facts. It’s truly deplorable. And way worse than any anti-press sentiments. This post truth disregard for facts is what will realm kill democracy.

ETA: Just discovered it wasn’t J. Pirro, but a fan site that posted the fake Pelosi tweet. Correcting that because I believe in facts.

I would love to see him Jimmy Conway roundhouse kick him. Cue Atlantis!

The Post is a good film and its message is timely. It closes with a line from Justice Hugo Black’s concurring opinion in NY Times v the United States that the press exists to serve the governed, not the governor. The Times decision itself is just a short paragraph issuing the Court’s order but Black’s concurring opinion is full of gems about the importance of the First Amendment freedom of the press. When the orange lunatic goes off on his anti-press rants, I’ve taken to tweeting quotes from Black’s concurring opinion back at him, embellished by nicknames similar to those used by DeNiro.

  9. nicole says:

DeNiro is a famous Newyorker, he would know exactly what Trump is like, good for him to not mince his words and say it like it is.
