Snowboarder Chloe Kim wins the gold medal & all she can think about is food

The Winter Olympics are usually not my favorite sporting event, but lord help me, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of the PyongChang Olympics thus far. I joined millions of Americans last night watching Korean-American snowboarder Chloe Kim win a gold medal in the snowboarding-halfpipe event. She had already secured her gold medal before her third and final run, but she just went ahead and did the third run anyway and ended up besting her own gold-medal score just for the hell of it. Chloe Kim is 17 years old, fearless and badass. She’s also pretty food-obsessed, which is super-relatable. She’s just a kid! Of course she’s thinking about food. Here are some of her Olympic tweets:

That “hangry” tweet came just as she was about to step out and win gold. Her thoughts weren’t on the competition or doing well or medaling, she was thinking about the breakfast sandwich she should have finished that morning. Bless her.

Why do we find it so relatable when women obsess about food? It’s like a Jennifer Lawrence thing, isn’t it? We enjoy it when beautiful, talented people obsess over food. Chloe Kim is the J-Law of the Half-Pipe.

  2. Léna says:

I justed watched her final run, and wow, amazing! She gave everything for that last run even if she knew she had already won the gold medal, and scored higher!

  3. TheOtherOne says:

Obsessing over food makes her relatable especially since Hollywood is a culture where people are paid not to eat or to promote endless diets.

PREACH. I don’t find it endearing. It’s symptomatic of a culture where people have a totally messed up relationship with food.

Chloe get those ad deals, in the US and Korea! Werk!

She’s really in a league of her own – wow! Kickass! So excited to see Shaun White this evening too! What a comeback story..

  10. Mia4s says:

She’s fantastic! And so relatable. Back when I did competitive sports (nothing near this level!) the end of a competition was about food! Maybe I won a medal, maybe I didn’t; all I cared about was that I could now eat whatever I wanted!! I hear you Chloe!

My girlspawn really admires Chloe. They are similar in age and Siobhan loves snowboarding.

  12. Nancy says:

She is amazing. What an athlete. The food tweets were cute, she will have tons of endorsements because of them. Chloe Kim….eeks, so glad name is spelled with a C and not a K. I’m Kardashianed out this morning. @Redgrl: I’m right there with you….can’t wait to see Shaun. To come back after September is amazing. He’s all grown up now!

  13. JA says:

Please don’t compare a hard working Olympian to Jennifer “I pee in bushes and fart to appear more relatable “ Lawrence. Though JLaw is in every movie nowadays doesn’t mean she ought to be. Congrats Chloe!!!

    • Jenny says:

Couldn’t you just be happy for Chloe without criticizing Jennifer?

    • Cleo says:

Chloe’s a real champion. No comparison.

      • Jenny says:

Oh you’re absolutely right Silly me, here I was just thinking for myself. Thank goodness you commented – I wouldn’t know how to form my own opinions without yours, since you are the authority on all things!

  14. hannah says:

Why not just call her an American?

    • trh says:

because the Korean-American community in Torrance is proud of her, and it’s not inaccurate to report it
