Sarah Jessica Parker & Matthew Broderick fight over nannies

I don’t have a lot of faith in many of the British tabloid weeklies, mainly because they seem even worse than the American celebrity weeklies. There are a couple British gossip sites that I read regularly because they often get good scoops on some of the British celebrities, or visiting American celebrities. But too often the sources are one of the dreaded British weeklies, and I’ve learned to totally avoid the celebrity reports that originate in Look Magazine. That being said, I just couldn’t avoid this story, because I think it might be real. Not that Look (story via Showbiz Spy) actually got a good scoop – I think Look just made a really good guess, in this case.

They’re reporting that Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick are fighting all the time because SJP wants to hire a full-time nanny to look after the twins they are expecting via surrogacy. This is because SJP will have to go to work on the Sex and the City sequel like two minutes after the babies are born. A stressful film shoot – plus SJP’s likely a producer as well – means 18-hour-plus days, and no time to spend with those new babies SJP was so desperate for:

Sarah Jessica Parker has come to blows with her husband Matthew Broderick — because she wants to hire a nanny to care for their unborn twins, and he’s against the idea.

The couple — who are expecting the babies through a surrogate mother — allegedly had a heated argument because Sarah will begin working on the Sex and the City movie sequel soon after the children are born.

“They had a big row earlier this month when Sarah was trying to arrange nannies to help with the twins in the autumn when she starts filming,” a source told Britain’s Look magazine.

“I think Matthew was anxious about the babies being looked after by someone else. She hates the idea too but — not surprisingly — it looks like there’s just no way she can work 18-hour days on set and look after the children.

“Sarah is panicking a bit, wondering whether her and Matthew both being in their 40s means they’re too old to cope with the heavy workload newborns bring.

“She might be scared the night feeds, early mornings and lack of sleep could really divide a wedge between them.”

Sarah and Matthew — who have been married for 12 years — already have a a six-year-old son, James, together.

No judgment to all of the working mothers out there – motherhood on its own is the hardest gig. But I can’t imagine spending 18 hours a day on the set with two newborns being looked after by a nanny. I suspect this story is at least partially true because the babies are due right when SJP begins filming on the SATC sequel. So who will take care of the babies? Why was there such awful scheduling? SJP has known the surrogate’s due date for months, and as producer and star of SATC, she has a major say in the film schedule. Once again, no judgment, but if you’re going to go through all of the surrogacy drama, don’t you want to spend time with those babies? I’m really asking.

In other SJP-is-kind-of-flaky news, Page Six has a story about how she was pulled over by cops in the Hamptons recently. Thank goodness it wasn’t for drunk driving or anything – she was driving at night without her headlights turned on. And her son was in the car. According to Page Six’s source (which sounds like the cop who pulled her over), SJP “told him it was a brand-new car and she didn’t know how to turn them on. They showed her how and let her go with a warning.” I sometimes forget to turn on my headlights when I’m driving in a well-lit area – but my car has sensors that turn the headlights on automatically if they read any kind of darkness. I tend to think that if it’s a new car, and your kid is with you, you should just pull over to side of road and figure out how to turn on the damn headlights.

Please. These two can hire all the help money can buy.

I’m sorry to comment on a petty and superficial topic, but for someone who is known to love fashion, Sarah Jessica Parker certainly seems to make some unusual fashion choices for her son. Maybe it’s different in NYC, but in my opinion James always looks so messy and unstylish. He wears “flood” pants that appear too small in almost every photo I see of him, his clothes frequently clash from a color perspective, and his long, messy, hair looks like it is contantly falling in his eyes. What look/style is she going for with him? The orphan look? The Salvation Army look? The future nerd look? Poor little boy–kids in my area would laugh at some of his unfortunate outfits…I hope he has a lot of self-confidence because he is going to be teased if he continues to dress like this!

our probably fake just guessing story doesn’t say what BUELLER will be doing that he can’t be with said newborns while she whines on camera and runs in heels

  4. HEB says:

Unless Matthew is able to take a break from whatever he’s doing (what does he do lately) to take care of them during SATC filming…they will def need a nanny-come on!

    @justalark

She has commented in the past that her son wears hand-me-downs. Personally, that says to me, she’s more worried about him being able to be a kid; not making him her newest and most fashionable
    accessory.

  6. Christmas_Babe says:

I like SJP but she has admitted that growing up really poor made her desire money, lots of it. Her priorities are showing that now.

  7. Diana says:

Somehow I was under the impression SJP and MB had a full time nanny for their son.

A full time nanny for the twins would not be surprising.

What did surprise me about the surrogate is that she wasn’t better protected given the media frenzy.

  8. Cinderella says:

I’d love to know what the real story is on this whole twins/surrogate pregnancy thing. I’m thinking it’s not what we’re reading.

  9. Hanh says:

If he doesn’t want a full-time nanny, why doesn’t Matthew just take care of the kids himself?

  10. RobN says:

Didn’t they mean to say they already have a six year old daughter?

  11. barneslr says:

The answer is simple enough. If she is busy working, someone needs to take care of them. If MB doesn’t want a nanny, I guess that leaves the responsibility squarely on his shoulders to stay home and care for them himself. I don’t see anything complicated about it.

  12. stellapurdy says:

If it was Bueller working 18 hour days this wouldn’t have been a story. Stupid double standard.

  13. Jess says:

Re the kid’s fashion choices, I don’t think we should criticize her for that. I have a five-year old son and a 2-year old daughter and they both can have very strong opinions about their clothes. I sometimes cringe at what they choose but they’re happy – and they’re learning to express themselves – so I’m not going to let my ego get in the way (or have a battle with the kids that isn’t really necessary)! Instead, I always worry about the kids who look like perfect little fashion accessories – because I wonder if those are really the clothes the kid wants!

  14. Lolly says:

It’s obvious that she really wanted (wants) a girl by the way she makes the boy dress and his hair. Let’s hope that the twins are girls or this kid’s doomed.

  15. tooey says:

My 11-year old has long, “girly” hair and it’s totally HIS choice, not some misplaced desire on my part for a daughter. Maybe JAMES likes his hair long. Jeez, some people act like kids shouldn’t have any say in how they look. As long as he keeps it clean and combed he can wear it as long as he wants.

  16. Scorpiogal says:

I don’t have a problem with his hair, but the clothes ARE awful. My 4-year-old wears exclusively second hand clothes from garage sales and thrift stores, and she’s always the most stylishly dressed child in any room. Second hand doesn’t have to look like that (especially when you shop in ritzy neighborhoods!) The least she could do is give him pants that fit for heaven’s sake.

  17. Ggirl says:

I am skeptical about the babies arrival time, just before the SATC shoot. It just makes me gag to think how many people (couples or singles) use babies to try to boost their careers or draw attention to some project. Gross! and I thought my parents were bad!!
SJP and Dandy Matthew were limping along anyway, and then they want to bring two babies in the mix before a movie shoot? What did Broderick do during the last SATC movie shoot? Does SJP think that two babies are actually going to make it better? I think the city air is clouding her brain!

  18. sooz says:

My four year old daughter wears what she likes. She has a fabulous sense of style, so she looks great, but it’s clear that she dressed herself.

That’s what I see with this kid. Either SJP is letting him do his own thing, or she’s just afraid of being upstaged!

  19. anastasiabeaverhausen says:

Well, I think it’s silly for either one of them to work immediately after they receive these newborn twins. I mean, they supposedly wanted them so badly they got a surrogate to carry them and then she’s starting a major film shoot immediately after they come home and will hardly see them their first few months and he? Dunno what he’s doing.

They have enough money that they could BOTH be home and enjoying/bonding with the new babies and helping their son adjust. But apparently not. Oh well. Just leave them at the doorstep, the nanny will get them.

  20. b says:

I think second hand clothes rock…but please…James always looks lke he has grown out of his pants. Not a great look!! But I love his hair!

  21. Ned says:

While I totally agree that it’s weird and selfish to plan a birth around a time you are unable to care for the babies (not to mention that she can move the schedule being the star of that film and the producer and the fact that the pregnancy was completely planned…)

I would be very suprised had Matthew made such complaint- since he is obviously completely free to care for them 24/7 and since Sarah would not be able to breastfeed anyways- just as he is unable to, then he can become the primary care giver.

It’s not like what she is doing makes sense to me, but he does’t make sense to me either, if that is indeed an issue he raised.

She is obviously the one bringing the dough, so I would imagine that in such household, if there’s an extra work at home it would fall on the shoulders of the spouse who is unemployed.

  22. Maritza says:

Every time I’ve seen this kid he is dressed like a girl and why doesn’t she get his hair cut?

  23. barneslr says:

Why are so many people worried about the length of the child’s hair? Do you really think something that superficial is important? Please. It’s hair. If the kid likes it long, so what? Who cares? And why do you think it’s even worth mentioning?
