Saoirse Ronan in pink Calvin Klein at the Oscars: fabulous or ill-fitting?

90th Academy Awards (Oscars) - Arrivals

Saoirse Ronan ended up being somewhat controversial at the Oscars. The controversy was mostly about her Calvin Klein gown, which elicited strong opinions in many quarters. Honestly, when I first saw it on the red carpet. I thought it was fine, and almost like the 2018 version of Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous candy-pink Ralph Lauren dress (which, for the record, didn’t fit her properly). Upon closer inspection, Saoirse’s Calvin Klein doesn’t really fit her properly either, so maybe that was the throwback reference? I don’t know. I think it could have been a great look, but it just felt like a few things were “off.” The fit was not great, and she could have used at least one big piece of statement jewelry, I though. Like a massive pair of earrings, or a lovely necklace or something.

I wondered if, at some point, both Saoirse and Greta Gerwig started phoning it in a little bit sartorially when they realized Lady Bird wasn’t going to pick up any big awards. It’s not that they stopped trying, it’s just that they stopped trying to dress to make it on the best-dressed lists. Greta’s style has been kind of wacky and all-over-the-place throughout the awards season, but I was not expecting this marigold/saffron Rodarte. On the plus side, it wasn’t nude/beige. On the plus side, it fit her. On the minus side, I would have liked her to wear something… I don’t know, more notable? This is just sort of blah.

Jordan Peele also wore Calvin Klein, like Saoirse. He looked awesome and I’m just so proud of him. GAH! I may start crying.

    I agree.

Saoirse’s dress does not fit properly in the bust area and Greta’s was ok for a premiere, but was missing more impact for the biggest red carpet of the year.

    • Aoife says:

Yes, though the color of Greta’s gown is gorgeous on her (would have been even better without the cheap looking blue necklace).

      • StumpyCorgi says:

That necklace reminds me of Sansa’s poison hairnet on Game of Thrones. If there were any suspicious deaths last night, you know where to look!

No but really, I loved Greta’s dress. It doesn’t seem quite formal enough, but it might look more elegant when she moves.

I love Saoirse, but that gown was not a good choice imho. The fabric gathered in the back made it look like one of those hotel towels folded into swans, or maybe origami, perhaps a sea anemone? I can’t find the right words, but basically that dress is just wrong.

BUT all that matters to me is if these two ladies were happy with their red carpet ensembles. Both have so much inner beauty, the outer beauty isn’t terribly relevant.

    • Chinoiserie says:

It fits imo, its just made in a odd siluette, it made on purpose to create this look. I think it works even if it’s not a best dress material.

    • KiddV says:

I think it’s Saoirse’s posture that is making her dress look awkward. She doesn’t look confident in it.

  2. VecchiaSignora says:

It’s not fabulous nor ill-fitting, it’s Saoirse and the way she works her fashion. At first it was weird but I grew to like the way she carries her red carpet style.

  3. SK says:

Both Saoirse and Greta looked nice, lovely even. No, not show-stopping, not jaw-dropping, not “hit it out of the park”; but lovely. The colours they chose suited them. I would have loved to pull Saoirse’s dress up a few inches and to give her a great necklace. It’s not my type of dress but it suits her and her personality. I liked Greta’s more – she seemed really happy in it too. The colour was wonderful on her. It wasn’t some huge fashion moment but I thought she looked great. Up close the necklace is a bit cheap-looking somehow but from afar the blue colour goes beautifully with the yellow of her dress.

Jordan looked fab and a big congrats to him!

  4. Other Renee says:

I haven’t liked Greta’s style all season but here I think she knocked it out of the park. Her look is perfection.

    • Pix says:

Agree. She’s been dressing all kinds of crazy this season but I was a huge fan of her dress last night. She pulled it together for the big day!

    • Esmom says:

Agreed. She looked the best she’s ever looked this season, from head to toe. I loved the dress.

    • lannisterforever says:

I loved Greta’s dress too! One of my favorites of the night.

    • Ada says:

Yes! It was fun, flattering, and suited both her personality and event. Loved both Greta’s and Saoirse’s looks tbh, down to the blunt 90s bob and cropped, neo-30s hairstyle. They and their movie are so great in general and I’m happy that they found their sartorial feet in time for the Oscars.

  5. Ally says:

That’s a lot of bow weight for a strapless style to carry, no wonder it looks low in front. I’m always surprised anyone wants to fuss/worry about a strapless outfit at an hours-long event. Lovely color and sculptural shape, though, while still being very youthful and modern.

  6. LilLil says:

I always wondered about actresses like Saoirse or Lupita – why don’t they ever wear a designer from their country to a major event? I mean it would be such a great way to promote them.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I would like Greta’s if it were different color, I’m just not a yellow person. Saoirse’s looks droopy and is too pale, IMO.
    Yay for Jordan!

  8. Lucy says:

I just really liked Greta in general last night. She was clearly nervous when it was her turn to present, but during the rest of the night she seemed so genuinely happy for the winners (especially for Jordan). She seems like a lovely woman and hopefully this will only be her first time as a nominee.

    • another kate says:

I enjoyed watching her too! I also noticed her seemingly genuine happiness for the winners. I liked the dress and color, but not at fan of the necklace.

  9. Esmom says:

I immediately thought of Goop’s pink dress when I saw Saoirse’s. Mostly because of the too-low bodice, I think. I also usually love her makeup but I think a little color or her lips would have helped this look overall.

Jordan is lovely, so happy for him.

  10. barrett says:

I love Greta’s dress. As for pink on Ronan that color does not suit her! I can’t wait for millennial pink to go out of style. It’s even in living room decor. Ugh it reminds me of a young girls room and I feel like a grownup!

  11. Tw says:

I wish Saoirse would have done her roots.

  12. KatieBo says:

I rarely feel like Greta Gerwig nails it sartorially, but I really liked this on her! I don’t think she’s much of a fashion person in general so she doesn’t really carry clothes well. In general she seems really bland.

I was hoping for more from Saoirse!! This was just kind of “meh”.

  13. Carmen says:

I like Gerwig’s dress. I love bright yellow. It was an especially welcome change from all the boring beige and black. I didn’t like her hairstyle at all, though. Too flapper-ish.

  14. Bliss 51 says:

I like Ronan’s dress but not on her. I can picture the late Jacqueline Kennedy (before Onassis) in this.

  15. Other Renee says:

I wonder if Saoirse chose this color as a bid to her character in the film, who falls in love with a pink dress while shopping and arguing with her Mom.

  16. sadie77az says:

I love both these dresses because each perfectly personifies the wearer. Greta is pure sunshine, and Saoirse is pure indie sophistication. Look up her ensembles from the various premieres and festivals, she’s an amazing specimen.

  17. serena says:

I had high hopes for Saoirse’s Oscar look but this is terrible. Not only it doesn’t fit her well, she is slouching, her hair is too severe, that shade of pink washes her out and then the matchy shoes.. hell no, it’s a disaster.

  18. oaklandmom says:

looks materially similar to the pink Ralph Lauren dress that Gwyneth Paltrow wore when she won her Oscar.
