Bernardo Bertolucci: Ridley Scott ‘should be ashamed’ of editing out Kevin Spacey

In December 2016, famous Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci got a lot of attention when a 2013 interview went viral. In the interview – which was published or translated in early December 2016 – Bertolucci admitted to conspiring with Marlon Brando to rape Brando’s costar on-film during filming of Last Tango In Paris. Brando’s costar was Maria Schneider, who was then only 19 years old. She thought she was going to be filming a difficult sex scene. The men “surprised” her by raping her with a stick of butter. We covered the issue here and here.

It felt like that pre-MeToo story was a long time coming, and that it had irrevocably tainted Bertolucci’s legacy as a director, and tainted his filmography. Like, he was already canceled, you know? But now Bertolucci has to remind everyone why they canceled him. This ancient old pervert.

Bernardo Bertolucci criticized fellow filmmaker Ridley Scott’s decision last year to replace Kevin Spacey in All the Money in the World with Christopher Plummer after Spacey was accused of sexual assault by more than a dozen men. During the world premiere of his restored film Last Tango in Paris on Saturday night at the Bari International Film Festival, Bertolucci had harsh words for Scott.

Bertolucci said that when he learned Scott had agreed to erase all of Spacey’s scenes in the film, his first reaction was to message Scott’s frequent editor Pietro Scalia, “to tell Scott that he should be ashamed,” said Bertolucci, who thought Scott was succumbing to pressure.

“And then I immediately wanted to make a film with Spacey,” continued the director, to much applause from the audience.

Bertolucci clarified that he agrees completely with the #MeToo movement and praised it for bringing awareness to violence against women around the world.

Bertolucci has been criticized over the years for revealing that crucial details of Last Tango’s butter rape scene involving Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider were withheld from the young actress until the actual shoot in order to elicit a more outraged reaction from her. The helmer admitted he had been horrible to Schneider at the time but denied feeling any regret over his actions. Schneider admitted years later that she felt “a little raped, both by Marlon and by Bertolucci,” and said that had she known her rights as an actress, she would have called her agent or lawyer at the time.

Bertolucci again discussed Schneider and the infamous scene in Bari. “On the set, she was happy,” he said. “Do not believe on social media when they say it was rape: The butter scene was pure simulation.” The filmmaker added that during the shooting, “Brando was very paternal and protective of her. There was a very good relationship between them.”

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

FFS, before her death, Maria Schneider said repeatedly that she felt raped, that she felt violated, that she didn’t give her consent, and that she was traumatized by what happened to her on that film. And now the only one of her rapists who is still alive is claiming that it was no biggie because she smiled on set a few times. But he supports #MeToo, you guys. He totally supports it, now let him tell you more about the time he conspired with Marlon Brando to rape a teenager.

As for the Kevin Spacey stuff… look, Bertolucci is clearly determined to be the absolute f–king worst. I tend to believe he genuinely believes he’s being a provocateur. He’s not. He comes across as senile. What bothers me is this: “…to much applause from the audience.” Yes, let’s applaud the old man who admitted conspiring to rape a teenager because he said he would love to work with an actor who was, by all accounts, a serial predator of young men and boys. Who were the people clapping at this? I need a list of names.

There are some awful people in this world. UGH!!!

  2. Lucy2 says:

Lucy2: Doesn’t care what nasty old rapist thinks.

  3. Digital Unicorn says:

Bertolucci has always been a disgusting human being, am sure there are many, many MeToo stories about him.

    • Gretchen says:

If I recall correctly, Eva Green has some stories about him (and Michael Pitt) from when they filmed Dreamers.

  4. Aiobhan Targaryen says:

This man is talking out of his ass. He also does not understand what the me too movement is about if he can say he aggrees with it and then tries to defend Kevin Spacey. Who has not denied doing what he is accused of doing.

Does he think that just because Kevin violated males that those males are not victims, too?
It is not clear on what he believes, I am just guessing from his response that he does not believe that those men were hurt.

  5. greenmonster says:

The people clapping for this were people who went willingly to a premiere of a restored film in which a young woman gets raped ON CAMERA.
I just go back to yesterday’s thread about Keanu and look at him. That’s how I keep my peace today.

“a young woman gets raped ON CAMERA”
Wait….is that really what happened? I thought that the outrage was that Brandon and Bertolucci didn’t tell the actress that they were filming a simulated rape scene and using butter as a prop? That IS awful in and of itself. obv if you are filming such an intimate and scary scene, the actors should all be 100% privvy to exactly what is going to happen every step of the way.

But did Brando actually rape her and they filmed it? OMG. That is a whole different level of horror.

      • greenmonster says:

No, I meant using the butter as prop. But still… She didn’t give consent to that. She didn’t know.

      • Pamela says:

Ok, that makes sense. And I completely agree, that it was NOT OK for the men to decide what would happen in the scene and NOT tell HER. Awful.

  6. Tig says:

My concern as well- some people enjoy being s$&t stirers, and clearly he’s one. But who’s applauding? And to what exactly? If they were applauding his pretty hollow statement re his support of #Metoo, then yay, I guess? If applauding his statements re Kevin Stacey, that’s just awful.
I feel even more sorry now for Maria S than I did bef- she really was swimming with some pretty vile sharks during LT.

  7. Kitty says:

Wait! I thought that was a scene in the movie..she wasn’t actually physically raped during filming was she? When I watched that movie years ago, I was uncomfortable during that butter scene, could never understand why people liked that movie.

    • noway says:

I read her account of it, and she wasn’t penetrated, but it’s irrelevant. She did not know how far they were going to go with the scene and they did not ask if she was comfortable about it before it was shot. She didn’t really say what she thought the scene was going to be other than a hard sex scene, but it was definitely more than scripted, and she felt assaulted and abused. They claimed they were looking to show real emotion in the scene, and they needed her surprise reaction. Yes this sucks, and it does seem like a crime to me. Unfortunately she passed away not too long ago, so we can’t get her recent perspective. Also, social media wasn’t really that big of thing when she was talking about this, so not sure what the creepy director is talking about. All her comments were mainly interviews.

  8. HK9 says:

Bartolucci is about 77 right?? Not long now.

  9. indefatigable says:

Speaking of Spacey (and Weinstein) are they going to court soon or what?

  10. Lala says:

I was done with BB after “The Dreamers”…and finding out the horrible things that he did to Maria during Tango…he’s ALWAYS given me the same…skeevy…vibe as Woody…ALWAYS…even as a young girl…and I was exposed to his movies before I was 11….

  11. starkiller says:

Well, I think Bertolucci should be ashamed of showing his face in public, so I guess were even.

  12. PunkyMomma says:

    He’s disgusting.

  13. minx says:

    Ugh, go away.

  14. HollyGo says:

He should be more ashamed of Alien Covenant.

  15. Eleonor says:

I have always refused to watch Last Tango in Paris because the stories about the rape have been around for decades, and Maria Schneider struggles stories were horrible.
Personally I saw one or two film made by him, and I thought he was extremely overrated…and for the applause…I think those are the same who applaud Woody Allen.
That’s all I have to say.

    • holly hobby says:

He made the Last Emperor and that was the most boring film ever. I didn’t think it was all that.

    • The Recluse says:

I think the only movie he did that I like was Little Buddha – with Keanu Reeves. If my memory is correct, that is….

  16. Slowsnow says:

You’ll find his picture next to the definition of “dirty old man”.

  17. paranormalgirl says:

Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. That’s all I can really say. He is amongst the WORST!

  18. K says:

I feel for Maria. She’s still being victimized. He’s retelling her story, and probably to a bigger audience than she ever had when she was alive. She tried for so long to tell her side. I’m happy people finally listened, and I hope someone puts Bertolucci in his place.

  19. Lauren says:

This guy is about the same age as our former prime minister Berlusconi and they are just about two peas from a pod. Most of that generation of Italian men is problematic AF. We are talking about a time where rehabilitating marriage was the norm in Italy and if you were raped or assaulted the woman was the one shamed, as rape was a crime against public morality rather than an offence against the victim. I’m not surprised that this guy finds nothing wrong with his behaviour.

  20. Mina says:

The people who applaud are the ones who’d go to a screening of that awful movie, what else do we need to know?
