Madonna wore Gaultier to the Met Gala: disappointing or just right?

Met Gala 2018 NY

Everybody was primed and excited to see what Madonna was going to do for THIS Met Gala. Madonna has always used Catholic imagery in her fashion and her art. This Met Gala theme was tailor-made for her! So the anticipation was off the charts. And then she came in this gothic Jean Paul Gaultier look and… it was just a disappointment, right? I mean, it’s on-theme and she looks good-for-Madonna. But I was expecting her to do THE MOST. We expected too much from her.

Solange crowdsourced her Met Gala look, and she ended up in this Iris van Herpen. Her inspiration was “the black Madonna.” Solange usually has a lot of fun with the themes and you can tell that she enjoys fashion… more than Beyonce, really. (Beyonce did not attend!)

Princess Beatrice is the first British royal woman to attend the Met Gala since Princess Diana attended in the 1990s. Beatrice didn’t cause much of a commotion though. She wore this vivid purple Alberta Ferretti gown with a small gold headpiece. Chic, simple.

I was disappointed in Madge too! Cardi B did a similar interpretation and I think he’s worked much better. This just looks like glamorous widow weeds. Kudos to her for the netting over her face so you can’t see the jacked up mess she’s worked so hard on…

    • whatWHAT? says:

all I noticed was her face. it looks as if she’s had an allergic reaction and her face is swollen to three times its size.

      • Jordan says:

That’s been her face for the last two years now. Really. Possibly longer but at least two.

    • Lilly says:

LOL. I loved the look, but thought the same about the purpose of the veil on Madonna and keeping her hands covered has been a thing for awhile now. Maybe i just like it because… Jean Paul. I met him once and he’s a sweetheart. He and Kate Moss truly made me laugh in the Ab Fab movie. Solange and Princess Beatrice look great too – in vastly different ways, of course. Solange is so striking.

    • otaku fairy says:

I liked Cardi B’s look better too. Madonna’s is okay though.

  2. Betsy says:

Madonna is dressed like an obscure Italian widow queen from the 19th century.
    I love Solange’s look.
I like Bea’s purple and her little head wrap.

  3. SKF says:

But she sang Like A Prayer with a choir of fake monks all in brown cowled robes!!! So good!!

  4. lightpurple says:

For years, people have been screaming at Madonna to be “age appropriate.” Well, she did. And she looks fine. She’s keeping with the theme and her own personal style history. She’s just not showing skin.

Solange’s was wild. Is that thing inflatable? I loved the whole look.

    • minx says:

      Yeah, I like Madge’s look.

    • Nicole says:

I like it as well. On theme and not garish

      • Pandakeeper says:

I really liked it. Solange was interesting. Not feeling the purple on Beatrice

    • Felicia says:

Madonna never really does what people expect.

    • Tan says:

      Me too
She looks theme ans age appropriate .
I feel she looks like Eleanor of Aquiatine

    • Malificent says:

Works for me too. And any time that her well-preserved ass isn’t hanging out, it’s a win.

    • Dhavynia says:

I’m not hating Solange’s outfit but you mentioned inflatable and all I can see is the outfit Missy Elliot wore in The Rain video…odd

    • Who ARE these people? says:

      Madonna of Aragon

    • mellie says:

You are correct, lightpurple, much better than last years skin show that Madonna put on…

    • Kitten says:

ITA. She looks good. It might not be jaw-dropping but I think it’s time for her to leave that to the younger crowd. Overall, I’d say this is a win for her.

    • Anna says:

Solange is wearing Iris van Herpen, incredible innovator in 3D digitally designed garments, way ahead of the game. Other than the headpiece, though, which is fresh, I’m not seeing how that works within the theme.

  5. Lindy says:

Scary eyes Beatrice looks great. Madonna and her crown of crosses was disappointing, too try hard.

    • Khymera says:

She always looks surprise to me.

    • Anastasia says:

Awww, I’ve always loved her big eyes!

    • Hazel says:

Scary eyes? Those are Queen Victoria’s eyes. And I think she looks lovely. She can’t help her genetics—her teeth are what they are. I still think this is the best she’s ever looked.
And Madonna looked like ‘80s era Madonna, so good for her.
I’m not sure what to think about Solange’s outfit, I just know I enjoy her style & she never disappoints.

      • notasugarhere says:

Yes, the Hanoverian eyes. She looks a lot like Victoria too.

      • LAK says:

And Mountbatten teeth. See also William, Anne, Zara, Andrew and various Mountbatten cousins.

Beatrice’s teeth look disproportionately huge because she has Victoria’s small mouth, jaw and nose.

  6. LittleWing says:

I’m glad madonna was there, because it reminded me of the video for like a prayer. Frankly the gala could have just played that vid on a loop and everyone else could have stayed home. Madonna4life.

    • kittyhawk says:

Madonna was the perfect fit for last night and her performance was super cool.

  7. Jenns says:

    I liked Madonna’s look. I didn’t love it, but it wasn’t awful.

I love Solange’s look. No comment on Beatrice.

  8. harlequin says:

Love her Like A Prayer performance. Totally iconic and on point.

  9. WingKingdom says:

I’m never on the same page with everyone else on fashion, lol. I LOVED Madonna’s look and thought it was perfect, on theme, and absolutely breathtaking. I love that she didn’t do the expected amount of skin-showing. She knocked it out of the park!

    • tracking says:

I agree, I loved it too.

    • kittyhawk says:

The black roses are a nice touch too.

    • Marley31 says:

I grew up watching Madonna on MTV and listening to Madonna when girls would dress like Madonna and have do there hair like Madonna. There has never been another so I love Madonna for me Madonna can do no wrong. I thought her outfit was themed for the event it would have been even better if her daughter came dressed as her being she looks just like her mom when she was younger.

  10. Becks says:

I think Madonna actually looks great. I feel like often she is trying to recreate past famous looks of hers, but this is something new-ish and fun and appropriate for the event.

I like Beatrice – the dress is kind of boring but I guess she couldn’t go all out like others. Why was she there though?

    • notasugarhere says:

Beatrice lives and works in New York City; this event is full of movers and shakers.

  11. Lucy2 says:

I think Madonna’s look is perfect for this event. I feel like she’s worn such similar things in the past that never fit the theme, but finally got the right chance.
I usually like Solange’s interesting choices, but i don’t care for this one.

  12. Lizzie says:

madonna looks great. i’m so incredibly happy she didn’t do some sheer catholic schoolgirl uniform and embarrass herself. you know she pitched the idea…

  13. Merritt says:

Considering the theme, Princess Beatrice really missed the opportunity to dress as Catherine of Aragon or Anne Boleyn.

  14. Maum says:

I thought Madonna was surprisingly non-Catholic. She’s more Goth bride.

Beatrice looks like one of those scary lifelike dolls that people collect.

  15. Jayna says:

No ass or boobs hanging out and pushed up. A win for Madonna. I enjoyed her ensemble.

  16. Anastasia says:

I feel like I’ve seen Madonna in this get up about a million times.

  17. Lala says:

When you’ve spent decades pushing the fashion envelope…inevitably…there’s no where else to go…however, Madonna looked good…and I liked the dress…

Solange was walking art…which is what I’ve always thought the Met was all about…and the fact that she is wearing the same $2.99 Durag on her head that I wear every night to bed…TICKLES ME!!!!

  18. Bridget says:

Madonna wasn’t going to do the expected – especially here. As much as the theme seems tailor made for Madonna, it’s tailor made for Madonna 20 years ago. Was she going to dress up as herself? I can actually see her not wanting to be a retread, as she’s ‘been there, done that’

  19. Neelyo says:

Uh oh, are veils now going to become Madonna’s thing?

  20. lower-case deb says:

is Princess B bringing with her authentic royal tiara?
if so that’s history right there! Anglican tiara of genuine royal extraction worn to a Catholic themed plebeian celebevent!

or maybe am just reading too much into it

    i blame ennui.

    • Merritt says:

I don’t think so, it doesn’t look last me any tiara I’ve seen for the BRF.

  21. Alexandria says:

I give props to Beatrice since she can’t really wear something crazy. Hmmm I expected more from Solange, she usually brings it.

Madonna looks on theme and thank God she is not trying too hard to be sexy. If she actually relaxed and not try too hard, she can look nice.

  22. Carmen says:

Madonna looked pretty good. She’s finally accepting her age.

Beatrice looked great. I love that color on her.

Solange looked like she was wearing an inflated inner tube and a doo-rag with a halo attached.

  23. ChillyWilly says:

I think Madonna looks fab! That crown is really cool. Solange looks like an Alien Madonna to me. Very HR Giger. I like Princess B’s look as well. Pretty shade of purple and love the head band.

  24. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

Best I’ve seen from Madonna in a long time.

  25. lower-case deb says:

i feel that at this point even if she dresses in a sack i’ll still give her a pass. like she helped bring in Catholic goth fashion into pop mainstream..

plus how many homages to Weeping Madonna art do we have this night? but obv not her for she -is-Madonna. her daughter is Lourdes!!

how more Catholic can you get really?

  26. what's inside says:

    Madonna, ugh…..

  27. Kitten says:

Does anyone else wish Solange had skipped the boots? I think it would emphasize the structure of the dress more. Or maybe it’s just me–I want to see what the dress would look like with metallic heels. It’s really cool but with the boots, it’s just too much black shininess for me.

  28. No Doubtful says:

I think that’s the best Madonna has looked in years…

  29. jferber says:

I usually like Madonna’s outfits, but not this one. Solange looks amazing. Yes, Solange really has fun with fashion.

  30. Sara says:

I honestly think Madonna looks beautiful! I guess I am the only one that thinks her face work looks pretty good.

  31. PrincessK says:

    Beatrice looks beautiful!

  32. Anare says:

I find Solange so much more interesting than her sister. This look killed it! Love!
