Selena Gomez ‘clapped back’ at people making fun of her horrid Met Gala look

met Gala 2018 NY set 2

CB covered Selena Gomez’s horrendous look at the Met Gala, so I ended up not paying that much attention to Selena. Now that I’m looking at these photos though… my God!! I don’t really consider Selena to be a fashionista, honestly, so I already have a low bar set for her red carpet looks. But surely she can hire some good people to style her? Because I think the people she’s got around her might not have her best interests at heart. It’s one thing to wear a shapeless, negligee-looking gown because you’ve got a $10 million Coach contract. It’s another thing to style that horrid dress with bad hair and an aggressive fake tan.

Anyway, Selena was obviously on a lot of “Worst Dressed at the Met Gala” lists. She knows. She understands that it wasn’t a good look. So she posted this to Instagram:

Me when I saw my pictures from MET 🤷🏽‍♀️

A post shared by Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) on

Which is cute and fine, but then of course Selena had to underline the point. It’s basically the Taylor Swift School of Self-Referencing And Overexplaining. You can’t just make a self-aware joke on social media – you have to get your people to over-explain it to People Magazine:

After Selena Gomez posted a cryptic Instagram video showing herself running away from her Met Gala photos, many began to speculate she wasn’t happy with her appearance on Monday’s red carpet. But an insider tells PEOPLE that the 25-year-old singer shared the clip as a message to her internet haters.

“In person, she honestly felt great but not everything looks the same as it does in person,” the source says. “She was just clapping back at people who were commenting on her tan and hair and wanted to make a joke about it.”

Twitter was quick to notice Gomez’s enhanced glow and users didn’t hold back from sharing their unfiltered thoughts about her overly bronzed appearance. “Whoever gave selena gomez that spray tan tonight is holding a secret grudge against her,” one user wrote, with another writing, “Why is Selena Gomez looking like Ross when he got a spray tan? #MetGala.”

The insider tells PEOPLE that, Gomez “got it when she saw the photos.”

As for her custom Coach dress, Gomez “loved” the design and how it honored the theme.

“She had two outfits to choose from and decided on Sunday which one she was going to go with,” the source shares. “She loved the dress and was very involved with it.”

[From People]

So now instead of coming across like a person who can laugh at herself, Selena seems hypersensitive and like she can’t actually take a joke. As for this idea that she looked great in person and her look only photographed poorly… I’m including a shot of Selena outside of her hotel, a candid photo in regular lighting, as she was heading to the gala: if anything, her fake tan and makeup looked even worse than it did in the more complimentary light of the gala carpet. I have a hard time believing that Selena looked amazing in person.

Does anyone else cringe when the train off a dress is on the ground? It’s different when it’s on the carpet, but I can’t help but think about how dirty it gets.

Concerning Selena, her outfits to the Met have been consistently bad for years.

    • Neelyo says:

I thought that too, especially getting into that van

    • Mrs. Wellen Melon says:

Yes and also I can’t with the poor fitting at the bust.

      • vesper says:

Same… it is just a terrible fit for her and the spray tan is awful too. She needs a better stylist.

      • Adele Dazeem says:

Yes!! I’m sure at her age (and tbh, childfree status lol) her boobs are real and fantastic but omg that dress made them look really…vintage. 😉

    • RedOnTheHead says:

Yes! And running barefoot and dragging your train in a NY city parking garage?? There isn’t a dry cleaners in the world that could make me wear that dress again.

  2. Marie says:

TBH, my first thought was “Why is Selena doing blackface during the Met Gala?” But yeah, definitely Ross from when he got that fake tan.

    • Annabelle Bronstein says:

      LOL @Ross from Friends

    • Clare says:

This. She is basically the same shade as LuAnn from housewives. I mean, the intention is COMPLETELY different, obviously, but the end result is kind of in the same ball park. Embarassing.

    • still_sarah says:

@ Marie. I totally thought “blackface” when I saw it and thought “isn’t that a racist social faux pas to do that? And at the Met Gala??”

Plus I do NOT see how that unattractive design honours the theme of the Met Gala.

      • Nn says:

Blackface? Are you guys serious….I’m black. This is not blackface, just a bad spray tan.

    • Ronaldinhio says:

My clueless but bitchy friend said…oooo I see Rachel Dozel scored a Met invitation

  3. minx says:

This is a minor point, but I wonder how she thought that mess “honored the theme,”

  4. Ankhel says:

It’s practically speaking blackface, especially with those tight curls. WTH.

    • KLO says:

She has naturally curly hair. XD

      • Ankhel says:

So curly it seems to spring back against her head? Because that’s the effect that particular do gives, courtesy of pins and lots of product. Then there’s the tan, and the makeup. It adds up. I would’ve guessed she was biracial, if I hadn’t seen her before. It’s unfortunate. She couldn’t have realized, I’m sure.

      • Veronica S. says:

In fairness, she is Mexican and Italian in heritage, so it’s likely she does have a medium-tan skin tone that handles sun well. Just not this…mess.

      • Nn says:

Ankhel, you sound like a troll.
I’m black. I have naturally loose curls.
Curls, tight or not, is not exclusively a black thing.
This is not blackface and you know it.

      • Ankhel says:

So, NN, you are attacking me, calling me a troll, for stating that her styling looks like accidental blackface? Which it does? “She couldn’t have realized, I’m sure.” ACCIDENTAL. Bad styling, not bad person.

    • Andreia says:

I disagree. This is just a case of to much bronzer, contouring and highlighter. I know its trendy to highlight and contour, but you really need to use a light hand.

    • JeanGray says:

This is not blackface at all. This is heavy-handed spray-tanning, Ironically, had she gotten an actual tan from the sun, her color would have looked so much more natural, since she is half Mexican after all and her dad has a more Native American coloring. My mom is a very light skinned PR of mainly Mediterranean and Taino Indian descent, but she presents more white than anything. My dad is Central American of Native American and African descent. I look pale AF. Think Emma Stone white in the winter. But when I tan in the summer, I get to an Eva Mendes color, and my foundation changes about 6 shades darker. Spray tanning just turns me orange.

    • Veronica S. says:

Some of the more saturated shots were definitely…offputting, but when I looked at photos of her in natural daylight, it didn’t look at all like blackface to me. Bronzer still wasn’t great, but the lighting and photography definitely wound up having an unfortunate compounded effect with the makeup she had on. I mentioned below that if you look at photos of her getting ready on Instagram, the makeup did not look that dark in natural light. Somebody did not understand the venue lighting they were dealing with when putting her look together.

The daylight shots also make the hair look less tightly curled than it does in the dark. More like what naturally wavy hair looks like when it’s curled more and than worn in an updo – I mean, I’m white as hell, and my hair looks like that if I throw a little curling gel on it and then tie it up. Not defending it, per se, just saying that I think it’s actually a result of a combination of missteps resulting in one cringe-worthy look.

    • Sabrine says:

There’s nothing blackface about her look. How ridiculous to even think that.

  5. Betsy says:

That dress is a crime against her chest. Honestly, that looks saggy and painful, almost like when you first get your nursing boobs but before you get to the specialty store for a nursing bra that fits (what? Am I the only one who ended up in L cups?)

    • Anastasia says:

YES. All I want to do is give her a really supportive bra. Or yank those spaghetti straps back about four inches.

      • minx says:

It’s especially noticeable from the front…the cups are bagging out at the sides. Just an ugly, ill fitting mess.

    • Marigold says:

That’s what I thought, too! Where have I seen that chest? Oh, right-on my body 4 days after giving birth when I feared anything even grazing my nipples.

    • Abby says:

YES! It looked like my poor sad breastfeeding boobs in an unsupportive camisole. She is so young and beautiful to have a dress top look this terrible on her.

  6. MellyMel says:

She didn’t look good period. The dress, the hair, the makeup, the spray tan…none of it worked plain and simple. Just laugh it off and move on.

  7. Kaye says:

Was anyone else uncomfortable with that video clip? Maybe it was done with her permission, but it felt to me like she was being pursued by a stalker.

    • Electric Tuba says:

No. Turn the sound on. She’s running with the person holding the camera hollering about a printer

      • Kaye says:

That explains it then. I’m at work so I never have the sound on.

        Thanks.

      • BackstageBitchy says:

@electic tuba- a SPRINTER, i.e. a Sprinter van, the kind of van that she jumps into.
        Not a printer!
        That would have been funnier.

    • Kitten says:

It was weird. The parking garage, her running away…I know they were just f*cking around but yeah, without sound, it’s creepy.

  8. KLO says:

i think it was the perfect response.

I found her look generally charming, the only thing that irked me was the shiny face and unsupported boobs.

I really don`t get why you would savage someone over having a tan that`s too dark and having bad make-up.

Alicia Vikander`s look looked just as horrid at the Met and noone said a word about her.

    • Lynnie says:

Honestly outside of Celebitchy I’ve never seen Alice’s work or hear any mention of her, besides some rumblings about the tomb raider movie, and that’s only when I’m on game-specific sites not in the mainstream. (Actually I might’ve seen her name in a Conan YouTube vid, but tbh I’m not sure.) I’m sure it’s the same with a lot of people my age and younger.

Selena has a bigger presence with people my age and younger. Those are the same people that savage everyone for looking a mess on Twitter/insta BUT seeing as how everything is like driven/finite window to make your joke and go they’re not gonna waste time on someone they don’t know when there’s an easier more well-known target. The media will do the same thing, but this time it’s in terms of clicks.

    • Josephine says:

My guess is that she thought the dress was very pretty – and it was. It just didn’t look good on someone with her ample assets without better support. And yes, the make-up was not flattering, but I’m guessing that her hair was natural? She seems like a kid to me still, so I cringe at the harsh comments.

    • Roxane says:

What Lynnie said. Plus, Alicia is not on social media, there’s no story to get out of this because there will be no response. But with Gomez being one of the most powerful person on social media and frankly hypersensitive, there you go.

    • Kitten says:

I thought she tried to make fun of herself? I thought it showed humility and that she DOESN’T take herself too seriously (so basically the opposite of Kaiser’s take). I also thought her clarification made sense, too. It happens to the best of us.
I thought I looked like hot sh*t at my BF’s sister’s wedding reception and looking back at photos, my bra was showing at the top of my bodice and honestly, I looked drunk lol.
      (only had a couple drinks).

  9. Bridget says:

It’s a bad dress and a bad look, it happens. But when you get defensive and talk about it, it lasts longer and longer.

    • minx says:

Exactly. Chalk it up and move on.

    • KLO says:

honestly I think noone takes make-up blunders that seriously anymore these days.

Because of all the contouring, bronzing and drawn eyebrows, reflective powder etc, there is always something that could go wrong and people are used to it and not actually as judgmental as they would have been 20 years ago.

  10. Lynnie says:

Lol fashion is the one thing she has to be good at consistently so everyone else can give her a pass on all the other stuff she’s not. If she can’t do that well…

Honestly her makeup is the biggest gripe I have with the whole thing. I can’t believe she passed all those mirrors, and decided she looked fine washed out smh.

  11. Hestia says:

to me she looked like she was already high or drunk when she arrived at the gala…

  12. Electric Tuba says:

    Oh come on

  13. Kiki says:

I don’t be pay any attention to these stupid parties celebrities go to. However, Selena should just take a chill pill and lightened up. So you are the worse dress list l… So What. Why should you care.

  14. Andreia says:

I can relate…I have had a few occasions where i thought i looked great and then i looked at a photo and thought…WTF. My rule of thumb with make up is less is more. I can’t hate on her for this. I honestly do not mind the dress. With better make up and hair it can be very sexy.

  15. TheOtherOne says:

New boobs or is she eating carbs again?

    • Lauren II says:

Selena has gained some weight.. i feel badly for her. Bieber mess and now this travesty.
I refuse to criticize Selena. She has mental health issues, and needs kindness.

  16. HeyThere! says:

The fake tan was horrible. That was the worst part for me.

  17. Sesame says:

Selena seems hypersensitive… bc Selena IS hypersensitive. This girl can blow a gasket about the most innocuous stuff. I remember her IG rant and switch to private profile when a Billboard profile just repeated her words about a teddy bear hangin around in her kitchen…

  18. Nope says:

Selena’s stylist, Kate Young was ranked #1 “Most Powerful Stylist in Hollywood” and if I’m not mistaken this isnt her first time as #1 and she’s been highly ranked for a while now (other clients include : Sienna Miller, Margot Robbie & Natalie Portman)

They’ve worked together for a while now and I think Kate has great style … but I don’t think they’re a great match — I feel like Selena never looks comfortable or fresh .. and Selena is so gorgeous — I wish her looks were a bit fun

  19. Taxi says:

It’s hard to believe she didn’t look in a mirror or her dresser/stylist didn’t help out. Her boobs look like they’re at least 45 years old & have nursed several children.
Aside from way too much highlighter or luminizer, her lipstick was far too pale. A defined mouth with color might have elevated the whole nightgown look.
I don’t get the point of her video tweet. It makes no relevant statement.

  20. cee says:

She looked ridiculous ONE TIME and she can’t deal with it. It’s very sad how some people take themselves and their image so seriously they can’t even laugh.

  21. hey-ya says:

…generally I was amazed at the gorgeous dresses that looked just meh on the met red carpet…prime suspect JLow whose Balmain didnt glitter & sparkle as maybe it should have…mind you JLows make up was perfect as always & probably saved the evening for her…

  22. Molly says:

I do wonder if she was brown-facing with that awful tan. She was supposed to be homaging Esther, a Jewish woman who became queen.

    • CamoTime says:

      She is Latina FFS.

      • cee says:

And not all latinas look like her FFS. Nor are we either brown or black. We come in all colours! Look at Alexis Bledel, she’s 100% latina. Molly made a valid point considering Selena never looked so obviously fake tanned before.

      • Nn says:

Alexis is mostly European though. She has Danish ancestry.
Most so called white Latinos are actually mostly European (spanish) in heritage while most brown ones like selena have mestizo ancestry, indigenous to the land.
        Most Mexicans are mestizo.
White and black Latinos are a minority in mexico.

  23. Pandy says:

She looks overweight and sagging in the breasts. About what I’d look like in that dress but I’m 56 and a G cup! It just wasn’t a good look.

  24. lamaga_hyun says:

I’ve kinda wanted to hang back on the comments because I really think she probably is sick. Lupus is not a joke. Flares result in a bevy of visible symptoms. I just wanted to point this out. Talking about how horrible she looks seems a bit gross to me.

    • samipup says:

      Agree.

    • Eris says:

Yes I agree. Also a common treatment for her illness is steroids which causes changes in the body and a bloated appearance. It seems to me she was trying to contour that away, and she may not feel comfortable dressing her body after the changes. I feel like we should have empathy for her in this situation.

  25. Krissy says:

The crazy bronzer overload makes her look like she’s basically doing brown face, There’s a video of her doing an interview with Lisa Koshy whose half Indian and has a brown skin tone and their almost the same complexion. It’s ridiculous! Her stylists/makeup artists don’t like her.

    • Nn says:

Selena is half mestizo mexican so she is a brown woman.

I have seen her with a natural tan and her skin is really brown, this is just a bad fake tan that makes her look bronze orange.

  26. Veronica S. says:

I can deal with the dress, as much as I don’t like it. It’s the makeup that I find absolutely atrocious. And the thing is I don’t understand WHY it looked so bad because the pre-MET photos she posted on Instagram of her getting ready, it looked perfectly fine. So I don’t know if it’s just poor lighting that her MUA didn’t account for or if the highlight was just wrong for her face, but it gave her a glazed, sickly look – which I imagine is the absolute last thing she wants to emulate at this point.

  27. Cleone says:

Does anyone else want to conspiracy theory with me about her being pregnant with a Bieber baby? Those boobs just look pregnant to me

  28. Marianne says:

Im sure the make-up artist wanted to go for a glowing/ethereal look (maybe to emulate an angel) but yeah…she looked very orange and very shiny. I think the white dress was to also emulate an angel, but it looked more like a nightie.

  29. Jordan says:

She honestly looks like her ex, Abel, in those met gala pictures.

  30. CamoTime says:

The dress was fine and the train was lovely. The face/tan was a disaster.

  31. Valentina says:

To me her dress isn’t terrible. The makeup was off. But I think it was the hair that ruined everything. If she had styled it long and flowing it wouldn’t have been so bad.

  32. Cher says:

She needs Zendaya’s stylist and makeup artist…

  33. raincoaster says:

I cannot believe this dress was custom. Did she say “Make me look pregnant at 45, and braless.”? Have you seen Kiki and Herb’s “Total Eclipse of the Heart”? The boobs are in the same place, and that’s a drag queen playing 60.

  34. Jag says:

I read an article which named the makeup artist and the hair stylist who did that look. They even named the foundation that was used. I can’t believe that actual professionals had anything to do with her look at all, but they did.

It’s surprising that she isn’t posting about having fired them; I would have. (Well, I wouldn’t have walked out the door looking like that because I would’ve done my own hair and makeup after making them leave. lol)

  35. poppy says:

    so many issues.

    #1
big fake boobs that look too big for your tiny frame ARE TOO BIG FOR SPAGHETTI STRAPS. If you want saline implants you have a year before gravity wins. Her tiny strap days are long past.
If you want big fake boobs that don’t sag better get some cheap silicone so you can rock big knockers and tiny straps and supportless gowns.

    #2
you are young and have beautiful skin. Stop covering it -you will have to eventually so enjoy it now. The skin paint did her no favors.
    She looked gross to touch.

She scared. Insecure. Can’t leave the raccoon eyes alone, needs giant chesticles but wants clothing contracts, cares too much what others think. Lost.

  36. j says:

she ran to a car…how is this funny? someone please explain this very funny joke to me.

  37. Jenny says:

I actually think the dress itself is GORGEOUS, but it would have looked better on the runway. A tall, thin model would have rocked it. But we all have different body types, and it simply didn’t suit her. No big deal. But she seems to make a big deal about everything….
