Jennifer Lawrence: ‘If I want a piece of pizza, I eat a piece of pizza’

Jennifer Lawrence has been the biggest name/face attached to Dior for years now. Even though someone like Natalie Portman has been all up in Dior’s representation for years, I tend to associate J-Law with Dior more than any other celebrity woman. I think it’s because she’s contractually obligated to wear so many Dior pieces on red carpets, and Jennifer is always on a red carpet. Sometimes, I think Dior is doing her dirty with the clothes they make for her, but sometimes the union is successful, I have to admit. It’s not surprising that Dior wanted Jennifer to represent their latest fragrance, Dior Joy. She’s an obvious candidate for a major fragrance campaign, and she’ll do a lot of interviews to promote the fragrance. She chatted with Vogue as she filmed the campaign – you can read the piece here. Some highlights:

She loves the smell of Joy: “It’s fresh to me—so many perfumes are too alcohol-y; too fume-y. I smelled the ingredients”—flowers, citrus, cedar, sandalwood, and musk—“on a trip to France, but today was the first time I experienced the finished product, and I’m really happy with it.”

When she feels the prettiest: “After three hours of basically prosthetic makeup. The more fake I have on me, the prettier I feel.”

Her beauty routine when she’s off-camera: “I don’t wear makeup. I always wear sunblock. Low bun. Dior Lip Glow. Sunglasses.”

How she got through the five-day Dior campaign shoot: “I start complaining. I have a pretty strict complaining regimen that I try to stick to. And I eat.”

Her physical training: She trains with Kit Rich, with whom she worked for Red Sparrow: half cardio, half Pilates; using only her body weight for resistance.

She eats: “I don’t like when people say, ‘I only do this or eat this.’ Because I eat. I’m not very strict with my diet: If I want a piece of pizza, I eat a piece of pizza. But I do work out more than normal because I have a certain way that I want to look, and a way that I want to fit into my clothes. I get photographed when I’m not asking for it, so there’s added pressure to look and feel your best. For me, it’s easier to put that extra effort into the gym instead of putting the extra effort into: ‘Oh no, I can’t eat that.’”

Trainers always say that you can’t out-exercise a bad diet. But I don’t really believe that Jennifer’s diet is completely bad – I think she’s being honest about “if I want a piece of pizza, I eat a piece of pizza.” But I also think she probably sticks to an actress-y diet most of the time, as well as exercising a lot. That’s our Jen: super-real.

This campaign is very beautiful, but I have to say… she has such a baby face, I always think she looks a bit clownish when she is very heavily made-up. If I was styling her, I would avoid the strong lip color and just keep her very natural-looking.

Ok. Good for you? So do I. Wow, so relatable!

  2. Tiffany says:

    Okay Jen. Okay.

  3. perplexed says:

Well, she said a piece of pizza — she didn’t say the entire pizza or more than one slice. So, yes, I believe her. I really don’t think she’s lying or exaggerating.

I could scarf down a whole pizza when I lose control, and, yes, it’s bad for your figure. I pay for it the next day.

  4. L84Tea says:

    Sure Jen.

  5. cate says:

    her shtick is so old

  6. ZGB says:

I like what she said about working out and wanting to look a certain way.

In the image at the end of the article, I don’t see any strong lip color, more like pinkinsh nude. I still like her with red lip make up, my favorite being that Vanity Fair cover from a few years ago where she discussed her cyber-hack

LOL Just how revolutionary this woman is! If you are working out daily, a piece of pizza is no big deal. I casually watch my calories. If I plan to eat pizza, I will have light breakfast. If I eat desert, I will have light dinner etc. You do not have to cut off everything and be on strict diet to have a fit and healthy body. Maybe her view is skewed because she is surrounded by people from Hollywood and their very strict diets.

    • Steph says:

Yep, that’s how I do it too. If i eat a lot of fast food that day I try to have a really light dinner like fruit or yogurt. That’s the only way you can do it. Being fit is hard honestly. You have to have a lot of willpower. But I like it because it makes be strict about exercising and being healthy.

    • Betsy says:

It’s revolutionary to hear from a starlet. Admitting a degree of reality in eating/exercising still isn’t common in acting circles. I guess the guys who are doing superhero movies lay it out on the line, but actresses blow so much smoke it’s ridiculous.

  8. Betsy says:

I actually bought the perfume despite Jennifer fronting it. It smells so amazing, like one of the warm, cuddly 80s fragrances modernized. I don’t get south of France, but I’ve never been. I just smell adult, womanly. I love it.

  9. Valerie says:

    Wow. So cool.

She’s in her twenties… When I was her age…I ate whatever i wanted. I didn’t start gaining weight until my thirties. But yeah….if I eat unhealthy food or even a big meals the next day I go hard at the gym. I feel like you have to balance it out. But when I’m in my forties it probably will be different. At least she’s not saying i eat whatever i what and never workout. I can’t stand when people say that.

    • Zip says:

Age does not matter. Calories do. You don’t turn thirty and magically burn less calories. People easily gain weight at any age. For me it was just as hard to keep my weight or even lose some in my teens, my twenties or now my thirties. But maybe that’s just because I’m super short and basically don’t burn anything because of that.

      • detta says:

Oh but age absolutely does matter. At least for some of us. I could eat anything at any time and did not gain weight. For the most part I always ate healthy, but I also enjoyed stuff like pizza, chocolate, you name it. If I felt like a whole pizza and a bag of crisps afterwards, no problem.
That worked fine until I turned 40. After that it was as if a switch had been turned. I absolutely ate the same stuff in the same amount of time, nothing in my routines changed at all (regarding work, fitness regimen etc.). The calories simply stuck more than before. It was not that I turned fat over night, but I gained several kilos over the next ten years. From my late teens til 40 I had kept the same ideal weight without any effort whatsoever.
As you get older your body changes, your metabolism changes. In different ways for different people, yes, and I have friends who had to be careful about their food intake since they were teenagers, so for them the changes over the years did manifest themselves differently and also they are used to being careful about what and how much and at what time of day they eat. But I also know others like myself who, for decades, could eat whatever they wanted – I never even looked at calories or sugar or fat information – but when you get older usually that changes.

      • Nikki says:

Age matters, as you’ll definitely find out, Zip! I gained weight easily, but I could also lose weight easily. But mid-forties, it became incredibly easy to gain weight, and I had to work three times as hard to lose. I did need thyroid medicine, but guess what? Even on thyroid medicine, it requires amazing commitment for me to stay a size 8. Age matters, so my advice is: if you’re unhappy with your weight, do something about it as soon as possible instead of waiting, because it won’t get any easier.

There is absolutely nothing wrong or unhealthy with having a slice of pizza. It gets such an undeserved bad rap. It’s protein with calcium and vegetable (ok, tomato is technically a fruit) and mozzarella is not a high fat cheese. Eating a whole pizza is a different story but there’s nothing wrong with a slice. Like everything else, it’s portion control. Now, if she said she reaches for a tray of lasagna followed by a huge slice of apple pie, that would be different.

  12. Naddie says:

Awesome interview, I don’t get the hate. I applaud her for her honesty about feeling prettier when she’s on full make up, no “I feel pretty when I’m in nature “, or “when I’m loved by my children ” shit. I just don’t forgive dior for choosing a moronic expression for a perfume named “joy” with an actress who’s known for her cheerful personality.

    • enike says:

I think the healthy way (as to the weight control) is eat what you want and work-out a lot – that way you are happy 🙂
I have a fast metabolism, so I can eat everything whatever time, I excercise

But! the down side with some food is – it effects your face…. so, why I eat sometimes healthily (fresh fruit, veg) is to have nice skin

  13. Cate says:

I’m sure she does eat pizza, but let’s be real—it’s unlikely she’s eating it every day, and if she is, it’s a “healthier” pizza option (thinner crust, less cheese, etc.). I’m sure the bulk of her diet is the same veggies, lean protein, blah blah blah that every other actress is eating.

And yes, the fact that she’s still in her 20s probably helps too. I had to start working a LOT harder to keep weight off after 35.

  14. Tina says:

Am I the only one thinking that open mouth in the ad is hilarious? Makes her look kind of … dim. There. I said it.

    • Caligrace says:

Well, she did drop out of middle school…

BTW this perfume BOMBED. The reviews are pretty bad, check them out. I had a chance to smell it at Ulta, it smells like hairspray. Aquanet.

  15. Jana says:

Ahhh… if this is all I had to worry about. Eating a piece of pizza. But I guess this is why they call this sort of stuff Escapism…

    • Nikki says:

Agree on several levels, Jana. By the way, when I buy a bag of some snack food, I don’t look at the calories in a serving. I look at the calories in the entire bag. Just in case! 🙂

  16. RoyalBree says:

How profound. Not. Ugh, this woman turns me off. She’s incredibly shallow. I mean, how can any normal woman relate to another woman who says she needs three hours of heavy prosthetic makeup to look pretty? Mind you, to be miserably bitchy, I don’t blame her. She’s not attractive (to me) at all.

  17. YassQueen says:

Jennifer Lawrence and Natalie Portman are equally annoying. Wish they had some other actresses to represent Dior.
