Britney Spears’ new heavily airbrushed Candies ads

Britney Spears is still posing for junior’s line Candies, even at the ripe old age of 27. The Daily Mail points out that she is way too old for a clothing line aimed at the under 16 crowd – which seems to be the reason she’s been airbrushed into oblivion. In fact the photos look less like a Britney Spears photo than a Britney Spears cartoon. Perhaps some kind of freakishly accurate CGI-esq animation. But they don’t look like a living, breathing person.

It has been a tumultuous couple of years, in which Britney Spears has bounced back after hitting rock bottom. But although the former shaven headed pop star’s past can’t be airbrushed out of history, her image clearly can.

The singer appears in a new national advertising campaign for clothing brand Candie’s looking rather fresh-faced and svelte. The equestrian themed shoot sees Britney model clothes by the label to promote their girlswear line.

But even though she’s too old to wear the range she appears to have had more than a touch of the airbrush in an attempt to appear extremely youthful. The 27-year-old looks more like the Britney of her ‘Hit Me Baby One More Time’ period, when she shot to fame after prancing around in a Lolita-style school uniform for the video.

And it seems she couldn’t help but add some of her usual brand of sexiness into the pictures. Although the line is aimed at 16 and under girls, Britney flashes her bra in a fitted white shirt, and poses sexily in a pair of skintight blue jeans. She also gives a flash of her taut tummy in a cropped top and leggings combination

To be fair, Britney does look good, and it’s not as ridiculous as the work Madonna had done for Louis Vuitton. Making a 27-year-old look – let’s say 19 here – is much less ridiculous than making 50 year old Madge look 25. Nonetheless, they’ve clearly airbrushed a lot of weight off Brit. She’s a lot trimmer than she used to be, but they’re going to take some pounds off a scary, stick-thin model. They’re certainly going to airbrush them off her.

It also sounds like Britney’s latest Candies ads were meant to tie-in directly with her newest single. Talk about cross-promotion.

After showing some serious skin in Candie’s spring ads, Britney Spears covers up in chic dresses and jeans for the upcoming fall campaign. And that’s not the only place you’ll see the pop superstar sporting the affordable line. Britney will even wear Candie’s in her new music video, “Radar.” “I was so excited to wear Candie’s in my ‘Radar’ video,” says Britney in a press release. “I especially loved their jeans and cute dresses which were perfect for the theme of my video.” In her new video, Britney becomes intrigued by a handsome player at a polo match who ultimately gets caught in her radar. Footage from the video will also appear in a Candie’s television commercial which will debut later this summer along with the print ads in September magazines. Check out the video for “Radar” and shop Candie’s exclusively at Kohl’s department stores.

Subtle. Why not just write a song directly about advertising Candies’ shoes?

It says a lot about Britney’s comeback that she’s still got her Candies contract, so I say airbrush away. The bulk of her fans are teenagers and young adults – I doubt many people her own age listen to her anymore. Brit’s got to do what she can to keep them, and that means being in ads that are relevant to their age groups. And frankly I don’t think any of the clothes they have her wearing are ridiculously juvenile or anything. She pulls them all off well. The Daily Mail makes it sound like she’s that pathetic mom wearing teeny tight Abercrombie that she’s stolen from her 13-year-old’s closet. Brit looks good… she just doesn’t look that much like Brit.

I’m all for airbrushing out flaws, but WHY do they photoshop to the point that the person doesn’t even LOOK LIKE THEMSELVES?!

it’s like they don’t just brush out flaws, they change the facial structure.

    UGH.

  2. Annie says:

Oh man…you know, if I were to pick a brand to market (cuz hi, don’t forget, this means you get free shit from them). I would NOT pick Candies unless I was 12 and owned a Bratz doll.

But meh, at least she knows her target audience.

@ Praise: I think I know why they do it; if they want a “Britney-ish” look for the model, they hire her and then after the contract is signed they can do whatever they want to the pics and not be sued. It’s a copyright issue, don’t you think?

  4. Muffett says:

wrong, I’m 30 and listen to her music and I know a lot of people my age that do.

  5. Enonymous says:

All that airbrushed has not made her any prettier, in fact, it has made Britney more fake looking (like a Barbie doll) and by looking at that 3rd photo below, bloated and to have a lazy eye. Britney is naturally a pretty girl, she does not need this much airbrushed anyway.

  6. FashionChallenged says:

Those clothes are aimed at the 16 and under crowd? I would have said 15-20 crowd. Maybe my fashion sense is off. It looks like Bratz dolls come to life.

  7. MissThang says:

Where can I get those boots!? Are those Candies? They’re not on Kohles.com. I love them!

  8. meeps says:

Will you get off your airbrushing/photoshopping kick? ALL PHOTOS for ads are “airbrushed.” The only reason you notice on this ad and the madonna ad, etc. is because you have daily paparazzi photos to compare. Lighting and makeup can have a huge effect on the final image before it’s ever digitally retouched. And almost all images are retouched.

  9. Praise St. Angie! says:

    re-read the posts, meeps.

nobody is complaining about airbrushing/photoshop in general…we acknowledge that it’s used to get rid of flaws…what IS being complained about is the EXTENT to which photoshop is used these days.

as in, they use it to the point that the celeb pictured is almost not recognizable as her/himself. or to the point that the person is not as attractive as they are in real life.

and no, I didn’t notice it bc of the comparison to the pap shots…I noticed it because SHE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE HERSELF.

And Madonna’s? well, I noticed THAT one because they took about 20 years off of her age and reshaped her face.

I really like that long-sleeved top. Why are the Daily Moan getting so bent out of shape with the target-market – I didn’t think they sold that brand on this side of the Atlantic?

But seriously, which fool decided to tempt fate by putting her in brown boots… we all know that Britney and brown boots are a bad bad combination.

LMAO! Ah, how I love your comments Mairead, how I do.

    Ridiculous photoshop

  14. Annie says:

She looks like her oldold pepsi commercial!!! It just hit me! LOL.

  15. Me says:

Don’t forget those Candie’s ads w/ Tori Spelling & her son. They also looked like robot people…even the baby. It must be the “style” they’re going for.

  16. saintdevil says:

Holy Crap! She looks like Linda Hogan!
Probably just the same airbrush-artist, though.

  17. New Fan says:

Good. I never thought I’d say it… We are the same age, NEVER was a fan (thought her music was lame, image was lame, personality was lame etc) but good. After all that has happened in the past few years the fact that she can still hold her head up high has changed my opinion of her. She’s been THROUGH IT, publicly, and she deserves alot more credit than I gave her. I hope her line sells out, and I hope she is around 20 yrs from now. Ima go out and buy her stuff even if I won’t wear it. Even if she’s airbrushed to high hell and looks like a robot LOL. She’s got the makings of a beautiful person

  18. Ellie says:

They definitely go overboard with the airbrushing. Not just with Britney, but with pretty much everyone. It’s crazy. Love her, though!!

  19. jm says:

They airbrush her b/c she is NOT PRETTY!!!!

  20. Jenna says:

There is actually a picture on Perez Hilton (Don’t ask why I decided to go there after so long) of the untouched picture and the one above used as the header. Surprisingly the untouched picture doesn’t look too different. The touched up her roots, slimmed her down in the waist area and did a little bit of retouching on her face. Other than that it looks pretty much the same.

With that said, her face looks so much different than it did years before. Might just be because of her pregnancies in the past few years but she doesn’t look like the same Britney whose music I danced around to in my room at the age of thirteen.

  21. RubySlippers says:

She looks like Nicole Brown Simpson!
