Lady Gaga: ‘I couldn’t make it as an actress, I was bad at auditioning’

A Star Is Born Premiere

Now that the film festival season is transitioning into the awards season, I feel like we should begin to stake out our early positions on various Oscar races. Personally, I was over the Oscar campaign for A Star Is Born as soon as heard about it. The opening story – about Bradley Cooper wiping off Gaga’s makeup – was enough for me to pack it in and decide that I’m not here for A Star Is Born’s Oscar campaign. But it’s going to be a long season, and we’ll see a lot of Gaga and Bradley Cooper in the months to come. So… just try to enjoy it? Don’t take it so seriously, I guess. That’s me giving myself advice! Anyway, enjoy this – Gaga finding her angle in three seconds:

I think this clip speaks to how stiff she is? No disrespect, Gaga is a PERFORMER and she loves to perform everywhere, in life, in interviews, on stage and on the carpet. I don’t really think she knows what “natural” is? Which brings me to this quote from Gaga about why she had such a hard time landing acting roles:

“I couldn’t make it as an actress, I was bad at auditioning. I never got a job…The most challenging part of this process for me was being as vulnerable as the character needed… but [Bradley Cooper] made me feel so comfortable. He challenged me in ways I’ve never been challenged before and I am so so grateful to him for that.”

[From E! News]

I could totally see how Gaga would be “bad at auditioning.” And it’s because of all of that stuff I said before: she’s stiff, she’s affected, everything is a performance. I’ll go into A Star Is Born with an open mind, but I’m telling you right now that I seriously doubt that Gaga will get any Oscar nominations for ACTING. For the songs, sure. But for Best Actress? Eh.

You’re bad at acting as well. I saw AHS and she was sh!t in her episode. She’s a great singer/songwriter and stage performer but she’s not an actress. She can’t do subtle.

    • Char says:

      Just like Madonna, after all.

Both have such crafted personas it’s impossible for them to let it go and get into the character. And it’s impossible for us to see the character and not them.

    • Stella Alpina says:

Co-sign on both comments here. Real acting requires you to lose your ego/yourself so you can inhabit another character’s mind and body, then act it out in subtle ways. Gaga and Madonna perform their personas to exaggerated levels, without any nuance.

A similar thing happened when Cindy Crawford tried to act in a movie. Instead of moving and talking as unself-consciously as possible, she was often modeling – posing and focused on her camera angles – which was very artificial.

    Sure, Jan.

Oh! This is what I was struggling to express in the last post about her Oscar campaign.

The red carpet is a performance and she has so far been not good at it at all. I agree she seems stiff, studied and the complete opposite of vulnerable. That’s not how you run an Oscar campaign and I will be shocked if she manages to get nominated for acting no matter how good she is.+

  4. Div says:

She’s more or less received universal acclaim for acting in this movie. I understand not liking someone’s acting, it’s all subjective, but the reviews certainly point towards her possibly getting an Oscar nomination in the best actress category.

  5. grabbyhands says:

I just find this all almost as annoying as when Courtney Love was nominated for The People vs Larry Flynt and we had to spend an entire awards season watching her pretend to be some wide eyed ingenue.

  6. Maxine says:

I thought she was great in AHS. I’m very critical when it comes to acting and will turn a show off or stop a movie if the acting to bad. I honestly thought she did a good job in both seasons she was in. I have seen nothing but great reviews on the movie so far and cant wait to see it.

    • LadyT says:

I’m with you. Quality acting is my number one criteria when choosing a show. I have no opinion yet on Gaga. Cooper is just ok so far to me, not bad at all, just not great. Somehow he comes across as a bit too earnest is the best I can describe it.

    • Redd says:

i enjoyed her in AHS and I had already made up my mind that she was going to blow the seson for the whole cast, I was surprised at how well she did.

  7. Crumbs says:

I feel like Lady Gaga is a bit like Taylor Swift in this matter. They’re both performers who are comfortable in front of thousands, yet they’re uncomfortable still in their own bodies. They’re too self aware. Everything is about striking poses. Neither can act. I’m over this movie so much already, and I can’t even take her seriously with all that surgery now.

  8. smcollins says:

“Vogue” immediately started playing in my head when I watched that video clip. She knows how to strike a pose, that’s for sure.

  9. Pinar O says:

Pls google her ‘jo calderone’ alter ego performance at the mtv vmas several years ago – she truly CAN act

    You’re right!!
Which is what makes Barbra Streisand so unique. while she has, in my opinion, the best voice that we’ll ever hear, all SHE wanted was to be taken seriously as a director. she is a truly gifted actress, but the director thing for her (outside of Yentl and Prince of Tides) was kind of elusive.
if you have this much talent, why can’t you be happy being who are what you are ?

Oh my god, if I owned that dress I would never take it off. I freaking LOVE that molten silver design. That dress is gorgeous and completely cool.

She did a Vogue 72 questions video and it was awful! I usually love those videos even if I don’t like the person in them but hers was so boring. All she did was sit there and the camera guy was really far away, it felt so weird. And her answers were so generic. I miss Mother Monster Gaga. I don’t think I’m here for this version of her.
