Gigi Hadid: ‘Yeah, I know I’m skinny…I’m trying to eat burgers and do squats’

Milan Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2019 - Alberta Ferretti - Catwalk

I sometimes get this confused, but here’s the difference between the Hadid sisters: Bella Hadid has Lyme disease, and Gigi Hadid has Hashimoto’s disease. I don’t doubt those diagnoses, but I do doubt why both of their ailments seem to have led to exact same thing: noticeable weight loss, when both of the diseases cause weight GAIN for most people. It’s almost like young models are discouraged from saying “I felt the need to lose weight as I got more work work as a model.” Or even this: “people within the modeling industry encouraged me to lose weight as I became more famous.” Anyway, Gigi took part in a Vogue panel discussion, and she talked about her weight loss and how much she wants to gain some weight back.

Gigi Hadid clapped back impressively at internet trolls who call her too skinny and has been candid about a struggle with Hashimoto’s disease that has caused her to lose weight, but even so, the supermodel admits she’s not immune to the criticism – and that certain things affect her more than others.

“I loved my body when I was curvier,” Hadid, 23, told Vogue Runway Director Nicole Phelps during a panel alongside Kendall Jenner, Ashley Graham and Paloma Elsesser. “Then as I lost [the weight], people were still mean.”

She continued by saying, “Yeah, I know I’m skinny. I’m looking in the mirror. I’m trying to eat burgers and do squats. I want an ass too. I get it. I got it. Thank you!”

[From People]

I liked Gigi’s figure when she first started getting a lot of work too – she had such a healthy-looking, athletic-curvy body. She looked great in clothes, she was strikingly beautiful and fresh-looking. And now… she has that tired, deflated look that so many people have when they focus too much on losing weight. Kim Kardashian has that look too. So maybe burgers and squats aren’t the answer?

OK…what happened in that last photo? I thought she was Bella for a moment. Of all this crop of Insta-models, I thought Gigi was the most beautiful and fresh-faced, even if she wasn’t necessarily the best model. Now…wtf?

  2. Daisy says:

Say I’m mean, but I don’t believe she has Hashimoto’s, sorry. She was 100% told she needed to lose weight (even tho she looked incredible when she started). Tommy Hilfiger himself said he put a big coat on her to hide her body in a runaway show. And her mother is another one, never forget that RHOBH episode in which Gigi had a modelling gig and was on a diet so Yolanda just told her to “chew on a almond” if she got hungry.

    • RedTop says:

Gigi annoys the absolute crap out of me. I honestly don’t think she has this disease either (because how convienent she gets this diagnosis right when they tell her to lose weight for more jobs), and she just recently stated how she has never called a paparazzi before, which is such a lie. Her and her sister lie constantly, but are never called out. She’s had drug rumors for ages, that is probably how she lost all that weight (that she never needed to lose).

    • km says:

If you’re mean, so am I. I don’t believe she, or anyone in her family, is actually sick. I remember that RHOBH where Yolanda told her to eat an almond if she got hungry. I also remember Yolanda doing that crazy lemonade cleanse and I think she may have had the girls on it too. That may have been the reason Gigi was told to eat said almond. Just own it! You want or need to be skinny for your job. Good God, when did telling the truth become so difficult for people?

    • Kerfuffle says:

We have literally seen her mom on camera helping keep Gigi to an incredibly strict diet.

    • Myrtle says:

Hashi’s is an UNDERactive thyroid autoimmune disease. Low thyroid makes it hard to lose weight, not easy, at least for the majority. If she wanted to fake-blame her weight loss on her thyroid, the AI disease she wants is Graves. Not that I’d wish either on anyone.

  3. Mela says:

Omg shut up. We all know you dont eat anything , let alone a cheeseburger.

  4. Mommy2b says:

She looks healthy to me. Wanting an ass and gaining weight are two different problems from my experience. I would try to gain weight to get a butt but the fat never ended up in the “right” places. I think she means she wants to gain muscle.

  5. erika says:

If she wants to gain weight then eat a healthy amount of calories of healthy food, not burgers. But whatever floats her boat.

  6. Swack says:

My daughter works at a eating disorder rehab and they are strictly monitored when it comes to eating and exercise. While doing squats will give more tone to your thighs and rear end, they also burn calories. So if she is trying to gain weight she also needs to watch the amount of exercise she is doing. Not saying that she shouldn’t do any but should watch how much she works out.

  7. Kitten says:

The “eat a burger” line needs to die a swift death. Like most women, I would imagine that her figure is subject to a weight spectrum and right now, she’s probably on the low end. Is it due to her illness? Maybe, but probably not. I would guess a hectic schedule and cocaine are the more likely causes.

I do think she’s stunningly beautiful.

    • isabelle says:

Burger aren’t actually high calories if you leave off the cheese and bacon. Calorie wise, it is not how you fatten up

  8. Alexis says:

The lies need to stop. Why can’t they just admit the truth? They like how they look (or at least they realize it benefits them professionally) and they work hard to get that way.

  9. skipper says:

She has lost weight and she doesn’t deny that but she doesn’t look unhealthy. At least not to me. I don’t know. I think all of this emphasis on women’s weight is so damaging. I hate it so much.

    • lamaga says:

^This, Skipper. I despise the focus and honestly I think these soundbites are gross.

    • xdanix says:

Maybe she looks a little healthier now, but there was a point during her weight loss period where she ABSOLUTELY did not look healthy. I saw photos of her stomach that were very alarming- it was pretty much concave-looking. She’s maybe not as worryingly-thin looking as she was but she still is very, very thin nowadays, the kind of thin you don’t get to be without significant effort to look that way.

And sorry, I don’t believe her either about the disease she supposedly puts all the weight loss down to. I’m in a pretty good place to judge her claims, because I DO have it. I also struggled with an eating disorder for years. I know which made me look as thin as her. It wasn’t anything to do with my thyroid.

      • Kay says:

I also have Hashimoto’s and I am skinny although I eat more than any other woman I know. It is hard for me to gain a couple of pounds, especially as only with a healthy diet without gluten, sugar and dairy I can keep my hormones balanced. As soon as I slip up in my diet my Hashimoto’s flames up again. I know that most people with Hashimoto’s tend to gain weight, but that’s not true for all people.
Also, Gigi sometimes has a swollen face like in the first pic. I tend to get that as well whenever my hormones are off.

      • Aurelia says:

Not sure if she has a swollen face. They just haven’t contoured her. She looks totally different.

      • gemcat says:

And to second Kay, kinda…I had really bad neurological Lyme disease and have never been as skinny as when I did. I went from 120lbs to way under 110lbs (didn’t want to know how far below) in a few months (I’m 5.4) *the pesky Borrelia bacteria thrive in a low body temperature so it makes sense.. so whereas for some it triggers stress-eating, for me it didn’t..everyone’s story is different! That doesn’t mean they don’t have EDs or that they are not pressured by the modelling industry to conform to certain weight standards..just that that the “reasons” they’ve stated clearly correspond to some of us, and shouldn’t be dismissed for those reasons alone..

  10. liriel says:

Frankly, I thought she was STUNNING before.
As for excuses. I’m not a model, I got into exercise while eating everything (ok, maybe eating like a vegan on some days contributed) and got skinny, my period stopped. Then I got early lyme disease diagnose and now I’m really EATING but I have to literally force myself to eat more (hey, I start a day with two avocados, ok?) to gain weight, I really miss not looking so bony and my chest and we’ll see what happens but usually I was very suspicious but now with no reason to lose weight and every reason to simply maintain my optimal one I’m forcing myself. yeah, exercise doesn’t help with that but I love sports so.. today I heard that I lost too much weight from a taxi driver. I’m just saying that I kind of understand her point. She remembers the time when she had an ass and boobs.. in her case the modeling industry got to her but.. Idk.

  11. Lora says:

I have the same disease and its actually the opposite, you‘re gaining weight

  12. Kerfuffle says:

Uh huh. And how many almonds was it that Yolanda had her limited to on RHOBC? That was even during Gigi’s “curvy” days.

  13. MellyMel says:

She looks healthy to me. Like a year or two ago she got way too skinny, but I think she looks good right now. I don’t know much about the disease, so I’m not gonna say she’s lying about that or not.

  14. Honey bear says:

Look at her face! How much cocaine do you think she consumes on a daily basis?

  15. TrixC says:

How do you “try” to eat a burger? To misquote Yoda, eat or don’t eat, there is no try!

    • Agenbiter says:

      Excellent misquote!

    • Erin says:

While I have my doubts that her skinniness is due to Hashimotos I have to defend her here. Sometimes it IS hard to force food down. Several years back I lived across from a factory that was leaking and I got very sick and lost a ton of weight. I always felt like I was going to die because I was losing weight so fast and the idea of eating was repulsive. I couldn’t force down very much and it was terrifying for me. My body would’ve gone into shock if I’d tried to feed it things like burgers. When people have serious illnesses it DOES make it really difficult to eat sometimes.

    • Alyse Leitao says:

I have to try not to eat a burger… and usually fail lol

  16. anniefannie says:

I think she’s stunning and I’ve always had a soft spot since she tweeted support for the Zayn guy when he acknowledged his anxiety.
I’m also tired of people feeling entitled to know her info re:weight or eating issues. She’s a model, there’s pressure end of story….

  17. HoffDNA says:

Hashimoto’s caused me to lose 30 pounds because my main hypothyroid symptom is extreme nausea. Not a great way to lose weight, and not easily managed with synthetic thyroid hormone because it’s mostly an autoimmune disease.

  18. BooRadley says:

untrue statements, Lyme disease is actually known to cause severe weight loss, because there are so many food that have adverse reactions and can make symptoms much worse. as for gigi and her hashimodo disease I have no idea.

  19. Tw says:

Lies. And if she wants to gain weight she could cut down on the coke.

  20. NeoCleo says:

I find Gigi to be cute, not conventionally beautiful. He sister Bella has the beauty but her eyes are so dead in photos. On the other hand, Gigi is the better model because her eyes have life in them and her facial expressions are more interesting in photo shoots.

  21. WiccanChicken says:

Not that I necessarily think she’s telling the truth, but I’ve got Hashimoto’s and I’m more or less the same build as she is right now. I remember going to the doctor and saying I thought I might have it (I was exhausted all the time) and they weren’t even going to test me until they heard my mom had it too (premenopause she was also very thin). So it might be rare to be thin with a hypothyroid but it’s not completely unheard of.
