Prince William bragged about how Prince George ‘loves’ to dance, just like Diana

Prince George is in big-boy school, and Thomas’s Battersea exposes all of their kids to the same curriculum. That curriculum involves coding-for-kids, general computer literacy (one would assume) and… ballet. Boys and girls are learning ballet, accompanied by a live pianist. According to Prince William, George absolutely loves his ballet class. This is so sweet – the rhythm is in his blood, you know. Princess Diana loved to dance, and she took dancing classes throughout her life.

You can find Prince George on the dance floor! While hosting a reception at Kensington Palace for inspirational teens last week, Prince William spoke to 14-year-old Junior, a dancer who campaigns against bullying. It turns out that William’s 5-year-old son also has some moves, the proud royal revealed.

“George is doing dancing as well, he loves it,” William said in a video shared by Kensington Palace. The little prince may have inherited that passion from his late grandmother, Princess Diana. “My mother always used to dance, she loved dancing,” William told Junior, adding some advice: “And if it’s something you love, you do what you love. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. Keep at it.”

George has been brushing up on his ballet skills while at school. His Year 1 curriculum at Thomas’s Battersea includes a 35-minute ballet lesson each week. (Each class is accompanied by a live pianist!) The curriculum follows the Royal Academy of Dance Pre-Primary in Dance syllabus and will develop students’ physical skills, stamina, creative, expression and musicality.

William actually doesn’t specify that George loves ballet in particular – it could just be that George loves to dance in general, and it’s not ballet-specific. Maybe he likes to get turnt in the palace whilst blasting Dua Lipa. I like that William isn’t one of those fathers telling his son not to dance because of gender stereotypes or whatever – credit to William for even bragging about George’s love of the dance.

I like stories like this. And honestly, I’ll take pretty much any article that shows amusing photos of the Cambridge kids. I’m actually starting to get excited for the Sussex baby because I can’t imagine him or her not being a charming little toddler as well.

My nephew is the same age as George and he loves to dance too. He loves getting his nails painted as well. He liked putting some lip gloss on when I did. I hope that his interests in both of the stereotypical masculine/feminine stuff stays as he grows.

Dance is for everyone! I wish more parents (and society) encouraged boys and men to dance.

I think it also depends on the culture. There are some cultures where dancing is part of the norm & everyone partakes in it.

I just had a fun image of little George doing fouette turns in front of a mirror haha. I think it’s great they are encouraging him to use his body for expression. I did ballet as a kid. I was terrible and the only reason I stuck with it was because I hated sports because my mom insisted I had to do some kind of physical activity since I refused to be part of any school sports teams. Maybe they’ll take him to the ballet! The Nutcracker is always fun for kids.

Does anyone have experience loving ballet classes at that age? To me they were about disciplined forms and repeating positions. They weren’t what a child who loves rhythmic musical movement would consider dancing … ?

    • Erinn says:

A lot of people at work have their kids in dance – a bunch of different styles. The kids seem to love it- some as young as George.

    • Agenbiter says:

Right – my question was about ballet in particular.

It was said Diana loved the freedom dance gave her and that starting a habit of rocking out alone with the music up and doors closed helped her overcome her bulimia and maintain her sanity. Not saying dance lessons are child abuse, I just wouldn’t draw a parallel between five-year-olds in ballet classes and what dance meant to Diana.

I started ballet at 3 years old & did it for nearly 10 years – from memory the first few years are more basics + a focus on fun & expression (and we did it to the Royal British Ballet syllabus.
We used to pretend to be witches, fairies, ‘the weather’ and dance around having fun but also learning.
Then it evolved over time into more formal stuff.
If he’s doing ballet at school, they may be skewing it more to fun/expression than examination prep anyway?

      • Agenbiter says:

Thanks for the perspective. I took a ballet class around age seven. It was fine, but I actually don’t remember ‘dancing’ it it at all!

Gary Janetti is going to have fun with this story!! (Follow him on Instagram if you don’t already – absolutely hilarious Windsor content)

    • Maleficent says:

He has a creepy obsession with a 5 year old that’s not normal

      • Diplomanatee says:

He was one of the writers behind Stewie from Family Guy, so it’s obvious he drew inspo from him to make his George character quite similar.

        So no, not creepy.

        And yes, totally hilarious.

    • Maleficent says:

Yeah he’s in the same boat as that director of that Guardians of the Galaxy. Hollywood has plenty dudes like him.

  7. Jadered says:

Most children at George’s age love to dance. It also demonstrates that he’s not as shy as people try to make out!

  8. Maleficent says:

It’s cool George is into dancing. Hopefully he will grow up to be the first Windsor male with rhythm. So when he gets filmed in the club dancing people won’t make fun of him like we did his dad and uncle in the past.

    • PrincessK says:

Excuse me Charles and Harry have rhythm. I have not seen Philip or William dancing.

      • Nic919 says:

I thought everyone had seen William’s dad dancing at Verbier. Diana’s dancing gene skipped a generation.

      • Myo says:

I’ve seen Harry’s dancing and it’s not good! Both Harry & William are embarrassing dancers but at least they try!

    Cute story William!!
