Jennifer Lopez in Valentino at the ‘Second Act’ LA premiere: too cutesy or just fine?

True story: I absolutely love dumb romantic comedies and “ladies are doing it for themselves” movies. Jennifer Lopez has made many of those kinds of films, and that’s what her latest is – Second Act is sort of like a mature version of the early ‘90s classic Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead. Jennifer stars as a woman from the outer borough who, through lies and competence, finds herself at a high-powered job in Manhattan. I’ve watched the trailer a few times and I think it looks SO cute. It’s not going to win awards, but if you want to watch a silly, lady-centric movie over the holidays, I think this will do.

The LA premiere of Second Act was last night, and they did the styling for the premiere backdrop like a “winter wonderland.” Very Christmas-y. Jennifer wore a Valentino baby-doll dress, basically. While I think this dress is “too cute” for a 49 year old woman, I also think Jennifer looks amazing. Like, I would flat-out hate this on most women. Jennifer pulls it off, shoulder ruffles and all.

Jennifer also happily posed with her costars, Vanessa Hudgens, Milo Ventimiglia (he plays Jennifer’s boyfriend/husband) and Leah Remini (Jennifer’s long-time BFF in real life).

All I see is Ariana Grande in 20 years.

      Hahahahahahaha

    • kim says:

hahahahaha i said out loud, “ooooh that would look good on ariana!”

jlo doesnt look very good this time, because the look ages her bad!

Normally, she’s age less, but with the badly executed make up, and the “edgy” tween dress? she looks like an old lady on Halloween. She wants people to percieve her as “youthful” and this doesn’t.

      • Kitten says:

This completely. She is utterly stunning and looks a good 15 years younger than her age but this outfit looks ridiculous on her. It would be fun on someone in her twenties (and yes Ariana would work) maybe but not on J Lo.

And I don’t mean to age-shame. As I said, a woman as gorgeous as J Lo can pull off a LOT of sexy/younger looks but this ain’t it. Even J Lo has limitations.

  2. Megan says:

Jennifer looks fabulous for a woman of any age, but she needs dial back on the lip filler, she doesn’t need it to be gorgeous.

    • Jag says:

      Agreed!

    • Alexandria says:

Totally agree. She’s so gorgeous even without makeup.

    • Kitten says:

I’ve always assumed that she got lip fillers but that it was tastefully done. Here, it looks a bit more obvious, though…

    • BchyYogi says:

Look at the photo w Jen & Vanessa- then switch their head and it “works”.

    • Delphi says:

I think the culprit might be her make up artist rather than lip fillers- if you zoom in you can see the lines where her lips naturally end and where they’ve been overdrawn! I might be wrong, but either way it’s way too much.

I don’t love this outfit on her either, but not because it’s ‘too young’ for her age. It made me (and loads of other commenters) immediately think of Ariana, and JLo is a big enough star that she doesn’t need to wear derivative outfits or step on other people’s signature looks. I’m not saying she was copying Ariana’s style deliberately, just that she’s an icon and should be rocking more original looks.

  3. L84Tea says:

Wednesday Addams, the sexy Halloween version. Yikes.

  4. Nev says:

    amazing.

  5. huckle says:

I do not like the thigh-highs with this dress at all.

  6. Serphina says:

While she looks great, I can’t condone this outfit. It looks like she is in a play and hs the part of a doll.

  7. Debby says:

Jennifer always overdoes it for me style-wise. She is an absolutely gorgeous woman and in some classical pieces she’d look still amazing but also sophisticated but somehow she always seems to go for something that looks somewhat cheap. This outfit is no different. That being said, at least she’s not wearing a pink bathrobe.

  8. Sandra says:

Isn’t Jennifer in her late 40’s? This is a ridiculous choice and would look so cute on a much younger girl.

    • DiegoInSF says:

But she looks late 20s. She can pull it off. Can we stop with the “she’s X age, therefore she shouldn’t…”? Thanks.

      • Mimi says:

She’s a striking woman but she does not look like a twentysomething, other than her clothing.

      • Pandy says:

Agree mimi. Her outfit is ridiculous. Big fail. Like some sexy Victorian child costume or something. Nope.

      • Tiffany :) says:

She doesn’t look like she is in her 20s, and there is nothing wrong with that. Obviously she isn’t pulling it off or people wouldn’t be commenting. People aren’t saying “cover it up”, etc., they are saying that peter pan collars with baby doll shapes look too juvenile for someone who is a mature woman. I think if the outfit had one of those features, not both, it would have been so much better.

  9. Renee2 says:

Hey everybody, JLo’s mouth is closed!! Like, in all of the pictures.

I clicked on this because I was excited to see what she would wear but I am disappointed in this. She still looks good but she could look so much better than this.

I am going to see this film and am looking forward to it. It doesn’t look great, not terrible, it will likely be a solid b – b+ but when I first saw the trailer for it I laughed because I couldn’t even pretend to myself that I wasn’t going to watch it.

    • Kitten says:

“Hey everybody, JLo’s mouth is closed!!”

Haha that was literally the first thing I noticed, before the dress. Someone must have finally told her 🙂

    • Tiffany :) says:

      It’s a Christmas Miracle!

    • lucy2 says:

Finally! That was the worst expression and she did it ALL. THE. TIME.

She’s so pretty, I wish she wouldn’t try so damn hard, she doesn’t need to.

    • kellybean says:

Maybe she ate spinach or broccoli or had a poppy seed bagel right before arriving at this and wasn’t quite sure if she had anything stuck in her teeth so she played it safe by keeping her mouth shut.

  10. Gemma13 says:

I’m so excited for this stupid movie. I already know I’m going to love it. I don’t really listen to her music or watch her tv show/s? but damnit I’m here for all her movies and interviews. Especially when they throw in the love of my life, Milo Ventimiglia. *swoon*

  11. Enough S Enough says:

This is a serious miss because it does the exact opposite of what she wants: it makes her look old.

  12. Lisa says:

A miss for Jlo. That look is too twee and ages her a bit.

  13. Ib says:

I neeeeeed Leah’s tiger print dress! I’ve searched but cant find credits for it —does anyone know the designer?

  14. Wellsie says:

What is this tragic backdrop for the photos? Who okayed the draped sheets?!

  15. Lexilla says:

Sounds more like Working Girl to me. Which is just fine! Can’t wait to see it.

  16. maraidh says:

    Way too young and cutesy.
Extra points for no mouth breathing. 🙂

  17. SpillDatT says:

She is gorgeous but the dress is too twee. Leah on the other hand looks more appropriate.

  18. Tallia says:

    No Jen, no.
