Here are some photos of Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie at the London premiere of Mary Queen of Scots. Neither woman really killed it sartorially, but if you’re making me choose, I’ll say that Margot’s Rodarte gown and Marilyn-styling is more pleasing and glamorous. I don’t know what Saoirse was thinking with her Carolina Herrera look though. A month ago, I thought (and some other people might have thought too) that Mary Queen of Scots would be in the conversation for some big awards. So far, nothing much is happening – the film was completely shut out of the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards. Maybe Margot and Saoirse’s fashion choices reflect that too – they’re just kind of phoning it in.
I’m also including some premiere photos of Jack Lowden too – he’s their costar, and he plays Lord Darnley, who is Mary’s bisexual husband. Obviously, he had a lot of scenes with Saoirse. And love blossomed:
Irish beauty Saoirse Ronan is dating her “Mary Queen of Scots” co-star Jack Lowden, Page Six has exclusively learned. The 24-year-old three-time Oscar nominee Ronan turned up with hunky Lowden, 28, at a celebrity screening of their new movie Tuesday night, and they looked extremely close at the after-party at Tavern on the Green, sources said.
“Jack was following her all over,” said a source. “He even followed her to the bathroom and was waiting outside for her. They were very close.”
In “Mary Queen of Scots,” Lowden — who previously starred in “Dunkirk” — plays Ronan’s on-screen husband Lord Darnley, a bisexual cheater with an unfortunate fate. Off-screen, Ronan was at first believed to be dating Lowden’s ballet dancer brother Calum after they met at the BAFTAs this year. But more recently, eagle-eyed fans have spotted Ronan with Jack on vacation in the Dominican Republic and other spots. A movie source told us of Ronan and Jack: “We don’t know when they got together, we only found out on Tuesday night when they rolled up together — but they seem very happy and sweet.”
This is the first time I’ve even heard about Saoirse dating ANYONE, which means she’s either incredibly discreet, or a workaholic who rarely dates, or both. Jack recently had a big, ginger beard, but he seems to have shaved it in just the past week. He’s nice looking. I hope he treats Saoirse like a queen.

Question – Does anyone know why Saoirse doesn’t have a French accent in this film? Mary was raised in France and I’m sure Saoirse has excellent accent skills.
Honestly, I’m a bit of a history nut and the trailer looked downright bad and inaccurate to me. That’s probably why it’s not getting awards-show love.
Perhaps Mary was surrounded by a Scottish household growing up who would speak to her in English with a Scottish accent while the other people surrounding her would speak French with French accents and Mary achieved full fluency in both.
If you’re raised with two languages growing up, it’s quite easy to have two completely different accents when speaking different languages if a person was raised speaking both languages from childhood into adulthood. Adults who have achieved fluency in another language later in life will still maintain the accent of their original language because they’ve developed the habit of their original accent.
So it’s really not that farfetched that Saoirse has Mary speak with a Scottish accent for all the English speaking scenes in the movie, as some claim. Look at Lily Rose Depp who speaks perfect French (and spent a good chunk of her life raised there) while also going full American when speaking English.
I think historians would disagree with you. Quite a few came out when the trailer was released to say the accent was appalling oversight.
Mary barely spoke English but she did speak Scots…

Fair enough so…I’m no expert on Mary historically. If she’s believed to have spoken with a French accent and didn’t speak English, then that’s annoying.
I think a lot of historical films have an accent problem, tbh. It can be distracting but I get over it bc a lot of times even good actors are dreadful at accents. So maybe it’s a casting issue?
Isn’t there a joke about the large number of films where no matter what country someone is supposed to be from, they all have a British accent? Especially American films. The British accent just indicates that they’re foreign.
If you really want to get into it, then it’s inaccurate that they would speak English at all in many stories. Like a WWII movie where all the Nazis are speaking English to each other with German accents. More films now go the way of subtitles, but it’s still out there.
But one of the first things I learned about in theater and then in film school was the “suspension of disbelief” bc if you want everything to be perfect and completely realistic (this applies more in theater), you’re not going to enjoy the story. But I understand if it’s something big for you, it ruins it.

This! Stan twitter is nuts. Also I can’t believe she’s 24 already, in my mind she still is that little girl from Atonement who has no business dating attractive grown-up British dudes!!!
Surely everything depends on the role at issue? Saoirse was up against JLaw for Hunger Games – and I think they made the right choice for that particular role by going with Lawrence. (I know it’s boringly fashionable now to sneer at JLaw – but she hasn’t got four Oscar noms for nothing. Same for Stone.)
PS: Stan twitter likes to project onto new stars – part of the reason why, after their profile rises, a backlash kicks in as hopeful expectations are disappointed.
JLaw didn’t deserve her noms for American hustle or Joy. JLaw is great in some things but phones it in in others. Her performance in the xmen franchise is shockingly bad. Good actors don’t pick and choose what their good in. They use the same level of commitment and preparation for any project (no matter what the budget) Emma Stone has got a lot better but she does have a habitat of playing herself in every role (sarcastic but sweet girl next door).
Jack Lowden is so hot and so talented, I approve.
Poor Saoirse and Margot. They did this movie for Oscars and they ended up with nothing
I saw it Sunday with my parents; they were both really good in it but we walked away like, meh…. my father was a history teacher and said it was mostly accurate. But, we were all confused; the other accents were very thick. Saoirse’s French was good; I thought she sounded Irish though in certain parts. The costumes and scenery were beautiful, but overall it wasn’t an Oscar film.
Margot looks lovely except for her horrible eye shadow. It’s not a killer look but it’s vavavoom and nice. I think both girls were having fun with a bit of theme dressing. Margot has some red roses on white and black patterned fabric – a play at Tudor roses perhaps? Saoirse’s dress has some elements of the fashions of the time with the high ruffled neck etc.
I think the historical inaccuracies reported have killed my interest in this film. I’m fascinated by both women and think they are more than interesting enough to make films about without inventing a bunch of stuff. I don’t like this idea of blaming Mary’s downfall solely on the “bad men” around her, and I don’t like the undercutting of the utterly incredible woman Elizabeth was by painting her as cold and jealous and insecure.
Quite frankly, Mary made a number of terrible choices (in tough circumstances, but still). She was brave and fierce but headstrong and rushed into foolish decisions. She was raised to be the Queen Consort of a highly centralised and authoritarian monarchy and was ill-prepared for ruling Scotland which was a very different proposition indeed.
Elizabeth was one of the best educated monarchs in existence at the time, spoke numerous languages fluently, and was noted by many people (including international visitors from the time she was a child into adulthood and queenhood) to be incredibly intelligent and educated, witty, interesting and charismatic. She had survived the chaos and uncertainty of her father’s court and her sister’s court, she had learned the lessons of her mother and step-mothers, she developed strong advisors and heard their council. She was far from perfect but I have read about how she is portrayed in this movie and it bothers me.
Yes, I agree…. Elizabeth was made out to look indecisive, and the scene in the barn when she holds her coat against herself to make her shadow look pregnant annoyed me. From what I know about her rule, she was competent and what you mention. I DO think Mary made bad choices; and while she was probably forced to marry her third husband, in doing that so close to her 2nd being murdered, she was made to look like a whore. I read that he abducted and raped her. The end scene where Mary and Elizabeth meet in secret apparently never happened in real life. I don’t think they ever met in person. Very interesting historical period though; Elizabeth always interested me.
I believe the general conclusion is that Darnley (Mary’s second husband) was a terrible choice and Mary encouraged Bothwell (her third husband) to murder him – she was very convincing – something that can be seen throughout her life. Bothwell then kidnapped and raped her and most believe she married him so that the rape could be covered up. This backfired horribly – the obvious murder, the hurried marrying of the murderer almost immediately. The Scots were displeased to say the least.
Elizabeth was known to make decisions at the last minute at times but painting her as indecisive and weak in any way is ridiculous. The woman was a marvel. In regards to her looks – yes they faded and yes she wasn’t happy about it; but the woman was capable of making men fall in love with her (rapturously so) and be convinced she would marry them well after smallpox scarred her – think a 24 year old Duke of Anjou when she was 46.
They absolutely never met. Mary requested it over and over and was denied.
Showmance, fauxmance. He’s generic and forgettable in any case. I love her dress though.
I like him as an actor. He and Jessie Buckley were among my favorites of 2015’s version of War & Peace. Also like Saorise so good for them.
Oddly I rather like both of these dresses – with a nod to their roles/costumes.
On ellen some time ago she played the game ‘who’d you rather’ and she seemed uncomfortable and akwardly said she doesnt really date and i was shocked, shes so talented and gorgeous
