Emily Blunt in Zuhair Murad at the Paris ‘Mary Poppins’ premiere: lovely or nah?

'Mary Poppins Returns' premieres in France

Emily Blunt is a stylish woman, I don’t think that’s in doubt. She rarely phones it in, and you can tell that she pays attention to trends and what’s happening in fashion at the moment. She has a stylist, and I’m sure they work together to build “style stories” for promotional tours. But can I just say? I so rarely LIKE what Emily wears. I respect her as a Fashion Girl, and I rarely think she looks flat-out terrible. But I just think she has a bad picker when it comes to red carpet looks.

Emily’s look for the Paris premiere of Mary Poppins Returns is a perfect example. She chose a patterned Zuhair Murad dress with a built-in cape, made out of the same fabric. The pattern isn’t awful, the cut is flattering, and I enjoy capes. But altogether, I dislike this? The prominent flowers on her boobs, the detailing on the shoulder, the length of the skirt… I just want to start from the beginning and rework this completely. The biggest thing is that this should have been a full-length gown, and the white-and-red flowers on the fabric shouldn’t have been tailored to look like pasties.

Lin-Manuel Miranda looks nice on this promotional tour – I’m glad he’s not doing the “dude thing” of underdressing while his female costar is wearing couture. Lin seems to be wearing suits and beautiful dress coats.

I actually really like this (it also looks so much richer and more vibrant in the second two pics, which I guess is the lighting?). The only thing I’d change is that belt thing around the middle… not sure if it needs it? And if it does, the leather (pleather??) just looks kind of cheap.

I like it, too except for the boob flowers…which are utterly ridiculous. I’d even accept the belt before the boob flowers, which end up making the whole thing look ridiculous…IMO

This is great. It reminds me of Mary Poppins’ carpet bag – in the most delightful way!

  3. ValiantlyVarnished says:

This is stunning. She looks amazing. My only nitpick is that I wish they had done more with her hair. Other than that she looks beautiful.

  4. Eliza says:

With a better hair color this would be a knockout.

This hair/ brow color combination does her no favors.

  5. Jojo says:

I’ve barely looked at her dress because the first thing I noticed is her bad makeup job. Emily Blunt is lovely, and her makeup artist did her no favors whatsoever, far too harsh.

    • Pandy says:

Yes!!! She looks ill and a good 15 years older than she is. Maybe she is ill – it is flu season! Not a good look.

  6. Originaltessa says:

Her hair washes her out so much. She’s so stunning with the Auburn or brown hair.

  7. minx says:

I wish she would go darker with her hair.

  8. KidV says:

I love the dress and think it looks great on her. Her hair looks bad, though. And the bad hairstyle makes her makeup look bad. It her hair were up and away from her face her makeup would look better.

  9. Serphina says:

Love the look if the cape would just be taken off.

  10. Usedtobe says:

The dress looks great on her but she has so much make up caked onto her face, it looks like a mask. Yuck!

  11. ChillyWilly says:

I would love this dress if it were longer and she ditched the cape.

  12. Anastasia says:

I feel like that belt thing really competes with/cuts the fabric, which is too pretty for that.

From front on, her shoes look like the classic Payless sandals that older ladies like to wear. And people please STOP with the I have to pee pose!

I agree with the others about her hair color and being washed out. Just 1-2 levels darker would be amazing.

  13. Beach Dreams says:

I like it! It might look a little busy between the pattern and the cape, but she pulls it off. The blonde definitely makes her look wan though. Not sure that shade of red lipstick helps either.

  14. Yo yo says:

Her face is not pretty here

  15. SM says:

I actualy like it. And a great red lip. I can never pull this off

  16. LWT00 says:

Who can focus on the dress when all I see is a terrible make-up and hair job!? Emily has such a beautiful, distinctive face. This make up ages her at least 10 years and flattens all her features. The hair washes her out terribly.

Fire the make up artist and go back to darker hair.

  17. Mox says:

Blonde is not her color and she refuses to accept it.

  18. Agenbiter says:

    Chest poppies: yea or nay?

  19. Notanotherpostcard says:

I don’t mind the dress, but her face looks so greasy/shiny. Not a nice glow, rather like she just ate fried chicken…

    LMM looks great
