I can actually understand what Miley is saying, so i like her version much better.

  2. Switch Pretty says:

And that’s a no for me. A bit pitchy and way too high for her so many parts she’s almost talking through.

  3. Sonia says:

Miley sounds like a dying goat.

    • KidV says:

LOL. I’m always surprised at her voice, I don’t expect that rough of a voice coming out of someone so young.

I really don’t like the sound of her voice. It’s very nasal and abrasive. She has one “sound” that she can produce, and unfortunately, it’s not pleasant for me to listen to.

Sometimes having a signature sound can really work for a singer, but other times it can be very limiting. For me, I find her sound very limiting.

I’ll never unhear the goat dying in her voice. Oh Lord. More like a husky chipmunk to my ears, but do love a barnyard/woodland melody…

i guess this thread just goes to show that taste is all relative bc when I hear her, I hear someone who uses their vocal chords as an instrument and is a true artist. I love her voice and her talent.

      • Miss M says:

@ANS: it truly is… I for one find her artistry very unauthentic. She has potential, but tries to sound like anybody else but herself.
To me, It sounds like she is trying to sound like Sia now.

I’m with you. I hate Miley’s voice. It grates

  4. Bubble bee says:

I don’t like Miley’s version. She sounds like she’s shouting and struggling to hit the notes.

    • gf says:

OMG this. She is always shouting into the microphone. That is NOT singing. While her tone is beautiful (the hoarseness and sort of folky sound), she does not know how to sing. She just talks at a high pitch and yells into the microphone. It makes me cringe.

Miley has a beautiful, interesting alto voice, and when she keeps it low, I love it. I think there’s a lot of pressure for altos to sing in soprano ranges, maybe because a higher pitched voice is associated with femininity, or maybe because singers often mistakenly believe that skill is measured by how high you can go. Miley sounds great in her natural range. I loved her cover of Lana Del Rey’s Summertime. If you haven’t seen that, it’s on YouTube. This… not so much.

  6. mtam says:

I loved it, i think Miley did a really good job and was a nice contrast to the way Ariana sings it. It would be fun seeing them sing it together.

  7. abbi says:

I’ve never heard her sing before so I clicked on this. Ok, next.

  8. Xanon says:

I always thought she was one of those teenage idols who can’t sing (like Taylor Swift) but her version of Jolene is impressive.

I totally agree. I was never too impressed with Miley until I saw this. Wow!

    • Devon says:

      Awesome version.

    • Lady D says:

That was incredible. Didn’t know she had it in her.

    • BeanieBean says:

She did a nice job on that. She just needs the right song.

    • lucy2 says:

I did like her version of that.

I personally don’t like her voice in general though, to me it sounds like she’s trying to imitate Stevie Nicks now. I’m not opposed to a little rasp, some of my favorite singers have that, but there’s something about her tone that doesn’t work for me. I will give her credit for actually singing though, and not just being an auto-tuned “pop star”.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I think this song fits her voice the best. Others, not so much.

    • CharlieBouquet says:

Wow, so impressive, isn’t Dolly her godmother? What a great tribute

  9. Penny says:

Miley is an incredible singer, I don’t understand the negative comments on here…

    • mtam says:

Me either Penny. I quite like her deep voice, and she brings a lot of emotion. I don’t really hear the nasal-ness other people do, but I do agree sometimes it does sound like she is shouting in order to reach the higher notes, but then she does hit the notes so w.e…. I bet that’s how she’s been trained to do it in order to fit her range and voice, it’s probably healthier for her to do it this way than to try and do it quieter in a higher range. I find it’s creative the way she’s been able to figure out what works for her and I think she’s getting better.

    • Usedtobe says:

      Agreed.
      People hear different things though.
Example, I find that Carrie Underwood screeches and sings through her nose.
I have many friends who think Lady Gaga can’t sing.
I think Miley has an incredible voice and have often wished she just sung for her, instead of what is popular or going to be a hit.

Eliza Dushku came out with some more information about the sexual harassment she experienced and my gosh it is disgusting. That men feel they can behave this way AT ALL, let alone at work is completely disheartening and revolting.

    Miley is a good singer.
