Before December 26th, 2018, Donald Trump had never traveled to a warzone or an overseas military base. He is the first president to refuse to visit the troops for nearly two years. He didn’t spend last Christmas or this Christmas with the military. People noticed. Articles were written about how Trump is a stupid chickenhawk who only wants to hang out with Deplorables at his sad little Nazi rallies. So instead of digging in his heels, Trump actually got off his lard ass and traveled to Iraq on Wednesday, the day after Christmas.
Now that the trip has been made, I wonder what took him so long – military personnel are ALWAYS going to be a good crowd for any president. I have no idea how many of these soldiers voted for Trump – probably half, maybe more? – but all of them were happy to see him, and he got to pretend to be at one of his little Nazi rallies and act like they were all there to edify and glorify him personally. Melania was there too – the cameras caught her several times looking like she could straight up murder someone.
Hilariously, Trump’s first overseas visit to the troops came on the same day that the New York Times published an investigative piece on how Trump dodged the Vietnam War draft. According to the NYT, a podiatrist who rented office space from Trump’s father, Fred Trump, was the doctor who “diagnosed” Donald Trump with “bone spurs.” As in, Fred Trump was a well-connected man and he asked one of his tenants to give his son a shady medical diagnosis to avoid the draft. The podiatrist’s daughters claim that their dad did it as a favor to Fred Trump. Draft-dodging Bigly Bonespurs.

His main weapon was a machete. The chainsaw comes from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The reason people confuse the two is that all the spoofs of TCM use a hockey mask, and that’s because Leatherface wore a mask made from the face of one of his victims, which for obvious reasons can’t be done in a PG/PG-13 environment.

He also managed to intimate that it was Melania’s fault for the delay in him going to Iraq – because you know, he was just so concerned over her safety. Basically signalling that he doesn’t even trust his own security detail nor the military to keep him safe even though all of the previous presidents managed to make these trips without incident.

Thank you for that link. Long read but worth it. How in God’s name can anyone who calls themselves a patriotic American worship a man like Trump while insulting and dismissing someone like Mueller. The shaming began at Veterans Day when he totally screwed up the events in France, then did nothing to honor our veterans when he returned and then did nothing at Thanksgiving. Other presidents & Vice Presidents had visited our troops at Thanksgiving. He didn’t even acknowledge them except to make insulting comments about the ones he sent to guard us against dying 8 year olds at the border.
It violates US military rules to use personnel in campaigns while actively serving. A lot of upper command figures have voiced disdain over his flagrant disregard for protocol and the soldiers who engaged that should have known better.
He finally visited the troops then promptly compromised safety by posting photos/video on Twitter of covertt ops teams. NY Mag has an article but I’ve been careful to not circulate the photos.

By his 2nd year in office, Obama had made 3 visits to troops in war zones. He visited Iraq less than 3 months after he was sworn in, and visited Afghanistan twice in his second year.
Is it customary for First Ladies to accompany their husband on trips like these? I can’t ever recall either Michelle Obama or Laura Bush doing it but maybe I just wasn’t paying close attention. It was my assumption bringing a spouse would be frowned upon since the soldiers deployed to an active combat zone wouldn’t be able to have their families with them.

The worst thing about his visit was the press. Once again they fell for his con. The Dotard only went to Iraq because he was doing damage control. He had days of bad press, mainly due to his own actions, and then he uses the troops to distract. It worked. The only people who called the visit out as a publicity stunt were Joy Reid and her guests. The press has one job to do, just one job, and they just keep failing. Every time they brag about the stock market hitting an all time high, we are hit with days and weeks of the stock market doing poorly. Which should be a signal to the press that these highs are probably not real. There is no way the stock market would have had highs with many people not getting their last paycheck of the year.
