Why was the color of Nancy Pelosi’s dress noted in the New York Times’ headline?

On Thursday, the 116th Congressional body was sworn into office. Nancy Pelosi’s speakership was fait accompli, but it was still moving and important to see her get the votes for Speaker and see her take the speaker’s gavel once again. Here’s Speaker Pelosi’s speech:

There was a lot to discuss – the second person in the government’s line of succession is back to a Democratic woman. Pelosi is a master negotiator and deal-maker. She will oversee the most racially and ethnically diverse House in history. There’s a historic number of women in the House. All of those sentences would have made a great headline. Instead, the New York Times chose this as their initial headline:

First of all, to the old fart white dudes at the New York Times: Pelosi’s dress was NOT hot pink. It was a warm coral, if anything. Second of all, they absolutely knew that they were doing something stupid. They’re grown-ups. They’ve covered male and female politicians long enough to know when they’re playing into journalistic, political and sexist double-standards. Thirdly, I actually have no problem with noting, within the article, something about Pelosi’s outfit, because as we’ve seen before, Pelosi knows how to make fashion statements. Her choice of a warm pink dress was important because of the Women’s March and because of the historic number of women in the House. Pink is for the Resistance. But just talk about it in the fifth paragraph. That’s not the lede or the headline. The NYT did delete that tweet after the backlash grew:

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is so dumb, obvious and child-like that he decided that he should waltz into the White House briefing room just a short time after Pelosi’s speech. Poor sucky baby wanted attention! He absolutely hates it when someone else is getting attention for anything! Poor jealous orange baby. The point of Trump’s stunt queenery was something about the wall, and he gathered up all of the bald border agents he could find.

And here’s the chaser to all of that sexist dumbf–kery:

Nancy P, in clothes, walks in the door.

    • Amelie says:

Hahaha that is literally what they could have written instead of “hot pink dress.” Men are just jealous they can’t make overt fashion statements with their boring black or navy suits. Nothing is stopping them from walking in the door in a fun/crazy color. Politics would be way more interesting if they did.

    • Yup, Me says:

Nancy P wears shoes and holds hammer. Something something Hot Pink!

    • Meowuirose says:

NP is not to be trusted. She takes money from corporate donors, doesnt support Medicare for all, doesnt support justice Democrats and consistently caves to the whims of the right. Just because she supported Obamacare years ago doesn’t make what shes doing now ok. She is a shady hack who is doing a huge disservice to the democratic party. She is a neoliberal, corporate Democrat.

    • Marianne says:

When Chuck Schumer takes up a new position in a hot pink or warm coral outfit, I bet they will mention it.

I see it as perfectly fine that they are mentioning her bright outfit. She wore a bright outfit on purpose and they noticed it. The message to me is that, look, she can wear something pink (or coral) and still be a leader. That is the opposite of sexism in my book. Appropriate for her to wear and them to mention.

    • Pft says:

If only color choice made a difference. Glad it’s a woman BUT she herslef said ” the only way to know how the Affordable Care Act works is by letting it go through” after all of congress had OPTED OUT of it like rats jumping ship. I’m sorry but her words and actions scare me more than the color of her shirt. Wow…i want women in power who analyze things and read new reforms BEFORE passing them to the American people. She really disappointed me then. What ever happened to informed decisions???

  2. Ktae says:

    Go Nancy go

  3. Nan says:

Poorly framed? It was blatant sexist garbage intended to demean and obfuscate this woman and her success.

  4. Lucy2 says:

Well, their Daily podcast this morning made note of what AOC was wearing, so they didn’t learn their lesson.
We still have so far to go.

    • Ripley says:

To be fair, AOC herself made a point to say she was wearing white in honor of suffragettes and women who came before her.

      • lucy2 says:

That’s cool, but they didn’t even mention that, just that she’d worn a “sharp white suit” or something.

  5. Mia4s says:

    Why was it noted?

Because the vast majority of the mainstream media is grossly sexist if not outright misogynistic.

Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

(And long live High Preistess Nancy)

  6. Lightpurple says:

Congratulations, Nancy. Let the butt-kicking and long overdue constitutional oversight begin.

For all the wonderful things that came out of yesterday, the star of the show, by far, was Pelosi’s granddaughter Bella, who was so excited when her grandmother was elected Speaker. She is our future.

    • B n A fan says:

Congratulations is in order to Speaker Pelosi. It’s good to see a mature woman taking charge, and will be kicking Don the Con’s butt, it’s about time he’s held accountable for him taking us for granted.

Btw, some women are the worse when it comes to criticizing other women, eg. hair, age, wrinkles, and dress, ect. I’ve read other women being very critical of Nancy, IMO, most of the time it’s jealousy, not just the media.

      • Aoife says:

Right, as likely that a woman rather than “old fart white dudes” (zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz) commenting on her dress.

      • Angela82 says:

My mom’s friend from high school who is now in her 60s hates both Nancy and Hillary bc she says they’re “old b*tches”. She should just admit she hates strong assertive successful women bc her life didn’t turn out the way she wanted. Worshiping men has got her nowhere, but heaven forbid she changes her mentality. This is a woman who went from Bernie to Trump.

      • minx says:

Angela82–Does this woman hate all “old b*tches” or just Pelosi and Clinton?

    • jwoolman says:

The excited granddaughter was a treat to watch.

Instead of trying to name the color of Pelosi’s clothes, they might have focused on the natural way she brought a whole bunch of children (not just her own grandchildren) up to the podium for the event. Very symbolic. Back when she was Speaker for the first time, she brought her grandchildren up during her swearing in also and not as a quiet line either.

Nancy Pelosi isn’t afraid to express her nurturing side while being tough as nails as required. In other words, she’s a woman who feels no need to become culturally like men in order to exert power. That’s an important role model for both boys and girls, men and women. And I imagine it scares the hell out of Trump.

  7. Beth says:

Who cares what color it is? I wear hot pink, and my bf wears pink. Is there something wrong with pink? Her dress looked like it was bright /hot salmon pink. Nancy rocks, and there’s more that they could’ve tweeted about other that the color of her dress

  8. AnnaKist says:

‘’mr rump was resplendent in a navy-blue polyester suit from Big’n’Hefty’s new, budget-friendly Spring19 WhiteSupe collection. He teamed this with a crisp, white, viscose shirt from his daughter’s own Komp-Licit vintage range, and a long, red tie from Walmart’s exclusive Fashiist boutique. He completed his ensemble with a jauntily-placed MAGA cap atop his apparently freshly-frosted , prompting some critics to suggest mrs rump employed the services of the cleaning lady and her bleach bottle tp achieve such platinum perfection. mr rump appears to have gained some poundage from his holiday feasting of Christmas cheesebugers and double-scoops, although an unkind CNN journalist posited that it was simply mr rump’s Depends that made his posterior appear so hugely rounded.’’

  9. Dee says:

    Infuriating!!!!

  10. Desolee says:

I’d say cool coral since it’s more pink than orange

  11. Rapunzel says:

They did this to Hillary and her pantsuits too. Screw ’em.

  12. Rapunzel says:

Re: trump and his press conf., it was disturbing to see him blatantly attempt to steal Pelosi’s thunder. He answered no questions. Also, those border patrol guys look like extras from American History X. Has anyone checked for links between border patrol and white supremacist groups?

    • Darla says:

I thought so too. It made me so sick to my stomach.

    • boredblond says:

I was thinking he’s surrounding himself with baldies so no one will have better hair than he does..my god, he’s so pathetically needy.

      • Kitten says:

Oh my god, that’s probably it. My first thought was “skinheads (the bad kind)” but maybe it WAS all about his dumb wig. Maybe it’s both honestly. God he sucks.

    • Veronica S. says:

There have already been well known ties found between the two, not to mention strongly suspect alt-right language on the DHS website. Really, who else would be drawn to that profession in this climate, anyway?

    • Tiffany :) says:

My bf said the bald heads reminded him of Pink Floyd’s The Wall (the rally scene). It’s really kind of creepy!

When I saw the images from that press conference, I couldn’t believe how obvious he was being. It was a desperate attempt to steal attention.

  13. Marjorie says:

Jeez, why are they all still so afraid of a powerful woman?

You know what’s important, NYTimes? The Speaker immediately started votes on funding legislation that the Senate already passed that doesn’t include any “walls.” She’s calling them on their BS right away.

Yesterday was a good day for the USA, at last.

  14. adastraperaspera says:

Nancy brushes sexism aside like a boss. It’s a new day! So happy for her and for us!

  15. Jess says:

Sigh…the misygonistic coverage is back. There was a female NYT reporter who tweeted yesterday about Speaker Pelosi (yay!) “scurrying” to her office. When everyone pointed out what an odd and derogatory word choice that was she doubled down-insisting there was nothing wrong with it. And then there’s the Politico article already wondering if Warren is likeable enough. Meanwhile, we have an unhinged lunatic in the White House and the media still won’t call him a liar.

    • Kitten says:

Yup. The Boston Herald (vomit) had an infuriating article about how “inauthentic” Warren was when she posted a video of herself drinking a beer. Meanwhile, the idiot journalists at this sad publication fawned and drooled over Charlie Baker drinking a Guinness at a South Boston campaign stop in 2014. Charlie Baker: Man of The People. (LOL)

My New Years resolution is to avoid toxic Left social media and journalism where everybody is a pundit who thinks they know which 2020 Dem candidate has what it takes to win. The recent Warren thread on C/B was a GREAT example of that. Stop dogging Dem candidates and start talking about the ones you like and why you like them. Honestly, it just boggles my mind that Dem voters don’t see how much they perpetuate RW narratives with their criticisms. It’s sad to watch and another reason why I will always be an Independent.

      • Lightpurple says:

The Globe used to do political happy hours at Suffolk Law School (I think the reporter who did them left), which featured a reporter asking questions of a local politician and then the politician would mingle with the audience. Beer and wine, cheese & crackers were available. When Warren did it, she brought her beer on stage with her. She likes beer. The Herald seemed to have no problem when Republican Governor Bill Weld would show up so drunk at events that he would keel over, as he once did at a graduation in the middle of his speech.

      • Tiffany :) says:

“Stop dogging Dem candidates and start talking about the ones you like and why you like them.”

Such an incredibly important point. Thanks for the reminder! It’s easy to get swept up in the heat of things.

      • Kitten says:

@ LP-Haha I love your story about Warren bringing her beer with her. Gal after my own heart..just wish she’d chosen something better than Mich Ultra, but hey I’ll try not to judge 😉

In addition to the obvious gender-based double standards, I think the public reaction to Weld or Baker’s boozing just emphasizes how misunderstood Warren is. I have said this a million times but I think peoples’ view of her as being cold, insincere (WHAT?!?), uncharismatic or lacking in charm (I seriously cannot believe we’re doing this again only two years after seeing HRC characterized in much the same way) is really just people repeating what the Right says. I’ve seen her fight like crazy in the senate and I’ve heard her in countless interviews. In my humble opinion, she is shrewd, smart, passionate and funny.

@Tiffany-Yes we ALL (including myself) need to be reminded to not be our own worst enemy. I understand the compulsion to jump to the #Never____ hashtag and write candidates off for a variety of reasons–I truly do–but we need to present a unified front in the face of RW attack.

DON’T help to reinforce their negative angle by participating in the castigation of ANY candidate that runs on the Dem ticket.

DO spend time elevating the candidates you like.

Let’s keep it positive and try to be productive and strategic about how we approach what will surely be a flooded pool of candidates come election time.

      • jwoolman says:

Didn’t they also complain about Hillary eating tacos or something similar? You would think politicians are supposed to do water fasts for their entire term.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I read this yesterday and the satire cut like a knife!

“I Don’t Hate Women Candidates — I Just Hated Hillary and Coincidentally I’m Starting to Hate Elizabeth Warren”

      • Kitten says:

That is AMAZING. I know the person who wrote this..not the author obviously but the voice. I know That Guy–several of them, in fact.

Thanks for sharing, Tiff. I will definitely be passing this one around.

    • noway says:

It’s not just the media. It’s a large portion of society. It is so institutionalized I believe a lot of people don’t see it. I think it is time we admit it fully Hillary Clinton lost because she’s a woman. Sure there were other things about her campaign which made her lose votes, but she lost by so little I do believe it could be attributed purely to the fact she was a woman. Look at all the crap Trump overcame. If Trump was a woman who did similar things would he have won. Don’t think so. Similar to racism we are are going to need an extraordinary public figure to break the mold, similar to Pres. Obama, in order to have a female president. I mean I’m not sure I would vote for Elizabeth Warren, but the likability factor was never really a question about any male candidate. Yet with Warren it is all out there early. Honestly, if you just listen to Trump please tell me how you hear likability in any of his comments. He seems like a sh(% That isn’t even going with how unqualified he is. Then we do the clothes and how they look thing. It’s just sad.

      • Kitten says:

Agreed. I do think that you are likely (and sadly) right about a woman having to be a perfect candidate in order to win. I still don’t think that’s a reason to not try, though—and I know you weren’t saying that.

        You made great points though.

      • lucy2 says:

Well, technically…(I know, I sound like one of THOSE guys) she did get 3 million more votes than he did, and if we didn’t have a ridiculous and antiquated electoral college system still, she’d rightfully be POTUS.

But I absolutely agree with your post, and I HATE that the likability stuff is even a factor, and starting so soon. WTF cares if someone is likable, are they smart and capable enough to do a good job, and does their vision for the future align more with my own than the other candidate? Done.

  16. Natalia says:

So glad I don’t have to read about Paul Ryan Munster as much anymore. Or see his face sitting behind the nwo puppet. Saw a headline yesterday, have to read the article, that Hahrump hasn’t gone after Nancy – yet. I’ll bet he’s afraid of her to the point where if he cattle prods her she’ll spill impeachable beans about what she knows.

If we could just get sociopath McConnell out as well. I’m worried about a Pence incumbency too.

  17. Kateeee says:

God that Trump presser was like a Robert Palmer video gone horribly wrong. I suspect their baldness was selected to amplify Trump’s obvious youth, virility and blegggggh 🤮🤮🤮 sorry, couldn’t finish.

  18. Eric says:

Emperor Zero and his crew of Baldies looked like a feather duster mixed in with a carton of eggs.

There’s much to be thankful for this new year. No more Trey Gowdy! And Devin Nunes gets to watch Adam Schiff kick ass as leader of the intelligence committee!

    Boom!
    💥💥💥🔪🔪🔪💥💥💥

  19. Veronica S. says:

Watching her play McConnell and Trump yesterday over the budget was a delight, particularly since they’re trying to pin the blame on Democrats for the shutdown (lol). Nancy ain’t bunting at bat, that’s for sure.

Did you see Cruz and friends try to pass legislation to add term limits? Be more transparent, guys.

  20. Fluffy Princess says:

NYTimes — I am so sick and tired of this type of shizz. What Nancy wore. Warren isn’t likable. But the troglodytes that they have? They tried to get a pedophile elected to the senate, confirmed a confirmed black out drunk rapist, a serial sexual abuser in the White House, a known racist as Attorney General — but but but, Nancy wore pink! Warren isn’t likable! AOC danced to a video at Uni! Successful women are the cause for all of societies ills!!! (Tucker Carlson).

WHAT YEAR IS THISSSSSSSS???????? Ef them and the horse and carriage they rode to Washington in. . .

  21. Tania says:

Man I can’t spend as much time on the internet as before at work since I’m training my replacement.

Yesterday was amazing. When I got home from work I watched CSPAN’s coverage of seeing Davids and Halaand. I watched that hug between two strong Indigenous women get emotional and support each other and it gave me life. I’m so proud of Sharice and Deb Haaland and seeing Deb and her mother in their traditional attire and getting sworn in.

This country has not been kind to its first inhabitants. To know they are representing everyone brings me hope. They are strong. They come from proud Indigenous Peoples. They are tough. They are all of us. I can’t wait to see them perform and I’m proud of my first home state of Kansas sending Sharice in for Yoder.

If you get a chance, look at their coat of arms and the drummers and all the pride.

    • The Other Katherine says:

SO AMAZING. That video of Davids and Haaland hugging brought a tear (okay, a whole bunch) to my eye too. Never thought I would live to see that.

  22. ans says:

Probably a misguided attempt to capitalize on clicks given the social media frenzy over her amazing coat. Just a guess.
