Bethenny Frankel recently tweeted about a bad experience on an airline, which she did not name. As we heard a few weeks ago, Bethenny has a rare and potentially fatal allergy to fish. It’s so bad that she had to be hospitalized for two days after accidentally eating soup with fish in it. Well Bethenny was scheduled to fly commercial, so she called ahead several times to warn that she had a fish allergy. No one got the message to her flight staff and they were serving fish on the plane. Even if she still didn’t eat it, this can cause her to have a reaction in such a closed environment. The pilot maybe decided to turn the plane around as a result and it sounds like he was a total jerk about it. (Note that I got this story from People, which claimed that the plane turned around. However Bethenny words it like they started to do it but didn’t follow through after she protested.)

It’s hard to find and recap the follow up tweets, so here is People’s coverage:

Frankel then retweeted a recent story about a young boy from New York whose family claim he died after fish was cooked near him. How exactly the boy died currently remains under investigation.

Immediately after her tweets, fans began to offer their opinions on the situation, with some suggesting Frankel fly on private planes to avoid potentially fatal encounters with fish.

When someone asked if she had the ability to invest in a personal plane, Frankel added, “I ain’t got it like that. And I want to work less not more.”

After some fans debated the severity of serving fish on an enclosed aircraft — “I didn’t know that could be an airborne allergy!” wrote someone — Frankel offered her own perspective and knowledge on the situation.

“To clarify: some allergens are transmitted by touch & air. Fish is one & is fatal. The more exposure to them, the more susceptible,” she wrote. “It’s not like an immunity thing where more exposure means less susceptible. It’s opposite. I’ve always kept it quiet but that’s over now.”

She also explained to her followers that “Being trapped in a cabin w no windows w cooking fish is a death trap,” and argued that “The airlines and world needs to change. I was always self conscious about it & today didn’t help.”

[From People]

I wish Bethenny would have outed the airline. Ten bucks says it was Delta! Delta is the f’ing worst I hate them so much. I’ve had so many bad experiences with them, but most airlines suck, especially the big ones. Airlines really need to improve their processes and communication with staff and passengers.

There’s another tweet with recommendations from the Food Allergy Awareness Network about traveling with allergies. I can’t imagine how nerve wracking that must be, to realize that you can’t control your environment and could suffer a life-threatening reaction at any time.

I’ve heard that Bethenny’s Hermes bags are dupes. I wish she would tell us where she gets them.

First time commenter. The dupes are probably Teddy Blake Caty bags. Look just like the Hermes ones.

    • Celebitchy says:

Their site! They have Chloe dupes too. This is still out of my price range but maybe…

      • vbp says:

ainifeel on amazon has similar bags – I’ve ordered their garden party in black – dupe and it’s solid quality.

Also I love love love love your site, I don’t start my day until I’ve read you. You draw a nice balance between not ignoring what’s happening in the world and still are able to be frivolous. It’s necessary in a time like this 🙂

Look on sites like Tradesy, Fashionphile – they have “preloved” bags at a great price. I’ve gotten a few. I know – they’re used. But they’re a fraction of the cost. These sites authenticate.

She looks so much older and thinner in the face without makeup. Like yikes skinny. I hope that is her body type.

    • kellybean says:

She is a prime example of how being too thin as you get older is not kind to your face. I’ve been underweight( not a humble brag, attributed to eating disorder) for years and I feel it makes my face look older than my 33 years. Her generally nasty attitude and cutting remarks she seems to find witty are what actually makes me find her unattractive. She’s just not a kind or compassionate person. Although, I will give her credit for the charitable work and money she gave to Puerto Rico.

      • Spicecake38 says:

This so much, she just has a super smug attitude.I am glad she is alright, but a little of her goes a long way.
I’m sorry you have the struggles you mentioned I’m sure you’re doing the best you can,be good to yourself ❤️

    • dlc says:

I do not believe her that she’s not wearing makeup. For sure she has lipstick on, maybe eyeshadow too? Foundations harder to tell, good be good skin or a filter.

  3. Scal says:

Allergy aside, who serves what is essentially microwaved fish on a airplane? Jeebus the smell alone….

  4. BengalCat😻 says:

Slightly OT but I wish people wouldn’t wear perfume or scented lotions on planes or other enclosed spaces. I’m very sensitive to those things and it makes travel extra unpleasant.

    • Celebitchy says:

I’m with you there BC. Last night at dinner I discreetly asked to be moved after the lady seated next to us had so much perfume on. I’m chemically sensitive and fragrance can be hard to take.

    • Chaine says:

Me too. It’s the worst. I fell like just about every time I fly there will be some perfumed lady next to me that spends the whole flight repeatedly applying scented lotion to her hands. I don’t know how to politely ask a stranger not to do that and with my luck they would end up being someone with a big Twitter following that would send an outraged tweet about me interfering with their moisturizing routine.

    • jwoolman says:

It’s not off topic. I have the same problem and in a plane or bus you’re completely trapped. Now it’s the perfume everything contains (even residues from soap, shampoo, and laundry detergents and dryer sheets, makeup, in addition to what both men and women deliberately drench themselves in). At least they stopped smoking on planes and in grocery stores….

I often fantasized about wearing some kind of space helmet feeding me clean air all the time…. Maybe that’s actually a direction to go, providing some kind of gear with uncontaminated air feed for passengers with sensitivities to all the fragrances that are unavoidable and also people with life-threatening allergies that can be transmitted through the air (such as seafood and peanuts). Their clothing would still be contaminated (you do know that your fragrances get into cloth and paper, yes? I have to keep paper money in a charcoal-containing bag), but that might be solved with a covering that can be discarded.

This is becoming a more widespread problem, according to a nurse. She said they are running into more and more patients with problems with fragrances especially. Not surprising since the exposure is huge and constant. I noticed the RNs at the hospital were fragrance free, but not necessarily so for the aides. Also the non-medical staff were saturated. I felt sicker the longer I stayed around them….

I despise this woman. I will never understand how she has fans. She is, quite literally, a deplorable.

  6. abbi says:

Eh, I dunno. She sounds entitled and spoiled.

    • Nan says:

It is not entitled or spoiled, it is life or death. She went out of her way to communicate with this airline who *absolutely can comply * with requests for allergy-free menus and failed to do so. She was then publicly humiliated for her allergy by airline staff.

    • Carrie says:

Mast cells. It’s biology and stem cells. She can’t help it. Please read up on stem cells, inflammation and allergies. It’s a biological storm. PubMed is free resource if that helps.

  7. amilou says:

I might be the only one living under a rock, but….

Did you see the story about the little boy who died after he entered his grandmother’s home while she was cooking fish? So incredibly sad. These allergies don’t mess around. She doesn’t sound entitled or spoiled at all.

I love her bikini and coverup

  9. JanetDR says:

The last time we flew (Thanksgiving week) I was so surprised that they were serving peanuts as a snack option! If it’s something people have a dangerous reaction too -why would you serve it on a plane?! It was Delta by the way .

I hate flying into Boston Logan (something I used to have to do at least monthly) and would have to premedicate with benadryl & prednisone because of Legal seafoods in the terminal

  10. Christ on a bike, NOBODY should be eating airplane fish.
