Angelina Jolie hosted a reception for Alfonso Cuaron & ‘Roma’ in West Hollywood

Angelina Jolie has known Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron for years. I think they first got to know each other when Cuaron – and the studio – repeatedly approached Angelina to play the lead in Gravity, with Cuaron directing. Angelina reportedly didn’t care for the script, even though the studio was ready to give her the biggest payday of her career if she signed on. She did not, and Sandra Bullock ended up in the role, but there were no hard feelings between Cuaron and Jolie, probably because Gravity was a huge success without her. As a testament to how Cuaron and Jolie are still friendly, she hosted an Oscar-campaign-type event for her friend’s film, Roma. Roma is getting a lot of Oscar heat, and many believe it’s a shoo-in for the Best Foreign Film Oscar.

Angelina Jolie hosted an intimate reception for “Roma” director Alfonso Cuarón at a hyper-exclusive new West Hollywood members club. The actress, who rarely hosts events, honored Cuarón on Saturday at San Vicente Bungalows following a screening of his movie.

She was overheard praising the “Roma” cast and posing for pictures with actresses Yalitza Aparicio and Marina de Tavira. The super private property has a strict no photos and no social media policy, and all guests have to sign a code of conduct and consent for blackout stickers to be put over the camera lens on their phones. One guest said, “Even Angelina had to sign and put a sticker on her phone. She seemed quite amused as it was done.” Other guests dining there Saturday included Meryl Streep.

It feels like Angelina just enjoys foreign films and of course she’d like the subject matter and story of Roma, plus she has a friendship with Cuaron. The weirdest thing to me is the idea that Angelina is a member of a hyper-exclusive new private club in West Hollywood. But of course, people are trying to make it sound like maybe Angelina is quietly romancing Alfonso Cuaron. Honestly… I could see that, and I think it would be good for her too, an involvement with a director, someone who is known as a brilliant artist. Gossip Cop denied the gossip about Jolie and Cuaron, but even they noted that Cuaron “recently split with his girlfriend of four years, Sheherazade Goldsmith,” but “he is not dating Jolie. As far as Oscar-winning actress is concerned, Gossip Cop has been repeatedly assured by a Jolie confidante that ‘she’s not dating at all, and is focused on her children and career.’” Hm…

Stand by your beds. This is going to happen…

    • Blankscreen says:

It’s weird people immediately jump to that conclusion. I think she probably knows lots of directors and has a lot to talk to them about. Like Clint Eastwood for example. Imagine their political conversations, haha.

  2. Croatian says:

I ship them so much after seeing these photos. He seems like a perfect match.
But, I really don’t want to be a hypocrite, I’ve recently ended a long relationship and am really annoyed how people perceive every male friend as a potential new bf. So, Angie – get some if you want to, but no pressure from me 😀 (like you care, Angie)

  3. Mia4s says:

I…could kind of see it? He has three children from previous marriages. He lives in London though so that might hinder things. Or not. Huh. In any event, Roma is amazing.

My favourite bromance this awards season though is Cuarón and Barry Jenkins (with bonus Diego Luna!):

  4. Tiffany says:

You know, I kinda like Alfonso with the longer hair. I thought he was hella sexy with it when he won is Oscar.

  5. Ader says:

Sheherazade Goldsmith is a dope name.

    • Amelie says:

Yeah I want to know more about her lol. Is she as interesting as her name?

      • BchyYogi says:

Ah, the internet. I looked up her photos and she is a similar “type” to Angie- physically. Men have a type, and he is -her- type as well. I think they will keep it on the down low, then it will disappear.

    • Maya says:

First name sounds like that sports drink.

Plus is she part of the Goldsmith family?

      • Nikki says:

My vague gossip recollection is that she was married to Zac Goldsmith, who took up with his sister in law, Alice Rothschild. I remember it because it was all sorts of degrees of messy. Also, her name is super cool!

  6. Toot says:

He’s attractive and they look nice together but I hope it’s true that they’re just friends because of him recently breaking up with his ex.

    Tired of stolen man narratives.

  7. Lizzie says:

i want him to direct her. his movies are so sensual and moving. IMHO – children of men is one of the greatest movies ever made.

  8. Adorable says:

The reason she didn’t take Gravity isn’t cause of the script but apparently because the schedule clashed when she was filming her directorial debut film..No matter what Tabloids say about Angelina, she is “Hollywood royalty”I think Hollywood wants her,but she’s selective if not reluctant about it so I find it surprising, that people are surprised She gets invited to stuff or people want to work with her,uh she’s Angelina Jolie🤷🏼‍♀️.

    • Maya says:

That’s why I laugh whenever some haters claim she is finished in Hollywood.

She is royalty and friends with some very powerful people. Plus she always supports her friends and projects she is passionate about.

She proved those tabloids wrong when she signed on 3-4 acting movies back to back.

PS: Cuaron really wanted Angelina for Gravity and fought hard for her but she couldn’t due to scheduling issues. He was forced by the studio to pick another actress as they wanted it done that year.

      • Sidewithkids says:

@Maya, I want her to do more acting. I’d like to see 6-8 films she’s doing. I don’t think Angie has even reached the depths of her acting and where that can take her yet. She’s an amazing talent and I would like to see her in more films. She needs to be Nicole Kidman. I swear, every year, it seems like Nicole is in two or three films. Of course, I want Angie to choose great films tho. (I like Nicole but some of her films now are duds).

    • Blankscreen says:

He wrote that role specifically for her. However, I don’t think the scheduling conflict was decisive to her taking the role and I think she could have switched things around. I think she was given advice not to take the role and I think that’s why she ended up firing her agent / manager / one of her top advisors because of it (it was widely reported that she did). The film was a huge hit and a surprise one at that.

Think Cuaron is the top out of The Three Amigos. Del Toro is a bit flakey sometimes (Hellboy and The Shape of Water) but visually outstanding. Inarritu is a bit pretentious sometimes. But all their films are a breath of fresh air.

    • Sidewithkids says:

@Adorable, EXACTLY. It’s her that doesn’t want all of Hollywood especially the catty, vain parts of it. I think it’s cool to be apart of at times but there is some seediness lurking there too.

Btw, love your name. Are you really adorable? Lol.

  9. jj says:

They would make an attractive couple.

  10. Cee says:

He’s gonna win Best Direction, Best Photography and Best Foreign Film.
The film is beautifully shot but dense. As an Argentine, I couldn’t really connect with the story beyond the superficial level (how women are often mistreated by the men in their lives, and discarded without a second thought) but missed the intricacies of what makes Roma such a special film for Cuarón (based on his own childhood) and the relationship between Mexican indigenous maids and their bosses.

    • AnnaS says:

Those first two, sure, but Best Foreign Film surely HAS TO go to Cold War?

    • Ericka says:

As a Colombian I felt transported to my childhood when I watched the movie. I loved it. The film was based on a Mexican family but it could have happened in any middle class neighborhood in Colombia.

  11. D says:

The denial means it’s true remember “I don’t want her (Aniston’s) husband”

    • Maya says:

Yeah right – you keep going with that one. Angelina has been linked with over 100 men the past two decades.

If she stands near one, works with one, just looks at one or even breathes the same air as one, she is hooking up with that man according to the tabloids.

      • paranormalgirl says:

She was down the street from my husband recently. I think she was trying to steal him from me… I mean, the proximity and all.

      • Maya says:

Really? Do tell, is he cheating on you with her since he was on the same street as her🤣

  12. CA Family Code says:

These pictures seem strange to me. It seems like she is part of the film, but she is not. Misleading.

    • Booie says:

Netflix asked her to host the event. She as the hostess is posing with the director and star. Not strange at all. And it was a private event so few pictures.

I hosted a kids birthday party recently and took a picture with the birthday boy. Not my birthday, but I was in the official birthday pictures. Misleading?

      • Zut alors says:

Thank you Booie! It’s only misleading if one is determined to make an issue of Angelina as the host taking pics with the director and cast. So petty.

  13. Oh-Dear says:

I feel like Sheherazade Goldsmith is everything Gwyneth wants to be, but she seems to have some sense of humility or down-to-earthness Gwyneth doesn’t have.

  14. Hmm says:

Not sure I get a coupley vibe with these two but would love to see her work with him. I wonder if she’ll be at the Oscars to present this year.

I do think it’s hilarious whenever I’m on a certain site and Brange/Pitt fans are quick to say Angelina will not date ever again. LoL oh please!

  15. Kebbie says:

He’s hot and insanely talented. They’d make a hot couple.

  16. Myrtle says:

AJ sure looks pretty in these photos. So glad to see her in something other than those crazy, voluminous lady dresses she tends to favor.

  17. DiegoInSF says:

I’m glad Angie is helping promote Roma. It’s a great movie! Hopefully it does win the Best Foreign Film Oscar!

  18. Ronaldinhio says:

Angie’s hair looks like the way mine did after chemo.
I often had my wig slightly too far back making my forehead larger – it is all I see here

    • Sidewithkids says:

@Ron, Chile, Please. Take Several Seats.

Anyway, I can’t believe Gravity was done in 2013. Doesn’t seem that long ago. This man bout to win two and/or three more Oscars. He’ll be up there w/ Inarritu. Foreign film is leading the way in Hollywood. That’s quite interesting.

I don’t know what to believe about this Gravity thing w/ Angie turning it down. I have to be honest tho, it wasn’t a great film story/plot wise. Plus, having George Clooney in it, messed it up even more for me. Robert Downey Jr. was suppose to do it but once Angie passed, so did Robert. Now visually and technically, Gravity’s a remarkable film. That’s why he won an Oscar for best editing b/c frame by frame the film is breathtaking. Same thing w/ Roma. Story isn’t really there but the look of the film is stunning.

Lol. It’s been always funny to me tho how on Oscar night, Angie is standing w/ Cuaron after she presents the award to him. You never see Sandra Bullock w/ him at all. Even when he goes back to take the press pics and questions, Angie’s there like she’s the film’s star smiling and giggling w/ him. It’s like they’re both saying this is who should’ve been in it. No Sandra Bullock. No second choice. (This is not a knock on Sandra, just saying the Angie and Cuaron like each other and prob do want to still work together which I hope happens soon).

      • CharmedP4 says:

It is customary to have the presenter with the winner backstage for some press photos. Angie and Alfonso also had an official photoshoot with his Oscar. I forgot the website that had them.

Regarding Gravity, I personally think Angie passed on the project after they scrapped the original storyline that centers to Ryan’s daughter, which was supposed to be her character’s main reason to not give up. Also I think the George Clooney role was not that prominent in the early drafts of the scrpt.
