‘Game of Thrones’ debuts new Stark-crypt trailer & the air date for the new season

Premiere of 'Game of Thrones' season 7 - Arrivals

I kept thinking that this summer will be devoted to Game of Thrones, that the final six episodes – which are reportedly like mini-movies – will be coming out in June or July. I was prepared for that. I was not prepared for this: last night, HBO released the a stand-alone trailer for the new season AND a release date. The final season will begin… April 14th. Adjust yo’ calendars!! April 14th is actually a pretty sweet spot in the calendar, when you think about it. The awards season is over, most people have done their taxes and April usually sucks in general. But now we’ll be so absorbed in Jon Snow Realness that we’ll be fully occupied for a month and a half. Here’s the new trailer:

I believe that this is a stand-alone thing for the trailer, and this is not footage from an actual episode. HBO has done that before, shot stand-alone stuff for a teaser or trailer, and it’s smart. It gives fans something new but maintains the secrecy around the new episodes. It’s evocative too – Jon Snow (Jon Targaryen) walking past his mother’s statute. Sansa walking past her mother’s statute. Arya pulling out her sword when the winter smoke comes down to the Winterfell crypt. G–damn this is going to be good/devastating/infuriating.

  1. Kit says:

Is this like the dragon rider Targaryens, two sisters and a brother? Except he is not really their brother.. and the sisters are not Targaryens… I am clearly overthinking this 🐲

  2. Barrett says:

I always forget he is so tiny!

  3. Evil Owl says:

Those ominous statues that make them gasp at 00:53 are giving me the shakes. Their likenesses are already in the crypt? That’s Needle that the Arya statue is holding, right? What does it all mean? Will we ever recover?

    • Mabs A'Mabbin says:

No. We won’t. I’ve been mourning the ending since last season.

    • Tom More says:

I think the statues just represent the possible deaths of all three characters. It’s not a real scene from the season.

      • GreenTurtle says:

You will notice that Jon’s statue looks like an aged version of him, whereas Sansa’s and Arya’s statues look like them at their current ages. Hmmm….

  4. Banana says:

That whole kit Harrington and alleged affair with prostitute went away reallllly quickly. Wonder why?

    • Ickythump says:

I noticed this too. Some celebs have that kinda story hanging over them forever but I feel like people have already forgotten about this. He doesn’t seem like a likeable guy at all.

    • ByTheSea says:

Great PR people. They buried it with the quickness.

    • Clare says:

I feel like he came out with a pretty solid denial – if the woman accusing him had anything more to sell, she would have. In this instance I feel like she played her hand, and he didn’t bite (and/or denied it publicly and privately paid her to go away).

Not even the best PR people can shut up someone selling a sex scandal without either 100% deniability or money (or both)

      • Jh says:

I haven’t forgotten. I really can’t look at him the same way. He denied it? It was pretty devestating evidence, if you ask me.

      • mom2two says:

I am sure she was paid off. He did deny it. Who ever his PR people are, he is getting his money’s worth for them.

      • YesImHere says:

He denied it through his PR hack. And it was stunning how self-confident and matter-of-fact that denial was in the face of seriously damning evidence. THAT is what pisses me off and forever altered the way I see him. The cocky arrogance: “Ignore what your eyes see and just believe what I tell you because FAMOUS.”

    • Jag says:

I thought it went away quickly, too. He had to have paid her off, since she allegedly had even more evidence than she showed. I’ll never get the image of him out of my mind, even though it was censored. Ugh.

  5. Lightpurple says:

A woman is annoyed with the lack of footage of a man in any of the promos so far.

  6. DP says:

    APRIL!!!!!!! Yaaaaaay!!!!!

  7. Jenns says:

I’m thinking we will see a trailer with the Super Bowl.

This footage makes me think about the white walkers invading Winterfell and the dead coming out of the crypts.

    • Jennifer says:

Yes this was my husband’s thought as well. When the whitewalkers come to winter fell all the dead Starks will rise from the crypts. He also thinks the whitewalker generals ARE Starks from long ago (or at least one of them).

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Isn’t the White King a Stark? That was revealed a few seasons ago.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Yes, I think the Night King is a Stark. Old Nan told a story about a long ago Stark who fell in love with a wildling girl and followed her north. I think he became the Night King.

      • YesImHere says:

I did not know this (about the White King being a Stark of old)!! I somehow missed that. Amazing. So glad I caught this comment. Really gins up the plot twist that is coming. OMG I can’t wait for this last season. LOVE this show.

    • PlayItAgain says:

Holy cow, I hadn’t thought of that! Yikes! Maybe that’s why Winterfell burns—maybe they torch it to stop it?

      • jessica says:

There is a Night King and a Night’s King. The Night King is the villain, probably the first white walker. The Night’s King is the commander of the Night’s Watch who fell in love with a wilding. He was possibly a Stark. We know about the Night’s King bc of Nan’s stories to Bran. But we don’t know if the Night’s King is real or mythological. Hope this helps.

  8. Lesanne says:

I just changed my flight to Italy so I don’t have to worry about missing any of GOT.

  9. Meghan says:

Look I don’t share my birthday with anyone and I’m not 1000% thrilled about sharing it with the GoT premiere, I must say!

  10. Lucy says:

    Well, now we wait.

  11. Michael says:

Been so long since the show was on, I can’t even remember what was happening on it

    • Incredulous says:

      Allow me:

Undead dragon melted part of the wall, army of the dead marching through. Tormund’s fate unknown.

Euron Greyjoy sold the goodies a pup and is on the way to Essos to bring back a giant merc crew with elephants and everything.

Jon Snuh is (unknowingly) half Targaryen, legitimate heir to the Iron Throne and enjoying lie-down kisses with his aunt, Dany.

Both Davos and Lyanna continue to rule.

Cersei continues to turn everything she touches to ashes and may end up becoming the Night Queen, after dying to Arya or Jaime.

Littlefinger enjoyed the attentions of no-one. Varys rules, Tyrion is Hand of the Queen and still technically married to Sansa.

Clegane Bowl will be a hell of a thing. Qyburn might try to become a White Walker or betray the living or something.

Sam and Tilly know about Jon Targaryen as they read it in a book. Dolorous Edd seems to be heading up the Night’s Watch. Brienne kills Jaime mebbe and Tormund comforts her, hopefully although she’ll probably swear fealty to someone else and then walk the earth, you know, like Caine in Kung Fu.

Oh and Bronn becomes a rich fat castle lord with babies and Pod continues to be First Sword of Westeros.

    • Nikki says:

Just means you need a GOT marathon to ready yourself!

  12. Tallia says:

Why does he always look like he forgot to put his contacts in and is sucking on a lemon?

  13. Mel says:

I just hope Arya will live and that Tourmond survived the wall fall and will be in at least a few more episodes, Everyone else is fair game. I did see people commenting on Jon Snow’s statue looking much older so people are thinking he will also survive, I’m not so sure about him. And I’m afraid of Hodor and summer and even maybe uncle Benjen returning as white walkers, I dont know if I could handle that.

    • Eleonor says:

Oh God not Hodor, it was too painful seeing him dying, I couldn’t stand him as a white walker…

      • Mel says:

Right? Except this is game of thrones and it feels like something they would do. Just to break us. Lol

    • BrickyardUte says:

I’m with you Mel. Araya and My Ginger Beard husband are all I can afford to care about. Please Lord of Light let them live.

  14. Canber says:

I kinda lost interest. Too long of a wait for just a few episodes.

    • Mel says:

I sort of did too, I mean, the wait is so ridiculously long that its way past the point of a “build up” you just become indifferent to it, but then I was watching HBO last night and saw this and I was like yesss!

  15. jay says:

Bran Stark is obviously The Ice King.

  16. YesImHere says:

Amazing how no one talks about his drunken night in a hotel with a Russian hooker anymore. That was prime, Grade-A celebrity gossip and yet it disappeared inside of 48 hours. Truly amazing, even for Hollywood.

    • Olenna says:

Yeah, that disappeared fast. I guess the tabs didn’t get enough clicks on the articles and only GOT fans were interested. What an a-hole, though.

  17. Anna says:

If this show wasn’t so violence I would love to watch this show. I watched a few episodes of season 1 on Amazon and I just had to keep looking away.
