Regina King in Michael Kors at the Critics Choice Awards: sparkling and incredible?

It definitely seems like Regina King’s year and like she’s a shoo-in for the Supporting Actress Oscar. She’s winning all the things, she’s looking amazing, and people are talking about the solid work she’s been turning in for decades. Regina won last night for If Beale Street Could Talk. She sparkled when she was on stage, so many women did. That may have been due to the lighting which seemed different than we’re used to, but there were also more women in these sparkly dresses. Regina had on a purple Michael Kors off the shoulder gown which fit her like a glove. Now that I’m looking at the detailing in the beading I’m even more impressed with it, there are row of beads perfectly lined up. I wonder how many man hours this took to make. This dress is amazing.

Viola Davis was also in Michael Kors, in a bronze one shoulder gown. She presented the See Her award to Claire Foy. See Her is an organization launched by “The Association of National Advertisers and its Alliance for Family Entertainment” with the aim to “eliminate bias against women from advertising and media.” This is the third annual award and Viola was the first recipient, with Gal Gadot winning last year. This cause, by this group, seems very much like Dove taking on body positivity. The Geena Davis Institute has been working on representation of woman and girls in media since 2004.

Laura Dern worked the hell out of a black sequin Saint Laurent with an asymmetric keyhole neckline. I wish she would have done something different with her hair, but my hair looks like this most days so I should appreciate her style more.

I’m including Nina Dobrev here because she was in a red Valentino that was very similar to Laura’s red Valentino at the Globes. I wish Laura would have worn the black number to The Globes but maybe this was all planned with the house of Valentino and their stylists so that two actresses didn’t show up in such similar dresses.

Regina looks FLAWLESS. What a queen! Violas dress actually looks badly fitted… it’s unflattering in the midsection (which is just the dress, Viola has worn form-fitting dresses well in the past!) Laura Dern’s dress is fabulous!

  2. Lennn says:

I don’t know..Regina looks fine, but a bit boring. It might be the light but Violas dress looks unflattering on her skin, also her boob…And Laura Derns boob…the boobs aren’t being presented as well as they could.

Definitely wanted to give Laura’s dress a big yank to the side. I think the top of her dress is awful.

But I like Regina’s dress, including the color. I would love to see what it would have looked like had she worn her hair in a softer style, maybe some curls.

  3. Lucy2 says:

    Regina’s dress is stunning.

Viola and Laura are both fantastic actresses but I don’t love their gowns here.

  4. WingKingdom says:

    King’s dress is utter perfection.

Dern’s dress looks… uncomfortable. I’d be tugging at it all night. I find the whole situation above her waist to be unflattering.

  5. Erinn says:

I like Viola’s dress more from the further away shot – I love the color. It’s such a perfect bronzed shade. But I also love Viola so I might be a bit biased.

Regina has some of the most gorgeous eyes I’ve ever seen. I love the purple on her as well.

Nina is just cute. I don’t really love the gown, but I think it works on her.

  6. Lightpurple says:

What a gorgeous color Regina is wearing. Flawless.

  7. SM says:

Regina looks flawless. Some jail time is in order to whoever convinced Laura to put that dress on without some proper fitting around her chest. Her breasts look like they are trying to escape in different directions.

  8. Sid says:

I remember watching Regina on 227 way back when I was kid. I am thrilled to see her still having such a great career all these years later.

  9. Jerusha says:

Regina King-best look of the night, with Michelle Yeoh a close second.

  10. Tallia says:

Regina King and Viola Davis look AMAZING. Slay!

Laura Dern, what is going on in the bodice area? It’s like a wonky eye. Why, Laura, why?

  11. BrickyardUte says:

Regina looks sensational. That color is divine on her.

  12. The Other Katherine says:

Regina is SO gorgeous. I would love to see her play Michelle Obama in a bio-pic one day.

  13. Nikki says:

Regina is stunning; it’s marvelous to see a strong, vibrant woman coming into her own! I didn’t like the fit of Laura’s or Viola’s, and didn’t find either dress attractive.

  14. Themummy says:

Holy crap, Regina is just perfection. She’s beautiful, so smart, an excellent actress, and on top of that her dress is amazing—it fits her like it was MADE for her and the color is awesome. Her skin is ridiculously gorgeous and her makeup here is perfect.

I also adore Viola, but I’m not feeling her look here. The dress had potential, but somehow doesn’t work? And her hairstyle looks…unbalanced somehow. That said, I don’t even care—she’s basically a Goddess. Both of these women are.

I love Nina’s dress. It’s not my usual style and it borders of doilie fussy, but it works. It would be an amazing centerpiece of an ethereal, dark, or even fairytale in the woods photo shoot.

  15. DesertReal says:

I think each and every one of these stunning ladies wore beautifully coloured dresses, that would’ve been perfect in a slightly different design.
