Rami Malek picked up the SAG Award for lead actor: is he the Oscar favorite?

SAG Awards 2019 Press Room

People say it all the time. I say it all the time: the guild awards are the best indicators for the Oscar races. But this year does feel different and weird. Green Book won the Producers Guild Award, and then… Black Panther won Best Ensemble at the SAGs. Rami Malek seems like the favorite for Best Actor now, and yet… I feel like he’s not a sure thing. Rami picked up a SAG Award last night for Bohemian Rhapsody, thus solidifying his “favorite” status. But I’d like to point out that Rami’s “I didn’t know nothing about Bryan Singer, Freddie Mercury’s ghost protects me!” statement came out right as Academy voters began to deliberate. Will Rami be punished?

Also solidifying his “Oscar favorite” status: Mahershala Ali, who won for Green Book last night. I’m fine with it, and I’m fine with ONLY Mahershala winning stuff from Green Book. He deserves something for putting up with all of this crap.

Here are some photos of the other dudes of the SAGs. Timothée Chalamet wore leather pants from Celine OMG.

I get that Chris Pine is a “dandy.” He loves clothes, and he loves to avoid the traditional boring suit. But this white Ermenegildo Zegna tuxedo is some Col. Sanders realness. Damn it, now I want fried chicken.

I really can’t see the fuss about Richard Madden. He looks 12 to me! ha ha

    • Josephine says:

He’s got wrinkles! He has strong features, the classic strong jaw, which I think is the appeal.

But that Henry Golding is truly a dish!!

    • NotHeidisGirl says:

Me neither…He reminds me of Justin Timberlake, thus – no, thanks.

Henry Golding though… a snack indeed!

    • Jerusha says:

He looks bland to me-like the male models in the vintage Sears catalogs.

    • AG-UK says:

me either and I didn’t think he was amazing in Bodyguard. I don’t know maybe expecting more he always seemed in pain or like he was constipated maybe that’s ACTING. Chris Pine in those velvety shoes no socks (:

      • eto says:

i wasn’t a big fan of Bodyguard either – he was either 100% expressionless in parts where it didn’t make sense or his forehead was all screwed up when he was trying to get across some feeling. killed an otherwise interesting story for me.

    • Jess says:

Ditto. I find Madden so boring. But Henry is yummy!

    • sommolierlady says:

      deleted. wrong post

  2. grabbyhands says:

I haven’t seen Green Book yet and probably won’t, but I’d love to see Mahershala Ali win. I’m watching him in the new season of True Detective and his performance is magnificent.

Chris Pine doesn’t look horrible exactly, but I can’t with the white pants. Especially when it is paired with loafers with no socks.

  3. Becks1 says:

Richard Madden looks so classy and pretty – such an old school Hollywood vibe. I feel like that was the vibe Chris Pine was going for but missed, ha.

  4. Mia4s says:

Disgusted that Malek won and the message it sends. Hoping for a Washington/Affleck situation and literally anyone else winning the Oscar.

Hey I was wondering if someone could point me to the backstage video where he’s asked about the fact that he won for accused child rapist Bryan Singer’s movie? You know just like how Greta Gerwig was asked about Woody Allen immediately after winning Best Screenplay at the Globes (even though he had nothing to do with her movie?). Could someone recap that for me?

Oh he wasn’t asked? Well….isn’t that interesting? 😒

    • xdanix says:

Could NOT agree with you more. It’s just AWFUL. His whole attitude to it has just been horrendous too. I didn’t think he was particularly great in the role, so I would have been down in the dumps to see him as a clear favourite anyway, but honestly I’ve gone from having no real feelings on him personally to feeling utterly disgusted by him in quite the short space of time.

Unfortunately, he IS the clear favourite to win now, and he’ll be basically there when he wins the BAFTA (which he is heavily predicted to do, given how beloved Freddie is there.) I’m praying that Bale can snatch it last- minute (I mean, I’d love it for BC, because I thought HE was the best performance out of all of them this year, but I think sadly his chances are finished for another year, sob) but I think Malek might just have it won. God.

(And WHY are the industry in such a rush to shower him with awards anyway? What happened to “he’s young, he can wait his turn” that so often happens in the Best Actor race?!)

      • Mia4s says:

“(And WHY are the industry in such a rush to shower him with awards anyway? What happened to “he’s young, he can wait his turn” that so often happens in the Best Actor race?!)”

I actually think there is a contingent that thinks this IS his only chance. He’s 37, which is young for an actor but far from the youngest awarded. But he’s (and I don’t just say this because I’m completely put off him by his conduct this awards season) kind of different looking? A bit odd looking to be honest. The ironic thing is that guarantees a shot at character work (and future nominations) going forward, but he’s not likely to become a traditional leading man off just an Oscar win no one will care about three weeks later. If he wants more he needs to sign up to one of the franchises.

They do this sometimes with guys in their 30s. How much it benefits them is questionable. Eddie Redmayne got two nominations and a win before he was 35 and all he has to show for it as a “star” is a mediocre franchise that no one really cares he’s in. Adrien Brody won at 29 and…yeah.

      • minx says:

Daniel Day Lewis also won at 31-32 for My Left Foot. I don’t think Malek is all that young. His is the type of showier performance that Oscar voters love…speaking with a British accent, singing, making himself resemble Mercury. And as I keep saying that Freddie is so beloved, people are predisposed to love the performance.

      • Diplomanatee says:

“(And WHY are the industry in such a rush to shower him with awards anyway? What happened to “he’s young, he can wait his turn” that so often happens in the Best Actor race?!)”

Mia4s and xdanix… we have a similar debate going on in Mexico with the attention being given to Yalitza. Save for a few assh0les, we feel very protective of her, and we can’t shake the sensation that the Academy is somehow using her image to appear more inclusive. Journalists have accused the Academy of the same thing. They’re a little to disingenuous, a little too “See??? Here’s Rami, here’s Yalitza, we’re SO inclusive now!! Forget about #oscarssowhite!!!”

    • Esmerelda says:

I’m thinking the Academy will reward the “ghost” defense for creativity, sadly.
And it’s disgusting he’s not being asked to clarify his opinions.

  5. cyna says:

Timothée in Celine yaasss!! This kid’s been killing it on the red carpet this season.

Chris Pine is turning into a wax figure.

Rami I-didn’t-know-about-Singer-when-everyone-and-their-dog-knew-for-years Malek’s face is creeping me out, looks like Gollum. Barf.

  6. Aims says:

I finally watched Bohemian Rhapsody last night. I was disappointed in the film, however I think Rami was amazing. He mimics Freddie perfectly. I also really loved the Green Book. It’s in my top three this years. The acting was amazing. I thought it was accurate setting the tone regarding the racism in the 60’s in the deep south. I highly recommend watching it.

  7. Millennial says:

I like Rami, but I think it’s Christian Bale’s “turn” to win the big one. He’s churned out good work for decades. And if Vice is a mediocre movie… well, so is Bohemian Rhapsody so that argument doesn’t do much for me.

    • Maya says:

      Yes it’s Bale’s turn..

    • minx says:

If Bale had won last night I would say yes, he’ll win the Oscar. But the SAGs are a pretty good barometer for Best Actor…I think the last 13/14 winners have also won the Oscar. I also think, the Singer mess notwithstanding, that most Oscar voters hate Dick Cheney and love Freddie Mercury, and that will carry the day for Rami Malek.

    • TheOtherSam says:

Rami’s recent stale pr statements the came out after the SAG voting closed will probably hurt his Oscar chances. Bale looks to be a shoe-in but: did anyone hear him loudly YELL out Gary Oldman’s name just as he was starting to open the envelope to announce the Best Actress winner last night? It was jarring and rude to say the least, and the faces of some of the nominees (nervously waiting for a name to be callled) showed irritation…Bale has been relaxed this awards season and perhaps has imbibed a bit at these shows – he’s said he doesn’t like the public side of acting – but he should have had some self control.

Not sure it will hurt him much, but true to form the DM did a whole post write up on it, prominently posting it this morning. Like I posted here last week, pr and publicists have been running negative campaigns this entire season since the races are tight. Nothing helps your client out like spotlighting the bad behaviors of their competition lol.

      • julie says:

Rami’s comments won’t hurt him in the slightest. Actors are starting to get testy when asked to explain and answer for the actions of others. Bale is FAR from a shoe-in: he couldn’t win at SAG with his highly-publicized 50lb weight gain and 10lbs of prosthetics plus the fact that he is much better known than Rami? Please. If he were going to win the Oscar he would have won at SAG. He’s done. Also, he needs to get his drinking under control.

      • minx says:

julie, agree. And while Bale is admired, I don’t think he is exactly beloved. Actors voted for their preference and it was Malek.

  8. Who ARE these people? says:

Chris Pine trying out for the Julio Iglesias biopic and Madden trying out for Bond.

  9. SallyS says:

That “I didn’t know nothing about Bryan Singer, Freddie Mercury’s ghost protects me!” thing is super gross and really offensive. Also Malek keeps using Freddie as a shield from Singer situation and it starts to sound as if poor Freddie lived and died with the sole purpose of Malek getting awards for playing him on screen.

  10. Jemimaleopard says:

Richard Madden. Would . Get. It. That’s all!

  11. Lizzie says:

rami malek’s pattern of speech is so odd. it is incredibly difficult to listen to him talk.

  12. Sheila says:

I loved Rami’s performance and yes, he is the clear favorite to win the BAFTA and the Oscar. Good for him! Bale already has an Oscar and they don’t seem to be in any kind of big rush to give him #2 for his crap movie that no one cares about.

    • paranormalgirl says:

I saw Vice and it really wasn’t very good. And Christian Bale was just… fine… in it. Willem Dafoe was amazing in “At Eternity’s Gate” and deserves the win, but he won’t get it.

  13. Digital Unicorn says:

Finally saw Bohemian Rhapsody and while I have issues with the movie (inaccurate, plot was terrible and all over the place, pace was also all over the place) Malik was good as Freddie and do i think its Oscar worthy, no its not.

  14. RBC says:

Well, even if the Singer scandal dies down a bit, the public and media will be reminded of it again with the upcoming Michael Jackson documentary opening at Sundance( said to be very upsetting) and also the legal problems of Kevin Spacey. His connection to Bryan Singer will be brought up again and again. If Rami is lying about knowing, it will come out

    • joeylyn says:

The Singer story has died down substantially. Unless he’s actually charged with a crime (doubtful) it will continue to lose traction. Kevin Spacey has worked with quite a number of people in his long career and his more recent employers were HBO, David Fincher and the Old Vic, where he held an extremely prestigious position. Why do you honestly believe that any of that blowback from that (or the Michael Jackson film which isn’t even in theaters yet) will be linked to or hit Rami Malek? It’s not only illogical, it’s fantasy. And unless you have some kind of smoking gun email showing that Malek knew about Singer’s sordidness previously, it simply doesn’t matter. He says he didn’t know, like Grand Dame Streep said that she didn’t know about Weinstein. The actors give each other passes on this. Cate Blanchett was not “cancelled” because she won an Oscar working for Woody Allen.

  15. Michael says:

I don’t know. It seems to me that whenever somebody gets made up to look like a historical figure in a film they automatically get an Oscar nod. Wasn’t there Oscar talk about Ashton Kuchar a few years back when they made him up to look like Steve Jobs? They pretty much gave the Oscar to Daniel Day-Lewis for Lincoln before the movie even came out. Capote, Ray, Milk, all Oscar winners and probably more. I love Queen, one of my favorite bands, but his role seems more imitation than acting. These Oscar people are so full of themselves, I don’t mind ranting against. them. Rant over

    • xdanix says:

Yep. There have been something like 4 or 5 Best Actor wins in just the last decade alone where the winner was playing a real person. It’s quite notable that Bradley Cooper is the ONLY actor nominated for Best Actor for an original character this year- every single person he’s up against is playing someone who was a real person. It’s already seen as the quickest way to an Oscar, and when Malek or Bale win next month that’ll only increase. Yawn.

  16. SarSte says:

Frankly, I’m really disappointed that the Oscar favourites in the Best Actor/Supporting Actor categories are two straight dudes portraying gay characters. Plus, the more awards Mahershala gets, the more people are going to go see that garbage film.

  17. Megs says:

Everyone I know loved BR but none of them knew anything about Singer. I did know and am so disgusted, and my friend mentioned “well, do we punish the whole cast and crew who didn’t do anything?” And while I understand where she is coming from, I disagree and say “damn straight we “punish” all associated with these predators. It’s the only way Hollywood will raise the bar and hire decent humans as directors. I’m so crabby now and it’s only 7:50am. F$ck.

  18. lobstah says:

    HENRY GOLDING. Brb….having heart palpitations…

  19. Thaisajs says:

Adam Driver looked pretty hot last night, too. In a very pained, “please, can I stop coming to these events since we all know I’m not going to win” kind of way.

  20. Margo Smith says:

I want to point out that I did pay to see Bohemian, but only because of Rami! He’s the only reason. I knew Singer was a predator, but I love Rami (Mr robot anyone?!). I’m pretty sure ramis pr team has told him what to say when people ask about his association with Singer. I’m sure he knew from the get go, but I also know that he saw the opportunity to play Mercury and chose to do it anyways. Ugh. Not great but we live and we learn.

Now about merhashala. He is the GOAT! Incredible human being and his performance is perfect. But holy shoot, viggo is nuts. Have you seen the Hollywood reporters roundtable with him?! His opinions are so out there, so deluded. He’s in his own little white dude bubble. Cant believe he’s been put out there to promote this thing. I wonder, has viggo always been like that? Or is he just a miserable old man now?

Regardless, I hope Rami and merhashala both win Oscars!

    • AG-UK says:

I watched the 1st Mr Robot which was good I stopped at that I tried season 2 but I don’t know what happened couldn’t be bothered. I love love Merhershala (sp) ever since House of Cards he has those smiley eyes.. he was perfect in Green Book. TBH since I live on this side of the pond now I have lost interest in all of it too late to watch I just read what I need to that morning.

    • Jerusha says:

Never cared for Viggo. Haven’t seen THR roundtable, but I loathed Captain Fantastic so much that my indifference to VM turned to loathing also.

    • Brie says:

Viggo is an idiot. It’s not exactly shocking that an old white man has stupid opinions. But it is interesting that Mahershala Ali apologized to Don Shirley’s family after they condemned the film due to its misrepresentation of Shirley’s life, yet continues to campaign for and accept awards for it.

    • xdanix says:

If Rami Malek’s PR people are really out there telling him to invoke the ghost of Freddie Mercury in interviews about Bryan Singer, I would suggest he fire them quick-smart!

  21. Lili says:

    I hope he wins!!! 🙌🙌

  22. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

    Pine gave me the lol’s.

  23. GreenQueen says:

CANCELED. Don’t care. You can have all the talent in the world but if you haven’t an ounce of character then you deserve nothing. So Rami Malek either believes that we are complete idiots whom will believe his blatant lies or he lives under a f*ing rock. First of all, everyone in Hollywood knows Rami’s sexual preferences and given that it is doubly impossible he didn’t know about Singer’s history with little boys.

    • Mia4s says:

Yeah I was wondering if we are really supposed to buy his supposed romance with his co-star? I mean….really? Sooooooooooo lame. But he’s so desperate and thirsty he will probably marry the poor girl.

    • Sam says:

Are you cancelling all of the actors who worked for Weinstein for all of those years, too? His predatory behavior was well-known to everyone. How about all of the actors who have worked with Woody Allen and Roman Polansky? Hmmmm. Are there any actors left that you can support?

I didn’t know about Bryan Singer. Many people didn’t.

      • joeylyn says:

David O. Russell has admitted to groping his transgendered niece and is generally known for being a disgusting pervert, and yet Christian Bale has worked with him multiple times. Bale = cancelled. Bradley Cooper has also worked with David O. Russell multiple times. Cancelled. Viggo Mortensen has uttered the n word in public like a total moron = cancelled. I’m sure if I dig deep enough, I can find some kind of dirt on Willem Dafoe = cancelled. Cancelled cancelled cancelled. All the people who did all of the things = cancelled. I am so outraged!

      • Mia4s says:

@Sam whether he knew or not, once he DID, the only thing he could come up with was: I didn’t know…maybe Freddie Mercury’s ghost sheilded me from knowing, and as fast as the allegations who knows what happens with that. Not once ounce of concern for victims or remorse.

And as I pointed out above those who worked with Weinstein and Allen were at least asked about it and expressed (or at least faked) some concern. He’s come across as an automaton who cares about nothing but a stupid trophy. It’s highly unappealing.

I don’t cancel people. He will work again. Fine. But by awarding an Oscar to him for a film by accused child rapist Bryan Singer, the pattern is perpetuated that you work with a predator and other than a few people whining online it’s all rewards. If it comes down to a choice between pushing back against Bryan Singer or awarding Malek his Oscar? Then honestly…f**k Malek.

      • Goran says:

The industry doesn’t push back against problematic filmmakers by taking it out on the actors who work for them. Blanchett has Oscar #2 as proof of this. That isn’t how it works or has ever worked.

      • eto says:

Why are you all so angry? A public figure does something I don’t like, I stop supporting them. Everyone is allowed to review the circumstances and make their decision.

And even if he didn’t know, the statement he made after the Atlantic published it was gross. Flat out. It was all about him and how he somehow managed to persevere. Sorry, I can’t forget that and the blame for THAT is squarely on him.

    • Mina says:

You all seem to forget that when Malek signed to star in this movie, what was more widely known about Bryan Singer is that he enjoyed the company of 17 year old male sex workers (which I know it’s incredibly reprehensible but not really a scandal in Hollywood’s La La Land). There were allegations of sexual abuse, but he had successfully got them dismissed so nothing ever came out of it (even though they were probably true). Even Jessica Chastain, who is keen on social justice, was willing to work with Singer as a producer in X-Men. Malek had a very difficult time working with Singer throughout the movie and was one of the reasons why he eventually got fired.

It’s kind of funny how you all seem to think that Hollywood works like some sort of small school in which everyone knows everything about everyone. And then you come to blogs like this to act like you’re all so knowing about what goes on inside the industry. Do you know how many rumors and gossip these actors must hear about every single person they work with? There comes a time when you have to ignore them, while they stay as rumors, or else you better not work at all. I’m sure you all investigate your coworkers private lives before you accept a job.

  24. S says:

Rami Malek virtually won the BAFTA award when the movie was released and now that there is controversy over Singer, it actually strengthens his position there. The British Academy will want to acknowledge the film in some way and Rami is the best place to do that. Oscar race is over.

  25. Jana says:

I looove me some Chris Pine, and I can even tolerate the Colonel Sanders suit, but those silly shoes with no socks just gross me out.

  26. Goran says:

It’s not like Christian Bale is some kind of boy scout. His temper tantrum was recorded and will exist on the internet forever. He shoved his mother and sister around. Just last night we got another glimpse of a possible drinking problem. As someone upthread pointed out, Bale has no problem accepting work from known perv DOR.

  27. Mina says:

The Academy voters won’t care about Bryan Singer, especially because Rami Malek was key in getting him fired from the movie. I think he’s certainly the frontrunner, but could still be beaten by Christian Bale. Although this year really showed what having more diverse Academy members mean, and I’m pretty sure Bohemian Rhapsody is stronger outside of the US than Vice.

  28. NicoleInSavannah says:

Eh, I don’t why I can’t stand this guy. I couldn’t get into Mr. Robot because he grates me for some odd reason. Last night he cemented my feelings.

  29. Kath says:

Am I the only one who HATED Malek’s portrayal?? Freddie was a beefy, swarthy masculine man, not some tiny little weird looking dude with googly BLUE EYES (FFS, did no one think think to fix that in the close-ups?). His accent was off and he has these weird mannerisms with his jaw that belong to the actor, not to the person he was supposed to be potraying. Mercury was fluid and commanding in his movements on stage. Malek simply copied – step by step – Freddie’s performances from videos. How is that in any way “acting”?

Plus, I hated Brian May and Roger Taylor re-writing history (almost all of the timelines and factual details were wrong) and backing Bryan Singer. Good on John Deacon for staying away from this mess.

    • xdanix says:

Totally agree with ALL of this.

    • chloe says:

I agree with your assessment, May and Taylor should be ashamed of themselves.

    • minx says:

Freddie wasn’t beefy at all. He was only about an inch taller than Malek—he was the shortest member of Queen, you can see that in many pictures or in the Radio Gaga video when they are lined up. He looked bigger because he had a somewhat large chest for his size—maybe from boxing? He also had very long arms and legs for his frame, which you can see from the Live Aid video. It gave him a graceful gait.

    • supersoft says:

Amen. But i guess most viewers forgot about the real Freddie Mercury.

  30. I think he looks like gomez addams

  31. Anastasia says:

Does Rami always look slightly jaundiced to anyone else?

And my love for Adam Driver will never die. NEVER.
