2019 Grammys Open Post: Hosted by American treasure Dolly Parton

MusiCares Person of the Year Gala in honor of Dolly Parton

Here is our Open Post for the 2019 Grammys. Our host this year is Dolly Parton, who was honored at the MusiCares event on Friday night in LA. She was the 2019 MusiCares Person of the Year, and lots of A-listers came out to celebrate the one and only Dolly. Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Mark Ronson, Linda Perry and Kacey Musgraves were just some of the attendees. The point? Everybody loves Dolly. Dolly is worthy of all the awards and honors. She is an American treasure.

I have another point here though, which is… this year’s Grammys are going to be terrible. While it was sort of funny that Taylor Swift’s Reputation got so snubbed, it also means that Taylor – who is arguably the biggest musical act in the world and the biggest pop star in the world – won’t be attending the #StruggleGrammys. Ariana Grande is also boycotting the Grammys this year because the douchebros in charge wouldn’t let her perform her hit single. Beyonce, Rihanna and Lorde are all skipping out too. From the looks of it, I think Lady Gaga is one of the few scheduled women to perform solo, and even then…she’ll be going solo because Bradley Cooper won’t be there to perform “Shallow” with her. My point is that Dolly Parton’s MusiCares gala probably got better A-list attendees than this year’s Grammys.

That being said, Dolly will perform at the Grammys, and she’ll be joined on-stage by Katy Perry, Kacey Musgraves, Maren Morris and Little Big Town (which sounds like a gigantic mess). Other performances: Travis Scott (probably doing “Sicko Mode”?), Dua Lipa and St. Vincent (huh), a tribute to Aretha Franklin, Cardi B (okay, she’s a MAJOR name, but I bet they make her perform with dudes), Shawn Mendes, Janelle Monae, Post Malone (with the Red Hot Chili Peppers), and Diana Ross at some point. The opening sounds genuinely exciting too, but we’ll see.

Glad I came back for Dolly. Class act, insane talent, self-aware. Watched her on CBS News Sunday Morning. What a treat!

The Dolly segment made me very happy

As for the Dolly tribute: Dolly is forever a Queen. She is magic.

Katy Perry was embarrassing and tried way too hard, she was off-key. How did she even qualify for the tribute? Kasey Musgraves was great. Miley did well. (Didn’t know who the little girl in white was?) Little Big Town took a backseat to Dolly during their part, which was fine bc I don’t care for them. I wish they could have gotten Carrie or Faith Hill to be a part of it. PS – It was fun watching Mark Ronson in the crowd getting really into the Dolly songs, that was unexpected.

Dolly came out and my 11 year old said “she still has it!” I told her that she has no idea.

I think this is the best Grammys in years. All those “names” mentioned above seem very unnecessary right now.

Absolutely. Best Grammy’s in recent memory, IMO. The ladies ruled the evening and even Anthony Kiedis couldn’t ruin it.

  10. Nev says:

CARDI is a star. She was amazing.
Dolly was incredible and Janelle was great.
    Ricky!!! SWOON.

I was hoping Tony Bennett would win another Grammy for traditional pop vocal album. He’s so much better than Willie Nelson.

    • outoftheshadows says:

Apples and oranges… they are both American treasures. I saw Tony Bennett outdoors in a concert close to Chicago, with a picnic under the stars. He was amazing, and already in his 80s at that point.

      • Riemc526 says:

That’s amazing! I haven’t seen him live but I grew up listening to him & Sinatra, Tormei, etc at Sunday dinners at my nonna’s. Maybe I wanted him to win (again) bc of the nostalgic memories I have.

  12. TeamAwesome says:

I’m watching mostly on mute, eagerly awaiting Brandi Carlile.
The opening was fun, and Janelle Monae freaking slayed. Katy Perry was out of her depth in the Dolly tribute, I thought.

I can’t imagine anyone disliking Alicia Keys. I have really enjoyed the show so far. I was so excited when This is America won, I just really wish Childish Gambino had been there to sing it. OMG Janelle. I really loved Cardi too. Dolly. I don’t know its been great all around!

  14. Nev says:

Love Diana Ross. What a DIVA.

  15. LB says:

Put your hands up! Diana said don’t be lazy!

  16. InVain says:

    Alicia Keys = snooze fest.

The whole thing is not good.

  17. Franny Days says:

    Love dolly.

  18. DiegoInSF says:

I loved JLo’s tribute, she looked just incredible. #speechless

  19. Clare says:

Right, I’ll be the one to say it. I’m over Ariana and high school behavior. There was NO reason to tweet ‘trash’ when Cardi one her Grammy. None. She knew EXACTLY how it would be read/taken by people, and she did it anyway. She doesn’t get to delete the tweet and say it wasn’t about Cardi….come on. I don’t care what she ‘meant’ but enough with her shitting on other people’s joy. Enough.

She at least owes Cardi an actual apology – other than ‘good for her. promise’ which is SO incredibly patronizing and rude.

    I will always love Dolly.
