Duchess Kate wore Sportmax & Michael Kors for a dreary, rainy day in Blackpool

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge visit the iconic Blackpool Tower

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are in Blackpool today, on what was supposed to be a day of activities highlighting local businesses, regeneration projects and the promotion of local tourism. Of course it was pissing rain. Come to the seaside resort of Blackpool, it looks f–king miserable. To her credit, Duchess Kate is trying to look happy, like she’s the ray of sunshine in this dreary, rain-soaked disaster.

Kate wore an olive-green Sportmax coat (£940) over a Michael Kors “peacock” dress. I’m surprised that she wore a new green coat this close to St. Patrick’s Day – you would think she would have saved it for her somewhat annual trip to the Irish Guards on St. Patrick’s Day. Kate also carried a Manu Atelier handbag (which we’ve seen before), and she was trying to balance that bag with her umbrella. I wouldn’t have been able to pull that off. The purse probably would have landed in a puddle and rain would be streaming down my face. Update: the Sportmax coat is a repeat, apparently.

Anyway, props to the Cambridges. I hate it when I have to go somewhere and it’s raining that hard. Will & Kate are finally working, even when it’s extremely inconvenient.

She always looks really good in the jewel tones.

    • tempest prognosticator says:

I agree. She looks very pretty.

      • Jan90067 says:

Love this whole look, hair (loose ponytail), makeup, down to the boots. That dress looks beautiful! It’s love to see it w/out the coat.

      • Mustang Sally says:

Yes! Her makeup is lovely (less dark eyeliner?) – she looks so pretty with less makeup on her face. Her styling here is wonderful – she indeed looks great in jewel tones.

    • minx says:

She does look great in jewel colors, so much better than that washed-out green dress yesterday.

    • Stubbylove says:

She does. She should wear her hair back more too rather than those awful tired sausage curls.

  2. Elisabeth says:

Kate’s worn this coat before, which makes me think her St. Patrick’s Day coat will be new.

    • Lorelei says:

I wonder if she’s wearing green today because she’s planning to “skip” the St. Patrick Day’s events again…

    • Annie. says:

This is the 4th time she wears this coat actually.
She seems to be in a “green obsession” lol

  3. likeafox says:

I usually don’t like Kate’s style, but I love that coat. Too bad it costs about my mortgage payment. :'(

    • SarSte says:

AGREE. Not usually into her style but I love this whole look. I googled the dress, and while the silhouette is bordering on schoolmarm, I would wear it just for the amazing pattern.

      • Beetlejuice says:

Yes the dress is shown a bit better on their Instagram. LOVE the pattern on it.

  4. manda says:

I like the coat! Is she wearing a scarf or something with it? I also like the boots! I feel like this is a more sophisticated look and I am really liking it on her

  5. KNMC says:

I’m loving that little purse. I have a purse fetish.

  6. Redburgandy says:

This is like the fourth time Kate has worn this coat so it’s hardly new!

  7. Kit says:

Looks like she’s been inspired by Meghan. The handbag, the high boots under a midi dress, the big scarf. It works, she looks much better here than usual. No pumps, tights or matronly or twee coat dress. And her hair is away from her face.

    • Muffy says:

Except I think she has worn all of the pieces you mention, pre-Meagan, and we’ve seen this look/silhouette on Kate several times.

      • Kit says:

She has worn the individual pieces of clothing before, not combined and styled like this. When have we ever seen this silhouette on Kate before? She usually combines coat dresses with visible tights, conservative pumps and boring clutches. That is like a uniform for her. This look is totally something Meghan would wear and has worn on many occasions, especially during her engagement days. And so what if Kate is inspired by her?

      • lipstickjangle says:

@Kit you should google royal christmas day at Sandringham 2015. Kate is wearing the exact same coat, paired with black boots & floral type dress! This is pretty much an identical look to what she has on today minus the hat!

        https://www.celebitchy.com/462814/duchess_kate_wore_a_1895_sportmax_coat_to_christmas_church_services_cute

      • emerson says:

yes, the items are pre- meghan but today they are styled (i.e. inspired) differently.

      • Salvation says:

Same coat same boots. Different look and totally different ensemble. In the 2015, she wore it with a belt and a hat/fascinator, which changed the entire look. This look is more chick and more Meghan style than Kate. To be a Kate style, she’d need to don a belt, lose the scarf and carry a clutch as opposed to a purse.
There absolutely nothing wrong with each women being inspired by the other, I don’t get why each fanbase gets their pants tied in knots whenever one is said to be inspired by the other, and yet same fanbase would be the first to point out how this or the other woman is copying this or the other woman.

      • lsb says:

Except that nothing about this looks says Meghan and everything about it says Kate. It isn’t a fascinator occasion hence there’s none. It is a cold wet day in the north of england, hence scarf.
Sometimes, ladies, a cigar is just a cigar.
And whether or not Katie’s inspired by Megan, this isn’t the look with which she shows it – may be the other way around (although I don’t think Meghan has found a winning style for herself yet).

    • Becks1 says:

I don’t know if it’s Meghan inspired, but I think what I like so much about this look is that she looks like a professional woman going to her job. It’s raining and cold, so she is going to wear a scarf and boots. Her coat is just a coat – not a coat dress. She’s wearing a pretty dress underneath. Her hair is pulled because rain and wind, etc. I find that when she dresses like this she looks much better than when she tries to dress “like a royal” whatever that means. (I’m thinking of her trousers and blazer for the Cyprus visit, looks like that.)

    • Lipstickjangle says:

You do realize that Kate has owned this coat since 2014! I’m pretty sure everything she’s wearing today is a repeat other than the dress which is also a classic Kate silhoutte

    • Tina says:

I generally agree that Kate looks great, but I would be very surprised if she wasn’t wearing tights. I don’t really understand the aversion that many Americans have to tights – it’s cold and rainy!

    • R says:

These women are individuals they are not making choices in a reaction to the other, they are not copying each other’s looks and so on and so on.

I honestly can’t with this constant pitting them against each other.

      • Lilla says:

Yes. Please stop comparing the two women. Each one shines in her own way.

      • Audrey says:

        Exactly!

      • minx says:

        Thank you!

      • Mumbles says:

Yeah I don’t get it. People didn’t pit Fergie against Diana back in the day and I wish they would stop doing it with these two.

And yes, I agree with everyone that says Late looks like a put-together 30-something professional and it’s a great look on her. Enough with the girly flouncy dresses tailored to be shorter. Trying to look younger than you are is actually aging (and besides, Kate is still a young woman, she’s just not a co-ed or twenty something any more.)

      • nic919 says:

I am old enough to recall that Diana and Fergie were constantly compared especially with respect to fashion. The only difference was that Fergie tended to lose in that comparison.

    • Eliza says:

It’s almost a carbon copy of her 2015 Wales visit. Same hair. Similar coat. Same/ similar boots.

      • Becks1 says:

But she wore jeans to that visit if we are thinking of that same way, which changed the overall look.

    • Becks1 says:

I’m loving that Kit’s comment (and most of the comments in general) have been very positive about this look and people are STILL getting defensive lol. Like CB and Kaiser said on the podcast, we really do fight about everything on these royal posts lol.

      • Linda says:

        @Becks1
Her comment is actually passive aggressive just like yours is.

      • Ahoyoy says:

The bar is just so low on this girl that we’re all stunned that she could come up with a semi-appropriate day wear outfit. I still think this coat looks chintzy and not appropriate for rainy weather (wet wool is a terrible smell) and the dress is ugly but this looks better than her normal flight attendant cosplay. She’s winning the expectations game today. Tomorrow she’ll be back in her hideous headbands and duplicate coatdress mess.

      • Becks1 says:

@Linda I wasn’t passive at all. I thought I was pretty upfront in my opinion. Shrug.

      • lsb says:

Linda, spot on. On all fronts. Well spotted.

    • Ahoyoy says:

Agree. The dress underneath the coat is ugly, but this is how a professional woman dresses. She needs to get herself some quality separates and learn how to mix and match them with her legion of coats.

      • vava says:

+1 The dress is polyester – UGH. The style is school marmish, too, and best left to being hidden under the coat. Ahoyoy, once again I’m in complete agreement with you.

  8. Becks1 says:

This is a really good look for her. I haven’t seen pics yet of the dress underneath, but the coat looks nice on her, the scarf and boots look nice and practical, and I do usually like her hair pulled back like that.

This might have been a good time to have skipped the handbag though if she could have, it looks awkward balancing something in both hands like that.

  9. Lexa says:

She looks good today! It feels like a complete look with the accessories.

This is the type of visit she and Will should do more of.

  10. Vanessa says:

Dammit, I love to hate on her, but she looks great. Gotta say it.

  11. akasamsmom says:

And not one visible button! That coat, and the colour, is great on her.

  12. RoyalBlue says:

She looks fantastic today. Boots, hair, gloves, jacket. Everything on point.

  13. JJL says:

She looks so great! Love Duchess Catherine!

  14. MrsBump says:

Love everything about this look , the boots, that luscious coat , even the dress underneath. i’d wear the whole thing.

  15. R says:

She looks gorgeous!! She needs to wear vibrant colors whether they be bright or dark but these muted tones do nothing for her.

I really like the look especially the boots.

  16. FredsMother says:

The Duchess looks very nice. Nicely put together, weather-appropriate, and professional. 💚💚💚That rain though… ☔☔☔

  17. Who ARE These People? says:

Hang the purse on the umbrella handle – there, problem solved!

  18. Beach Dreams says:

A nice look that’s neither matronly nor twee. Good on Kate for venturing out of the box.

  19. Jan says:

She looks fantastic, but I recall that Meghan wore a chiffon dress and suede boots in bad weather literally 4 weeks ago and people gagged about it…it wasn’t “weather appropriate,” etc. etc. (not here, mainly, but on other sites). I can’t help but laugh to see opinions change so quickly.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Yes, it’s the same as when Meghan was criticized for her “inappropriate” one-shoulder dress at the Brit Fashion awards, then Kate was called a Greek goddess when she wore one weeks later to the BAFTAs.

    • Lilla says:

Yes but Meghan’s dress was chiffon, not suited for daytime really, and it hung down way below the coat which IMO looked bad, and worst thing was it dragged in the wet puddles when she stooped and someone had to hold it up for her, like a servant. I think those were the things that made people comment. Kate’s dress is not showing under the hem of her coat and it’s not chiffon.

If people are going to say “copying Meghan, she did it first” any time a woman wears a coat over a dress, it will be ridiculous.

      • LizB says:

Kate’s dress is most definitely showing under the hem of her coat. The pics in this post don’t show it, but there are many others.

      • Jan says:

I’m sorry, that material is not chiffon?

    • HP says:

Kate has worn weatherproof suede boots (Aquatalia) in the past…. maybe thats what these are? Not sure about whether Meghan’s were too?

  20. Mia says:

I like Kate’s style overall. She looks really pretty in these photos. Green is a nice color on her.

  21. Alittlesugar says:

She refused an umbrella later on because she wanted people to be able to see her. Props to her since it was a rainy day and she could have used one if she wanted to.

  22. KidV says:

Love the coat and boots. Suede boots on a rainy day, not a good idea.

    Kate looks good.

  23. vava says:

Oh poor Kate having to go out in the rain like that……………..NO SYMPATHY FROM ME. I live in Oregon where it rains constantly.

I don’t mind the outfit, but I dislike those boots. The bag is cute and green is a good color on her.

  24. Maria says:

She looks great. I love het hair up, with all that hair, when she wears it down sometimes it hides her face, and she does have a very pretty face.

  25. Flying Fish says:

I love the coat, the dress is fug.
    The dolittles are doing!

  26. Rae says:

Liking this look a lot. As per many above, not usually crazy about Kate’s choices, but this one looks fantastic to me.

I want that coat…alas, being a short arse, I wouldn’t pull it off.

  27. Zazu says:

She looks so polished and gorgeous in this outfit. I think the overall look is really pulled together. It’s more of a powerful look to me then some of the more “dainty” or conservative looks she goes for usually.

  28. Carolind says:

I like all the different parts of today’s outfit unlike yesterday’s wishy washy dress.

Please, what are pantyhose? I thought they were tights but someone earlier seems to imply they are different.

    • Ju says:

Huh? Pantyhose and tights are the exact same thing. They’re called pantyhose in America, tights in the UK.

      • Canadiangirl says:

So Canaadian here, but tights are thicker, generally opaque while pantyhose are sheer (and often meant to be skin toned). I hate pantyhose but wear tights.

      • Tina says:

Yes, what Canadiangirl said. All legwear has a particular denier (thickness). Pantyhose are low denier (8-20). Most tights are higher denier, 30 and up. My thickest tights are 70 denier, and are the loveliest, warmest things going. They’re not cheap but it’s worth investing in a pair of Wolford Neon 40 or Satin Opaque 50, they feel amazing to wear and last forever.

  29. Pandy says:

Just a great coat, scarf, boot and ponytail combo!!!

  30. Jaded says:

She appears to be wearing less eyeliner too – nothing makes you look harder than heavy rings around your eyes.

  31. Seraphina says:

I think she looks great. OMG. I cant believe I wrote that.

  32. Piratesgal says:

She actually looks fab. New stylist?

  33. Mego says:

She looks great in this ensemble. Hair and make up good too. This colour really works with her complexion.

  34. A says:

She looks good. Fwiw, I don’t think she’s consciously trying to copy Meghan. I think she absorbs a lot of influences from around her without being fully aware of it, hence why it looks like copying when it’s not. I think she lacks a real sense of style sometimes. She knows what she likes to wear, but she often doesn’t know how to make it look good on her, hence the weird alterations and such sometimes.

This coat was a repeat from at least one of the St. Patrick’s Day outings. I like the pulled back hair. The black scarf is very Prince Frederik of Denmark. I’m going to be very unhappy if she pulls out a brand new green coat for St. Paddy’s tbh. Or, god forbid, a freaking copy of another coat or coat-dress that she’s already worn, but in green. I s2g. Don’t do it Kate. Just take one of the six+ green coats in your closet, style your hair differently, and wear a different brooch if you can. Just don’t splurge unnecessary money on yet another coat.

  35. khaveman says:

Nice look for her even though it’s raining!
