Nico Parker on being told she looks like her mom, Thandie Newton: ‘I don’t see it’

Nico Parker, 14, is the daughter of Thandie Newton and director Ol Parker (Mama Mia, Here We Go Again). Thandie and Ol have been married 21 years! Nico is starring in the Dumbo remake, and everyone is commenting about how much she looks like her mom. She sounds like her too! I saw the cutest tweet that Nico stole her mom’s face. She was a guest on Colbert this week and she was funny and seemed comfortable with being interviewed. She joked about how she’s learning to walk a red carpet like her mom and she said she doesn’t think she looks like her!

On her mom’s red carpet persona
She’s like a salamander she just doesn’t blink at all

“You look remarkably like [your mom]. I’m sure someone has told you that”
I get told that a lot. I don’t see it. We’re similar. *shrugs*

On thinking Oprah was the queen of the world
I get to meet some cool people. When I was [three] my family stayed with Oprah. I didn’t know who she was. I asked ‘who is Oprah?’ My mom was like ‘She’s the queen of the world.’ I then for a long time believed that Oprah was the queen of the world.

“Have you seen Dumbo before?”
I’ve seen it a lot growing up. My mom would always cry when Dumbo loses his mom. It’s very sad but I never understood it. Then I watched it back recently. It was really sad.

That was a cute story about how she thought Oprah was the queen of the world! Also, she’s a doppelganger for her mom but she doesn’t think she looks like her! That’s such a teenager thing to say and think. It’s cute that she watched Dumbo so often when she was young. At first I thought her dad was directing the remake, but it’s by Tim Burton. This was the first interview I’ve seen with Nico and she came across so well. She’s on Instagram (thanks Bluesky) but her account is very work-focused and she hasn’t posted much.

Here’s the interview!

Lol she looks exactly like her mom. I don’t think we’re great judges of that. I get told I look like my mom too, and I don’t really see it either.

    • Mel M says:

I didn’t know who she was and when I first saw her I thought “This girl looks so much like Thandie Newton.” So I googled her to see if she was related.

  2. Michael says:

    She is adorable.

  3. perplexed says:

She sort of sounds like her mom too in how she expresses herself, I think.

I suppose she benefits from nepotism, but she seems less annoying than Millie Bobby Brown. Less put on or something. Thandie Newton’s daughter’s personality seems kind of charming. (she has a certain softness that’s sweet, I guess?). I usually find some of those teen stars a bit irritating to listen to, but she seems ok.

    • thaliasghost says:

Millie Bobby Brown however was financially responsible for her family and went out to the US unknown and without money to make her name. Being more easily charming comes with being connected from the get go and growing up in the ‘right circles’ and with those advantages.

You’ll find that pattern across the board when it comes to privileged people knowing their “habitus” (see Bordieu) and thus being successful.

      • perplexed says:

Good point. I should factor that in. I take it fully as completely logical.

That said, I do think this kid also comes across as less annoying than other children of celebrities. If I had to listen to David Beckham’s kids speak on television, I suspect I’d turn off the tv. Gwyneth Paltrow is a grown-up adult born of privilege and goodness knows I don’t want to listen to her.

I suspect it’s this kid’s soft-spokenness I find endearing. A lot of people are so loud and brash nowadays (but not for reasons that make any sense to me). This is also probably why I don’t mind watching Nicole Kidman in interviews (she seems more….down-to-earth in her soft-spokenness as opposed to someone like Julia Roberts who seems in love with herself despite being charming in a different way). But obviously this is only an opinion. Others probably prefer more out-there personalities, and that’s fine too.

  4. SJR says:

Cute story, and of course, she does look like her Mom. 🙂
Thandie is a beautiful woman and this kiddo is lucky to also be a very lovely young girl.

And as for Dumbo..yes, Disney can almost print money can’t they?
Every kid in my extended family is wanting to go see this and I, as the Auntie, will become most popular grownup on the day I take them all to see it. We all saw Mary Poppins Returns together too.

  5. Annaloo. says:

Pretty girl, looks like her Mom… so utterly turned off by all the nepotism in Hollywood. Who gets a debut role in a Disney movie other than a manor-born, celebrity star’s child? I guess also coming soon the unavoidable “careers” of Apple Martin, Ava Phillipe, etc from Nepotism U – they are all so inevitably groomed for it. Yes, Hollywood Scion have been around forever and l AM SO TIRED of them when their novelty wears off and the predictable mediocrity shows..

    • minx says:

      Same.

    • perplexed says:

I think she definitely benefits from nepotism, but I also think she’s striking like her mother is. Granted, she’s only 14. Who knows what she’ll be like at 24 or 35. But I think nepotism is easier to take when you can see the charm in someone. I think this girl does have a certain charm about her.

Julia Roberts’s niece Emma Roberts doesn’t have any charm (I guess she got Julia’s arrogance, but the charm gene went missing), so her benefits from nepotism I don’t get. Why she’s still benefiting from it is baffling to me.

  6. Avery says:

I’ve been told more than once that I look like Thandie Newton and my daughter looks like Chrissy Tiegen so I don’t know how to take that about my daughter…she doesn’t take it as a compliment.

    • Lizzie says:

chrissy tiegen is beautiful so it should be taken as a compliment since it most certainly was meant as one.

      • Avery says:

@ Lizzie My daughter hasn’t come in to being comfortable with her round face and square jaw. It’s an odd combination but I think she’s beautiful…getting a teenage girl to see that about herself is a different story. I’m constantly trying to combat society’s standard of beauty in her head.

    • Slowsnow says:

Chrissy Tiegen is GORGEOUS in such an unusual way. I love her face.

      • Avery says:

@slowsnow I think it is our round faces and then she got her dad’s square jaw with strong cheek bones. I’m hoping as she gets older she feels comfortable with it. I wish I could show you guys a picture of the resemblance. She thinks I am just saying these things because I am her mother…one day I will sit and say I told you so.

  7. Ifeoma says:

She’s also on the cover of Teen Vogue with Marsai Martin, a fellow queen. I always confuse Thandie Newton with Zoe Saldana so I was a bit surprised to find out Nico is her child.

    • Michael says:

Zoe and Thandi have become friendly because people mistake them for each other all the time. Personally I much prefer Thandi myself

      • Ifeoma says:

I don’t really watch a lot of movies (I just follow gossip) so I don’t know who the better actress is. They are both really private though.

  8. Tiffany says:

Her Dad directed one of my all time favorite films that never got its due, Imagine Me And You. It is a smart, funny, cute film that just gives you so much comfort.

    I strongly recommend it.

  9. Case says:

OMG she looks just like her. Such a lovely young lady. I love the name “Nico,” too.

  10. BlueSky says:

She actually is on IG @nicoparkerofficial

  11. Veronica S. says:

I can see it around the cheekbones and eyes, but honestly, I think she’s a pretty evident blend of features from her parents. Her nose is noticeably different than Thandie’s, and her general facial shape is different. Cute girl, though.

    • ifeoma says:

Thandie had a nose job early on, a couple of decades ago. Nico is very pretty and I hope she doesn’t do the same.

      • Veronica S. says:

I was wondering if she had, though she didn’t go as crazy thin in the bridge as some celebs do. I would hope her daughter doesn’t do the same, either, because I think her nose fits her face quite nicely.

      • Ifeoma says:

@Ifeoma, I love your name, it’s mine too. Lol. Do you stay in Nigeria?

      • JustSayin' says:

Thandie’s nose looks the same to me.

Nico’s nose looks like her dad’s nose.

      • minx says:

She’s had a refinement of the tip of her nose, she had her old nose in Interview With a Vampire. It’s well done, subtle.

      • Hotsauceinmybag says:

I fell into a hole trying to verify this and I really don’t see how she had a nose job?? I saw a picture of her as a young child with a nose that looks just like the one she has now… Maybe I’m missing something.

Either way she is still gorgeous to me.

      • JustSayin' says:

That’s the popular thing to do to beautiful women – accuse them of having PS.

    • Anna says:

Agreed. I think the upper half of her face looks like Thandi, lower half starting with nose and especially mouth/chin area are just like her father’s.

  12. elimaeby says:

She is such a lovely, charming young lady. I agree with some of the above posts about the drudgery of nepotism, but she is actually enjoyable to watch. I look forward to seeing more of her.

  13. Lightpurple says:

    Thandie has very strong genes.

  14. smee says:

Her nose is different than her mother’s but she’s still growing….

Her red carpet style is incredible. Age appropriate and elegant.

    • Bella Bella says:

That’s because her mother had a nose job! LOL

      • JustSayin' says:

        Doubt it.
Thandie’s nose never looked like nicos even when she was a kid.
Google pics of her when she was younger.
Thandie is extremely thin now, that’s the only thing that’s different about her.

  15. Svea says:

I really appreciate Thandi as an actress and person. Also her marriage and family seem strong. It will be interesting to see what Nico does with her career.

  16. Seraphina says:

My youngest, a boy, is said to look just like me and I don’t see it. My husband calls us: A1 and A2. But for some reason I just can’t see it.

  17. Cindy says:

They look so much alike in that picture they have together with both smiling. Both of them are absolutely stunning.

  18. Gil says:

She looks just like her mom, she is identical. Both are really beautiful I love their hair.

  19. Other Renee says:

Some of the nepotism kids are probably very talented. It’s just that getting into the door to audition is something they get easily whereas the thousands of other equally as talented kids from no name parents will not. And may never. That’s the really sad thing and what makes me side eye even a talented nepotism kid. Cue the “I work so hard” line that they all spout somewhere in their late teens or early twenties.

  20. Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I used to hate when people said I look like my mom and she was one of those who took very seriously the “like sisters” polite, but untrue, compliments. Really I look like my dad and it was one of those: your parents broke up, child who look like one or the other has to put up with lots of nonsense that should not be thrown on a child. My daughter looks so much like me and it’s never bothered her, she says “I’m proud when people say I look like you” *sniff*. Not really anything to do with this, but it reminded me. Nico’s lovely and I’m not sure I can handle the trauma of watching a live-action Dumbo.

  21. TheOriginalMia says:

She is her mom’s doppelgänger. Wow! She is a sweetheart. Hope she stays grounded.

  22. Snowflake says:

She’s adorable. I love her accent

  23. Beezers says:

I was in a waiting room once with two women who looked like twins. When the person came out to get one sister, she had to ask which one was which because she said, “You two look so much alike.” Both of them said, “People always say that, but we don’t see it.”

  24. Mirage says:

    She’s beautiful!
I don’t see that much of a resemblance with Thandie either.
She really is a blend between her mum and her dad.

  25. Mina says:

Nico Parker looks a lot like her mom and is gorgeous but after watching Dumbo, I don’t think she inherited her mother’s talent for acting.

  26. Reeta Skeeter says:

Beautiful girl undoubtedly, but I’m another who is sick of the nepotism. It would be nice to see fresh new stars rather than the offspring of Hollywood royalty – you don’t want someone who looks like Thandi Newton or Brad Pitt etc, you just want a NEW star, a NEW face. It seems films of the future will just be flooded with offspring rather than exciting new talent. Still waiting for the next movie star….
