The ‘Global Sussex Baby Shower’ raised thousands of dollars for worthy charities

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visit the Andalusian Gardens

I’m covering this rare positive-Meghan story per request! Mother’s Day was Sunday in the UK, and to celebrate the event, the Duchess of Sussex’s biggest fans decided to spread some charitable positivity. A Twitter fan account started the #GlobalSussexBabyShower hashtag and encouraged Meg fans or Sussex fans to donate money to one or several charities and patronages now associated with Meghan. The result was thousands of dollars/pounds being donated to worthy charities!

The Duchess of Sussex’s favourite charities have revealed a Twitter campaign by royal fans has helped them raise over £15,000, in just 24 hours. Fans of Meghan Markle, 37, celebrated the upcoming birth of Baby Sussex with the hashtag #GlobalSussexBabyShower.

They asked one another to share donations or other items with charities associated to the Duchess of Sussex. Charities including the Mayhew, an animal welfare charity, and CAMFED, which works to educate girls in rural Africa, were among those that received donations and said they were stunned by the campaign. CAMFED reported they had received over £8,942, and called the movement ‘a great result for girls and young women in Africa.’

While the Mayhew said they’d been absolutely ‘blown away’ by responses over the weekend, and called their total of over £4,100 ‘an incredible amount’.

[From The Daily Mail]

The baby shower donations were started by a woman named Elle Harris (@freepeeper), who was also interviewed by Good Morning America on Monday. She said that she started the baby shower hashtag to show that: “Twitter can be a pretty negative space. I hoped the hashtag would promote kindness in our little corner of the internet.” She also wanted to spread positivity about Meghan in particular because of the smear campaign and show the Sussexes that “there are many people out there are inspired by their examples, who support them, and who are so happy for the impending addition to their family.” It’s a really sweet story.

That is phenomenal! Positivity out of the mess that the press has made.

  2. aquarius64 says:

Nice to see a positive story about Meghan. Her critics have no influence no matter how hard they try.

Side note – Ed O’neill talked about Meghan on the Married with Children set. Daddy was called the camera operator
    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-6875493/Ed-ONeil-reveals-Meghan-Markle-grew-set-Married-Children.html

Either Daddy fibbed about his job or O’neill dismissed him as a person of no importance. That’s gotta sting.

    • Digital Unicorn says:

Daddy has fibbed about a great many things but he did get an Emmy for work on the show. This could be Ed’s way of delivering a smack down to Evil Papa Smurf and they way he has treated his daughter in public – no real father would do that.

      • Royalwatcher says:

That’s what I was thinking too, smack down.

      • Daphyllis says:

I don’t like Thomas Markle but a smack down? GMAB. It’s been 30 years—isn’t it more than possible that Ed didn’t remember his official title?

      • Megan says:

I doubt Ed Harris follows royal gossip. He just misstated his job.

      • Hikaru says:

Yup. She was still called Rachel at the time too, so Ed mixed up both.

  3. Digital Unicorn says:

This is great and I hope the Sussex’s make a statement about it – it shows the positive side of Social Media and is a great eff you to the UK tabloids who like to push that she is not popular, she is.

Social Media is in many ways more powerful than the main stream media dinosaurs.

    • Erinn says:

And I think that terrifies the dinosaurs, tbh.

This was an amazing thing that is going to benefit a lot of people. Sometimes I really have little faith in the world – then people manage to pull through and do something like this. I bet H&M are thrilled.

  4. HK9 says:

Nice to get some good news and get away for the manufactured negativity. If this is the effect she’s got on people, I’m all for it.

    • Citresse says:

Yes, if goodness spreads, then I’m happy……. however MM should do more to help underprivileged children in CANADA too…MM don’t forget your home on the way up.

      • HK9 says:

As a Canadian I know she lived in Canada for some time, but I think it would be best for Canadians if they helped their own underprivileged children that we pretend aren’t here because many people don’t like the populations they come from, and ignore the history that put them there. Megan is one person, Canadians are many and if we as Canadians would truly get into the habit of helping our own without judgement we could all be a lot better off.

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Meghan is American and was raised in California. If you are Canadian and want more attention brought to Canadian charities then do the work yourself. Just as I do the work where I’m from.

      • mazzie says:

She’s American and only in Toronto for less than 10 years. We should be doing a better job supporting our own people. Especially you, Doug Ford.

      • Mia says:

@Citress why not take this time to donate to your favorite charity and encourage other Canadians to get involve. Social media is very powerful and can be used for good, why not try it. #DontHateDonate

    • Himmiefan says:

I’m floored that the DM even reported on this since it’s a positive story.

Hey, where are the people who say showers are gauche?

      • Lorelei says:

@HimmieFan I’m also surprised that the Fail covered it, but it became such a huge story on Twitter that I think they kind of had to (and even in that article there were a couple of jabs about her NYC shower).

It really took off and the amounts kept going up yesterday every time I saw a new headline, it was amazing! It was covered by so many publications like Glamour, ITV, Bazaar, Town & Country, and a long list of others I can’t even remember at the moment.

I know that it wasn’t done for recognition, but I would love it if the Palace acknowledged it somehow. I just think that would be a meaningful statement for them to make on Meghan’s behalf.. I also hope that somehow they are able to tally the total amount given since each organization is keeping track of the donations they receive in Meghan’s honor. I wouldn’t be surprised if it reaches £100K in the near future. It’s the best thing I’ve seen on social media in a long time!!

And it is so nice to see so many positive stories about Meghan. The usual RRs haven’t even mentioned it since they’re so petty, but Omid, Chris Ship, Victoria Arbiter, Hannah Furness and a couple of others tweeted about it yesterday.

ETA: @Isalund I believe it was Camilla Tominey who wrote the article saying that Meghan fans were bots. I don’t have the link but it’s easy to find. It was a ridiculous assertion from a ridiculous woman.

  5. Dignity says:

I was waiting for you to comment about it instead of rinse and repeat Meghan clothes costs. Such a positive movement. They call Meghan’s fans bots and now all the naysayers can see they are not from Russia or working for Putin to destabilise the Monarchy as some royal reporters insinuated. This campaign is going until mother’s Day in USA and I hope people will donate and more. I myself donated to 3 organisations. Well child, CAMFED and transplants organisation. #globalsussexbabyshower #donthatedonate

    • IlsaLund says:

Wait…are you serious? The Meghan haters and RRs actually insinuate that Meghan stans are bots or Russian operatives trying to bring down the monarchy? What about Cambridge Analytic and their role in Brexit?

    • 90sgirl says:

      Well said.
      It’s so beautiful.

    • Himmiefan says:

Funny since I think many of the DM commenters are bots.

      • oddly says:

I’ve found that when ever I comment on something obviously illogical and made up and the comment is getting lots of positive clicks , the comment disappears after a few hours with a notification they have had several complaints and the comment has been deleted.

The last time was when simply I pointed out that The DM was getting sillier by the day with it’s Meghan click bait articles . The article was such obvious rubbish about about the Sussex’s asking Elton John to give the baby piano lessons.

So it seems that many positive Meghan comments are simply deleted after a few of the anti-Meg trolls complain, perhaps the reverse might work (or might not, depending on the DM’s agenda) if we complain about the nastier comments.

  6. Shakemax says:

    Great idea!

However I had to laugh because the lady that started it said twitter was a negative place & she wants to promote kindness. However if you read her account she has said a lot of disparaging & nasty things about Kate. If only she would follow her own advice about spreading positivity!

    • Royalwatcher says:

She did say she included herself or that she also wants to do better (or something to that effect). So at least she’s got some self awareness.

    • Peg says:

Just maybe she turned over a new page, so yeah to her for starting something positive.

    • Taranga says:

This person is a regular Kate troll who was still writing negative comments on her twitter account just last week. One good deed does not wipe the slate clean. The positive thing is that now that the spotlight is on her she might be forced to change her tone. The royal twitter fandom has become so toxic on all sides so one less person that adds to that is a step in the right direction.

    • Beach Dreams says:

Actually among the Sussex fan accounts, she’s one of the least negative ones towards the Cambridge fans. It’s funny that you and Taranga want to pretend that she constantly hates on the Cambridges when she usually ignores them. Whatever suits your bitter attitudes I guess 😏

      • notasugarhere says:

Kate stans always try so hard to damage the reputation of Meghan fans, Beach Dreams, don’t they? It is a pattern they done for years against anyone who criticizes Kate. Try to bully them into quitting or make fake assertions to damage reputations. Typical.

      • Beach Dreams says:

@nota: it’s even worse this time because they’re trying to slander someone who’s pushing a good cause. Charities are getting much needed donations and all they care about is inserting Kate any way they can.

      • Nic919 says:

Maybe freepeeper can help raise money for EACH?

      • Reese. says:

Or they themselves defend their own racist rhetoric and show their true colours without any help at all! Amazing how that happens!!!

      • Margaritas For Breakfast says:

In the past I didn’t think much about Kate either way. I liked looking at gossip sites to see what she was wearing or how her pregnancy was progressing. I felt compelled to take swipes at Kate after all the batshit insane racist nasty ugly violent things women said and continue to say about Meghan. They took pleasure in casting Kate as Angelic and Meghan as Demonic. Piers Morgan especially enraged me. I dreamed of Oprah, Michelle, Tina Turner etc slapping him. It was the treatment doled out to Michelle Obama on steroids! Women actually go as far as saying Meghan wants to sleep with Charles and become his queen or even that she wants to kill Kate, Will and their 3 kids so Harry can be king. Then came the bleating accusations of her being a malignant narcissist. It made me sick of British and American women. I took to defending Meghan on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook. At first there were very few defending Meghan and I was deemed a MegBot of a Meghan Sugar. I’ve only recently started taking a step back and realizing it was all too much. It’s too heavy. Meghan and Kate will be fine. I remain firmly Team Meghan though.

  7. Peg says:

WellChild donations are low, because donors had a hard time donating to the site, it is fixed now.
The little girl in New York, that received flowers from Meghan’s shower, is also getting donations, her mom said the flowers made her smile, she is going in for her thirtieth surgery.

  8. Royalwatcher says:

I donated to the Mayhew and Camfed. It’s wonderful to be a part of such a positive movement. Everyone was so supportive of each other tweeting and sharing over the weekend, it made me feel great!! One sweet young woman said she didn’t have money to donate right now but she and her mother were going to make care packages for the homeless people in her town and go and pass them out. People are also donating to local charities that they support or have wanted to support. It’s fantastic!

Omid reported that the Sussexes are aware of the campaign and have been moved.

I think as of today the figures are up to about £30k! 20 or so to Camfed and 5 or so each to WellChild and the Mayhew. Not to mention additional charities. I saw a lot of people donating to Invictus this morning after news that 98yo Daphne died since her husband was a veteran and she always wore his medals. 😢

    • Peg says:

I saw that Daphne passed, last week she turned 99, and someone told Harry and he sent her birthday wishes.
She was in the Hospital for two months with Pneumonia.

    • Sparkly says:

Their story was so sweet. I’m sorry to hear that she passed without getting to meet the baby. Daphne was well loved. RIP

  9. MeghanNotMarkle says:

I would love to donate when I get paid. Such a wonderful way to kick the naysayers to the curb!

  10. tempest prognosticator says:

    This is heartwarming.

  11. Becks1 says:

This is such a nice story. What a wonderful way to show Meghan and Harry that people out there love them and don’t buy into all the negative stories.

  12. The fans of the Cambridge we were trying we tried to sabotage this good initiative with insults it’s really sickening sad these people are really bad

    • V. says:

Both couples have obsessive “fans”,even if I tend to think that a lot of those you refers to as Cambridges’ stans are not really their “stans” but random persons or avid royal watchers reacting to Meghan.
And there’s absolutely an unhealthy and obsessive approach among M&H’s “fabs” too.
This is a nice initiative, but as someone says above,a lot of these persons (not everyone obviously),don’t see their own hypocrisy. It’s actually quite fascinating to watch.
Sometimes I wonder how some of these people have a life outside social media. I can’t even think about wasting my time tweeting all day, fighting, harassing people, being petty, because I “stan” someone.. It’s batshit crazy.

      • notasugarhere says:

Yet you’re here, having knowledge about the fandom because of time spent watching it, while pretending you don’t invest time in it. LOL

      • Margaritas For Breakfast says:

Yet you wasted your time commenting online to try and diminish Meghan’s supporters…

      • V. says:

I don’t need to “invest” my precious time to understand the basic dynamics of of the unhinged world of stantwitter and staninstagram.. LOL
They’re always the same for every celebrity, and in this case you just need to lurk OCCASIONALLY under whatever KP tweets and posts.Or you can see how some people comments on certain blogs and forums, that I read regardless of them.
I would invest my precious time if I had accounts devoted to “stan” persons because I live vicariously through them, and if I had accounts devoted to fight with people 24/7 whenever there’s a hint of criticism because I have to defend the honor of people who don’t know about my existence. It’s quite pathetic,if you ask me. Granted, the obsessive and irrational hatred has the same dynamics, whether the subject is one couple or the other..

      • notasugarhere says:

You’ve invested so much of your precious time to keep coming back, reading, and commenting. If it upsets you so, don’t spent time on it.

    • Beach Dreams says:

We even have a couple here who are trying to claim that the twitter user who started the fundraiser is an obsessed Cambridge hater. It’s quite sad.

      • notasugarhere says:

The haters are already lined up and subscribed to the new Sussex instagram account.

    • Mia says:

There was a Cambridge fan who was supportive and donated. Thought that was a nice touch

  13. Jamandbreach says:

Kudos to this woman Elle for starting such a great movement. But I’m curious, apart from the crazies who believe her fans are bots, how does this help the naysayers? Of course, Meghan has fans, but she’s still overspending (for those that care), American (which the snooty aristos hate) and of African-American origin (bad for the racists). I think it is great to use her as a reason to promote donations to great organizations, but I’m not sure it does much to negate the negative press she’s getting.

    • Peg says:

Who is believing the negative press will continue to do so, because it makes them feel better about their miserable lives.

    • Bluthfan says:

Some of the RRs think Meghan’s fans are bots as well.

    • Margaritas For Breakfast says:

The point is driven home that Meghan is not universally hated as the Haters believe. Meghan has a global fandom. In their nasty tirades Meghan Haters are convinced that everyone hates her, she is being shunned by the royal fami!y and the Queen will send her packing as soon as the baby arrives. Not only does GlobalSussexBabyShower prove Meghan has global influence and global love but it’s benefiting British charities in honor of Meghan’s child. How awesome is that?

      • Some chick says:

It’s absolutely perfect! This is what the internet should be doing. Great to see it covered here! The Meghan negging stories get old and same-same after a while.

        Go, GlobalSussexBabyShower!

Also looking forward to the new Sussex insty. Yeah!

      • Nic919 says:

So many people tried to follow them on IG that they almost busted the site. There is an algorithm in place now to limit the follows to 1,300 per minute because prior to that it was 7,000 per minute and destabilizing the platform.

  14. Lisa says:

    Awesome bit of positivity.

  15. lucy2 says:

That’s great, and wonderful for the charities.
It’s nice when people can come together for something good.

  16. Loretta says:

This is great and so good!

  17. Lady D says:

Brilliant idea and 3 cheers to clever @freepeeper. Good for you for spreading kindness instead of bile and hate. I’m glad this campaign is such a success.

  18. A says:

They have launched their own social media accounts.

  19. ds says:

    They opened their new IG!

    • Lorelei says:

I hope they will also have their own Twitter account because I’m not on Instagram and don’t want to be. But they can disable the comments there, so I would understand if they only have that account. I’m happy for them that they finally have their own though!

      • Nic919 says:

Sussexroyal seems to belong to someone else on twitter at the moment. They are likely working on changing that soon.

  20. The Original Mia says:

This was a nice breath of fresh air from the usual crap that’s spewed about Meghan. I’m thrilled for the charities and for the Sussexes. They do have the support of a lot of people worldwide.

  21. FluffyPrincess says:

    What an awesome idea!

  22. Yami says:

I donated to One25 and I’ll be supporting them regularly from now on. It feels good to know that my money is doing good and supporting the work that Duchess Meghan does at the same time.

  23. intheknow says:

The Sussexes just launched their own instagram!

  24. ravynrobyn says:

    This made me cry!
