Donald Trump: George Washington was a chump for not putting his name on everything

President Donald J. Trump participates in a roundtable discussion on School Safety

Donald Trump is rooted in ahistorical ignorance. He doesn’t even understand the depth of his own stupidity, and his apathy at learning even bare-bones history is well known. It doesn’t help matters that he’s also one of the tackiest men to ever exist, a person who believes “class” is a buffet of fast food and gold-plated everything. He’s also got to put his stupid Nazi name on everything because he thinks that’s classy. So when Donald Trump visited Mount Vernon a year ago with the French president, he showed off just how tacky and ignorant he really is:

President Donald Trump had some advice for George Washington. During a guided tour of Mount Vernon last April with French president Emmanuel Macron, Trump learned that Washington was one of the major real-estate speculators of his era. So, he couldn’t understand why America’s first president didn’t name his historic Virginia compound or any of the other property he acquired after himself.

“If he was smart, he would’ve put his name on it,” Trump said, according to three sources briefed on the exchange. “You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.”

The VIPs’ tour guide for the evening, Mount Vernon president and CEO Doug Bradburn, told the president that Washington did, after all, succeed in getting the nation’s capital named after him. Good point, Trump said with a laugh.

[From Politico]

“You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you.” Says the man who doesn’t know sh-t about why we actually remember people. In his mind, George Washington was a fool who should have branded everything with his name. Mount Washington, Washington Tower, Washington Hotel & Casino, Washington Church, Washington Horse Feed & Supply, Washington Outhouses and more. What a chump, Trump thinks of our first president, the same founding father who won the Revolutionary War and refused to be declared King of America. I weep for what’s become of us.

    OK this too easy
    TRUMP IS A CHUMP
My recommendation for his 2020 campaign slogan

  2. Jerusha says:

Giant suppurating asshole. Friends, Colleagues, feel free to add any other descriptors.

  3. JRenee says:

    I weep with you, smdh

  4. Mia4s says:

What this insecure pile of wet trash fails to realize is that George Washington was so great and so revered that OTHERS named things after him. He never had to. He was admired and adored.

Orange Hitler has to name things after himself because no one with any class would name so much as an overflowing toilet after a Trump.

    • Mash says:

george was SOOOOO great that he pried or had someone else rip the teeth out of his his human chattel and wore them as dentures….he is a terror as are most of the founding fathers.

      • Mia4s says:

And STILL more admired, revered, and adored than Trump ever will be! 😬

Messes with the head doesn’t it? 🤷‍♀️

    • mycomment says:

even funnier… residents of buildings with his name are petitioning to have ‘trump’ removed. it’s already been done in nyc. and just to clarify — he doesn’t actually own many of the properties with his name plastered. it was all a marketing ploy.

    • Agirlandherdog says:

As Washington sings in Hamilton … History has its eyes on you.

And sweet merciful heaven, how I wish we could just brush this period in time under the rug. However, it’s important for future generations to learn about this, so we can stop it from ever happening again.

  5. Melly says:

Now imagine if literally ANY OTHER president or politician said that. The amount of shit they would (rightly) get would be insane. With Trump it’s just yet another stupid comment to add to the list.

  6. Ref7 says:

“You’ve got to put your name on stuff or no one remembers you,” says the man who had to be reminded that Washington, DC is named after George Washington.*

    *Fixed that for you.

    • Alissa says:

Right? Literally our country’s capital and one of the states is named after him, as well as one of our national monuments.

But the difference is he didn’t NEED to put him name on it because other people did it for him because he left such a lasting and impressive legacy.

He’s so mindnumbingly stupid it’s painful.

  7. Tiffany says:

I mean, your name on a house or the capital city of a entire country.

What to chose, what to chose, what to chose…..

  8. minx says:

    I just can’t.

  9. Nikki says:

Some people offered George Washington the title of King in America, and he refused it. He helped safeguard our democracy by refusing to abuse his power. The same can not be said of Trump.

  10. Lightpurple says:

I’m sitting a block away from one of five Washington streets in Boston. When you call 911, you have to tell them which of the five Washington Streets. There’s another Washington St near my home and I know of at least three others in surrounding cities. There’s a big statue of him in Boston Public Garden, that’s probably wearing a Bruins shirt today, and the portrait that adorns the dollar bill spends part of its time at a local museum. That’s his profile on the quarter. A hotel in Cambridge is named Commander for him because he camped across the street. Our capital city is named for him, as are dozens of towns across our country. And an entire state. There are several colleges bearing his name including George Washington University and Washington & Lee. There’s a giant phallic symbol memorializing him on the National Mall.

Washington didn’t have to slap his name on everything, we did it for him.

    • Who ARE These People? says:

And of course you can take the GW Bridge between New Jersey and Manhattan (or try the lower deck – that’s the Martha Washington).

  11. BearcatLawyer says:

GOD ALMIGHTY, JUST SHUT UP, MANGO VOLDEMORT!

I do not think I can last another two years of this so-called presidency. What is worse is that I am not sure I can survive the aftermath either when hopefully this country works hard to repair the damage this idiot and his minions have wrought on the world.

    • Christina says:

      Mango Voldemort! Good one. 😂

    • Alissa says:

I said the other day that we’re only halfway through and then I immediately wanted to cry because it has felt like 8 years already.

      • Snowflake says:

Omg, we have 2 years left?! I can’t live with this for 2 more years. For some reason, i was thinking his term was almost up. It’s only been 2 years???!!!

  12. Rapunzel says:

Tell me again, Republicans, how much this a** loves America? He’d change its name to Trumpland if you let him. This sh*t is literally all he cares about….and money.

  13. Incredulous says:

When he dies, the republicans are gonna try to memoryhole him so fast.

  14. HK9 says:

I can’t. I just can’t. How many more years of this??

  15. megs283 says:

Well, now we know how to get back at him. When this term is done…never speak his name. Pretend to forget him (while working to eradicate his vile policies and right his wrongs). Trump who?

    • whatWHAT? says:

no, even NOW, don’t use his name. it’s why so many (including yours truly) refer to him as “45”.

  16. M.A.F. says:

The man’s face is on money. MONEY ffs. People will remember Trump all right but not for reasons that he so desperately wants.

    • Tiffany says:

I mean, when you spend the first half of your life not paying for anything and the second half only knowing the russian ruble, I mean…….

  17. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I honestly can’t image him ever picking up a book. You know when most of us are trying to learn something, how we bury our noses in literature with a kind of laser focus? Can you in your wildest dreams imagine that piece of sewage engaged in anything remotely similar?

  18. Mel M says:

I can’t stand this anymore! The dems need to get their shit together because I cannot deal with another four years of this monster! I commented yesterday about how we are supposed to go visit my trump loving lunatic in-laws for Easter weekend and last night I saw pictures of them at one of his rally’s complete with maga hats, gear, and buttons that only a misogynistic 13 year old boy could think up about Hilary and Monica sucking. I was up all night thinking about how far gone they are, and how am I supposed to go there now? How can I spend time with people like that? How???? There’s no way that my FIL won’t bring him up, he worships him so much he finds any way to bring him up in conversation. The part that I really can’t stand thinking about is that he will do one of his long winded prayers before Easter dinner and I wouldn’t put it past him to some how fit the moron in on that too. How are you praying to Jesus and then turning around and worshiping this monster?!?! Sorry I’m just super stressed over this now.

    • Diana says:

I can only recommend a lot of wine. I am so sorry that you have to endure this. 😔

      • Mel M says:

That would be my normal go to option when spending time with them but I’m pregnant of course.

      • Diana says:

I know! Busy yourself! Help pick up, do dishes, set the table, make the coffee. Forgot that this is my go-to strategy (in addition tovino of course) for dealing with in-laws. Stay busy so you aren’t stuck in conversations for too long.

Luckily my in-laws dislike trump, but they are hella boring, judgemental and closed minded. Busying Myself gets me off the hook from needing to stay engaged!

    • Kitten says:

Oh FFS they’re going to those psychotic rallies, too? SMDH.
Of course you’re stressing out..that’s stressful AF.

I posted this on the thread yesterday but it was late so not sure if you saw it:
      https://luke.substack.com/p/i-hate-what-theyve-done-to-almost-39f

The intro is a bit weird but if you scroll past you can read dozens of stories from people who lost family members to Fox News Brain.

It could be comforting to commenters who are going through the same thing as you to know that they’re not alone. I honestly cannot recall any other president who has been so successful at destroying families. Sigh.

      • Mel M says:

Yes kitten I did see it late night thank you. It’s amazing and horrifying at the same time how many of us are going through this and feel the same about loosing family members to this cult of thinking. I feel like I could’ve written the price, every word rings true.

That’s the thing, no one worshiped another president like they do this guy. I was just saying to my husband, our parents never acted like this with GWB. He was hardly even discussed as far as I can recall and they were still big Rs back then. I know Reagan wasn’t worshiped like this either. What is it about this guy that has turned these people into rabid rally going, red hat wearing, hating monsters?

    • WineGrrl says:

I think that there is a 24-hour flu epidemic in your town (hint, hint) and/or that your car started making a loud clanking noise right before you had to leave for the visit. Then the main sewer line outside your house clogged, and you are worried that it will back up into the house while you’re gone.

      • Mel M says:

Winegrrl- I just said to my husband i don’t care, we can wait until last minute and say we are all sick.

    • Jerusha says:

Can you manage to throw up at the dining room table when he goes off on one of those tangents? I see you mentioned you’re pregnant, so that would be a good cover. It would serve them right if you could land it on the main course.

    • mycomment says:

this could be dicey… but if he’s such a Christian.. ask him how he could support a lying, scheming, adulterous tax cheat… someone who not only cheats on his ex/current wives; but also cheats hard-working americans out of the payments due them for the work they’ve done on his assorted projects.
has he done his taxes yet? that’s a real moment of clarity for so many trumpsters — who are either not getting anywhere the refund they’ve gotten in the past; or are paying a considerable chunk to the irs.

      • Mel M says:

I would but he is just like trump in that he’s a narcissist that thinks he’s always right and that’s probably one of the reasons he loves him so much. My husband and him have gotten into huge fights before because of this and we’ve gone months without any contact with them and this was years ago. The guy would just spout off Fox News talking points which would be just screaming FAKE NEWS! Last summer when were up there I saw he had the book “The Russian hoax” so there’s seriously no hope at this point. I just can’t believe we are here, how these people go to church every Sunday and come home and plop down in front of Fox News. My husband can’t reconcile it.

      • Snowflake says:

Oh, Mel, I know! My mom is a Christian who loves Trump. I said how can you support someone who had an affair with a p0rn star? I said you guys were upset about Bill and Monica! She goes, that was in the OVAL office? Besides, how do we know Obama didn’t have an affair with a p0rn star?! Smdh 🤯

    • whatWHAT? says:

oh Mel M, for your own mental and physical (due to being preggo) well-being, I suggest you don’t go.

and, honestly, you wouldn’t even have to lie. just tell them you’d worry about the health of your baby if you had to listen to their support of the fascist in the WH. don’t allow them to have that over you. block their calls, block them on social media. if your hubs can’t do that to his own family, I’d understand, but you really owe them nothing.

either that or take Jerusha’s advice and spew all over. though, I’d throw up ON one of them instead of the main course, but the main course would be pretty good to. good luck, and stay strong.

    • Lilly (with the double-L) says:

I feel for you. Often I forget that people have family and friends on the other side, which I don’t have to suffer. Adding that to the this entire mess and undercutting of the constitution, democracy, etc., etc. would be so difficult without supportive/sane family – while pregnant too! Put yourself first, if possible. I know that’s probably not much help. Best wishes.

    • JadedBrit says:

@Mel M You must put yourself first and look after yourself and your unborn child first. Distress you undeservedly experience as a result of such profound asshattism will communicate itself to your baby. Trump and his misogynist band of horrors should not have the literal ability to affect your uterus. If you can’t request an embargo on all political subjects as you do not want to be upset at such a delicate time, I’d back out all together (if I were you). Tactfully but resolutely, make it implicit that you will not be able to accept that which causes you unhappiness and tension. Honesty is the best policy: if your father in law cannot understand, then that – much like his deplorable MAGA beliefs – is on him.
      Be well, both of you.

    • Juls says:

Oh Mel, I feel you. I really do. What I do, when faced with these older-generation family members, is smile and nod. While reminding myself that my children will be replacing them at the voting booth once they are gone from this earth, and there is NOTHING they can do about it. My children will not be influenced by their insanity, they will be influenced by ME and science and facts and logic. These older Trumpers will not have any say in politics from beyond the grave, but my enlightened offspring WILL. It gives me hope. And a slight sense of satisfaction that Trumpers are not the majority, they just happen to be the loudest and most obnoxious right now. And they thrive off of fear. They know that people in your situation fear screaming back at them, because once you do, there will be a familial rift. A rift that they will blame on YOU.

    • Shannon says:

I have some Trump relatives, and all I can tell you is those mini-bottles of vodka (like airplane bottles are easy to hide). Fair warning: they also have backfired on me and now my half-sister and I will probably never speak again LOL

    • Darla says:

I’m so sorry. You should not have to deal with this while pregnant. Can you get out of it?

I’ve been going to therapy for just this. And it’s helping. Other than that lord knows I have no advice. I have been unable to handle it. I had to actually get professional help.

  19. mycomment says:

jhc… presumably, he’s been driven across the gwb a few million times.. oh wait. he’s likely confused and doesn’t know that the gwb is shorthand for George Washington Bridge.
goddamn, he’s is so friggin stupid.

not to mention that Washington had more important issues on his mind than personal branding…

  20. line says:

it is the only nationalist leader who ignores the history of his country.

  21. Ann says:

Sometimes some of the stuff Trump says pings my memories of my days as a College Republican when I was in my early 20s, just before the 08′ election. I think of the people I knew then, many of whom are now MAGAts, and feel, just, strange. Back then was the time of the Tea Party and they would be freaking out if any public figure had the gall to talk shit about a founding father. Now… well we all know how it is now.

Side note: I really, REALLY hope Trump slips up and says some ish about Saint Reagan. I know it won’t amount to anything major but I still think it’d be fun to watch the deplorables twist in the wind over that. Wingnut morons don’t have a raging boner for Washington like they do for Reagan so at the very least you might get some legit discomfort out of the base.

  22. FluffyPrincess says:

Yeah, no one is going to remember Washington. Let’s not forget a whole STATE is named. . .Washington. Our nation’s capital, currency, countless streets, Schools, buildings, bridges, The George Washington UNIVERSITY in DC. . .

And yet, people think he’s doing a great job…

I swear, someone f’d up and put us in that alternate Space/Time Continuum from Back to the Future 2 where Biff Tannen is running things. . .and everything in Hilldale goes to sh**.

  23. Louisa says:

He is correct. His name will be remembered in infamy along with napoleon and other treacherous leaders. His grandkids will suffer with that last name in the future. His own kids are lost causes who are too stupid and greedy to understand how history will look upon them

  24. Nina says:

George .. who? I don’t know this Washington fellow you speak of. If only he had put his name on some stuff.

  25. JadedBrit says:

I suppose being the first President and the first to sign the Constitution of the United States just isn’t enough for some ‘people’.

  26. Shannon says:

I remember when I was in middle school I visited Washington D.C. for the first time, and I’ve visited several times since. But that first time, I went with my family, we saw the sights and went on the White House tour. And I remember getting lots of books from the gift shop and just really being fascinated with our nation’s capitol, like this sense of awe and pride. Not in a white nationalist, hug a flag type of way, but just proud and happy about my country. And now it’s such a shit storm and so fkn embarrassing. This administration just hurts on a soul level in so many ways.

  27. Veronica says:

Man, the level of narcissistic insecurity that statement reveals is remarkable.

  28. BigGuy says:

Nearly every survey that asks historians to rank Presidents always has George Washington as first. Why? It is NOT because he was a great statesman or a great speaker. It is because he knew he would be setting precedents as President. The greatest precedent he established was leaving office at the end of his term. And just behind that, he refused honors again and again so he could serve his country. And what all historians agree about Washington is that he had the strongest character of any of our presidents.
