Angelina Jolie’s ‘Maleficent: Mistress of Evil’ teaser trailer is here & it’s awesome

mal2

Maleficent is a queen, right? She’s Queen of the Forest, Queen of the Woodland Creatures, something like that. The first Maleficent movie was rather unexpectedly great – a mother-daughter story in which Maleficent only became mean because she was drugged and assaulted (her wings were cut off). She plotted to destroy Princess Aurora but ended up falling for Aurora and wanting to protect her. It’s a Disney movie, the plot doesn’t have to make perfect sense, really. Anyway, Maleficent became one of the biggest movies of Angelina’s career, and Disney approached her to make a second one. She filmed it in England last year. Maleficent: Mistress of Evil was originally set for a 2020 release, but they pushed it up for an October release. And I’m so happy! Here’s the first trailer:

Now THIS is camp. It looks like so much fun! I love Angelina’s Maleficent laugh and her amazing horns and what looks like an Elie Saab Mistress of Evil cocktail dress. Michelle Pfeiffer looks like she had a ball playing Queen Ingrith too. This sequel also has Ed Skrein and… Chiwetel Ejiofor, which I CANNOT wait. Oh, and Sam Riley is back as Diaval, her crow/human/helper. He was wonderful in the first movie.

Meanwhile, the casting is coming together for Angelina’s next Disney film, or should I say Marvel film, The Eternals – in addition to Chloe Zhao as director and Kumail Nanjiani in a supporting role, reportedly Richard Madden is in talks to play the other lead role opposite Angelina. Hm…

I don’t get it. Who is this film for? Too scary for kids, too childish for adults.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

No it’s not. If that were the case the first one wouldn’t have made as much money as it did. People took their kids to see it and they will take them to see this one. And as anasult I can say that I enjoyed the first film amd am looking forward to this one.

    • ojulia123 says:

Oh, well. Count this childish adult in for one ticket, please.

    • Jess says:

      It’s for me.

  2. Michelle says:

It’s not scary for kids. They said that about the first maleficent & yet kids absolutely loved it. Just in time for Halloween, so lots of little Maleficents trick or treating again. Love it!

  3. V says:

Was Michelle Pfeiffer in the first film? I am in just for Michelle and Angelina in the same movie! I didn’t really care for the first one but this looks so much better. Will try to rewatch the first one.

  4. Mia4s says:

I really didn’t like the first Maleficent, but Jolie was great in it (far better than the movie deserved). Hopefully this one has better writers. I’m at least interested.

I rolled my eyes at the Richard Madden casting rumour (Marvel movies cast another white male main hero before a single Asian or Latino main male hero. Major side-eye). But then I remembered the rumour about the casting for one of the Eternals male leads seeking an openly gay actor. Huh. And the paparazzi pictures of Madden walking around L.A. with the same guy. Huh. Well now this is interesting.

I thought it was just awful. I was so excited to get a deliciously evil Angie ft the Leg of Doom, and then we got…that. My big issue was the main message which seemed to me to be, “See this evil, wild woman? She and her anger against the men who wronged her can be tamed by motherhood!”. YIKES.

I won’t see this in theaters, maybe when it’s free to watch on an Amazon Prime channel.

  5. Seraphina says:

I loved the first one. Loved the twist that true love takes many forms. And yes, true love is a mother and child.

And I agree!!! Lots of little Maleficents will be awesome for Halloween. Can’t wait.

    • Carol says:

I loved the first one too! It’s my favorite Angelina Jolie movie and it wasn’t really too scary for kids either (some parts I could see being a little scary for kids). But everything worked in the first movie including the casting, music (Lana del Rey!)and costumes.

The trailer for the sequel, however, is underwhelming. That cocktail dress Maleficent is wearing looks ridiculous, the music sounds generic, and I don’t even get what the movie is about. I wish I saw more Michelle Pfieffer in the trailer. I really hope the sequel is hell of a lot better than its trailer.

      • Snowslow says:

So agree with you. The movie did not really deserve a cheap sequel like this one. The first one was perfection, with a nice storyline that did not involve men and great music. This one… meh.

  6. Lucy2 says:

I’m sure it will do well, but to be honest I fell asleep during the first one, never went back to finish it. I’m not much of a fan of her as an actress anyway.
It is good to see Michelle Pfeiffer doing more work though.

  7. Seri says:

That looks promising! I would pay money to see it in the cinema

  8. tempest prognosticator says:

    This looks fun. I’m in!

  9. Valiantly Varnished says:

    This looks so fun!

  10. anp says:

The film will be a Blockbuster.

  11. Michelle says:

Its good to see three main female characters while the men are more background.

  12. Lucy says:

Sam Riley is back? YASSS. Why oh why is he not in more stuff???

  13. Truth hurts says:

This is my b##ch. Michelle P hopefully makes her give her best evil. From the trailer it seems the table scene sets the storm. It looks like Aurora takes Ingriths side and Maleficent goes to all our war. I think Queen Ingrith is trying to manipulate Aurora and steal her kingdom and she doesn’t see it. Will be fantastic and looks to be better than the first. This b is fierce in that final scene.

  14. Myrtle says:

I hope Maleficent (first installment) will be released on Netflix or HBO before October, so everyone can watch or rewatch it, and get caught up.

    • Emilia says:

Not likely. Disney’s streaming service launches next fall and there’s no way there are going to want their content available on any competitors.

    • whatWHAT? says:

hasn’t it already been on a pay service? one of the premium movie channels? I didn’t see it in the theaters but I know I’ve seen parts of it…

    • Eden75 says:

It’s on Netflix Canada right now.

  15. Magster says:

I so wanted to hate this movie because not a big fan of Jolie. But I was surprisingly enamored by it. Jolie was meant to play characters with a tortured soul. Will definitely see the sequel. Also I saw nothing scary about the movie.

  16. Case says:

I loved the first one, so I’m excited for this.

  17. sommolierlady says:

The first movie was one of the first times I really liked Jolie in a film. I thought she nailed it. Don’t really see a reason to continue the story but I’m sure it will make buckets of money.

  18. Sidewithkids says:

This is gonna be great. I agree about showcasing three women as the leads while the men are in the background. Love that. Well done, again, Disney. Also, it feels like this is preparing fans for Sersi, Angie playing that role. That last scene was like, “Alright Angie, you can get it”. Lol. Amazing.

Richard Madden’s gonna have to get use to those cameras especially if he’s gonna be in a Marvel movie and work w/ Angie. Guaranteed there will be rumors about them dating and/or they’ll date even tho I don’t know if Angie would date someone younger in her rl. I’m Just really happy Angie is back and coming to big screens again soon.

  19. Nibbi says:

I wasn’t crazy about the goofball writing of the first one tho just seeing her reprise those fabulous witchy costumes, as well as seeing Michelle Pfeiffer in a movie, will help me get thru the coming post-GoT period 😉

  20. Dee Kay says:

This trailer plays up the dark-scary-goth vibes but the Maleficent universe is definitely not too scary for kids, at least in my experience. My niece, who thought Penguins of Madagascar was too scary, loved Maleficent beyond belief. Loved loved loved it, asked to watch it again and again. My nephew also loved it!! Easily identified with the all-female cast. They both really got the message (which Maleficent says about herself at the end) that Maleficent is both the villain and the hero. I thought it would be too complex for them but nope, they got that the lesson is we all have some good and some evil in us and when given the choice, we should go with our instincts to do good, even if our instinct to do bad things feels justified (like getting revenge on someone who wronged us). Love trumps hate. Can’t wait for the sequel!

  21. Poppy says:

    Can’t wait

  22. Hmmm says:

Yasssss! It looks great and I think she’s gonna be a little evil in this one because queen Michelle is going to take her princess and marry her off to her son.

Chiwetel is supposed to be her love interest in this movie 😍😍😍😍 they seemed to have got on well because they attend each other’s events now.

    • Tiffany says:

Where is my Salt 2, damnit. That has been in pre production purgatory forever now. What happened?

  23. Eve says:

Absolutely LOVE Jolie’s (or Maleficent’s) cackle.

Will watch this one. I miss seeing her in front of the cameras.

    The poster is gorgeous.
