Keegan-Michael Key started acting in high school thanks to an inspiring teacher

Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele team up again on Toy Story 4. They play plush animals who are prizes in a carnival game, and they’re so funny together. I saw it over the weekend and loved it so much. Toy Story is one of the rare franchises that remains exceptionally good up until the end. (Although Pixar films are typically better than Dreamworks, the sequels can fall flat, e.g. Cars. Incredibles 2 and Finding Dory held up though.) Key and Peele have been friends since meeting in 2002 while working at Second City in Chicago. They had their show together, which aired on Comedy Central from 2012 to 2015, and Peele has since gone on to be a wildly successful horror movie writer/director, with Get Out and Us. Key was on Access Live and he got asked a lot of questions about his friend and whether he knew that Peele was into horror. He gushed about him and was so happy for his success, it was fun to watch.

On Peele winning the Academy Award for Best Screenplay
He worked on Get Out for 8 years and he rewrote the script numerous times. It was such a well-deserved award. It’s nice when that happens. My cup overfloweth. To have a partner like that, who cares so much about their work. I couldn’t restrain myself.

On if he knew that Peele loved horror and was dark
Still waters run deep on the surface. They churn underneath. There’s a lot of sea life underneath there. Jordan is a horror connoisseur. His first piece of criticism he ever learned was from his grandmother. [She] took him to see Garbage Pail Kids when he was a little boy. [She said] ‘I just want you to understand, that’s a horrible movie.’

“As a kid what were you like?”
I was a painfully shy kid. I didn’t try out for the school plays until a really inspiring teacher in high school grabbed me and said ‘you’re doing this’ when I was a freshman. I started doing shows from there.

On the new Lion King movie
I’m in it and I can’t get my head wrapped around the fact that Beyonce’s playing Nahla.

[From Access Live]

It’s great to see how excited he is for Peele’s successes. This interview was a lot of fun. That story about how his teacher encouraged him to act moved me! Jonathan Banks (Mike on Breaking Bad) told a similar story on Fresh Air about how a teacher encouraged him to try out for the school play and it changed his life. We owe teachers so much.

Here’s the interview! Part 2 is here. That’s well worth watching too because he does some hilarious impressions.

As a teacher (since 1986), I am happy to see something positive said about us; especially when it comes from a celebrity. I applaud him for saying a teacher is an inspiration.

      As a teacher since 2004, I agree.

I also want to say to you: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE LAST 33 YEARS!!! That is an incredible achievement.

      • Jane says:

Awe… you’re so sweet to say that. THANK YOU for contributing to education for 15 years! 🙂

I’m surprised by how well Toy Story 4 did critically, because I thought it was clearly worse than the other 3. Not bad. It was really funny. KMK and Jordan in particular were a hilarious duo. But the plot felt much sloppier than the others. And Buzz was so irrelevant in this movie!

It was a fine movie and I’m sure it’ll do great in the box office, but it did feel like an unnecessary stretch of the story.

    • Nina says:

Part of me wondered if they minimized Buzz’s role because Tim Allen is such a problematic jerk and they don’t want to work with him any more than they have to.

He is he best!!! He’s family friends with a friend of mine and he is truly a lovely man. Never anything negative said about him by anyone. Detroit is so proud of him!

Keegan-Michael and Jordan are today’s George and Gracie.

Aw, I just watched the episode of Parks and Recreation he appeared in. He played a music/drama teacher who is polite and helpful and amazing and encouraging. I bet he based that on the teacher who inspired him.

I loved his character on P&R!

I’ve liked him in everything I’ve seen him in, but especially Playing House, which was such a cute show, I miss it.

Apparently KMK and I were at the same university at the same time, but I don’t remember every meeting him (it’s a HUGE school).

I loved Playing House too! That was such a positively funny show. I wish they would bring it back in reruns. Love those women.
