Sam Smith dances in his music video for ‘How Do You Sleep’ and it’s amazing

Katy Perry unveils her new shoe collection at Macy's

I know that we’re focused so heavily on Cats, Top Gun and Blue Ivy Carter today, but spare a moment for Sam Smith, because he ALSO dropped a new music video today. Sam released the video for “How Do You Sleep.” I know this isn’t the most popular opinion around here, but I really like Sam Smith. I like his music and I like him as a celebrity/artist. Sam’s music videos are not heavy on Sam’s looks or dance movies or anything like that. Either his videos star actors, or the videos are just Sam in a location, singing to camera, or posing somewhere as he sings. But Sam decided to mix it up for “How Do You Sleep.” He decided to DANCE. He attempted choreography! He hired professional dancers to dance with him. And the result is… great?

Honestly, I love it. I laughed a few times just because it was so cute to see Sam feeling himself as he swishes his hips and does old-school Madonna-esque hand-and-arm choreography. I love that Sam’s costume is basically a sheer Liz Claiborne blouse and early ‘90s trousers. I love how you can see the influences from Madonna and Lady Gaga, and I imagine that Sam’s childhood was full of dreams of being able to perform like this, dance like this, have fun like this. This is my new Friday obsession: watching Sam feel himself. Also, I love the way he looks these days. He looks healthy and like he’s found a way to have a good relationship with food and fitness. The song is great too!

I honestly don’t get the hype around this guy.

    • Um says:

He’s a singer with a good voice and a unique sound. People like that.

      • Xi Tang says:

He’s got a great voice but kinda soulless. I feel the same about Adele. Don’t kill me!

    • SuperNova says:

Honestly, it looks like he has copied a Beyonce video with everyone of her moves. Everyone loves to borrow from black women but not give any credit and he will be isolated from criticism due to his sexuality.

      • Dani says:

Lady Gaga has an almost identical video from Born This Way, just she’s half naked. Go call her out first.

    • Yes Doubtful says:

I loved his first album, but everything since has been mediocre.

    • Nibbi says:

Like, he has the voice of an angel.

Not even kidding, his voice makes me shmoopy, it’s so gorgeous.

Plus he himself seems really sweet, mellow, and funny.

I’ve enjoyed watching his success. He’s not a faker and he’s not a diva, he just sings %ù£$µ* well.

I totally agree with you! I love Sam Smith and this video! You can tell he had a lot of fun with it!

  3. lucy2 says:

LOL at the Kylo Ren comment.

  4. Dewdrop says:

i love it. i love the video and i love the song.

    good 👏🏽 for 👏🏽 him.

i know this song is about cheating, but it resonated so deeply with me because the father of my 6 week old baby is a heroin addict. and when i was 7 months pregnant, i found out he was hiding a year long addiction from me. maybe i’m naive, but i honestly didn’t know what to look for, i’ve never done drugs. after he overdosed when i kicked him out, i had to have him put on an involuntary hold. he had to be detoxed from coke, methadone, heroin and xanax. obviously i’m still healing from it, but this song hit the nail on the head.

    • LNG says:

Wow Dewdrop that is rough. New babies are hard enough on their own without all of the extra heavy stuff you are dealing with. Do you have family/friend support? I’m sending good vibes your way, you can get through this! Make sure you take time to take care of yourself too, if you can.

    • Xi Tang says:

Dewdrop this sounds heavy. I wish you well. Sending you lots of support!

    • NessaBee says:

Oh Dewdrop that sucks. Good for you for being so strong and protecting yourself and your child! Sending love your way!

    • Lindy says:

Oh, Dewdrop, that’s heartbreakingly hard when you’re dealing with a new baby especially. Do your best to take care of yourself, lean on your friends, focus on your little one as much as you can.

    • Nibbi says:

whoa! as the French say, ‘ courage !’
i wish you all the best & all power to you.

  5. Lawcatb says:

I was cheesing the whole time I was watching this. I’ve never paid much attention to him, but this is a great video.

  6. Tiffany says:

    I liked it.

  7. broodytrudy says:

Oh i LOVE him. What a great video. Taylor Swift should take dancing lessons from him.

  8. ds says:

omg after reading the julia styles article i actually watched some parts of save the last dance and sam totally got similar chair moves and it’s too cute! props to him feeling it

  9. Mab's A'Mabbin says:

Not bad! But my favorite song is currently that song from the Absentia trailer. Walk All Over Me. Can’t get enough.

  10. Kealeen says:

I’m getting through a bad breakup, and I needed this song and video SO MUCH. Sam Smith is a gift and a joy. I remember seeing him perform for the first time on US TV with Disclosure on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, and you could feel his nervous excitement. I want nothing but good things for Sam Smith.

  11. TQ says:

OMG, I love this! Really love that Sam Smith is mixing it up this time. And so glad to see him looking so confident and just owning it. Keep it up, Sam!

  12. NessaBee says:

I’m an old heterosexual married lady and it does my heart good to see LGBT artists like Sam be able to express themselves freely and not have to have female sexy dancers or pretend his songs are about girlfriends. Hooray for equality and freedom of expression!

  13. Lala11_7 says:

Sam has that wonderful bombastic voice that REALLY needs a GREAT PRODUCER to push him to the limit…or it CAN sound a bit…empty to me…

Bae introduced me to Sam a couple of years before he hit it big…because Bae is addicted to watching BBC Live on YouTube which showcases so many unheard of gems nd Bae is STILL addicted to finding the next “big” thing from his decades in the music business…….and MY GAWD…Sam on those live shows…in the booth…just singing his SOUL OUT! It is AMAZING!

I know getting out there and dancing wasn’t easy for him…which is why I SALUTE HIM!

    • Nibbi says:

Those BBC Live clips on YouTube are amazing.
I’m addicted to the ones he did as well as London Grammar covering Beyoncé

  14. Denise biggs says:

Sams new track and video is great. Got so much sole. Love it. Xxx
