Angelina Jolie covers Elle, writes essay about witches, maleficence & power

Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex attends The Invictus Games 2020 launch

I could feel it coming: I felt like Angelina Jolie would do a big promotional push for Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. I thought we would end up with a Vogue cover, perhaps the October issue (which would line up well for the release of the film). But it looks like Angelina was interested in a September cover! Which is how she ended up on the September issue of Elle Magazine, and I believe all of the international editions of Elle. Would you like some joy today? Go and look through this amazing photoshoot – the biggest headline, to me, is that Angelina happily posed with her sons’ dogs: “a Rottweiler and a pit mix chosen as puppies from a shelter by her eldest sons.” They look like big, protective dogs, like they follow Angelina around because she feeds them people-food and likes to snuggle.

As for the interview… there’s not an interview. Angelina is going the “I’ll just write my own cover story, thanks” route and Elle allowed it. Angelina’s essay is very interesting though – it’s all about Maleficence and witchcraft and free-thinking women. You can read the full piece here. Here’s the first part:

What is it about the power of a woman free in mind and body that has been perceived as so dangerous throughout history? In the past, the Old Testament command “Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” was taken literally. Tens of thousands of people were executed for maleficia, the alleged crime of evil deeds through magic, from the witch hunts in Europe to the Salem trials in America. The vast majority of these were women.

Like the ultimate conspiracy theory, anything you couldn’t explain—from a crop failing to a child falling ill—could be put down to the influence of a supposedly wicked woman. These were often destitute widows, eking out an existence as healers on the fringes of society, or younger women whose seductive powers could easily be attributed to magic. Women could be accused of witchcraft for having an independent sex life, for speaking their mind on politics or religion, or for dressing differently. Had I lived in earlier times, I could have been burnt at the stake many times over for simply being myself.

The accusation of witchcraft has been used to control and silence women in almost all societies and in every century. Joan of Arc was put to death by fire in fifteenth-century France for idolatry and heresy, including wearing men’s clothing. The initial charges against her included witchcraft, and she was accused of dancing near a fairy tree at night—textbook witchy behavior.

…It is startling how often women who run for political office in democratic countries are described as witches. Bring together a group of strong women, and before too long someone will brand them a “coven”—the technical term, to be clear, for a gathering of witches meeting at night to consort with the devil. Women who stand up for human rights in many countries are still labeled “deviant,” “bad mothers,” “difficult,” or “loose.”

[From Elle]

Jolie ends her piece with this: “If that is wickedness, then the world needs more wicked women.” YES. Wicked women of the world unite. Replace wicked with “nasty” and that was the whole f–king 2016 election. The crux of the election was that so many voters thought Donald Trump was an unhinged bigot but at least he wasn’t a wicked/nasty woman. Anyway, I would have preferred an interview from Jolie but hey, if magazines are going to allow her to write her own cover stories, I’m not complaining.

Love it! I love her bounce back game.

  2. Pixie says:

That was cute, I think she is also actively aiming towards expanding her young Disney fanbase, which makes perfect sense! She also mentions how when women with strong political ambitions gets together they are quickly called a ‘coven’ and ‘witches’, and that is totally a dig at Pitt! I remember he encouraged all those articles calling her and her friends that worked in the London parliament a ‘witches coven’, last year.

    • Sierra says:

You are right that she is trying to empower young girls as well.

That is why she is also co producing the tv series with Microsoft for BBC. That is a series just for young girls across the globe.

    • OSLO says:

She also mentions how when women with strong political ambitions gets together they are quickly called a ‘coven’ and ‘witches’, and that is totally a dig at Pitt!
@Pixie i am glad she said this

  3. JoJo says:

    Beautiful Pics
In family related news I just read Maddox will be attending a university in South Korea at People.Com.

  4. Sierra says:

She looks absolutely gorgeous in those pictures.

What she said is very empowering and the truth. The one line that stood out for me was:

“Why is so much energy expended to keep women in a secondary position?”

This all day long, why are men spending so much time and money to keep us down? What are they so scared of?

  5. TheOriginalMia says:

Her face is unreal. She looks amazing! Cute doggies. They probably are very protective of her and the other kids.

    • OSLO says:

That face is drop dead gorgeous arguably the best in the world.
I love the pictures of her and the dogs

  6. Valiantly Varnished says:

That second cover is beautiful and simple. And the essay sounds amazing as well. I love her leaning into the “Maleficient” title. Yasss Evil Queen.
And she’s right – if being a strong outspoken woman of courage and conviction is wicked then we need more of those type of women ij the world.

  7. Wyatt says:

    She’s back with a bang🤗🤗🤗

  8. Hmmm says:

The q&a parts are pretty cool, too. LoL when asked if she preferred The Rolling Stones or the Beatles she says THE CLASH!!

She seems to be at a really good place right now.

I think she doesn’t want to do a normal interview because we know what they’ll ask and she doesn’t want to answer that b.s about her ex husband. Good for her.

  9. Hmmm says:

Maddox is 18 today and it was revealed he’s going to college in Korea for biochemistry

  10. Hmmm says:

This also reminds me of how when she filed for divorce her ex went to the sun to call her two British friends witches lol

    • Sidewithkids says:

@Hmmm, lol, Brad stans will totally hate this for many unstable reasons but especially b/c you know they blame those two women (her friends) for his issues insteading of blaming the person that should be blamed, him. Also, they’re under some delusion that Angie doesn’t hang w/ them anymore and she totally does. She even writes (shields and protects) about them, plus one of the women just tweeted the article out. It’s just another bonus on why I love the article tho.

      • truthhurts says:

The fact that he complained about Aniston and her relationship with her friends seems that he wants all the attention and wants to seclude his family off from the world. I also remember his team saying she didn’t want kids as an excuse for him leaving her. That is his MO! Put all the blame on someone else.
Angelina is not a homebody as she explained. And as the world sees his time with his kids are secluded away at his compound in LA. That is being private to him and his fans. Holding teenagers in one spot, building everything they need there so they won’t go out into the world without him.

  11. Tiffany says:

    Stunning. Just. Stunning.

  12. OSLO says:

YAY!!!!! THANK YOU JOLIE FOR GIVING US THIS!!!!
This line stood out for me in the her essay:
‘Had I lived in earlier times, I could have been burnt at the stake many times over for simply being myself”.
I feel her hair as she is not far away from the truth

  13. TRuthhurts says:

Angelina has came out in the last three days with a vengeance and imho took the air out of the publicity Pitt train.
In other news I just love the fact she wrote her own words. That whole VF shing ding left a nasty premeditated taste in my mouth.
I love the space she is in right now. I think she is even freakin stronger if that is possible. Whatever she has been reading, doing, listening too the last two yrs certainly agree with her.
I love that she loves her freedom.
I love the fact that some women down her, yet she still stands strong for their rights.
I love the way she responds always positively and eloquently to gossip and hatred towards her for being different.
I love her strength and resilience.
Truth is she knows her power and uses it positively.
    The most important part.
I often tell my daughters that the most important thing they can do is to develop their minds. You can always put on a pretty dress, but it doesn’t matter what you wear on the outside if your mind isn’t strong. There is nothing more attractive—you might even say enchanting—than a woman with an independent will and her own opinions.

With love to all the wicked women, and the men who understand them. —Angelina

  14. OSLO says:

This woman is drop dead gorgeous and she knows how to pose for the camera i am just glad she is going to be gracing my screen again. I cant believe this woman has only acted in two movies since 2010 wow just wow.

    • Hmmm says:

The best thing about the brangelina divorce is that angie will be working more and be in more movies. Yay

  15. Jennifer says:

With every move she makes, I admire her more.

  16. BB says:

I saw on People.com that her son turned 18 today. What the hell? Time flies! I remember when he was a kid being dropped off by Jolie to school and now he’s going to college for biochemistry. I feel so old!

I love the photo of her with the plane.

    • Hmmm says:

Yep. I remember her haters saying she wasn’t giving her kids a proper education and now Maddox is going to one of the most prestigious schools in South Korea.

      • Lady D says:

…and when he graduates, the detractors will state unequivocally that she bought his degree for him.

      • Karen says:

It is ranked 200-250 th in world rankings. I heard he wanted to attend NYU Tisch School of the Arts for film which is where my daughter graduated from. Very competitive to attend. I am surprised he is not going there. Changed his mind or did not get accepted.

  17. Otaku fairy... says:

The things she said in that article are so true and apply to so many women and girls in so many different ways. This essay was perfect.

  18. Sidewithkids says:

    YASSSSSSSS

I wondered how Angie would address all the unnecessary hate and lies she endures. She did it here beautifully. I love she didn’t just sit for a full on interview yet she wrote this which is poignant and brilliant and true. But also she turned the hate and maligned namecalling around to fit great women. Like “yeah, I am wicked, so what?, being wicked is amazing. You should try it.” Lol.

Sidenote: Angie is super smart. She sitting around researching witches. We need a reading list from her immediately.

Another Sidenote: I imagine her w/ her daughters, reading, playing w/ all those animals and laughing at vapid people.

    • truthhurts says:

That is true. She is supersmart and beautiful. That justifies the hate and jealousy to those envious people. Therefore let us magnify every mistake she has ever made and twist into she is this evil, devilish homewrecking whatever.
What home did she wreck? The only man she ever dated that was going through a divorce is Pitt. Dern and Thorton weren’t married and was revealed their relationship was toast. Dern came out with that lie because she was upset. Plus she was the one in a relationship with Thorton when he was married and according to his exwife stopped him from seeing his kids. But when he got with Angie she encouraged it and loved them as they were hers. F###k the liars and haters.

      • AmberRed says:

I don’t know about Pitt but Dern definitely was not toast with BBT. How do I know this? Oprah advised Dern to sue BBT and she successfully sued or settled for something like 600K because she’d sold her house and uprooted herself and missed out on career opportunities for him (she was committed to the Cate Blanchett role in The Gift, which he wrote for her and then had to recast when they broke up), until he did a sudden, “It’s not me, it’s you.” Haha. Who knows, maybe their relationship was toast but she certainly didn’t know it.

  19. lily says:

She is looking great, a little to thin but great. She is a beautiful and interesting woman that always dos incredible covers for magazine. And she is a hard-worker, no matter if she is promoting her fiction movie or a cause with UNICEF she is always doing her best. Great example not only for women but for human being.

And I love is a Elle issue, i think is the better magazine right now for a smart woman like her. Vogue is just so bring lately (except for British edition who have been doing a great job since is in good hands, including the september issue) and Harper Bazaar is a joke, writing and trying to sell the ambassadors for their sponsors.

  20. harlequin says:

    She’s absolutely phenomenal.

  21. Talie says:

This is why I can’t really support magazines anymore. I can’t remember the last time I bought one. They’re actively killing their own product. I miss a proper celebrity profile…who wants to read another essay or celeb interviewing celeb. Angelina used to be the most fascinating interview on the planet. She probably still could be.

    • Hmmm says:

Seriously? I think the fact that she wrote her own article is amazing and the topic she chose is great too. The typical celeb profile is boring and she’s done that a million times. Go read some of her older interviews where she’s profiled if you need that . I can’t imagine we’d learn anything new from a profile type interview with Angelina Jolie… I mean unless you want to read about her divorce. SNOOZE FEST!

    • truthhurts says:

Well if you don’t want to read an article outlining how women are disrespected or how she is speaking out on their behalf then baby I don’t know what you want to hear from her. Her not speaking about her love life or divorce is the best interview ever. I stopped listening or reading her interviews when she was married to Pitt because all she did was talk about him and prop him up and it came back to bite her. She had stopped talking about what she loved and about herself. She centered on him and the kids. I love she has moved past that stage and is spitting real knowledge and power. We need this as women now.

      • Sidewithkids says:

@truthhurts, there’s nothing like Angie in love. She always speaks great things about the people she loves. I think it came back to bite her b/c she loved him and wanted their relationship to work. Then he turned on her or should I say everything he said and promised to her turned into something he couldn’t keep up and maintain. He became jealous and stifling. (She’s always talking about being free/her freedom now). That can’t be by coincidence. She clearly felt trapped by the end of their marriage. He also clearly chose HW over family. Which is the wrong choice and clearly not the choice Angie chose. The only reason Angie’s acting again is b/c she’s the breadwinner and b/c her haters said she couldn’t and that’s makes her strong but I believe if they were still together, she would be doing her humanitarian/political work more and taking care of the family. Family is everything imo and Angie feels the same way.

  22. ad says:

    Smart & beautiful!

  23. SilentStar says:

I’ve never actively been a fan of hers, but dayum, she has really been killing it lately! Great article, incredible photos. I like her now more than ever.

  24. Kay says:

She appeared in a Rolling Stones video and has been rumoured to have had a relationship with Mick Jagger.

    • truthhurts says:

This is sad. For you to say she appeared but had an alleged affair with Jagger is just what she referenced to. Pitts camp had no right to blame her friends for her decision to leave him. He said the same things about Aniston telling her friends about their problems. He is the problem and I don’t think her friends with Dalton and Helic would lead her to do something that significant. Her politics I believe is her trying to work with the UN and use her status to bring light atrocities around the world. That is not a problem. The things she can help with financially she does. So what more do you wand her to do. She is only one woman.

    • crogirl says:

So? Who cares about the alleged affair when she was in her early twenties.
      I love this photoshoot.

    • AmberRed says:

She most definitely did. She went on holidays with him but it wasn’t a serious thing. It was more to appease her mother, who was a huge fan and wanted them married. Jagger shagged anything whilst “married” anyway.

    • OriginalCarol says:

It’s all hearsay and rumored, just like all the rumors about Pitt having some orgies with the Russian girls while on a movie set blah blah. Jagger was infatuated with Jolie for 2 years and kept calling/begging her to go on the tour trips with him, hoping that she would go out with him eventually. She did make a couple of trips to appease her meddling mother Bertrand but wasn’t impressed with him at all. I wouldn’t call it an affair at all.

On the side note, Pitt is a narcissistic jerk who can never stand that his woman of the moment won’t focus all her attention on him. He wants to be the center of their life. Once he got with Jolie, he started cutting out all her people starting with her security people and such. He wanted Jolie to be dependent on him only and she did for a while until he started hitting on their son. That’s when her eyes were wide open and started to recognize the abusive signs. It’s sad that when you love someone so much that you are willing to overlook certain things and accept the things that they do to you are ‘normal’ when in fact they are not! All I can say is it’s great that she stopped living a lie with the jerk and pretending everything was fine. For a while she sounded like a perfect Stepford wife and it’s pretty sad seeing it happen right in front of our eyes.

  25. Kay says:

Like I said I don’t agree with everything she has written. You can behave as you please if you have white privilege, but you cannot if you don’t.

I am actually concerned about her politics, I think she does have a dig at Pitt with the witches article, but the political women who were targeted may have had an input in writing this as they are members of the Tory party and I believe she has set up a charity with them and they work for her. The polices the women are linked with increase inequalities and child poverty. If they have something to say they should write something themselves and not use Jolie.

    • Sidewithkids says:

@Kay, well I understand where you are coming from. Certainly white privilege allows people much more than w/o it but honestly any woman of any color can do and say what they want. They just have to do it and say it and understand the world we live in when they do. Angie is trying to say that too. Staying up is hard when you know you will be persecuted. Like witches. Women of color can be “wicked” but yes they will face more persecution than white women. Certainly. But that should not stop women of color. That’s why I think this is also coming out now instead of Oct b/c of the Sudanese congresswoman Ihan Omar and all of the malicious and racist vitritol against her. Just for being her. SMH. It has to be hard standing up, not only for your rights but yes the rights even for the ones that talk against you. We need more like her to stand tho. It’s important for all girls and women of all colors and races.

    • Sidewithkids says:

@Kay, now to your thing about the Tory party and these women. I’m sure if some people were talking crap about the people you care about you would say something to protect them. That’s what Angie is doing here. That’s first. But moreover, politically, heck, universally, the point is to come together as people (human beings) w/ ideas to debate about a number of topics and then come up w/ the best solution and/or products. In all issues, people should be able to reach across the aisle (no matter affiliation in life) and do this in a smart, reasonable, steadfast, friendly fashion. This is how this should work. Everyone is not going to agree and/or get along yet if people are fully functioning and sane, things can progress. This is what Angie is doing in her work. You think Angie agrees w/ everyone she works w/ film/humanitarian/political wise? NO. She worked w/ John McCain for Pete’s sake. Lol. Certainly towards the end there John changed his mind on a number of things but for a long time, he was very hawkish and racist on many of policies. Angie is working w/ these people to help change their minds. Before her, they didn’t do humanitarian work, now they are so it’s working. How do you think you change the mind of a bigot, talk to them, that’s the only way. May work, may not but if you want change that’s the only way. All Republicans aren’t as insane as the Orange Clown and they are willing to work and listen and debate. These women are doing the same w/ Angie and they also have found some commonalities that have made them friends which is sweet. Also, look at Angie’s kids. I’m sure they all have differences of opinions all the time but at the end of the day Angie is like, “what did you learn today from each other?”

Sidenote: Please quit acting like the woman has to have help to write. She’s seems VERY capable of writing an essay. This essay. You should look up her accomplishments. She’s done ALOT on her own.

    • Hmmm says:

Angelina donated $ to Hillary Clinton we know this because the dailyfail tried to shame her for it. I think she’s independent. She has said basically that because it gives her more freedom to work with both parties.

Read her time magazine pieces to see where she stands… she definitely doesn’t have the current republican mindset.

    • AmberRed says:

I don’t find her any more informed than an average HW celebrity; her PR would claim different. Her take on militarised humanitarian intervention (which is a very dubious principle in international law and international relations) is the most disturbing thing about her “politics.” She also bought land from a Cambodian guy who allegedly committed genocide and didn’t see anything wrong with the ex-KR soldiers working as extras. She has little understanding of economics and seems to be libertarian (Ayn Rand fan), which would make her unsympathetic towards social and economic equality, which you’d assume she’d gravitate towards. I don’t think she has anything figured out and I don’t think she should be seen a thought leader in any sense. It’s easy to write op-eds (probably with researchers and ghostwriters) but I don’t think she really has an informed take on everything from how to solve humanitarian problems to trickier grey areas and complex issues with competing challenges and how to take a principled, ethical stance in these “greyer” areas.

      • Peg says:

        You have an agenda.

      • Hmmm says:

How would you know. Most of Hollywood doesn’t even care about the topics Angelina speaks about LoL
Give me some links from average hw celebs talking about refugees , immigration and witchy wicked women 🤷🏽‍♀️

      • OriginalCarol says:

LMAO!! I wanna know who are those average HW celebs that you are talking about! Are we talking about the likes of Miley Cyrus or the Kardashians? Please. Have the receipts before you started accusing someone of being ignorant, especially with Jolie who had put in more than a decade of her life being involved in these issues dear to her heart.

      • entine says:

She supports /has supported charities that help children traveling solo with legal representation (KIND) along with the Microsoft Co. . She does /knows more than the average. She was speaking about Syria’s humanitarian plight before hell broke loose own the camps, which were already full, but before the worst events.

      • ad says:

@Amberead, Just making awareness of refugees issues is good enough! How about you what have you contributed? For many they appreciate her effort especially those who actually worked with her! She is contributing/ raising awareness to make a change that’s all! Good enough for me, if wickedness is the only way to achieved Change then let it be!

      • TRuthhurts says:

I have listened and read most of her essays and speeches given and nothing in any of them lead me to believe anything you stated. What I did get is that she is against violent crimes against women and children. Tried to offer resolutions to countries to help support mass migrations of refugees. Talk about the people she met in these camps and tell some of their stories. If that is being politically biased then so what?

  26. Carmen says:

It’s almost unfair for anyone to be that beautiful. And God, I want that leather jacket!

  27. Kay says:

I’m surprised Maddox is studying science – I always thought he would study languages or films. I don’t think she should have mentioned which country he was studying – just let him enjoy being a student with some privacy.

    • Hmmm says:

Of course the press would’ve found out anyways. she’s obviously a proud parent. We don’t know those kids so saying you’re surprised is a bit odd.

      • Kay says:

She always said he was good at languages and has helped with her films. He has been names producer or something.

  28. Dbee says:

OMG!! I love her essay, I think she’s witty would love to see her in a comedy one day.
    Can’t wait to watch Malficient
I really wish she could share her reading list with us

  29. FluffyPrincess says:

My god her face is magnificent! Up close, front view, side view — she is a beauty for the ages. When she is styled like this and happy, it’s unreal how beautiful she is. She really could have gone the shallow route, but it’s lovely that she dedicates her life to something more than her face.

  30. SM says:

I love it. She used disney fairytale to make a contemporary political statement.

  31. ad says:

Her ex husband ( Pitt) said she is smart & funny, back to Lara Croft days a lady CEO of Paramount (can’t remember her name) said she is smart & beautiful,
Not just a pretty face but witty & smart. Wicked! Maleficrnt promotion has started!

  32. serena says:

She’s so gorgeous and I really love her essay/article!
