Camila Cabello on Donald Trump: ‘I can’t believe he’d say something so disgusting’

It’s funny to me that magazines still do special issues on “the power of young Hollywood” or “the power of youths,” when really… the young have ALL the power. No, they don’t, but it does feel like everything is all about (garbage) youth these days. Garbage youths in movies, audiences made up of garbage youths, songs sung by garbage youths for a primarily young audience and on and on. Variety’s Power of Young Hollywood Issue selected three people for a trio of covers: Stephan James, Cole Sprouse and yes, Camila Cabello. This post is just devoted to Camila’s interview because, frankly, she’s the most famous one out of that group. The interview starts out with Camila’s background as a first-generation Cuban/Mexican-American and how she’s appalled by Donald Trump. Some highlights:

On Trump telling four congresswomen to go back to their countries: “I’m shocked. It’s tragic. I can’t believe he’d say something so disgusting. That could have been me. That’s also what I was thinking as I was looking at the images of kids being held against their will. I was, like, there is literally no difference between these people and my mom.”

Her album full of YES: “I’m trying to say yes more… I can be a little bit Miranda, but I’m trying to be Carrie in the sense that I love experiences; I’m a romantic; I’m emotional. But I think through stuff a lot. … It’s like there’s two Camilas: the one that’s a scared, little hermit crab, and, if left her own devices, will just stay home. And there’s the other who’s, like, ‘No, we’re going out.’ And she takes the other Camilla by the hand and just f–king drags her. That’s what I’m trying to do, and I think it’s what I did these past two years.”

Transitioning to acting in a Cinderella remake: “I overthought it so much. I was like looking up TED Talks [on] how to make difficult decisions — it’s a good one, by the way — and decided that this is a life experience I can’t miss out on.”

Falling in love: “Falling in love is like an infinite amount of levels and layers and angles. I fell in love and just opened up. Everything was written in present moment.”

She bought a home in LA: “Because I’ve been doing this for such a long time, I forget that I am quote-unquote famous or that people are looking at me. It makes me insanely uncomfortable to see pictures of me that I didn’t know were taken. I honestly hate it. I don’t want to live like a celebrity and have to look perfect every time I step out of my house. I ignore it as much as possible. If I’m going to look like s— that day and cameras are in my face, I don’t care because I choose being human and normal.”

She’s working on getting quiet: “I’m still working on that. Before, if I was unsure about something, I’d send it to everybody I knew. And I’ve learned that when you’re unsure, that’s your time to really look inward and, as Oprah says, ‘get quiet.’ The answer is always waiting for you. But if it’s too loud in your head or you’re running around f–ing flailing asking other people, you’re never gonna hear it.”

Speaking up for Taylor Swift in Tay’s Summer Beef: “Because she is my friend. And someone in her position — which is, like, on another level — I can’t imagine how many times she’s been let down by people, or gotten disappointed by friends who were just using her, or people who just wanted to be friends with Taylor Swift or whatever. I’m happy to be there for her as a person. Like, ‘Even when it’s not popular, I’ve got you. I’m, like, your real friend.’ With the Scooter thing, I one-hundred-percent feel her frustration. An artist of her caliber just being F–ed over like that, and not being able to have her masters? That sucks. It’s heartbreaking for her. And I do believe a lot of the systems in place for the music industry are kind of … messed up. When you think about how artists have to slave to make these things, and then you don’t own them, that is kind of a ridiculous concept.”

Just to be clear, if the conversation is “Taylor should own her masters,” of course I’m Team Snake as well. The problem was that Taylor herself made the conversation about a lot more than that. That’s not a hit on Camila, who clearly just sees the issue as “I will support my friend” and “artists should own their masters.” Which is fine, although it does seem rather ass-kissy on Camila’s part. As for falling in love… she totally means Shawn Mendes YAY. They’re in love. And it’s RILL. As for the stuff about Trump… yep. It’s absolute revulsion from so many. Remember that feeling of revulsion.

“I can be a little bit Miranda, but I’m trying to be Carrie in the sense that I love experiences”

    People ACTUALLY talk like that?!

    In 2019?

    • Ainsley7 says:

I assume that she is currently binge watching it. It’s really the only explanation for someone talking like that in 2019.

    • DiegoInSF says:

Yeah, I always describe myself as a Samantha although I’ve slowed down in my late 20s lol.

  2. grabbyhands says:

    Yeesh.

I’m sure she’s harmless, but that was painful to read. It sounds like she and her PR person spent the previous evening going over notes so she would sound like, totally serious and stuff about things.

  3. Valiantly Varnished says:

I agree with her about Trump…too bad she doesn’t have that same energy for herself when she feels like dropping the n-word. 🤷🏽‍♀️

  4. line says:

Sorry I can not stand it, she is mediocre singer whose personality sounds so wrong.

At this point if I hear someone say (or read that they said) “I can’t believe Trump would….(insert horrifying/racist/misogynist/dictator-esque word/action)” my only response to them is “You clearly have not been paying attention.” It’s so sad but I’m not longer surprised or caught off guard by this horrible man who is in charge of our country. Every time I hear about another thing that should horrify me, it’s just “Yeah, that sounds about right”.

And for clarity, I don’t mean HE is right at all. Just that whatever awful thing he is doing at the moment sounds in line with his character.
