Katie Holmes: Being Suri’s mom ‘is absolutely the greatest gift & privilege’

Baby Archie meets Archbishop Desmond Tutu during a visit to Africa

Is it just me or is Katie Holmes’ hip an optical illusion on this Shape Magazine cover? I’ve been staring at this for too long, trying to figure out how her body was positioned. Maybe it’s just bad/weird Photoshop. Anyway, Katie covers Shape because she’s going all-out to promote her role in Brahms: The Boy II, a horror movie. This is why she’s been giving interviews all over the place. Katie has seemed a lot lighter and happier recently, following her breakup from on-and-off boyfriend Jamie Foxx. Katie isn’t sulking about it. In fact, she just seems… fine. After all the drama with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, she’s doing great. Some highlights from this Shape Mag interview:

What she likes best about herself: “I enjoy life, and I love adventure. That’s the thing I like best about myself. I like to meet people and experience lots of things. I’m always up for new challenges.”

Doing a scary movie: “I play a woman who is terrified that an evil doll is taking over her child. Doesn’t every parent worry that an influence will take over their child? To me, it’s a metaphor for that.”

Being mom to Suri Cruise: “I feel very blessed to have such a special daughter. Being her mom is absolutely the greatest gift and privilege.”

On fitness: “I exercise four times a week. Variety is key, or I get bored. I like Spinning, boxing, and yoga, and sometimes I’ll take a dance class. I have my own Spin bike, so I can do it at home when I have to get up really early; otherwise I go to FlywheelSports. I got into boxing a couple of years ago, and now I take classes at Rumble. They play great music, and it’s so fun. It targets your upper body, which is good because I can forget to do that.”

She works out with Suri sometimes: “Sometimes I work out with my daughter. It just depends on the day. We have our routines, and occasionally they overlap. But I don’t force her to work out with me because I know that’s lame.”

On self-care: “I’m a big believer in self-care. It’s better for everybody if you’re taking care of yourself. Those moments are really worth it. I like to get massages. I also have a favorite daily ritual: I take 20 minutes in the morning to write down a list of the things I’m grateful for and listen to calming music. It’s kind of a meditation, and I give myself that time to just enjoy. It sets a good tone for my day.”

A balanced diet: “I try to have a balanced approach to food. I focus on putting nutritious things into my body, but I don’t obsess over it. If I’m going out to dinner with friends, I enjoy a nice meal. If there’s junk food, I have it and then just eat healthier the next day. My favorite food is nachos. I love dessert too—cakes, candy. And sometimes a good hot fudge sundae goes a long way. Overall, though, I’m pretty healthy. Usually I make a smoothie in the morning with greens and fruit. And I eat a lot of salads and fish. I try not to have too many carbs, like pasta and bread, because they make me so sleepy. But I love food, and I love cooking. I’m not a great cook, but I enjoy it. I feel really good if I make a recipe well because it can get a little confusing at times. You’re on the phone or you get distracted, and then you can’t remember if you put that one ingredient in. Did I add salt? Or was it sugar?”

I wonder about Katie’s life sometimes, and I have wondered about it for years. Katie works sometimes – it’s not like she “pulls a Zellweger” and disappears for years at a time. Post-divorce, Katie has done movies, TV miniseries, TV movies, whatever. She hasn’t really had anything that’s stuck or been very notable, but my point is that… she basically organizes her life around working for a few months here and there, and then the rest of the time she’s just in New York, raising Suri and taking care of the two of them. Katie got a lot of money in the divorce. She bought herself a nice apartment and she basically lives like a trophy wife without the crazy husband. Her days are spent working out and getting massages and shopping and doing the school run. And honestly, that sounds really nice.

    It’s a nice life considering….
I’m glad to see that she’s doing well, I’m always rooting for anyone who has gone through a divorce or a horrible relationship. She’s happy, and living her life. I only wish she would do something memorable, a meaty role, here and there.

I give her credit…she’s not the greatest actress and I think she knows that, but she just wants to keep busy and working. I’ll always be in awe of her burner phone escape from you-know-who. Oh, and the cashmere bra, that was to die for.

Haha, she’s definitely bold and happy to push the limits for her product promotion deals. Good income for her.

““I play a woman who is terrified that an evil doll is taking over her child. Doesn’t every parent worry that an influence will take over their child? To me, it’s a metaphor for that.”

This made me laugh out loud. Honey, you’re in a horror movie about an evil doll. It’s fine. No shame in that game. Don’t try to make it something bigger than it is.

20 minutes a day writing down things you’re grateful for. Okay. I can believe that ritual as an occasional thing, but EVERY day? Again, a ready nice practice every once and a while, but does that really change a lot from day to day?

      It’s a great metaphor for Scientology…

    • Jerusha says:

She saw how Scientology took over Nicole’s two oldest children. She states quite clearly it’s a metaphor. She knows what she’s talking about and she got the hell out with Suri before she was brainwashed, too.

    • Mo says:

It’s the ritual that counts, which is why it’s daily. She does also say she’s listening to calming music, so she’s maybe not just listing. Even if the list doesn’t change, it’s more about the grounding and focusing on your present life, which is a good thing.

Katie is living the dream. I would LOVE to be a rich trophy wife without the husband. Good for her.

  5. Oceans says:

She’s a typical Sagittarius: positive attitude and doesn’t like to put her emotions out there. We kind of get on with life. I love carbs too but as with Katie, certain types make me so sleepy so I only have them at night. I think she’s mainly an endorsement person these days: pap walks, “partnership” IG posts, paid appearances at fashion shows and charities and so on. Some marketing insider poster on an earlier Katie Holmes CB post commented KH gets five figures for 15, 20 minutes of work. Do the maths and this stuff gives her a nice seven-figure income per year without all the travel, stress, rehearsals, auditions, and promotional tours of movie-making. Not a bad way to make money.

  6. Lena says:

Lol, Shes funny with her ditsy description of her cooking. I’m glad she’s free of her long distance on off romance with Fox and it seems like she is too.

I’m glad that Katie and Suri are enjoying their Cruise-free life. But man, whoever styled Katie for the magazine cover did a terrible job. Her left boob looks oddly squished in that dress, and the makeup makes her look downright consumptive. She looks much better in the red carpet photo.

  8. Bread and Circuses says:

I think she looks spectacular in the silver dress on the cover! Wow!

There is one fold that is helping create the illusion of hip, but she looks great regardless.
