Gwyneth Paltrow overheard calling photographers “roaches” at charity event

Chuck Taylor, former Billboard writer and senior editor, contributed his behind-the-scenes account of a recent event he attended in New York. The event was a gala for the Children of the City’s Champions of Hope, and Gwyneth Paltrow was the “honored guest” of the evening. Last week, we even covered Gwyneth’s exclusive interview with People Magazine at the event, where she was going on and on about how “corporate America” wanted a piece of her Goop. But, according to Taylor, Gwyneth Paltrow isn’t so nice when she isn’t force-feeding Goop to People Magazine. Taylor overheard Gwyneth referring to the end of the photo call, and he quotes her as saying, “I’m done. Get the roaches out of here.” “The roaches” being the photographers – and mind you, I’m saying “photographers”, not paparazzi. These photographers were invited to the event because the charity wanted more press:

Amid one friggin’ downpour after another, beginning around 2 p.m. and still dribbling past 10 p.m., Ayhan and I were invited to Tribeca Grand this evening for a charity event, where Gwyneth Paltrow was the honored guest. It was supposed to be on the rooftop, but given that the city was sopping, it moved inside.

The press gathered on a balcony above the setting for the $375-a-plate dinner as Paltrow entered amid the typical madness and mania that accompanies any celeb standing in front of camera crews. If you’ve never seen it, you’d almost pity the star (until, of course, you remember that this is a responsibility of their choice to be in the public eye), as photogs shout out, “Gwyneth, look here.” “Look to the right.” “Smile.” “Turn your head.” “You look great.” “Hey, Gwyneth, turn around.” “Look over your shoulder.” “Can you smile again?” It’s truly bombast like nothing else in the entertainment business, and you wonder how these folks manage to look relaxed and smile ever so sweetly.

Then again, you consider that an actress like Paltrow makes $10 million per picture… and empathy evaporates. Deal with it.

For that reason, it was astonishing to hear the disgruntled comments from the press on the elevator, as we were hurried back to the lobby, that Miss Gwyneth was overheard telling her publicist, “I’m done. Get the roaches out of here,” referring to those very photographers that deliver her pictures to the wire services, newspapers and weekly celebrity magazines, helping her maintain any semblance of relevance.

Considering that her last semi-hit film was “Running With Scissors” in 2006—while she is in post-production for action adventure “Iron Man II,” starring Robert Downey Jr., not due until May 2010—you’d think she might maintain the slightest humility.

[From Chuck Taylor’s blog @ The Smoking Nun]

Mostly I believe this because I have absolutely no problems believing with all my heart that Gwyneth is a snotty, entitled, elitist bitch. I can actually see her looking down her nose with that haughty, superior look on her face, and saying in her snotty way, “Get the roaches out of here.” Gwyneth was most likely asked to attend this event under the condition that they could use her image and her interviews to get more press for the charity. So instead, she gives one interview – about her Goop – and then snottily poses for a few pictures, then demands “the roaches” leave. She really is a goopy piece of work, isn’t she?

    Dumbass bitch.

Okay. Could she please be irrelevant now?

    weird outer space dress

  5. KDRockstar says:

Is this really a surprise to anyone? Still, while she is very elitist and snobby, I think it hides some low self-esteem issues. GOOP may as well be her way of saying, “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and gosh darn it, people like me!”

  6. Kaiser says:

Blue Skies – You can send tips or info to info@celebitchy.com

CB gets to tips usually within a day, and either covers them, passes them on to another writer, or ignores them (if it’s a weird piece no one wants to cover).

Or, you can do what you did and just put the link on a thread. Thanks for asking!

  7. Livia says:

    Her neck truly frightens me.

  8. Jojo says:

I HATE HER BUT I LOOOOOOVE THAT DRESS!!!!

  9. j. ferber says:

I’m surprised no one has written yet, “Yes, they ARE roaches and scum and deserve whatever happens to them” as so often has been the case with other posts. Yes, I get the distinction being made, but some bloggers are such rabid anti-celebrity photographers that I supposed the difference would make no difference to them. Just wait and see. I bet it will happen yet.

  10. AC says:

If she said that about the Paps on the street that would have been fine. But Paps at an event, who have credentials to be there, and are keeping to their designated area etc. are doing a much needed job and making your charity/movie more successful.

  11. Bill Hicks is God says:

Stupid cizzunt doesn’t even know the difference between ‘paparazzi’ and ‘press’…un.FAHKIN.believable.

  12. BlueSkies says:

A real close up of this shot reveals how much the purple/silver material has frayed around the upper arm area. The designer gave her a free, used dress that a model wore on the runway at a fashion show. So obvious. She deserves no more.

  13. Bill Hicks is God says:

Well Blueskies, it looks like a smoking turd alright and I love your addition of insult to the injury.

  14. Taradash says:

ok like this is like high school.. take someone ruin their life make fun of them pass it around

    grow up

the press and paps are ROACHES

nothing ever printed about anyone is nearly anywhere true ,/// wake up smell ur feet or the coffee whichever

  15. Diablo says:

More evidence that Gwynnie is a self-centered witch with far more self esteem than is warranted. She might as well have said “let them eat cake”…although it’s unfortunate that there isn’t a guillotine waiting for her.

  16. princess pee says:

So, Taradash, how do you suggest that Gwynnie promote her movies and charitable works to us? I mean, she wants us to go see them, right? But a poster isn’t going to cut it for most viewers these days, so … interviews. Photo calls.
There is a difference between the paps running into traffic to smother some star and the photographers invited to be at a charitable function.

I think it’s hilarious that you think we are ruining Gwyneth’s life right now.

  17. CeeJay says:

Last week I defended her chicken recipe. This week I’d like to rescind my support.

I think she’s truly miserable in her own life. She’s not living where she wants to live (which is why she pumps it up to be something it’s not). She’s not happy with the state of her career (which is why she bitches so much about media attention). She’s not happy with anything in her life (which is why she’s started a web site telling everyone else how they should live theirs). If she wasn’t such a whiny baby I’d actually feel sorry for her.

She’s not the first celebrity to bitch at a charity event and she won’t be the last.

  18. Jacq says:

The Englishmen’s version of Katherine Heigl.

  19. Nicole says:

The only reason she’s around is because she screwed Brad Pitt. They will use the media when they see fit. Magan Fox was right when she said the occupanion is really no different than being a call girl. They will do anything to make a buck, pretend at others expense and pretend they are worthy because of the money they tally up, from who? People see movies for entertainment/ writting, not because she’s in it. Hollywood has become a joke no one really admires anymore.

  20. jojo says:

An ugly dress on an ugly person…

  21. Judy says:

If anyone knowswhat a raoch is ,it is GP. Has she looked in the mirror?

  22. Mizz Expert says:

Right ON!!! At least Angelina uses her celebrity to advance worthy causes and is gracious enough to support our military without any grandstanding, vs the oh-so-weary Gwyneth, her Royal Highness.

  23. Rina7 says:

She needs to shut her f’ing GOB! If they are “roaches” she is dog shyte!

  24. la chica says:

Gwyneth is busy killing off what’s left of her career. My sense is that she is just an unhappy woman and she masks that with sneering superiority. Deep inside she probably just wants to be hugged.

  25. Nebraska says:

    Goopy ain’t no Angelina.

  26. DD says:

    ewww how rude.

  27. oh my says:

hmmmm, maybe the roaches should stop photoshopping her pics. . .

  28. James says:

Why does she get to you so much? You sound petty and jealous with your frequent Gwyneth posts.

  29. ccoop says:

OMG, I didn’t notice the dress was so frayed till it was pointed out!

I actually like the dress, weird appliques and all, but it’s the cheapo purple Lurex stuff that makes it look like a bad Halloween costume.

AND her hair always looks like double-processed crap.

    Okay, that’s all! :-p

  30. Trashaddict says:

How apt that she’s bitching about the roaches in a dress that makes her look like she’s a beetle.

  31. K McFarlane says:

Hey, take a photo of me looking up my nose and I’ll call you a roach too 🙂

  32. Jazz says:

I love how she’s got her nose in the air in that pic. 🙂

  33. BlueSkies says:

‘Scuse us, James. That’s not jealousy working. She’s just writing on stuff we want to hear & to be envied requires one to be beautiful and well educated and have a great bod, none of which Paltrow owns. Good day, sir.

  34. Sinjin says:

Hey Jacq, Gwyneth is American, not English.

  35. cleveland says:

I agree, I’m totally surprised there’s no “paps are roaches” and “it’s ok to hit them!” comments. But, then again, she’s not attractive as Jude Law and men can pretty much get away with anything as celebs.

  36. kurt says:

    c … unt

  37. auntie git says:

yeah, that was rude. but it gets SO OLD to read each GP-related story here….nothing but pure hatred. we are all aware how you feel–seriously, get over it.

  38. Hood Alzie says:

She should’ve used thicker make up to conceal that trunk of hers. All in all, not a bad dress to cover a kaka- doodoo mixing shtick, all focus on it.

  39. Magsy says:

Okay I won’t slam GP but that’s an ugly ass dress.

  40. Uh... says:

can somebody explain to me why so many of you hate her? And not just “hate”, but the kind where you writhe around on the floor, eating carpet just to spite her? I dunno…I’ve been out of the loop for a long time. Did she do something horrible over the last couple of years? I know a bunch of other celebs that get this kind of bile thrown at them, but I think most of them are deserving of it. Can somebody tell me what this woman has done?

  41. Lucie says:

We ate at a restaurant called DC10 in Santa Monica fairly frequently when she was the hostess. This was, obviously, well before she became a movie star. We had no idea who she was. All we said to each other was, “She isn’t very welcoming, is she?” She was very frosty and she did not smile. We went back because the food was good. Her demeanor never brightened. Not the best attitude for a hostess, lol.
