Tiffany Haddish: ‘Men got to work for it, you know? They like the hunt’

Tiffany Haddish has a wonderful feature in the current issue of Harper’s Bazaar. They dressed her up like Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s and she says in the piece that she was completely delighted with the concept. She even posed with an orange cat, just like Holly’s cat in the movie. The interview is classic Tiffany – she’s funny as hell and name-dropping like crazy. I love that no matter how famous she gets, she’s still excited about meeting other famous people and talking about them in interviews:

Interacting with her fans in person: “I don’t mind anybody talking to me, but if I’m eating, that makes me mad because I have a serious relationship with food. When people come over to me when I’m eating, I’m always surprised they’re not like, ‘Tiffany Haddish is an evil bitch.’”

Getting bat mitzvahed on her 40th birthday: It was no ordinary bat mitzvah: Sarah Silverman’s rabbi sister, Susan Silverman, officiated the ceremony; Billy Crystal, Jimmy Kimmel, and Chelsea Handler were among the guests; and Barbra Streisand gave her a gold Star of David necklace, which she is wearing when we meet. “I learned Hebrew and everything. I was doing those bar mitzvahs for like 11 years, so I was always learning things.”

How she was introduced to PopSockets: “Taylor Swift was the first one that got me into these things. She was like, ‘Here, get some memorabilia from my concert.’ I was like, ‘What is this?’ And she was like, ‘You put it on your cell phone.’”

On Brad Pitt’s promise, in 2018, that they would get together in one year if they were both single: Haddish says she saw Pitt almost exactly one year after their elevator encounter at a party. “You could tell he was scared of me. He was like, ‘Oh, sh-t, Tiffany Haddish is here,’ and doing his eyes shifty. I was like, ‘Ain’t nobody f–king with you. You’ve got too many kids.’ Men got to work for it, you know? They like the hunt. Can’t make it too easy.”

On Meryl Streep being a role model: “She smells like success. She introduced me to Steven Spielberg. I was bowing and stuff: ‘Hello, Mr. Spielberg.’ He was like, ‘You are so delightful. I just love it. You are so funny. You really bring great energy to a room.’ I was like, ‘Oh, thank you … I can do that on set too.’”

On how Salma Hayek Pinault helped her navigate how to speak up for herself on set: “She was telling me how to go about it. It was the best learning experience. I could’ve been fired that day. It very well could’ve been like, ‘Fire Tiffany. We’ll get somebody else.’ That was a chance that I was willing to take. You have to say what you believe. When you have that bad feeling, honor that because that’s the truth. Your emotions are your compass through life.”

I love that Barbra Streisand gave her a Star of David necklace. How did that even happen? Meaning, how did they even meet? That’s what’s crazy about Tiffany’s life right now – fame begets fame, and someone always knows someone. I’m sure Tiffany was just like “I wish I could meet Barbra Streisand,” and someone was like “oh, I know Babs, I’ll introduce you.” What else… don’t hold your breath waiting for Spielberg to put Tiff in a movie, he seems to only do dude films these days. And the Brad Pitt stuff… I’ll admit it, if Brad started chasing Tiffany, it would make me so much more interested in him.

The photoshoot is AMAZING. The one with the cat is probably my fave.

I don’t like that tired old saying men are not interested in you if you go after them. That they like to at least imagine they “caught” the woman. That women should pretend to be hard to get and finally “captured.” And that only after you have “secured” the guy – because hey what are women without a man??? – you can slowly ease into being yourself again.
I would not be interested in any man who would freak out if I asked them out – how immature is that? All those idiotic “rules” about everything.
Perhaps I misunderstood her? I’m just tired of everything today.

I know this is an unpopular opinion but I find that Haddish gets away with a lot of conservative crap about relationships, and stuff in general (men like to hunt…), because she cultivates the unhinged persona that gets her to be introduced to everyone because she passes for a contemporary, irreverent person when I find her mostly rude. She’s probably delightful in person but… I feel she gets a pass for being rude that others wouldn’t for some reason. I might be wrong but… Hm.

She is joking when she talked about Brad dating stuff, she knows Brad wont chase her. She is actually an Angie fan.

Hmm, that’s not what I mean. Of course she is joking about Brad. I watched her stand up and she is not as funny and as clever as everyone puts her out to be + she has a very conventional sense of humour.
You know it’s like when you hear a friend talk about another friend saying she/he is the best and then you meet them and you go: uh? That’s Haddish for me, not funny and not really as ground-breaking as people say she is.
Plus she name drops a lot.
Anyway, I seem to be spending a lot of energy on someone who I don’t care for much.
        Seeing myself out.

Eyeroll ive never been ‘chased’ by a guy in my life. This isn’t a romcom it’s real life.

  5. TrixC says:

I don’t really like comments like this, it just normalises stalking behaviour to say that women want to be pursued. And it’s pretty old-fashioned.

  6. Elisabeth says:

What always bothered me: my mom would always go “if you chase him and get him, you’ll Always wonder if he really wanted you & no one else, or if he just was like ‘ok, sweet deal’

That is so Messed Up. But then again it’s been years since she said that (pretty sure she still believes it 100%). My parents are recovering republicans tho so I’m at least happy/proud they woke up & changed parties/ideologies. When Obama was in office I think? Towards the end?, it was the repub majority voting on restrictions for purchasing AK47s or semi-automatic weapon (the #1 gun used in every mass shooting), which included PROHIBITING people on the TERRORIST WATCHLIST from buying these massacre tools.

Mitch McConnell & his fellow evils voted AGAINST it. Yes, that’s right, the republicans voted to protect known terrorists’ gUn riGhTs. Taking away the guns from ppl on the TERRORIST WATCHLIST is going too far for them!!! They think it should be legal for ppl on the terrorist watchlist to have guns made to kill tons of ppl, weapons of war gone commercial. It’s sad it took that long for my parents to dump the repub party but I’m glad it happened & grateful. Many other offspring aren’t as fortunate ugh😞
