Clint Eastwood no longer supports Donald Trump, will now support Mike Bloomberg

AFI FEST 2019 Presented By Audi "Richard Jewell" Premiere Arrivals

Clint Eastwood is a Republican. Coincidentally, so is Michael Bloomberg! In 2016, Eastwood supported Donald Trump because, in his mind, “people” were “tired of political correctness,” i.e. white people were tired of being called out for their racism and misogyny and stupidity. Clint was right – that was one of Trump’s major selling points, the idea that white people could go back to being absolutely terrible. Anyway, Clint Eastwood is not supporting Trump for reelection. He’s supporting the other Republican, Mike Bloomberg.

Longtime Republican Clint Eastwood is pulling support from Donald Trump in the 2020 election. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the actor-director signaled that he thinks a different candidate would be the better choice. “The best thing we could do is just get Mike Bloomberg in there,” he said.

While he approves of “certain things” the president has done, he wishes that he would act “in a more genteel way, without tweeting and calling people names. “I would personally like for him to not bring himself to that level,” he said.

Eastwood also touched on the controversy surrounding Olivia Wilde’s character, Kathy Scruggs, in his 2019 film “Richard Jewell.” He showed Scruggs, the real-life reporter who alleged Jewell planted a bomb at the 1996 Olympics, sleeping with an FBI source to get information. Lawyers for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, the newspaper at which Scruggs worked, called the portrayal “entirely false and malicious, and…extremely defamatory and damaging.” The film was Clintwood’s worst opening in 40 years. The director defended his right to cinematic freedom and said the newspaper was trying to shroud its “guilt” over a “reckless story.”

“Well, she hung out at a little bar in town, where mostly police officers went,” he said. “She had a boyfriend that was a police officer. Well, we just changed it in the story. We made it a federal police officer instead of a local,” he said.

Even though “Richard Jewell” was involved in a #MeToo-like controversy, Eastwood said he appreciates that the movement has empowered women to stand up “against people who are trying to shake [them] down for sexual favors.”

However, he believes that “presumption of innocence, not only in law, but in philosophy” has been lost in the increase of accusations of sexual misbehavior.

[From Variety]

According to another secondary source (WSJ is paywalled), Eastwood said: “The #MeToo generation has its points,” and that women in Hollywood had long been harassed by men, and “It was very prolific back in the 1940s and ’50s… and the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s…” As for that… the fact that he says all that, and then he continues to smear a dead woman because she – according to him – used to hang out in a cop bar, is astounding. He’s the one who knows that a journalist traded sex for information, despite all of her coworkers refuting that story. And I still don’t understand why he’s mad about the Atlanta Journal-Constitution for merely reporting an accurate story, that the FBI were investigating Jewell. Anyway, no need to relitigate it endlessly, the movie bombed.

As for Eastwood’s newfound support of Bloomberg… as much as I want to embrace the idea that some Trump supporters are disgusted with Trump’s behavior, I fear the opposite is true. I fear that all the MAGA douches are going to dig in their heels and that Eastwood is the outlier.

Did he really say, “1940s and ’50s… and the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s, ’90s…”??? Because if I heard that in person, I’d interrupt and suggest he simply say since the beginning. And then I’d remind him it’s all women. Everywhere. And then I’d suggest he grab an oxygen tank and have a seat.

You were making good points until you threw in the line about his age. An argument loses it’s power once you also start with insults.

    • Kittycat says:

I thought he was making a joke and showing how many years it’s been going on.

  2. Samanathalous says:

Do we care what Clint has to say? I think the celebrities make it worse for the candidates not better.

    • Middle of the road says:

I agree with you whole heartily! Every time I hear a celebrity endorsement, I just roll my eyes. Clearly a rich millionaire can relate to me an average everyday working American. The audacity of some of them is just ugh.

    • Guest with Cat says:

I agree. I cancelled this man ages ago over his callous treatment of the women in his life.

    • lucy2 says:

Nope. I felt the same when I saw the Jeremy Irons story the other day – I’m so tired of cranky old white men who feel threatened because others would like some equality. Especially those who have a long and well known history of toxic and abusive behavior.

  3. Bettyrose says:

Cue twittler rants on Clint being a washed up actor that no one ever liked anyway.

  4. Valiantly Varnished says:

Who TF cares?? All he did was trade his support from one rich racist A-hole to another RICHER racist A-hole.

    • whatWHAT? says:

      yeah, this.

I don’t give a rat’s AZZ what this out of touch jerk says.

as for why the movie bombed, I think it was because of the subject matter. like, what happened to Jewell was terrible, but did we need a whole feature film about the story?…

      • Valiantly Varnished says:

Yeah it also bombed because it’s political narrative was obvious and it was chock full of lies to support that narrative.

      • whatWHAT? says:

        also true.

I just feel like, even without the blatant lies to support his “the media and FBI suck” narrative, there just wouldn’t be enough interest in a dramatization of a relatively boring story. there’s just not much there.

hence, the dramatization and “fiction” (lies).

This should be a warning sign to any democrat who supports Bloomberg. I’m from WV, and in 2016, we had a republican running as a democrat in the gubernatorial race. He just knew he’d have an easier time winning the democratic nom. Throughout the race, I told anyone who would listen that Justice isn’t a democrat. And yet democrats lined up to support him. I went to democratic fundraisers with people giving him standing ovations… it made me sick. He won the election. And after he was sworn in as governor, he switched parties.

It’s just like Pete said in NV (I think), if people want a democratic president, they should vote for someone who is actually a democrat.

      • lucy2 says:

We have one of those here in NJ too. Ran as a Dem, won in 2018 in the blue wave, and then a few months ago, after much Trump butt kissing, switched to the GOP. He needs to go.

  5. Val says:

Dude looks like a walking corpse. That’s all I’ve got!

  6. Juxtapoze says:

Rich old white guy supports a different rich old white guy… So status quo since the beginning of American history. I’m pretty tired of the “rich old white guys club” having all the power and making all the rules. Time for this dynamic to change for the betterment of our planet.

    • Some chick says:

Way too many Old White Men in this contest.

I like Warren. I liked Kamala.

But unless the Giant Meteor shows up, I’m #BlueNoMatterWho

  7. Middle of the road says:

Buttigieg would be my pick but he would never win. The republicans will have a field day of a gay man became president. Can you imagine the outrage? They’d have prayer offs at churches, protests in choir robes, they’d throw bibles on the streets. Laughable but it’d be reality. The world is ending! They’d say. Jesus is returning soon, he’d never let a gay man be president. Hey Jesus sat back and watched over 33 million native Americans perish at the hands of white settlers so yeah I’m sure Jesus will intervene.

    • Mee says:

Buttigieg has problems acknowledging let alone doing anything about racism in his own town. Years of it while he was mayor. Can’t have that at the federal level

  8. Mumbles says:

All you need to know about Michael Bloomberg is that people with horrible political views like Clint are perfectly comfortable with him being president.

  9. Kathryn says:

There was a time I liked Clint. He made some fine films (A Perfect World, Unforgiven, Mystic River…) and he loved jazz like I do. But that unhinged tirade at the empty chair and his brutal treatment of Sondra Locke horrified me. Can’t go there anymore.

    • Juliette says:

This right here. I was never that big of a fan, something about his always seemed off too me. My Dad loves Eastwood films and took us to see Every Which way but loose when we were kids (super inappropriate, & my mom was so mad! but we loved the Orangutan giving the finger lol) . But yeah, they way he treated poor Sondra Locke was disgusting, poor woman.

He’s not a nice man so don’t care what he thinks or says.

  10. Gen says:

Ever since he unceremoniously dumped his ex wife — I haven’t liked him.

  11. Liz version 700 says:

Please God don’t invite Clint and his chair friend to the convention…

  12. Karen says:

Evil old white man attracts evil old white man.

  13. The Recluse says:

I lost all use for him and his work after that bizarre and insulting chair performance at the GOP convention.

  14. vegasschmegas says:

Bloomberg has nicer furniture to yell at.

  15. SJR says:

Eastwood lost me at the empty chair. And yes, his personal life shows how little he respects women.
He made some good movies, back in the day.
But, at no point have I ever given one hoot at his political opinions.

I would appreciate having anyone under 70 years old being a serious contender for POTUS.
I am 58, no way in hell do I kid myself that I would have the energy or the needed ability to hear all sides of an issue that it tales to be a decent POTUS.

Just a question..who among the candidates has served in the military? Military service during active hostilities, IMO, should be among the top resume items for POTUS.
I am certain most citizens know that Trump did not serve.
He bought his way out..and then had the outright balls to insult a Gold Star family, and former POW John McCain.
I have zero time for Trump or his supporters.

The Dems need to get their act together..the debates dwindle down to screaming over each other, no one has a decent, workable plan for the future, and candidates over 70 y/o…I have a bad feeling about all of it.
