Star Magazine Cover: Sarah Palin’s divorce

Star Magazine is focusing this week on the supposed marital trouble between former Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin and her husband, Todd. Judging by the teaser article on their site, they’re relying heavily on quotes from the sister of Sarah’s daughter Bristol’s former boyfriend, Levi Johnston. If you had trouble following that, you’re not the only one. They also quote from a brief interview in which Levi confirmed that there was trouble in the Palins’ marriage. In that original interview, conducted by Radar Online, Levi doesn’t volunteer the information that the Palins are having marital problems, and has to be goaded by the reporter into giving those quotes. When he’s first asked why Sarah resigned her position as governor, Levi says she is “following the money,” presumably from her book deal. Then when he’s asked directly if Sarah’s rumored marriage problems led her to resign, he’s like “Oh, yeah.” It’s a pretty weak reassurance from a guy who has an axe to grind. I’m not saying the Palins aren’t having marriage problems, but they deny that they are and Levi’s quotes aren’t exactly enough to base a story on. The quotes from Levi’s sister, Mercede, are also suspect.

Sarah Palin’s husband Todd smiled happily and stood lovingly by his wife’s side last year during her vice presidential campaign. But behind the scenes, their marriage was in turmoil — and now they’re on the brink of a shocking divorce!

In the Aug. 24 issue of Star, on sale today, we have world exclusive details about Alaska’s former first couple and their disintegrating union: They’re sleeping apart, arguing non-stop and losing control of their party-loving daughters!

“Sarah and Todd are fighting all the time,” Mercede Johnston — sister of Levi Johnston, ex-boyfriend of Sarah’s eldest daughter, Bristol — tells Star in an exclusive interview. “When they do, Todd often ends up sleeping on the couch at their home in Wasilla. Bristol used to tell Levi that her parents would argue and bicker over the littlest things, like who was supposed to take out the trash or wash the dishes.”

Levi, the father of Bristol’s 7-month-old son, Tripp, recently told RadarOnline.com that Sarah and Todd have had marital trouble “from day one,” and that he believed their escalating problems were the reason behind her mysterious decision to resign as governor of Alaska last month with more than a year left in her term.

His sister Mercede predicts: “If they ended their marriage within the next year, I wouldn’t be surprised at all. It really seems to me their marriage is just a sham for the cameras now!”

Another possibility, an Alaskan insider tells Star, is that with Sarah’s multi-million-dollar book deal in place, “she might even come to some financial agreement for him to stay with her and give the impression of a loving husband, at least through her book tour next year. In that respect, they’d be like the Jon and Kate Gosselin of politics!”

And like the TLC reality stars, Todd and Sarah have their brood of children to worry about — and their worries keep growing with a new family scandal. Star has an eyewitness account of their 15-year-old daughter Willow drinking vodka and smoking pot at a wild house party! “Her eyes were getting more and more glazed as the night went on,” says a source.

[From Star Magazine]

How much did Star pay Levi’s sister Mercede to support the story they wanted to run? How does Mercede have any inside information on that family? I buy that it could be second hand from Levi, but it sounds like they just got someone to tell them what they wanted to hear. We’ve seen a few interviews with Levi over the past few months and I’m pretty sure the only time he mentioned that the Palins were having trouble was when Radar asked him specifically about it. In an interview with GQ in May, Levi said that visiting the Palin’s house “makes me pretty darn uncomfortable,” so that seems to mean that he avoids it when possible. How would his sister know then that Todd Palin was sleeping on the couch?

It’s possible the Palins are staying together for the sake of the media and that they’ll wait to announce a breakup until after Sarah’s book comes out. Several bloggers out of Alaska reported this story last week and stood by it after receiving legal threats from Palin’s lawyers. Star Magazine isn’t going to convince me, though, and I doubt they have much more than we’ve already heard.

Also, if Willow is drinking and smoking pot at 15 I feel badly for that family, but I don’t think it’s Star’s place to mention it. It’s like they have this supposedly juicy story about the Palins breaking up and they have to go and throw in all the dirt they find about them. You can always count on Star to ruin good gossip by going overboard.

Sounds like a small-town squabble between two families is being magnified by the press, especially since one family is making their income by providing negative comments to the press.

Why should anyone care if the Palins are having marital problems or not? It is not interesting one way or the other.

  2. Tony says:

The media has an axe to grind doesn’t it? It’s easy to see why Levi is on the outs with the Palin family. The kid does not have a clue on how to live a dignified life.

  3. Ursula says:

Poor Palins, am not their biggest fan but they must regret the day they let Levi into their family. Sorry but he is a douche.

I wonder if she would have coped as VP.

  4. Firestarter says:

Well, if it is in the Star, it has to be Gospel!

Not a Palin fan, but Jeez, when will the media, legit and otherwise leave this woman alone? It is tiresome and old at this point.

Like another poster said, it is a squabble between two families and one seems to have a serious axe to grind.

In any case, so tired of Palin and the whole “divorce” scandal!

  5. HEB says:

I’m sorry but I’m more interested in Willow’s drinking than Sarah’s divorce.

  6. anonymous says:

Star is never right. I don’t believe this. And who cares anyway??

  7. Cinderella says:

They’re all a bunch of blowhards. Stick them on an ice floe and set them adrift.

  8. gg says:

I agree with 1-6. This reporting of “maybe so-and-so famous person is having marital issues” doesn’t improve anybody’s life one way or the other, most importantly the said couple.

All I can add is I wish I had Sarah Palin’s body. She gots a really cute figure.

  9. Tia C says:

@ HEB: Me too! That was the more interesting story, and they just threw that little tidbit in at the end! Willow probably is partying, what else is there to do in Alaska? LOL, kidding – I grew up in a rural area, too, and teenagers do party a lot.

These pre-divorce stories are always stupid, by definition. It’s really not a story until the couple themselves make it official. Until then, it’s just a waste of paper. Wish they would get some better dirt on Palin. It’s got to be out there.

  10. Lem says:

they probably cut a deal with the ‘up on blocks’ Mercedes for a case of PBR and a carton of Reds
IF there were drunken stoner pics of a Willow. We’d be looking at em.

I’m not saying the Palins don’t have ‘from day one’ problems. They have issues to be sure. I’m just saying 😉

  11. Annie says:

Eh. Maybe they are divorcing, maybe they’re not.

All I know is that my world would be a better place without Palin coverage. Please let her drop off into the dumbfuck obscurity from which she came. Thanks.

  12. the original kate says:

sarah palin keeps promising to go away but she never does. *sigh*

  13. Jill says:

What couple has not had a fight over dishes or chores? 100% of people would be divorced now if that was any indication. Look to the troubles of John and Elizabeth Edwards and Rielle Hunter – now that’s a problem that destroys marriages….

  14. Mairead says:

Ok, whilst the idea of this woman having any influence whatsoever on the USA’s foreign policy, her marriage and any issues it may have is their affair alone. There are very young kids involved here and I hate the idea of this tab making money of their misery.

  15. Alex says:

I hear ya Tia C! I grew up in a smaller town and we were at bush parties drinking at 14. I didn’t drink much until I was legal but most of my friends were drinking, doing pot, ‘shrooms, lsd, smoking – I’d say she’s a fairly typical teen.

  16. moo says:

Palin – ugh! SOOOO glad she didn’t make it to VP – she couldn’t even handle being Gov! NOW GO AWAY AND TAKE YOUR “POOR” FAMILY WITH YOU!!!!!

  17. Callan says:

I don’t care about the divorce part except it can be hard on the kids. It is too bad if Willow is following her peers in Wasilla. I knew Cameron Douglas around town and some of what happened with him. The family tried to keep things underwraps. It becomes a game for a kid addict. I hope in Willow’s case this will help her to come to terms with what she is doing. Believe me, a whole town can become part of keeping things underwraps. The right intention to protect the kid, the wrong reasons not to let them take the hard knocks.

  18. meeps says:

Conservative Christans don’t divorce, they just hate each other for the rest of their lives.

  19. Ophelia says:

    @meeps
that was hilarious. i think you made my day. 🙂

  20. JLM says:

It amazes me that anyone continues to give this douche any credibility when it’s clear he’ll say or do anything to try and get some publicity…he’ dating Kathy Griffin for godssack! If that doesn’t scream pathetic famewhore, I don’t know what does!

  21. drm says:

@ meeps BAHAHAHA! and as someone who was raised ultra conservative Christian and is now the furthest thing away from it…I can vouch that its also TRUE!

    🙂

  22. Joan says:

Did you hear that Willow was arressted for drugs and breaking and entering. This is the family values of Sarah Palin? Sounds like white trailor park trash and grifters, so sad thats the realy Sarah Palin. Sorry Sarah, noone is scared of you, I take that back, they are scared of you because your a streem smart whacho and crazy!
