Julia Roberts is more beloved than “rude, nasty” Shirley MacLaine

This is a weird, strange little gossip blurb out of Star Magazine. It seems that Julia Roberts and Shirley MacLaine are working together on the romantic-comedy Valentine’s Day, which basically stars half of Hollywood. I think it’s supposed to be like a Love, Actually-esque multi-storied romance, but I don’t know who is romancing who in the film. So far, we’ve seen on-set photos of everyone from Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Garner, Eric Dane, and Jessica Alba, and the IMDB credits also include Jessica Biel, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher, Taylor Lautner, Patrick Dempsey, Topher Grace, Queen Latifah, Jamie Foxx, and Taylor Swift.

According to Star, Julia and Shirley MacLaine have some scenes together, and when they were through filming, the crew gave Julia a champagne toast. Shirley was not toasted:

Julia Robert is the toast of Tinseltown. After wrapping her scenes for the upcoming film Valentine’s Day, she received a standing ovation and champagne from the cast and crew.

Just Julia’s costar, Shirley MacLaine, didn’t get the same reception.

“She was such a rude, nasty pain in the butt the whole time,” an insider reveals. “They decided to skip the toast for Shirley.”

Maybe in her next lifetime!

I guess I could buy it. Shirley MacLaine had a reputation for being a difficult actress to work with, I suppose she could still be like that. What I find weird is that with this large of a cast, and this many big names, they can probably only be working for about a week at most. How big of a bitch can you really be in a week?

Here’s Julia Roberts on the set of “Valentine’s Day” on July 7th, and Shirley MacLaine on the set on July 14th. Images thanks to Pacific Coast News and Fame Pictures ..

Eh, it’s long been established that Julia R. is no Christmas morning to work with either, so I’m not sure how true this story can be.

And I’m sorry but she looked awful in “Duplicity,” haggard + paunchy with an air of duck-billed platypus about the face – it really hurt the storyline/movie for me.

Anyway I actually stopped in to see if Kaiser had found a way to draw a comparison to “Mad Men,” and the “Shirley MacClaine is a Meanie,” story. I’m a little disappointed.”

  2. Ramona says:

Shirley MacLaine is a Hollywood Icon, she deserves the right to be a rude, nasty, pain in the ass bitch if she wants to be…we wouldn’t expect anything less of her….Remember the on set rantings of Bette Davis, Shelly Winters, Joan Crawford and Lana Turner? No matter what, Shirley MacLaine deserves respect and they should have lifted their glasses and toasted her as well…even if it was just for being a bitch!!

  3. Firestarter says:

Shirley is a Hollywood legend and fine actress. Julia Roberts has a reputation for being a total bitch and snotty diva. Whoever prefers Julia over Shirley is a moron. The woman has earned her right to be a bitch if she wants, Roberts is just a hateful bitch period!

  4. Ron says:

I have always found Julia Roberts to be completely pleasant. We used to live in the same neighborhood and she was always gracious.

  5. the original kate says:

IMO, julia is the same character in every movie, and that character is the prostitute from pretty woman. it’s like she found a formula and trots it out for each role. i actually thought her portrayal of erin brockovich was hideous. someone like holly hunter or jodie foster would have been perfect in that role.

  6. Laura says:

Shirley MacLaine is way awesome, julia roberts likes being the shit, can’t blame her – but Shirley MacLaine is still way awesome.

  7. vicsmith says:

“duck-billed platypus” LOL! That is the perfect description for her. Haven’t enjoyed looking at that face for years. Shirley MacLaine has earned her attitude.

  8. Tia C says:

@ the original Kate: Couldn’t agree more! She absolutely is the same character in every movie, and I thought her portrayal of Erin Brockovich was hideous as well and wondered why they didn’t get a more serious actress for that part. I can’t believe she won an Oscar for that shit.

Having said that, I do enjoy some of her movies. She may be the same in every one, but at least the plots and costars are different, lol. Shirley MacLaine is a serious talent and I’m a huge fan of her work. This story sounds a little too silly to be true.

  9. Giz says:

Regardless of how long you’ve been working in your field and whether or not you are an icon, NEVER entitles you to be rude to anyone. Where do people get off thinking that certain individuals are entitled to be a**holes to the rest of the world? …Well, it is JUST this attitude that explains a LOT in regards to “entitlement” issues!

Anyway, I would find hard to believe that Maclaine would such a person given her beliefs and practices. Obviously, people are confusing her with her character Ouiser Bordreaux!

    Awww…Julia Roberts PR at work….

Needs some PR, because seriously no one gives a flying fig about this home-wrecker. Her movies tank all the time.

She has to attach herself to young, more talented stars to get a hit movie anymore.
    Same w/ Shirley MacLaine.

  11. Lilly says:

Now Donna….Shirley MacLaine has done more original characters in her career than Julia Roberts ever will…shes infinitely more talented and honestly, JR doesn’t even belong on the same screen with her. You are right on about JR’s homewrecker status…shes a one trick pony and everyone knows it….Why can’t she just fade away…..

  12. omgz says:

muthaf-cka, what the hell. toxic anger towards a complete stranger. wtf. aren’t you all a bunch of jealous hussies. so sad. julia’s probably lovin her life and her kids and stuff and you all just hate on her like there’s no tomorrow. it’s kind of hilarious. a bunch of nobodies hating on a celebrity in a comment board. how fun! yey. cliche.

  13. Catherine says:

Julia might be a one-note actress, but her movies end up being fun to watch. A little light-heartedness never hurt.

  14. walker says:

Julia hasn’t had a hit movie in years so who cares? Apparently nobody. Husband stealer!!!

  15. Giz says:

The fact that JR is a one trick and continues to have a career is a testment to the ticket buying public’s lack of imagination and limited taste!! …However, just my opinion!

  16. Firestarter says:

@Omgz-Last I knew, comment boards on celeb sites were for opinions, pro or con. I never realized they were for non-celebs to attack others for having opinions.

Thanks for straightening that out for all of us.

  17. Ramona says:

To omgz….Who the hell do you think you are passing judgment on others, you are committing the same crime if you really want to get technical….Do you realize how juvenile you sound?? What you are really doing by your comment is calling your own self a Hypocrite! What I think you are is just a big “Suck Up”!!

  18. iris says:

Julia Roberts was rude and nasty to Danny Moder’s first wife.

She plays nice on the set to gather votes for the Oscar.

  19. jane says:

Both great talents, hard workers, and apparently very unpleasant people. Who knows the truth since none of us actually KNOW THEM.

One’s a sell-out (Roberts) and the other couldn’t be more of an original.

No tolerance here for people with incredible natural talent who become hacks, like Roberts or Whitney Houston in the music scene.

Agreed that no matter what pinnacle you reach in any field, being a nasty person to those with less is unacceptable.

That’s why it’s fun to read these websites and see behind the PR facade.

Celebrities are all a bunch of freaks.
Someone who finds criticizing them stupid is legitimizing their worth.

Shirley MacLaine is a jewel of an actress. Her performance in Being There was absolutely hilarious. (I know that goes way back, but that movie is one of my favorites.) She’s always great no matter what role she plays. Julia Roberts, on the other hand, is pretty much the same: Julia Roberts.
