Charlize Theron: ‘I did not ‘almost get married to Sean’ that’s such BS’

Premiere of 'Mad Max: Fury Road'

I love the way Charlize Theron approaches relationships and men. She basically says “who cares” and “who needs any of it.” She has her kids and her mom and if some dude wants to take her out to dinner, she’ll go, but she doesn’t need any of that. She’s been like that for years now, basically ever since she adopted her second child and since she broke up with Sean Penn in 2015. However, as much as I respect Charlize’s “I don’t need a man” vibe post-Penn, I do think she’s sort of an unreliable narrator on that relationship specifically. I have a theory about this, actually. I still believe, years later, that some very serious sh-t went down between Charlize and Penn. It was a lot like Angelina and Brad and whatever happened on the plane – something happened between Penn and Theron after which she ran screaming away from him. The split was so sudden and so dramatic, she ghosted him and he sulkily moved out of her house just days after the incident. If Charlize doesn’t want to talk about it, that’s fine and it’s her business. But she’s played a bit fast and loose with the details around that relationship, probably to protect herself and her kids. Anyway, Howard Stern asked her about Penn and she said some stuff:

Charlize Theron is setting the record straight on her former relationship with Sean Penn. The actress appeared on SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show promoting her new Netflix film The Old Guard when Howard Stern asked her about rumors she’d once been engaged to Penn, 59.

“What? That’s not true. no. I did not ‘almost get married to Sean’, that’s such bulls—,” Theron, 44, said. “No, we dated, that was literally all we did, we dated.” She continued, “It was a relationship, for sure. We were definitely exclusive, but it was for barely a year. We never moved in. I was never going to marry him. It was nothing like that.”

Penn and Theron began dating in 2013. The two split in 2015, an insider confirmed to PEOPLE at the time.

When Stern, 66, asked the Mad Max: Fury Road actress if she ever thought of marriage or felt lonely, Theron said, “I never wanted to get married. That’s never been something that’s important to me. On the lives of my children, I’ve never been lonely. I’ve never felt alone,” she said, adding she wasn’t afraid of romantic relationships. “My life right now just doesn’t allow a lot of room for something like that to happen. But in saying that, there’s not this thing that drives me [to have a romantic relationship]. I enjoy being set up on dates but I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to live with somebody again. To be totally frank, they might have to buy the house next to me. I don’t know if I’m going to be able to deal with that ever again, I’m too old for that s—.”

[From People]

The truth is that we’ll probably never know what happened between Sean and Charlize. We’ll never know how serious they actually were, whether he planned to adopt with her, whether he proposed to her, or what he did to cause the split. But I remember the stories around that time – maybe they weren’t engaged, but Sean was absolutely behaving like a father/stepfather to Jackson (Sean even brought Jackson to interviews to show off his parenting skills) and they were absolutely super-serious about one another. But whatever. I still believe Penn is trash and Charlize is better off without him. And I love that Charlize doesn’t feel the need to conform to whatever it is that women are “supposed” to do, like get married or want to cohabitate or any of that.

Also, whatever happened, it happened shortly after these 2015 Cannes photos.

She is so beautiful. I absolutely believe her when she says she never intended to marry Sean Penn. It was over in a year and she moved on.

  2. Seraphina says:

Rumor has it Sean has a temper And considering the crap she’s seen in her life and at a young age, she bolted. Good for her if that’s the case. I agree I don’t 100% buy her narrative, but it’s an image that is positive for women so I say go with it.

    • Steph says:

I mean, Sean tied Madonna naked to a chair and threatened to kill them both. He’s got more than a temper.

  3. tomato8o says:

my theory is the split may have somehow been related to his son’s racism.

    • magdalena says:

my theory is that it has something to do with her daughter’s identity… maybe he had done something, say something and Charlize was “you don’t have access to this homestead”

  4. endlesscircles says:

Two Leos. Need I say more? Damn. And Madonna is a Leo too!
    Robin is an Aires…..

    • Seraphina says:

Do tell, I know some Leos. And not Decaprio. I am curious….

      • endlesscircles says:

Two headstrong egos clashing and struggling for power all the time. Madonna was a formidable force for Sean and wouldn’t take his sh*t. I suspect neither did Charlize. Bye! Charlize would do well with a sweet and smart and patient Pisces man or Scorpio man -someone who isn’t intimated by her strong sense of self and actually appreciates it.

    • Kate says:

My best friend and my husband are Leos and I am a Virgo – which makes sense to me because it’s yin and yang energy. I can see 2 Leos getting along well for a while but not being ultimately compatible romantically. There’s no balance. For that matter, is there any sign that works if both people in a couple are that sign?

  5. sassafras says:

Yeah, I want to believe her but *someone* really led the press (and the public) to believe it was super serious. She could have come out and said, “it’s not serious” at any time. So… maybe she let it look more serious so she could get adoption approvals? IDK. Maybe it was convenient for her in some way to let that perception go on because it was ABSOLUTELY perceived that way, Charlize.

  6. Amelie says:

My theory is he had one of his infamous rages not just in front of her but also in front of the children. It’s the only thing that explains her bolting away so fast, like Angelina did with Brad. Her kids’s safety was at risk and she wasn’t going to play around with that and we all know what a monster Charlize’s dad was and how her mom killed him in self-defense. I have my own ideas about what exactly may caused her to ghost Sean as hard as she did but not going to voice that outloud. All in all, Sean is not someone who should be involved raising young kids ever.

    • Geeena says:

I tend to think along these lines, too. Maybe she downplays the seriousness in part because of hindsight and in part because she’s mad she fell for his redemption act?

  7. Yup, Me says:

I’ve always felt like something happened with her kid, like she was allowing Sean to be around her child (who is both Black and trans) and he said or did something harmful and she realized she needed to get away from him.

    • Léna says:

I kind of believe it’s what happened too, which sadly would not be surprising

    • tomato8o says:

this is similar to my theory. years ago, his eldest son was on video calling a paparazzo the n-word. she probably decided she didn’t want someone who raised a child like that around her children.

    • Tiffany says:

Beat me to it. I commented the same thing below.

  8. Tiffany says:

I totally believed it had something to do with Jackson.

Charlize now has two daughters and that is how she speaks of them in the press and Ham gotta Ham, said or did something, Charlize was not having it and bounced.

  9. Girl_ninja says:

We all know that this man has an enormous ego. And it’s rumored that he has a serious anger problem. Charlize’s mother shot and killed her father for his abuse. That kind of trauma will never leave you. Why deal with a man who is possibly abusive? If she saw that in him and was smart enough to end it I give her props.

  10. TQ says:

Glad she got away from Ham Face Sean Penn. He does seem like trash. But this seems like revisionist history to me.

  11. Sean says:

Penn is known for his temper. There’s also those allegations regarding his abuse of Madonna.

I absolutely believe he did something that sent Charlize running for the hills.

  12. Fleur says:

I was always the front of the “I don’t need a man to be happy, I don’t want to get married ever, I can’t imagine successfully living with someone” parade for YEARS. Really, truly believed was missing absolutely nothing —-until I met a man who was all sorts of things I never thought I’d find, and I discovered all the new pieces of life we could share together. It’s a hard balance. No one should feel like they have to justify single life and I very much belief that no relationship forever is way better than lowering your standards or settling for a partner who doesn’t match your needs. Still, it’s nice to keep a little window open for the possibility of healthy love.

    • TheRickestRick says:

I am in the exact same boat as you except I haven’t met that fella yet. I am okay with the fact that I may never meet that fella, but like you say it’s nice to keep the window open a crack! And your message definitely boosts that hope. So thank you for the hope today !!

      • Fleur says:

Awww! You probably won’t see this response, but honestly, that’s why I left it! It was for people like myself a year ago who worried that romantic love was some sort of delusion, that everyone in a relationship had settled beneath their own standards in some capacity. I was so jaded when I met my man that I fell very slowly and hesitantly in love (despite the fact that he was truly everything I’d hoped for). I am so glad I left that window open though. Single life is awesome and amazing! But couple life can be too, so wait until you find a guy that checks off your awesome and amazing box! Sending you good wishes for the future, whatever it holds! : )

  13. MarcelMarcel says:

    Her version is accurate.
They dated for less than a year. She pulled the plug on the relationship. She choose to keep to keep quiet on the topic instead of creating a sympathetic PR spin or mentioning the details of their breakup in interviews.
The tabloids might have extrapolated wildly or his PR agents created a narrative about marriage. From memory she basically publicly acknowledged the relationship until she decided to walk away. I don’t really see how she’s responsible for a narrative that was created by other people.
Anyhow Sean Penn is a known rage monster so I’m happy that Charlize Theron & her daughters are free of him.

  14. smee says:

My dream is to have duplex with my husband. I need my own bathroom and kitchen. I need tidiness. It would be bliss (I’ve been dreaming about this before lockdown – now I know)

    • Anonymous says:

Oh, I hear you. If money was no object my husband and I would live in separate homes right now.

  15. a says:

You know he hates this interview lol

  16. lucy2 says:

I never understood why she was with him to begin with, he seems rather unpleasant. But anyway, whatever happened she’s not telling, but she sure ended it quickly.

I love her idea of the guy buying the house next door. I don’t want anyone in my space either, LOL.

  17. Grant says:

She is breathtaking and he looks like beef jerky that was left out in the sun for too long.
