Toxic, fragile dudes refusing to wear masks will literally kill us all

GOP Policy Luncheons

When we were talking about the coronavirus-ridden Adria Tour, I made several mentions of how those dude tennis players were exhibiting toxic masculinity and male fragility. There was some confusion about that, but I stand by that assessment – toxic masculinity isn’t just “dudes being gross to women.” It’s also about dudes being toxic about health, self-care, public safety and public health. Toxic masculinity is the idea that “real men don’t wear masks” or “it’s gay to take public health precautions.” To be completely fair, the tennis dudes were not and are not the only toxic a–holes in a pandemic. All over America, dudes are arguing that they don’t need masks, that they don’t have to stay in lockdown, that public safety concerns are “unmanly” or for “simps.” This was trending over the weekend:

Yes. It’s the public health challenge of our time to massage the fragile male ego and convince these absolute dips–ts to care about other people and care about their own health. WHY ARE MEN. If we just had significantly fewer men, do you know how much more peaceful our society would be? Well, it looks like that’s going to happen anyway – three and a half months into lockdown, and all we’ve got to show for it is that for most part, women wear masks and men don’t.

It’s also gotten so bad that VP Mike Pence – who heads up the Struggle Task Force on coronavirus – has said explicitly that people need to wear masks. He said that right before he headed off to a church service in Texas (which is having a huge spike in cases) in which the 100-person choir sang (ugh) and no one wore masks. Not just Mother’s Husband either – Moscow Mitch McConnell tweeted this:

And finally, I’m adding some photos of some dudes in masks. Here are Chris Pine with a bag of books, Colin Jost just wearing a mask to run some errands in the Hamptons, Miles Teller wearing a mask for a CVS run, Mother’s Husband on one his rare mask-wearing jaunts, and Dick Cheney of all people, advocating for mask-wearing.

The fragile male ego…Of course when they were having their racist protests and parades, they had NO problem strapping on tactical vests and covering their faces. That’s okay.

But wearing a mask to protect yourself and above all, protect those around you? That’s not fReEdoM. Something something…mah RiGhts something something TRUMP.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

Just make the masks in camouflage print, with pictures of guns on them. Then the insecure babies can feel masculine while wearing them.

  2. Piratewench says:

Toxic toxic men, they ruin society completely. It’s like we have women, children, normal men, and then we have a large contingent of beings that look like men but they are more akin to half-braindead gorillas who have undergone a testosterone experiment gone wrong.
I don’t hate men. But there’s a subset of men that I agree are ruining society and always have done. When I think of the men in my life: my gentle giant father, my hard working and compassionate husband, my dear sweet and caring friends, I can’t even put them in the same category as the kind of men who tote guns and get violent, who wear white hoods and wave confederate flags and risk the lives of others just so they can feel macho. The latter bring shame on mankind.

But then there are some shameful women too, they just aren’t as physically scary but they can be just as evil minded.

    • Meghan says:

My city is now requiring masks and a lot of businesses have put up the “must wear mask to enter” signs and there was a news article about how many complaints are being filed for it. On the article comments there are SO MANY women complaining about masks and their “medical problems” and they will take their money elsewhere and oh wont we think about the poor struggling businesses who need our money, mask or not?

Ma’am, no one is asking you to run a marathon in the heat with a mask on. We’re asking you to keep your spot droplets to yourself and protect those who are trying to serve you. I work in Hospitality and was honestly relieved to find out I’m still furloughed for 3 or more months so I don’t have to deal with cooties and angry guests.

      • Megan says:

And to those who want to “help” small business but won’t wear a mask… what do you think is going to happen to that small business you “care” so much about when there is an outbreak there and they have to completely shut down for days?? Selfish idiots.

  3. LaraW” says:

Well you know. Twice as many men die from covid than women- this is well established scientific fact. Maybe seeing an image of a covid lung, removed during a double lung transplant procedure, might change their minds. Probabaly not.

Image in the link below. Photo from the surgery is at the end of the article. Warning: it is a really gross picture.

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2020/06/11/chicago-woman-gets-double-lung-transplant-after-coronavirus-damage/5341482002/

    • Grace says:

Holy moly! That lung! That’s the worse I’ve seen!

    • H says:

Thank you for sharing. I’m posting this on my FB for my “I won’t wear a mask because my freedums” friends. Those lungs came from a healthy 20-something! Wow.

  4. BlueSky says:

Toxic masculinity is the real public health issue. These men are going to kill us all with their fragility.

    • LaraW” says:

Toxic masculinity, but also the Republican party. Apparently it’s time to get serious about masks when your base is dying. TX covid numbers are through the roof and KY is seeing a significant increase. Can’t get elected into office when your supporters are all dead.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Exactly this. All these republicans suddenly changing their tune are a day late and a dollar short.

      • Lua says:

Add antivaxxers to the list. I have a friend of a friend on Facebook and I kind of creep on her posts and read them to my husband for a good laugh. They’re all commenting about how masks are a violation of their rights! I thought their argument was that they wanted the right to choose what is injected into their bodies, but they’re definitely proving they’re just selfish a$$holes with the antimask stance. It has nothing to do with vaccines. One antivaxxer tried to tell me she was high risk and still had the right to not wear a mask and it wasn’t her job to care about anyone’s health but her own 🙄

      • petee says:

Lua that’s all I see on Facebook. It drive’s me crazy.Where I live it’s hotter then hell but I wear one if I have to go out so I just stay home most of the time.Selfish people out there.Trump zombies.

      • Prayer Warrior says:

@ Lua, @Kaiser @Celebitchy Blue Sky makes them out of bamboo. I sweat as my work is physical and theirs have proved comfortable and bonus, they do not fog up my glasses with every breath. They have fogged up, not as often . They carry some in that ‘army’ olive-khaki-green, though i think it’s black etched tree of life branches, not ‘camo’ exactly. Highly recommend for comfort, breath-ability and stylishness 🙂 They also have matching bamboo gloves and masks sets!!!!!

    • lucy2 says:

Always has been, unfortunately probably always will be. Toxic masculinity is the root of SOOOO many problems in the world.

Though I do see a lot of stupid women shrieking about the masks also.

  5. Feebee says:

It’s pretty hard not to just be pissed off at guys these days. I better do the ‘not all guys’ of course but this post hits the nail on the head.

  6. StephB says:

In this instance, I think we should be way more clear. Specifically calling out white fragile toxic male ego. This story is about the white bro culture of not following the rules because they never have to.

    • Royalwatcher says:

^^^^ This!!! And I’d add white women Karens to this as well. They voted for tRump and they’re the ones all over the place not wearing masks and breathing/coughing in people’s faces.

    • Esmom says:

Yes, I feel like that aspect wasn’t explicit in this post. Most men of color I know seem to have no problem wearing masks. I was recently in a predominantly Black neighborhood and saw far more masks there — really, everyone was wearing them including kids and teens, than in my own predominantly white neighborhood. Sigh.

  7. JJ McClay says:

If only their stupid fragile actions would only harm their stupid fragile selves.

    • Betsy says:

Precisely. It’s just a bummer that they themselves will largely escape the consequences of their actions.

  8. Darla says:

Chris Pine looking fine and making a play to unseat Evans as the best Chris on Darla’s list! He can’t unseat him, but he’s moved on him! A mask AND a bag of books. Damn.

    • Becks1 says:

Right??? I saw that picture and I thought “he is looking good” lol.

    • LadyMTL says:

This is pretty much exactly what I was coming here to say, lol. Chris Pine has been my perennial number 2, but I think he’s now taken the top spot away from Evans…books, mask, and those legs!

If Captain Kirk can wear a mask, these fragile ‘but my freedomz!’ dudes have no excuse.

      • Darla says:

Evans cannot be unseated in my Chris ratings, he can only unseat himself. He’d have to do something f’d up. (and I don’t think that’s impossible, believe me, men are men!) But Pine definitely moved on him, like, he moved from way 2nd place, to close 2nd place. lol

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Evans has moved into my 2nd place, replacing Hemsworth – primarily after his recent Graham Norton interview and his cute jumper wearing dog. Plus I watched Knives Out – he was underused in that.

      • Agirlandherdog says:

Chris Pine has never ranked highly on my Chris list, but those quads… damn.

    • Mrs.Krabapple says:

I like Pine . . . but his mask is not appropriate. It looks like it has a valve on it, which does not protect other people (it will only protect the person wearing it). A simple cloth covering would actually be better.

    • H says:

Chris Pine is the BEST Chris. Fight me on this. Nothing sexier than a man who went to Berkley and reads!!! He’s mine (and I’m a lesbian).

  9. FancyCatsup says:

Dick Cheney had a heart transplant and would have to be on immunosuppressive meds for life. He probably had to wear a mask pre-pandemic, especially in the months right after the surgery. Not a fan! But many people had to wear them before.

    • Badrockandroll says:

I have become so cynical … I truly believe that Cheney and The Turtle are wearing masks in a desperate attempt to appear reasonable and science-y to prevent moderate GOP voters from fleeing in November. And I believe that Mother’s Husband does not wear a mask because it is impossible to kiss 45’s ample a$$ when one’s mouth is covered – that is also why you have not seen Lady G in a mask.

  10. Digital Unicorn says:

I have ZERO tolerance for toxic and fragile masculinity – its the cause of so much pain in the world.

On a side note – my fave Chris looks HOT with his mask. He gets extra hotness points for carrying a bag full of books.

  11. Mia4s says:

So if wearing a mask is not “manly”, then why the HELL did I have to sit through 6,912 f**king superhero movies for the past 12 years?!? How about this? Wear a mask and we will find a CGI alien or a beam of light in the sky for you to punch. 🙄

    Toxic masculinity is a disease.

  12. Kenn says:

Gee, calling out people for not wearing masks due to ethnic background. Seems a bit karen-ish? Ya think?

  13. Izzy says:

Imagine feeling so insecure about the size of your dick that you refuse to wear a mask that might save your life and that of others. SMH

  14. Lizzie says:

I’ve been thinking that Russian bots are behind the online rage against wearing masks.

I mean this is something that doctors wear regularly. You would think by the level of outrage they were being asked to wear hair curlers. Smells like Putin.

    • lucy2 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were behind a big misinformation campaign. All they have to do is plant a few seeds, and the hateful morons in this country run with it.

it’s infuriating. These are the same people screaming to open the economy, and when we start to and say “ok, just keep 6′ apart and wear a mask and you can get a haircut again” they all scream NO!. And we’re right back where we started.

    • JJ says:

Russia has also contributed to that anti-vax movement, in terms of their online trolling an similar activities, so you may be onto something there.

    • Mel M says:

Yep right back to the beginning and the rest of the world is just shaking it’s head and closing it’s boarders because, these self righteous morons, will never change. Like someone else said up top, these people have never had to follow the rules so why start now? America is not a place where people are willing to sacrifice, and in this case VERY little, for the good of the whole and they never will. Because that stuff is socialism or communism and that’s the devil.

I also think a lot of the mask wearing resistance is from the antivax community and those are a minority of white women. I follow a few of those women on IG and they aren’t these huge MAGAs and although I knew they were natural based I had no idea they would be the anti mask people too, they all have small kids.
At the beginning, I actually DMd one who happens to be an RN but quit her job right before all of this and I asked her what she says to all of the frontline workers who were going on social media and telling everyone the horrors they were seeing and how their ICUs were full and how they’ve never seen anything like this even in the worst flu seasons and although she read my message she never replied and she has in the past. If you are going to spout off all of these things about how it’s just the flu and the govt is brainwashing you they you better be able to answer a simple question like that.
They all think that this is being blown way out of proportion, that one of the reasons it is is because the govt wants to be able to mandate the vaccine and make it illegal not to get it which will then lead to all vaccines being illegal not to get. Some are super Christian but some aren’t. I haven’t been on IG in probably a month because frankly I couldn’t take social media anymore so I don’t know what they have been saying lately about this resurgence but I’m guessing they aren’t bothered.

  15. Miss Grace Jones says:

Lmao, this is why I hate men.

  16. Leah says:

It’s the male ego which they think it’s more important than anything. I mean it’s not as if they are being asked to sacrifice a limb or something. These guys need to grow up.

  17. Betsy says:

    Mask it or casket.

And bless you, Kaiser, for including those pics of Chris Pine, my imaginary husband.

  18. Boo says:

I’d like to see Mitch continue wearing a mask after all this is over. Or better yet, lose his seat and go tf away forever.

  19. Kelly says:

Was just saying that over the weekend my sister and girlfriend had a blast swapping photos online of cute masks that would coordinate with our outfits and ordered them for each other. It is telling that some men resist masks altogether, some women see it as an opportunity for fun self-expression. That is to say, a reason to acquire more accessories. You can’t have too many shoes, handbags, and now, masks!

    • L84Tea says:

I ordered a red gingham mask from Etsy and I am so excited to get it in the mail becausae it is so cute and reminds me of my childhood late 70’s clothes.

  20. Thinking says:

Where I live we have no Covid. We had it before but it swept through all the nursing homes and took a lot of DNR elderly people. Then it kinda burnt itself out I guess ? Where I live too it is a real poor economy. You go to the lakes and beaches here since mid May and there are hundreds of kids not social distancing and Costco/Walmart etc is packed. Literally about 2 % of people wear masks and always take their mask down to talk when they see people they know (which I think kinda defeats the purpose?). So I dont understand why there is so much Covid in the States ? Is it a blood type thing ? Do you have a lot of people traveling in from other countries? Esp since you seem to wear masks more there. And it cant be an obesity thing coz we have a lot of obese people here . Does anyone understand the epidemioligy on this thing ? You guys are still doing better than France for ex. for deaths per million. But it sounds like everyone is super panicked there. I guess it could flair back up here.

    • lucy2 says:

Because we have a demented clown as president, it was up to each state to set their own rules. Some were strict, some were not. The ones who were not allowed the virus to spread in their area, and beyond.

  21. a reader says:

When Dick Cheney makes you look like an assh*le……

  22. Sheila D says:

Well in GA cases are spiking again since so many re-openings. I barely see any facemasks and while most stores are limiting customers, don’t see the social distancing like a month ago. Since I have medical issues my mask is on everytime I am around people, plus hand washing, and sanitizer. But I am truly panicked, if others aren’t taking any precautions not much can be safe. I guess when the ICU’s are filled and can’t take more patients people will pay attention?

  23. Eugh says:

That Chris Pine photo needs to be front and center for the movement!

  24. Sarah says:

All these folks who are screaming about freedoms and re-opening the economy…you are making it worse. And not just for America, but other countries who ARE taking this seriously and our economy is suffering as a result. As just one example, the Canadian tourism economy is in shambles.

Wear. A. Mask. We’re trying to have a civilization here.

    • Darla says:

Sarah they don’t care about other countries at all, if they can inflict pain on other countries, that’s a bonus point for them.

      • Sarah says:

That’s my point. Hurting the Canadian economy (America’s biggest trading partner) is beyond stupid even from that very selfish perspective.

When America sneezes, the world catches a cold. Literally.

  25. Regina Falangie says:

    Follow the money.
Trump invested in Hydrocloxie (or how ever it’s spelled). He refuses to wear a mask and has turned it political so that more will get sick so more of the medicine he invested in is purchased. The less people wear masks more people get sick more money in his pocket. Evil.

  26. EllaBella says:

We are our own worst enemy.
Other alien life form out in the universe, if that’s so, must pity our kind.
“No point invading that planet, too easy they’re killing each other!”

  27. Jaded says:

So I live in Canada, on Vancouver Island, which currently has zero new COVID cases and a very small number of active cases. We are are being inundated with boaters coming up from Cali, Oregon, Washington states, pulling up to marinas and swarming grocery stores, bars, restaurants, etc. by Americans who refuse to social distance or wear masks. The border remains closed but it’s easy to sneak onto the Island from the water. They “say” they’re going to Alaska so why aren’t they stopping on the San Juan Islands or Port Angeles to fuel up, buy food and go on their merry ways? It’s getting to the point where they’re being refused service. Generally they’re wealthy bros and bro-ettes in huge boats with a massive sense of entitlement. I’m not dissing Americans in general, just the ones who won’t respect Canadian regulations. Rant over.

  28. SM says:

So stupid. I find that masks add some hot to all these men provided as exhibits in this post. With the exception of Pence of course.

  29. Alice says:

Remember when Trump said keeping the infections to a hundred thousand would be a win? Now you guys are recording 40,000 a day. The Fauch says you could be hitting one hundred thousand a day soon. Holy-f*ck-a-roli 😳

  30. JanaTHING says:

I believe the men who refuse to wear face masks are the same men who refuse to go down on women…just saying.

  31. Nightsky says:

I rarely see men wearing masks where I live. But when I do I want to hug them….at a 2 meter distance. Depressing that macho pride can mean so many more infected people and deaths. Although there are a lot of dumbass women putting us at risk too. 🙁

  32. AppleTartin says:

Where I live in Queens NY (2 miles from a Covid dedicated hospital) the majority of men I see do not wear masks. Or keep them around their necks. They are also usually filthy looking and have been worn about 40 times. I will say the stores around here are militant about wearing masks while shopping. I was picking up dinner and a guy walked in no mask, the owner threw him right out. There is also someone usually manning the front of stores to keep people coming in one at a time and masks must be worn.

I hardly go out when I do my blood boils seeing the cavalier attitude of people who think this virus won’t touch them. It will.
