Zoe Kravitz criticizes Hulu for cancelling her ‘High Fidelity’ series after one season

For months, Zoe Kravitz has been doing press in support of the first season of High Fidelity, the TV series based on the Nick Hornby book of the same name, which was already adapted into a film back in the ‘90s. Producers flipped races and genders on the lead character so that Zoe would play the commitment-phobic, music-obsessed proto-hipster “Rob” (Robyn in the show). I still haven’t watched it, but I enjoyed Zoe’s interviews in support of the show and you can tell that she really cared about the project and she was happy to promote it. Well, Hulu cancelled the series after the first season. The cancellation just happened a few days ago. Zoe posted the Instagram above, and she ended up getting into in the comments:

One day after Hulu canceled her series “High Fidelity” after one season, star Zoë Kravitz called out the streaming service for not having shows with much diversity. Kravitz took to her Instagram on Thursday to post some behind-the-scenes photos with her “High Fidelity” cast members after news broke that the show was canceled.

“I wanna give a shout out to my #highfidelity family. Thank you for all the love and heart you put into this show. I’m in awe of all of you. And thank you to everyone who watched, loved and supported us. #breakupssuck,” she wrote.

Several actors, including Tessa Thompson, Reese Witherspoon, Halle Berry and others, commented on the photos, offering condolences that the show will not continue.

“I will miss you alllllllllllll so much,” Thompson commented.

Kravitz replied to her, “It’s cool. At least Hulu has a ton of other shows starring women of color we can watch. Oh wait.”

She’s right. There are not many shows with a Black woman as the lead. In this particular case, I think Zoe feels especially stung because she loved the character so much and because she thought this particular representation was important, the Black music nerd, the Black woman who sucked at relationships, etc. There was so much to mine there. But nope, no more.

This was an awesome little show and I’m sad to see it won’t be returning. Rob is a great character who felt genuinely unique for a woman of color to be playing. We need more diverse stories and characters, and this was an example of that.

  2. Gabriella says:

And this project also probably meant a lot because her mom was in the movie. I’m super sad about this cancellation.

  3. Sam the Pink says:

Ehhh. I watched it. I did not like it. I think partly for me was because I just don’t think I want to really watch any more shows about introspective, navel-gazing hipsters – regardless of their race or gender. It wasn’t an issue of Zoe, it was an issue of “there are such important stories going on right now, the world is full of them, this isn’t the story we need now.” Especially a remake.

    • SM says:

Exactly this. I just looked at the promo and trailers and it looks like a total average snooze fest with self absorbed hipsters. No chance in hell I am even starting this show when there is so much quality tv.

    • Samanthalous says:

Exactly did not watch rolled my eyes when I saw the preview.

    • Alissa says:

I watched the first two episodes and found myself really bored and stopped.

  4. Jegede says:

    The show sucked.

    And that black friend stereotype…..🤮🤮

    • reef says:

thank you! Frankly, PValley is better if you’re interested in shows starring Black women/WOC.

  5. Lori says:

I watched it wanting to like it, didnt like it…..

  6. minx says:

Sorry, it was not that great.

  7. Mabs A'Mabbin says:

I love her. I simply didn’t like the show.

  8. Lena says:

Came here to stay the same. Wanted to like it although I’m pretty much blah on remakes in general or that just switch gender/race. But willing to see that in this case it might make sense. But no, it wasn’t good enough Imo.

  9. DiegoInSF says:

This didn’t look interesting to me like the John Cusack movie didn’t either. I am LOVING I May Destroy You on Hbo Max though, all of its main characters Are Black British! The creator is the star too!

    • lucy2 says:

I May Destroy you is incredible! I’m a few episodes behind, but it’s so good – devastating, but good.

I liked High Fidelity, I’m kind of sad it’s not coming back.

  10. Dee Kay says:

I loved High Fidelity s1 with all my heart and am devastated it got cancelled after one season. However, lots of great TV series only got one season and I’ll be grateful that we got a complete arc that I can rewatch.

  11. Chimney says:

There are so few shows with black women as leads. Even fewer where they are just people and not endlessly sufferer against white people and their injustices. I’m sad to see this one go.

  12. Esp.Lumiere says:

I really enjoyed the show. What a shame.

  13. Rural Juror says:

I liked High Fidelity, but was surprised to see that another season was even an option. Given the story arc and the way it ended, I had sort of assumed that it was intended to be essentially a miniseries.

  14. SKE says:

Hated the book, hated the movie, loved the show. The whole cast was great and Zoe did a great job in this role. Sorry to see it go.

  15. SKF says:

Really enjoyed this show. What a shame.

  16. Catharine J Page says:

I stan Zoe Kravitz, but just wasn’t the target audience for the show (condescending music hipsters make me cringe).

Hulu can make it up to all of us by giving her a different, ORIGINAL show.
