Liv Tyler is leaving ‘9-1-1: Lone Star’ due to traveling issues: will you still watch it?

One of the shows I discovered early in the pandemic was 9-1-1: Lone Star, the 9-1-1 spinoff with Rob Lowe, Liv Tyler and a bunch of awesome newcomers set in Texas, obviously. It’s ridiculous, bonkers, action-filled and so much dumb fun. I talked about it on podcast #52. Liv Tyler was one of the highlights of that show. While she’s not an amazing actress she has such a soothing voice and sweet energy. I’ve always enjoyed watching her. Her character Michelle’s story arc was about the search for her missing sister. I won’t give away spoilers except to say that this storyline was concluded in the first season. Anyway Liv is leaving the show! Her character isn’t being replaced and maybe she’ll return at some point. Gina Torres (Suits) is coming on for season two as another character who runs Liv’s paramedic team. Deadline reports that it was Liv’s idea to leave as the traveling logistics were too difficult. Liv has son Milo, 15, with her ex husband, Royston Langdon, and son Sailor, 5, and daughter Lula, 4, with her partner, British sports manager Dave Gardner. Liv sold her apartment in New York last fall and she and her family now live in London.

Liv Tyler is exiting the breakout show, on which she starred opposite Rob Lowe, due to circumstances related to family and travel during the pandemic…

Tyler’s character Michelle Blake, the paramedic Emergency Medical Services captain, will not be recast, with a possibility for her to return. The void of Tyler’s departure will be filled next season by the addition of Gina Torres as Paramedic Captain Tommy Vega…

The Lord of the Rings actress had been commuting between London and Los Angeles, where 9-1-1: Lone Star films. I hear that, with some intricate scheduling and her kids joining her in Los Angeles for shoots during vacations, she successfully went back and forth last season without being away from her children for long.

9-1-1: Lone Star was supposed to start production in the summer while kids are still out of school. Instead, the show is tentatively slated to begin filming Season 2 on October 12. Commuting on long-haul flights during a pandemic is inherently risky. Add to that the implications of a looming second COVID wave, which led to new restrictions in the UK announced today. Another travel ban or more mandatory quarantines could leave commuters stranded for weeks, which would’ve impacted Tyler and her family as well as 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s production.

[From Deadline]

I checked out Liv’s ex husband, British musician Royston Langdon’s Instagram, and it looks like he lives in the UK and sees his son frequently. So Liv would have been moving her son away from his dad if she brought him with her, plus she has the two little ones. Kids can pick up things so easily and it’s understandable that it would be too tough to travel now. This show isn’t one of my favorites or anything, it was just a fun and unexpected distraction. I will probably still watch it, but it’s not like I have to catch every episode. There’s so much good TV that it won’t matter too much. I do wonder if we’ll start to run out of new shows in a year or two though. It’s not like we can’t rewatch our favorites though. Plus there’s always YouTube.

I wish Liv Instagrammed more. Her little girl has the cutest British accent!

I enjoyed it for what it is and liked all the newcomers more than the established stars, hopefully we’ll see more of them in the next season. I liked Liv in it, but it felt like a very strange pairing so I wasn’t surprised she was leaving it, even without the travel complications. I’m glad her story wrapped up and she’s not being killed off.

    • Jennifer says:

Connie Britton left the first 911 show and it turned out well. Jennifer Love Hewitt is not my favorite actress but her character is fun. I imagine that these shows will function like ER did and you can rotate out the entire original cast at some point without losing anything.

  2. Lucy2 says:

Never watched it, but I can imagine that was very difficult for her, so much traveling and time away from home.
I remember the tour of her New York brownstone, it was really beautiful! Kind of bummed she sold it.

    • Valiantly Varnished says:

I was just thinking the same thing. I watched that tour as well and it makes me sad thar she sold it. That home was gorgeous

  3. Sabrina says:

I didn’t care much for her character so I’m not sad to see her go. Based on the comments on another site most people feel the same way that I do.

  4. Tiffany says:

Her ex Royston has a place in NYC along with his place in London. I follow he and Liv on IG and it seems she and Royston have a solid relationship/agreement regarding Milo.

Naw, this is all David. I can totally see he telling her to come home. She admitted in a interview that he was the reason she picked up and moved to London full time.

    That dude just smells trouble.

  5. Job says:

I read somewhere that people think the coronavirus is going to get worse with the cool weather. It’s a good thing she’s staying in London.

I’ve always loved Liv. She’s so beautiful and has a sweet voice.

  6. Nikki* says:

Putting the bitchy in: I love her too, but I don’t think bangs are the best look for her. She’s SO stunning, but between the bangs and the boxy jacket, she looks so ordinary here.

  7. Emily says:

I 100% watch for Rob Lowe so I won’t miss her character.

  8. ChloeCat says:

I hate to say it, but the Lone Star version of 911 is not that great but I’ll probably continue to watch it. I enjoy the LA version so much. Liv is a terrible actress & her voice sounds a bit ridiculous. The flirtatious tension between her character & Rob Lowe’s character was also silly. I will not miss her on this show.

  9. Anna says:

I can’t watch her in anything after watching The Leftovers. Her character scared me so bad, that’s all I see now when I look at her.

  10. Blerg says:

Did you ever see the Architecural Digest video of Liv giving a tour of her (gorgeous) house? I rewatch it regularly because it is so soothing and lovely.
