Kamala Harris & her husband Doug Emhoff got a nice People Mag profile

It would have been interesting to see what Kamala Harris and Doug Emhoff would have done in a non-pandemic election year. Would there be more of an emphasis on their marriage? Would we be talking about the “Second Gentleman” thing? Would there have been larger conversations about modern marriages and interracial marriages and all of that? Because it felt like those conversations were largely missing. While I’m glad that no one put much negativity on Kamala and Doug, I also feel like they maybe missed an opportunity to lean into their own very cute personal, romantic, modern narrative. Doug clearly adores his wife, and she seems to lean on his support significantly. They’re just cute together. So, with just days to go in the election, Kamala and Doug have a really nice soft-focus profile in People Mag. Some highlights:

Kamala & Doug stay connected all day: The couple, who met on a blind date in 2013 and married the next year, have mostly keep separate campaign schedules in order to cover more ground. “We stay connected all day,” says Emhoff, an attorney and the potential first “second gentleman. Hopefully we get to stay together at night. And then we really get to catch up and compare notes of what we’re hearing out there in the real world. That helps drive the campaign as we’re really responding to what’s going on out there.”

When they do get home, they share chores: On those rare and fleeting occasions when her and her husband’s separate travel schedules overlap for a layover at their condo in Washington, D.C., it’s a race to tend to the pileup of household chores. “We are a partnership,” says Emhoff. “It’s a lot of planning. Typically, we get up early, we work out and then we sit down and it’s like, ‘Let’s have a meeting and figure out how we’re going to get through these next couple of days.’ That includes getting dinner and figuring out laundry, mail. All that stuff that doesn’t stop, and we still need to do it.”

Doug is easy-going: Harris says it helps that her “Dougie,” as she calls Emhoff, is patient and laughs easily. The campaign is “obviously very stressful. We’re talking about the free world,” she says. “These are serious times and the challenges are incredibly serious, but we don’t take ourselves too seriously in the context of our relationship. You just have to flow and know what’s really important.”

[From People]

I imagine Doug is very easy-going… with Kamala. I think he’s probably as much of a badass as a lawyer as his wife, or else Kamala wouldn’t be with him. But for her, he probably takes it easy and is there to support her. Which is a lovely dynamic.

The Knot did a nice write-up about everything they’ve said about their relationship and marriage – go here to see.

Looking forward to address Kamala as Madame Vice President-elect

Its interesting to me that posters on this blog seem to have short term memory from 2019 when Harris could not even get 3% of her constituents to vote for her vs. Biden. Or when she tore Biden apart on the debate floor for his allegations of being inappropriate with touching and feeling others who came forth with allegations.

Or, her dismal record when she was DA, of imprisoning young black men for possession of marijuana. She is a hero now? A role model for the first female VP and WOC?

Kneepads spent years with a married Congressman to literally sleep her way to the top. She is not someone I look up to at all, nor is she thoroughly qualified to be a VP or our next President which is what she will become if Biden wins.

Im not sorry, but she has a past and I dont think it lines up with what all of America is looking for. Just no, thank you.

I don’t think Trump and Pence are what America can take anymore. Just no, but thank you, as well

Would he be the “second” gentleman? Second requires a first, but Jill Biden would be the first lady, so I think he might be the first gentleman, technically at least. (this isn’t a hill I’ll die on. If people say he’s the second gentleman, then he’s the second gentleman, even if there’s no first gentleman).

    • Chrissy says:

I guess “second” in this case means second in seniority? I love how he’s put his own job on hold to support his wife and ultimately, his country. Go Kamala!

    • Lightpurple says:

He would be the first Second Gentleman.

    • MissMarierose says:

He’d be Second Gentleman because he’s the husband of the Vice President. Like now, Karen Pence is the Second Lady.

      • AMA1977 says:

The title “Second Lady” is even more ridiculous than “First Lady.” I don’t know what should replace it (“Spouse of the President/Vice President” perhaps?) but I am sure that Jill Biden and Doug Emhoff will run circles around the trash pretending to do those jobs now. Please, universe, let it be so!! Let us have nice, civic-minded, accomplished, supportive, empathetic people in all of these roles starting in January!!

      • Sa says:

@MissMarierose, The Vice President’s wife has always been the “Second Lady,“ because the President’s wife has always been “First Lady.“

If the President’s spouse is not the “first” to make the Vice President’s spouse the “second” of that thing, then I’m not sure that the Vice President’s spouse isn’t technically the “first” In that situation. In other words, there needs to be a “First Gentleman“ in order for there to be a “Second Gentleman.“ It seems we (America) have settled on “Second Gentleman” regardless of whether there’s a first, so I have no problem going with the crowd and calling him that, I’m just not sure it’s technically correct.

I follow Doug on Twitter. He adds a nice, light, supportive touch to the campaign and his exchanges with Jill Biden are fun.

  4. starryfish29 says:

They are so sweet together and he is proudly a card-carrying member of the ‘My Wife’ club.

  5. Sofia says:

I hope this time next week, she’s Vice President elect Kamala Harris and he’s future Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff

  6. Kittylouise says:

Please please please win next week.

  7. Jess says:

I love her, I don’t know how anyone could NOT love her. She’s so charismatic, intelligent, and well spoken. I don’t want to get my hopes up for next week though, so I’m just thinking Trump will win and it will feel even worse than it did in 2016, it’s 2020 after all, that’s how it goes.

  8. Tiffany says:

I say this with all genuine sincerity, Doug know who he married. This was always going to be the end game and he knew it.

January 21st cannot get here fast enough.

  9. KBur says:

I like reading about her as a stepmother. The Knot link has a section on that and it’s worth reading.

  10. Milkweed says:

They’re a tad too shmoopie for me, but I am not complaining. They’re a bright light compared to the marriages currently in the White House.

  11. Jaded says:

    Her sneakers are everything.

  12. Dee Kay says:

I feel robbed of getting to see Bill Clinton as First Gentleman, giving interviews about the Christmas trees and china patterns he picked out and what he’s going to do for the Easter Egg roll etc. I’ve begun to dream of one day seeing Doug Emhoff in that role. When Kamala Harris is POTUS, Doug Emhoff will be a terrific first First Gentleman, and I look forward to seeing his choices in holiday decorations!!

    • Blueskies says:

Agreed re: Bill Clinton. I think he would have had fun with it. Not to mention an excellent support to the president. Sigh, what might have been x infinity.

  13. sassafras says:

I love Kamala and Doug’s relationship and I’ve loved the connection between Chasten Buttegeig and Doug and Jill. We know that Jill worked closely with Michelle so I feel like she’ll have great ideas about how to bring Doug into the “job” on his own terms. I can see Doug really bringing in a beautiful rainbow coalition to promote great causes, without it being a typical “second lady” type role.

  14. Chimes@Midnight says:

I didn’t realize she hadn’t taken her husband’s last name. I hope Republicans never learn this. There will not be enough pearls to go around if they all clutch them at once.

  15. Savannah says:

Love them and love her! She has really shined on the campaign trail.
