Pete Buttigieg will probably be Joe Biden’s Transportation Secretary? Which doesn’t seem like a particularly good fit. [Towleroad]

Hell to the yes. I’ve always liked and trusted him. He spoke truth to power. Love him.

  2. VS says:

I hope he does………..he is absolutely brilliant! He did amazing work down the stretch

  3. Div says:

DOT often goes to former mayors, so it’s not that weird of a fit. Also, if he wants to run in the future….if he lives in Virginia and works as Transpo Sec for 3 odd years…it would give him a good springboard to run for congress.

I think the main issue is he turned down the VA & then Biden’s team had to scramble to find something else since he’s not exactly qualified for some of the positions & the diplomatic world would have been pissed if he had been assigned UN Sec.

*I honestly don’t understand why VA is considered a dead end job…all the bureaucratic tape maybe?…and commerce, secretary, and HUD are seen as “better” appointments with SOS, Treasury, DOD, etc. being the big ones.

    • Rapunzel says:

Where did you hear he turned down the VA?

I hope Tammy Duckworth is in consideration for that.

    • Mac says:

Pete’s experience at McKinsey makes him well qualified for DoT. A lot of future modeling and forecasting goes into infrastructure planning. Pete was not offered the VA position.

    • Flamingo says:

I love Pete, but he is going to have a really hard time running for Congress or especially senate in Indiana. Look at the county by county map of the presidential election in Indiana. Outside of Indianapolis and the college towns, (South Bend, West Lafayette, Bloomington) it’s as red as red gets. Joe Donnelly who was a republican lite that called himself a democrat made it one term as a senator. He made some hilariously cringey commercials where he was like, “look guys! I’m barely a democrat!” and still lost.

      • mellie says:

Yeah, we suck here (not sarcasm!)….I live in Bloomington, one of the few sane places in the state 🙂

      • Kealeen says:

Yeah, I live in South Bend, and Pete has no chance of winning our Congressional district. Our do-nothing Congresswoman Jackie Walorski just won re-election, and is one of the 126 Republicans refusing to acknowledge Biden’s win. It’s sad, but Indiana has gotten so red, that Pete’s best chance is another run for POTUS, or getting the VP slot. I did chuckle when I read about Sec. of Transportation, because he installed a zillion bike lanes when he was mayor.

      • Emm says:

Agreed but don’t forget Lake Co. and Porter is purple IMO even though magas make the most noise. I also forgot that we still can’t purchase alcohol after 8pm on Sunday, until last night when I tried to buy it for cooking, and that was just legalized after years of not being able to purchase alcohol on Sunday’s period. This place is going backwards fast which means we are trying to get out of here ASAP.

      • DebraSam says:

        Hi Emm,
Nice to see purple NWI represent!

      • Emm says:

Hi @debra! Yeah, I was born here, moved when I was about four, reluctantly moved back about five years ago and am moving back out hopefully in the next year.

I’d be very happy to see Pete in a position though! The trouble with so many of the people we would want to see is that there are very necessary where they are. (Like Elizabeth Warren for instance). I trust Pete to get up to speed!

  5. olliesmom says:

I hope that Mayor Pete gets some type of position. He’s awesome and his talent should not go to waste.

There is so much talent in people who are already in the Senate or Congress. But do we want to take them away from those positions for a cabinet position?

    • Josie Bean says:

Totally agree with what you said about Mayor Pete. I just love him.

    • Tiffany :) says:

I completely agree. He’s got a lot of talent, and I think giving him a position where he can use his talents outside of Indiana is a good move.

    • BeanieBean says:

FWIW, the guys on Pod Save America thought he’d be great as Ambassador to China. Can’t remember why, though. In any case, I think he’s brilliant & he is definitely destined for something in the national political sphere.

  6. Busyann says:

Yeeeeeessss Mayor Pete!!!!! I love him and see this as just the beginning of a long career nationally for him! But he’s still a little green, so I think this is a great stepping stone. I must say, all of Biden’s picks have been good so far imo. Apparently Keisha Lance Bottoms declined a position in his admin…..I wonder why?

Also, all of the ODLR pieces are drool worthy. What’s weird is I saw the green and white piece (#25/29) and instantly wished Hailey Bieber could wear it. It would be great on her.

  7. Mumbles says:

No transportation experience. Give him something he has experience in. I don’t think it will happen. Biden has a close insider circle dating back 50 years in politics.

  8. Snazzy says:

I know he’s not super famous, but John Le Carré died yesterday – aged 89. RIP to the master of the cold war spy novel

  9. Lauren says:

I admit I had to Google “what does the transportation secretary do” and this is what was returned. Apparently Mitch McConnells wife has this post currently…

“The Secretary of Transportation serves as a principal advisor to the President and oversees the formulation of national transportation policy and promote intermodal transportation. Other responsibilities include negotiating implementing international transportation agreements, assuring the fitness of US airlines, issuing regulations to prevent alcohol and illegal drug and misuse in transportation systems, and preparing transportation legislation.”

    • Diane says:

Thanks Lauren for posting that definition. If I understand it, then we might finally get someone qualified to begin infrastructure change / improvements in this country.

    • Southern Fried says:

Elaine Chou is Moscow Mitch’s wife and she’s a dirty lying, thief also. They’ve made millions while in office by using her parents as their personal money launderers. Good riddance to that republican scum.

  10. Nina Simone says:

    Anyone but Rahm Emanuel.

  11. lucy2 says:

Pete was very effective with messaging for the Biden campaign. He seems like a smart, skilled guy, so I hope he has a place in the administration, and it’s one that he is very effective in.

  12. SunshineG says:

Mayo Pete might be a good fit there but I find him disingenuous and problematic.

  13. Mishka says:

Pete was great at slamming Fox fake news hosts to their face all with a straight smart message and a stone bitch face. I wish he was press secretary!!!

  14. Wiglet Watcher says:

That poor EMT worker being outed like that. I hope they get sued.

  15. Normades says:

Pete does not have the credentials for any high ranking cabinet position. He was great on Fox news and should stay in front of the cameras imo. Reminds me of a young George Stephanopolous.
