Essence Atkins from the Cosby Show marrying guy she met on Match.com

Essence Atkins
Essence Atkins, an actress featured on UPN sitcom Half and Half and WB’s Smart Guy, is getting married in a few weeks to a guy she met online. Essence initially didn’t post a photo of herself in order to ensure that she wasn’t recognized, and she contacted her future husband when results showed they were 97% compatible:

When it comes to Internet dating, you never know if the other person is gonna be a plumber, an actress or someone who wants you to put the lotion in the basket — but one lucky man found himself an actress … and he’s about to put a ring on it.

We’ve learned a guy named Jaime Mendez hit the Internet hookup jackpot when he met actress Essence Atkins — who started her career on “The Cosby Show” — on Match.com back in February 2008.

Essence tells us she liked the website because she didn’t have to post a picture of herself — and ended up sending Jamie a message on Valentine’s Day because they were 97% compatible.

The two were engaged one year later and are set to get hitched on Sept 26.

Beat that, eHarmony.

In terms of other future husbands initially not knowing that their dates are actresses, I love the story of how A.J. Langer, (Rayanne Graff on My So Called Life) met her future husband, a real-life English Lord and son of an Earl, in a bar in Vegas. He also happens to be a practicing lawyer, which makes him a doubly-good catch. Langer quipped “He didn’t know I was an actress. I didn’t know he had a castle.” Langer, 35, and her husband of five years, Lord Charles Peregrine Courtenay, have been married five years and have two children together, daughter Joscelyn, two and a half, and son Jack, three weeks.

My husband and I sometimes tell acquaintances we met “through friends,” but we usually admit to good friends that we met through Match.com. We’ve been married almost five years and have a son together. I can’t recommend online dating enough – you have to be careful and trust your instincts, but it’s a very targeted way to meet someone in your area who shares your values and is also looking for a longterm relationship. Congratulations to Essence and Jaime and best wishes for a lifetime of happiness together! Oh – and in terms of eHarmony I’ve heard some people say it’s good at filtering out people who aren’t committed to filling out a million forms, but I thought it was completely worthless. Maybe I’m one of those people who can’t be bothered answering so many questionnaires, and it’s possible it’s improved in the years since I used it.

So who else would benefit from some down low use of online dating services? A few single actresses and actors do come to mind.

Essence Atkins is shown at the premiere of Dance Flick on 5/20/09. I’m not sure if that’s her fiance or not. Credit: PRPhotos. Photo of Essence’s engagement ring credit: WENN.com/Fayes Vision

You re-typed his name as Jamie which isn’t the same as Jaime.
    I love a good match-making story.
A long time ago I tried to fill out the long questionaire for sh!ts and giggles. It told me I had no matches. It told another girl I knew that as well. I don’t know if something was wrong with the website, or us.
Anyway, her shoes are to die for.

What did she play on the Cosby Show? I’ve seen every single episode and really don’t recognize her face…

  3. Celebitchy says:

Thanks Ana I will fix that. eHarmony told me I had no matches either and I lived right near NY City and included all of NY City and surrounding areas. Ridiculous. @Nicole – According to IMDB she played Paula, the ex wife of Denise’s husband Martin. However Wiki has that character played by another actress so maybe she was just in a couple of episodes. Sorry about that.

  4. Hieronymus Grex says:

    I don’t know her, sorry 🙁

At first I thought it was one of the Tia and Tamara twins. I never watched the Cosby Show, but then I remembered her from Smart Guy.

  6. barneslr says:

She was on the Cosby show? Just on one episode, I guess? I sure don’t remember her at all.

Anyway, good for her if she was able to find a good husband through online dating. You hear a lot of horror stories, but I imagine that there are a lot of happy endings, too.

  7. Brown Sugar says:

    She was in Smart Guy

  8. coconut says:

She looks like she’s Ludacris’ sister.

  9. busybee says:

For some reason, I remember her being one of the Cosby girls’ friends on the show…

  10. Persistent Cat says:

I can’t believe someone would name their daughter Essence.

  11. vixenella says:

Victoria Rowell played the ex wife of Martin.

I love the Silence of the Lambs reference.

Congratulations to them. I know a few people who are embarassed to admit they met their significant other online. I feel bad that people would want to make them feel bad for that.

Okay, curiosity got the best of me and I checked her out on IMDB. She was in 2 episodes of Cosby, playing a friend of Vanessa’s. I think it’s a little weak to refer to her as “from the Cosby show,” since she was far from anything close to being a regular.

She does, however, have a very long list of movies that she’s been in. I’d imagine that she’d rather be known for those than two episodes of a TV show that’s been off the air for what…20 years? (not knocking the Cosby show…loved it! But saying she’s “from the Cosby show is a little ridiculous, I think)

ditto. I did a double take on her name. Talk about literal…

  15. Mina says:

May I ask how the fact that she was one half of the titular characters on Half & Half (which is in HEAVY reruns)for 4 years become eclipsed by a cameo or 2 on the Cosby Show? I haven’t seen it mentioned anywhere, let alone any of her movie roles. Google is your friend, folks!

    What a forehead!

  17. bb says:

she was the older sister in the show smart guy..

I love her so much. Kudos to Celebitchy for having diversity and writing stories about hard-working black actresses that are not only about Halle Berry and Tyra Banks. 🙂

  19. Aspie says:

Wow, she’s gorgeous! Congrats to the happy couple! 🙂

Research peoples careers first- Her last t.v series was Half and Half she was one of the main characters
You may want to refer to her more recent work not from something decades ago. Love her, Pretty, classy and smart. she should have more roles
