Garth Brooks will join Lady Gaga & J.Lo to perform at Joe Biden’s inauguration

2019 iHeartRadio Music Awards - Arrivals

I’m more of a fan of Trisha Yearwood than her husband, Garth Brooks. Trisha seems cool as hell and really funny (I love her cooking show). Garth seems… like a bro. But I’ve heard before that Garth and Trisha are both Democrats and donors to Democrats, same as Faith Hill and Tim McGraw. It’s like a little secret in Nashville: some country stars are Democrats! Take that, Bro Country. So, surprise, Garth Brooks is going to perform at Joe Biden’s inauguration, joining Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez for some special inaugural performances. I get it in Gaga and J.Lo’s cases – they were out there, campaigning for Biden-Harris for months. Garth Brooks… wasn’t? Not visibly. But another way to read this is that President Biden is trying to show some of those MAGA rednecks that if they come over to the good side, look, Garth Brooks is there. Garth made a statement about performing:

Country music icon Garth Brooks will perform at President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President-elect Kamala Harris’ inauguration on Wednesday. The Presidential Inaugural Committee revealed the Brooks performance in a press conference Monday.

“This is a great day in our household, this is not a political statement, this is a statement of unity,” Brooks said Monday. “This is history, and it is an honor to get to serve.”

Brooks says he was asked to perform by Dr. Jill Biden last week and made the decision to do so Sunday night. Brooks will be part of the swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol, not the concert or parade programming slated for later in the day Wednesday. Brooks will join Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez, who are also slated to perform at the inauguration ceremonies.

“There is a common theme in every presidential election: New beginnings, new starts, but it is the word unity, the word love, the word that we belong to each other. It is going to take all of us, what I want for all of us to do is listen,” Brooks said. “We are more divided than ever, that bridge that brings us together, it is reaching across, loving one another, because that is what is going to get us through the most divided times that we have.”

Brooks says he has performed for every president since Jimmy Carter, with the exception of Ronald Reagan. He had also performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2008, and was asked to do so at President Trump’s inauguration in 2016, but was unable to appear due to a concert he had committed to in Cincinnati.

“In this case you must rise beyond red and blue, black and white, gay and straight, male and female, look at it from America,” Brooks said, adding that he wants attendees of his concerts leaving the show “loving each other more than the way they came in.” He also recalled one of his favorite quotes, which, fittingly, came from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: “We can’t start living until we rise above the narrows of our own individualistic concerns, and focus on the broader concerns of all humanity.”

[From THR]

Yeah. I mean, nice sentiments or whatever. But I’m not in any way ready to take the first steps to meet the F–k Your Feelings crowd halfway. These are not typical political divisions. One side says the election was fair and Joe Biden won. The other side says “we’re going to erect gallows outside of the Capitol and murder congressional leaders because Donald Trump told us to do that.” F–k unity with these people. Stop telling the normal side that we need unity. Tell the batsh-t crazy side to put down their weapons and turn themselves into the FBI.

LOLOL at “he had a concert scheduled in Cincinnati in 2016.” Like he didnt know what day the inauguration would be. Clever sidestep Garth.

I’m not familiar with any of his more recent work, but man, Garth brooks in the 90s was amazing. his Live album is such a classic, there is such ENERGY in it.

I sort of get it with country stars – they are in a rough spot – they dont want to be too political and alienate their base, but that doesnt mean they are all Trump supporters.

The problem, though, is that silence is complicity, especially over the past 4 years. Think of what a difference it would have made (well maybe over the last 12 years) if country stars like Garth Brooks had come out and said “hey, you know what? Barack Obama is a decent man and your beef is with the Republicans whose policies have ruined the middle class.” Or even – “he’s not a Muslim, but it would not matter if he were.”

i get that the total blackballing of the Dixie Chicks unnerved a lot of country stars (remember Taylor Swift saying a few months ago that she was told to keep quiet about politics in case that happened to her?) but after a certain point, you have to stand for something. And Garth Brooks is certainly still one of the biggest country stars of all time (although the Chicks were huge too.)

He performed at Obama’s inauguration and was asked to Trump’s but had a commitment? I’m so curious if he had an unbreakable commitment or a convenient excuse.

Someone pointed out that at the Biden Harris victory speeches & celebration a lot of the music they played after their speeches were songs and artists that sent cease and desists to the Trump campaign, so it may have been low key trolling by the Biden campaign. Getting Garth Brooks, who declined to perform at Trump’s inauguration seems to be in the same spirit. I really hope this was thought up by someone on the Biden transition team who is my kind of petty.

    • MyOpinion says:

@ sa, yes!! Wouldn’t that be fabulous!! Agent Orange is already storming the bunker with his tiny fists about the brass all coming to perform for him!!!
And Kaiser, a brilliantly written take on the responsibility of unity is all on us, but the,bat shit crazy folks can keep acting like the true terrorists and traitors that they are!! Yes, you should ALL turn yourselves in!! I have noticed that over the last 4 decades, when there has been a Republican president that has caused tremendous damage, the Democrats come in and clean it all up for them to f#ck it up all again!!!
Brava Kaiser!!! We need this plastered across the country!!

  3. Mignionette says:

    As I said earlier…

“The reds are about to have a stroke.”

    • MyOpinion says:

@ Mignionette, and would you mind if I added some extreme pain and misery for them as well since I hate every single one of them?

  4. Esmom says:

“Stop telling the normal side that we need unity. Tell the batsh-t crazy side to put down their weapons and turn themselves into the FBI.”

Preach it, Kaiser. This “both sides” nonsense has got to stop. We have zero hope for unity until anyone supporting the “stop the steal” bullsh^t admits it was a big lie.

I wonder about his hesitation to accept the gig. Personal safety? He definitely is trying to straddle both sides of the fence, implying that he would have performed for Trump if he hadn’t scheduled another concert. Please.

    • Merricat says:

“Stop telling the normal side that we need unity. Tell the batsh-t crazy side to put down their weapons and turn themselves into the FBI.”

Honestly, we should put this on billboards across the country. Succinct and accurate.

  5. Indywom says:

Trump is probably throwing a tantrum that the only celebs supporting him were Ted Nugent, Kid
Rock, Scott Baio and Kristi Swanson.

    • Becks1 says:

Oh you know he is. He has always wanted big celebrities to love him, and they all hate him. That’s why he lashes out at “Hollywood” so much. Well that and its a racist dog whistle.

      • Digital Unicorn says:

Dump has always been obsessed with HW – i recall reading somewhere that he wanted to go off and make it big there as a producer but Daddy told him if he did that he’d be cut off, so into the family business he went.

    • Sandra says:

My facebook memory from four years ago today was me making fun of the lineup at Trump’s inaugural concert. I wrote, “Should I go to the ‘Make America Great Again’ concert and just yell “PLAY SUPERMAN!” at 3 Doors Down?”

  6. NashvilleGirl says:

Garth and Trisha are super close to President and Mrs. Carter through Habitat for Humanity. I’ve had the opportunity to meet both of them and they are GOOD people.

    • Brandy Alexander says:

It’s always stuck with me that Garth cancelled his residency in Vegas because he felt they charged too much for the tickets, and that the average Joe couldn’t afford them. I thought that was so kickass.

  7. EllieK says:

and The New Radicals are reuniting after like 20 years for the inauguration! Looking forward to that.

  8. Erin says:

Garth Brooks has ALWAYS been a supporter of LGBTQ rights, back in the 90s. He doesn’t strike me as a bro at all – have you seen his Chris Gaines alter-ego? He’s a legend of a man.

    • SamC says:

His step-sister, who played in his band until she passed away, was gay and an activist. He’s long acknowledged her influence on his support for LGBTQ rights and marriage equality.

  9. KhaoManee says:

This line up of performers is very white. They couldn’t get more POC besides JLo?

  10. livealot says:

Your last paragraph is everything ! And I appreciate Jlo as a performer but I am getting Jlo fatigue. Gaga is getting there too but I think there needs to be a newer performer to keep the momentum of the political interest amongst the younger generations.

    • blah says:

I dont get it. jlo can move but overall she is just not that good. I wish she would go sit dont for a bit!

  11. Christine says:

There are a LOT of quiet Trump supporters out there and/or those who vote republican because they identify as conservative (which is a discussion in itself lol) I think his message is meant for them vs the fanatics. The cult has created their own reality and I can’t imagine anyone thinking they can still reason with them.

  12. Marigold says:

Garth is really not very problematic. His music was fantastic back in the day. He retired to raise his kids. Then he came back. He seems to be a person who gives his all. I like him.

I do NOT like those trashy Trump bro country stars.

    • MM2 says:

His biggest problem was Chris Gaines. Remember that debacle?! Lol. The country vibe makes me feel uncomfortable on it’s own, but Garth seems harmless, funny & even a tad endearing to me.

  13. ks says:

Google Garth Brooks and Republican and you will see a clip where he says he will be the only Republican at Biden’s event.

  14. Abby says:

I feel like him talking about unity is him talking to the trump supporters honestly. Every Garth Brooks fan I know is a republican. Doubt they’ll listen–look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks–but good for him for saying something.

This story actually really surprised me! I love his music to bits but just always figured he was a republican.

  15. fluffy_bunny says:

I’m think Garth should do Unanswered Prayers to turn the screws to the MAGAs. I doubt they’d be smart enough to get what he would be alluding to but it would make me happy.

  16. Amando says:

I’m surprised and pleased that Garth is a democrat! Gaga is a good choice. But JLo??? Surely they could have found someone better than her… Beyonce…Stevie…anybody.
