Ashley Biden, 39, will not take a job in her father’s administration

Duke of York visits the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital

A few months before the election, I suddenly realized that I did not know the first thing about Ashley Biden, the daughter of Joe Biden and Dr. Jill Biden. I have no doubt that Ashley Biden was around the campaign throughout the entire run, but she wasn’t doing interviews or trying to “build her brand” or baby-whisper complicitly. Ashley is 39 years old and she, along with her parents, will bring a refreshing bit of normalcy back to the American presidency. First and foremost, Ashley is not taking a role within the administration. Thank God. Ashley spoke about her future plans, her parents and a lot more with the Today Show, in what is her first-ever TV interview. She confirms that she will not take a job within the administration and she’ll continue to work with non-profits, charities and such. The issues she wants to work on: “use this platform to advocate for social justice, for mental health – to be involved in community development and revitalization.” She also spoke about Melania being a huge B and more.

What she said about Beau Biden made me cry. Everything about Beau’s passing is just so tragic, and to think about Joe Biden burying a wife and two children and… he’s still able to get up every morning, he’s still able to serve. And the entire time, he’s thinking about Beau.

    Shallow note – she’s gorgeous.

It’s kind of sad that its a headline that the adult daughter of the incoming POTUS will not be taking a job in the administration. That’s so normal that it feels….weird, lol.

Although now that I’m thinking about it – biden and trump are the first presidents in a long time to have adult children. The bush twins were in college during his first term, the Obama girls were obviously children when he started, same with Chelsea Clinton. Did any of George Bush’s children work in his administration?

    • Ann says:

She reminds me of her mother. Her features are kind of a combination, but her energy is Jill’s, somehow. That was a great interview. Jenna is really good at her job and Ashley is very poised and grounded. I agree she’s beautiful. It’s also nice to hear her talk a bit about Hunter, about having the best brothers, saying she knows “the man that he is.” It made me sick how Trump went after Hunter in the debates. Just sick.

    • Lightpurple says:

None of Bush’s children worked in his administration. None of Johnson’s, Nixon’s, Ford’s, Carter’s, or Reagan’s did so either. It was illegal for them to do so, a violation of the anti-nepotism statute. That is what has been lost in all this: Nagini broke the law daily but her lawbreaking was legitimized. First Daughter is not a thing.

    • liz says:

The last family member to work in an administration was Robert Kennedy, brother of John Kennedy and the Attorney General during his administration. The backlash resulted in the anti-nepotism laws that held until Treason Barbie came along.

      • Lightpurple says:

And unlike Ivanka, RFK had an actual job with defined duties and responsibilities, was qualified, AND received overwhelming Senate confirmation.

I didn’t even know Ashley Biden existed until a month ago. She seems lovely. How refreshing to have a nice family in the White House again.

    • GreenBunny says:

I had no idea he had a daughter either until they finally called his win and he gave that speech in Delaware with Kamala. He thanked her and I instantly starting Googling “Joe Biden has a daughter” to find out more. But she seems lovely and I’m so excited to go back to not caring about what the children of POTUS are up to.

    • Joan Rivers says:

The Bidens have several granddaughters, in their teens or early 20s. They talk to him on the phone all the time, close family.

  3. Merricat says:

I am very much in favor of not having any president’s children gainfully employed by the White House.

  4. Lily P says:

It’s going to be so refreshing to have a White House free from nepotism

    • Joan Rivers says:

The Biden clan is closeknit — it couldn’t be more different from the Trumps. Warm and loving family, unlike the Trump nest of rats.

  5. Amelie says:

Ashley Biden has always flown under the radar and like she says she prefers it that way. I don’t think she even spoke at the DNC? (Just looked it up, she introduced her father but that’s it). The last time I checked she didn’t even have a Wikipedia page I thought, but has one now. It was smart having Jenna Bush interview her since they share a lot of common ground together with fathers as prominent politicians.

I have to be honest, Hunter is kind of a mess, at least personally, if not professionally; I don’t believe most of the crap said about him by Trump and the GOP, but he’s not an angel. So, I really hope he keeps a very low profile, because he’s truly the Biden’s weak spot. I do get why Joe Biden is so protective, the man has lost so much in his life. But, none of us can afford the scandal that would result if Hunter does anything even remotely touching the line.

I wish Beau had lived. He’d have been in such a great spot by now to be president himself.

    • Elizabeth says:

He is a mess, but it is mostly because of his addiction struggles, and I have a lot of compassion for anyone going through that. He’s not well.

      • Lauren says:

I do too, just want to be clear. He suffered serious head injuries and nearly died in the crash that killed his mother and sister, all when he was still very young. I can only imagine his issues are a large result of the trauma he experienced.

But he’s the only truly bad thing that can be said about Joe Biden, and he’ll be used a cudgel against the Biden administration. Which isn’t fair, given all the crap the Trump kids have done while complaining they should be off limits, but it is what it is. Thus my hope he lays low, and the Biden administration is as scandal free as Obama’s was.

    • Arpeggi says:

W was doing lines at Camp David and he ended up becoming the 2nd worst POTUS in modern US history (ex-aequo with Nixon maybe?). Hunter is a private citizen who doesn’t seem interested to run for any kind of office; yes he is a mess and underwent lots of traumatic stuff ever since he was a child. He’s not “the only truly bad thing that can be said about Joe Biden” (the Thomas’ SCOTUS hearings would be near the top IMO), he’s his own person, responsible for his actions and being told repeatedly that he’s a stain on his dad’s legacy probably doesn’t help him not struggling. He should be left alone as long as he doesn’t hold an government position

  7. nicegirl says:

    I like Ashley

  8. nicegirl says:

    Not feckless or complicit

  9. Busybody says:

I don’t watch the Today Show, so I had no idea one of the Bush daughters is a reporter. Can your imagine one of the Trump children giving anyone else, much less a Democrat, a platform to speak about themselves?!

    • Murphy says:

Yeah I was gonna say…I couldn’t imagine them giving even their own sibling a platform to speak.

  10. Katie says:

didn’t know she existed, the way she speaks is so polished, she has this movie star air about the way she speaks, neat

  11. Yup, Me says:

Beau Biden has been dead for 5 years. I understand why his FAMILY continues to talk about him and keep his name and memory alive. I do not understand why media keeps it up, though.

    • Joan Rivers says:

He was handsome, a vet, and became Atty. Gen’l of his state, so he worked w/Kamala Harris on the mortgage mess after 2008.

He could have had a political career beyond that if he lived. There was kind of a Kennedy quality to him.

  12. Seraphina says:

WHAAAAAT?????? No Nepotism????? How, how, how – ethical.

  13. Emily says:

I watched a CNN biography on Biden and I cried. He’s experienced so much loss in his life. I hadn’t realized that he had a baby daughter who died in the same accident as his first wife until I watched it. Biden is someone to be admired and such a contrast from the grifters who have occupied the WH, news cycles and our collective nightmares for the last 4 years.

  14. Ann says:

Yes, she is quite beautiful! I think she looks a lot like Meghan Markle, actually. They’re the same age too.

    • Jules says:

A few months ago I saw some pics of Ashley and she looked so familiar. It took me a few seconds to realize she looks like Meghan Markle.

  15. steph says:

I’m so… out of it. Lol. I briefly saw tweets about this interview but didn’t look into it. I just thought, I wonder why she took her step father’s name. For some reason I thought all their kids where from their previous relationships and they didn’t have any together. I thought his only daughter died with his wife (hence the step father thought).

    • Ann says:

Ashley is the daughter of Joe and Jill Biden. Jill did not have children when she married Joe, but Joe had two living children when he married Jill. Then they had a child together, Ashley.

  16. Coco says:

I also didn’t know about Ashley Biden before this election cycle, and I prefer it that way. Unless a spouse or family member of a candidate in some way affects the candidate on an ethical, legal, or security level, I do not care at all what they choose to do with their time. I’m voting for the candidate, not the candidate’s family.

  17. Trish says:

She is lovely. I think everyone in Delaware knows of Ashley (the benefit of such a tiny state). and always respected her right to a private life. If you have a moment, YouTube her eulogy for Beau. It’s beautiful and heart-wrenching.

  18. OzJennifer says:

Oh, she’s lovely. You can feel the warmth and decency radiating from her. What a great family.

  19. Dee Kay says:

I really like this interview but I kind of object to Jenna calling Ashley Biden “the only child of Joe and Jill Biden.” She is their only biological child but I bet if you asked either Joe or Jill Biden, they would both say they are the parents of Hunter and Ashley, and were the parents of Beau.

    • Joan Rivers says:

Yes, I’ve heard Jill say she raised the boys after she married Joe. They were pretty young at that point, too.
